      Ice Picks: NHL Bets
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at Edmonton Oilers (-110, 5.5)

With their longest road trip of the season just getting started, the Montreal Canadiens have to be hoping their longest road losing streak in three years is nearing an end.

The reeling Canadiens will try to snap their six-game road slide on Wednesday when they face the Edmonton Oilers, who are also struggling as they scramble for points in a wild Western Conference race.

Montreal looked like one of the league's best teams when it went 11-2-1 from Dec. 18-Jan. 17, but the Canadiens (29-19-6) have since crumbled, going 2-8-0.

That includes their first six-game road losing streak since a seven-game skid midway through the 2005-06 season. They didn't show any signs of improvement in a 6-2 loss at Calgary on Monday, opening a six-game road trip by getting outshot 41-24 and allowing five unanswered goals in the second and third periods.

"Right now we're not playing with confidence," coach Guy Carbonneau said. "It seems that every time we make a mistake it's in our net. Making plays and making passes is really hard because of the confidence that we don't have."

Carbonneau is hoping a lengthy players-only meeting after Monday's game will help his team turn it around following three straight losses.

The Canadiens have scored two or fewer goals seven times in their last 10 games, and have been outscored 28-12 during their road slide.

      Pick: Under 5.5

San Jose Sharks at Pittsburgh Penguins (+132, 5.5)

After ending their longest losing streak of the season against the stiffest of competition, the San Jose Sharks now look to continue their dominance of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night.

Few teams have been able to contain San Jose (37-7-7) during its ascent to the top of the Western Conference, but the Sharks entered their latest contest mired in a three-game losing streak (0-1-2) that was their longest skid since a five-game slide from Feb. 12-20, 2008.

San Jose started slowly against league-leading Boston on Tuesday, trailing 2-1 after one period. But captain Patrick Marleau led the Sharks' comeback, contributing a goal and two assists during a four-goal third period in a 5-2 victory.

"We play fast, we play big," said All-Star Joe Thornton, who scored for the 12th time and increased his team-leading point total to 58. "They came out really strong and we didn't have too many answers. I think the second half of the game, the ice kind of tilted."

San Jose has split the first two contests on a season-high five-game road trip, and now seeks its fifth win in its last six visits to Pittsburgh (26-24-5).

Beating Eastern opponents has become a habit for the Sharks, who are 10-1-1 versus teams from the opposite conference this season. That mastery has extended to their meetings with the Penguins as San Jose is 11-1-0 with a tie in the last 13 matchups, outscoring Pittsburgh 42-24.

The Sharks have won the last five overall meetings, most recently 2-1 at home on Oct. 28, when they held the Penguins to a season-low 11 shots.

      Pick: San Jose -142

Los Angeles Lakers at Utah Jazz [9 PM ET]

Lakers (-3, O/U 217): LA looks to enter the All-Star break on an eight-game winning streak but will have a sizeable lead atop the Western Conference standings regardless. The Lakers are coming off a 105-98 win over Oklahoma City on Tuesday in which star Kobe Bryant become the youngest player to ever reach 23,000 points by scoring 34. “It’s always fun whenever you talk about the history of the game,” Bryant said. “It’s always a tremendous honor.” LA is 9-3 ATS this season when playing without rest.

Lakers are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
The OVER is 8-1 in LA's last 9 road games.

Key Injuries - C Andrew Bynum (knee) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 110

Jazz: Point guard Deron Williams is certainly doing everything he can to help Utah finish the first half of the season on a high note following a rough 116-96 loss at Utah on Sunday. Williams is averaging 33.5 points and 7.8 assists in his last four games while shooting 57.5 percent from the field. His teammates also understand the importance. “We need to finish out the first half of the season strong,” Jazz forward Paul Millsap said. “Hopefully we can get this win on Wednesday versus the Lakers, get a little bit of momentum going into the All-Star break, come back at full strength, and try to make a run at this thing.”

Jazz are 3-9-1 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
The OVER is 8-3 in Utah's last 11 home games.

Key Injuries - F Andrei Kirilenko (ankle) is OUT.

Oklahoma Sooners at Baylor Bears (+3.5, 156)

With a perfect record against Baylor in Big 12 conference play, Oklahoma doesn't appear to have much of a challenge in Wednesday night's matchup in Waco. But Sooners coach Jeff Capel is not one to let his team rest on past successes.

While No. 2 Oklahoma goes for its 12th win in a row overall and 30th straight victory over Baylor, the Bears are trying to snap a season-high five-game skid and a drought at home against the Sooners that dates to Dec. 14, 1954.

Oklahoma (23-1, 9-0) arrives at the Ferrell Center following Saturday's 77-72 win over Colorado. The Sooners defeated the then-No. 25 Bears 77-71 in their last visit to Waco on Jan. 26, 2008.

Oklahoma is 25-0 against Baylor since the Big 12 started before the 1996-97 season.

"Our players know they haven't lost to them, but it doesn't matter," Capel said following the Sooners' 95-76 win over the Bears on Jan. 24.

Blake Griffin had 20 points and 17 boards in that matchup. On Wednesday, the sophomore is looking for his seventh straight double-double - and Division I-leading 21st of the season - after scoring 26 points and grabbing 12 boards in Saturday's victory.

Griffin is scoring 21.5 points per game and averaging 14.0 boards since the Sooners' 96-88 loss to Arkansas on Dec. 30. The 6-foot-10 Griffin will likely be matched up with Baylor 6-9 senior Kevin Rogers, who had 11 points and eight rebounds in the Jan. 24 meeting.

                      Pick: Oklahoma -3.5

Syracuse Orange at Connecticut Huskies (-11.5, 149)

Thanks to Connecticut, a month-long stretch of new No. 1 teams has stopped. There's been no end, however, to Syracuse's drop in the poll.

The top-ranked Huskies look to win their 12th straight game and hand the No. 23 Orange their fifth straight road defeat as the Big East rivals meet Wednesday night.

Connecticut (22-1, 10-1) has held on to the top spot in the AP poll for the second straight week after a span that had a different No. 1 team for four straight weeks. The Huskies were again a runaway No. 1, receiving 67 of 72 first-place votes, after beating then-No. 5 Louisville 68-51 on Feb. 2 and Michigan 69-61 on Saturday.

In its first week as the No. 1 team since 2005-06, Connecticut extended its winning streak to 11 straight. The Huskies haven't lost since a 74-63 defeat against then-No. 11 Georgetown in the Big East opener on Dec. 29.

Struggling Syracuse (18-6, 6-5) appears to be in no position to slow down UConn. The Orange have dropped five of seven, starting that stretch ranked eighth.

Syracuse fell three spots in this week's poll, and could easily fall out with a loss to the Huskies. The Orange, who lost 102-85 to then-No. 17 Villanova on Saturday, also host Georgetown on Saturday.

Most of Syracuse's problems have been on the road, where it has lost four straight. Facing the nation's top-ranked team at Gampel Pavilion won't help matters since the Orange are 0-3 all-time there.

The Huskies improved to 11-1 at home with their victory over the Wolverines, and have outscored their opponents at home by an average margin of 22.1 points.

                      Pick: UConn -11.5
