    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, February 10

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: LeBron and the Cavaliers take on Indiana, Kobe and the Lakers meet the Thunder, and the Sharks try to feed on the Bruins.

    Tipping Off in the NBA

Coming off their marquee matchup on Sunday, the Lakers and Cavaliers will go their separate ways this week, starting with games on Tuesday night. LeBron James and company will be looking to pick up a win against a lowly division rival, as they'll be in Indiana to meet the Pacers. Meanwhile, Kobe Bryant's Lakers will be looking for a cakewalk when they get a visit from the cellar-dwelling Thunder.

A busy night around the NBA features seven other games on the schedule, including Detroit on the road in Chicago, and Dwyane Wade and Miami at home against Denver. As well, it'll be Washington at Atlanta, San Antonio at New Jersey, Toronto at Minnesota, Sacramento at Dallas, and New York at Golden State.

    The March to Madness

It's Marquette vs. Villanova in Big East action on Tuesday night, with the conference rivals coming off very different results. The Golden Eagles were upset 57-56 by South Florida in their last contest despite a 22-point performance from Jerel McNeal. The Wildcats, on the other hand, knocked off Syracuse 102-85 in their last game, with Dante Cunningham picking up 31 points in the victory.

Clemson will take on Boston College in Chestnut Hull in key ACC action on Tuesday night, while Michigan will get a visit from rival Michigan State. As well, Oklahoma State will travel to Texas, and Minnesota will play host to the Hoosiers.

    A Trip Around the Rink

Two of the NHL's best clubs meet in Boston on Tuesday night when the Bruins play host to the Sharks and former Beantown superstar Joe Thornton. The Bruins were beaten 4-3 in overtime by the Flyers on Saturday afternoon, but they're still 6-1-3 in their past 10 outings. The Sharks were also tagged with an overtime loss in their last outing, as the Blue Jackets got by them by a 3-2 score.

There are a half-dozen other games on the NHL's schedule for Tuesday, including the Red Wings on the road in Nashville. As well, it's Los Angeles at the Islanders, Colorado at Columbus, Atlanta at Tampa Bay, Toronto at Florida, and Vancouver at St. Louis; the Canucks blasted the Blackhawks 7-3 Saturday night.

    Rounding Out the Slate

The Cubs always have their early-season supporters, and this year's no different with them pegged as the 3/1 Vegas favorites to win the 2009 National League pennant. The defending-champion Phillies are just behind Chicago at 4/1 odds to get back to the World Series, while the Mets and Dodgers are pegged at 5/1 odds. The Diamondbacks round out the first five on the chart, as they sit at 13/2.

The Cardinals have 8/1 odds on that Vegas list right now, while the Brewers are at 15/1, and the Rockies and Braves are both pegged at 18/1. The Marlins and Astros hold down 20/1 odds to get to the World Series, with the Giants at 25/1, the Reds at 40/1, and the Padres at 60/1. The Nationals, as usual, are big 'dogs at 60/1 odds, but that still puts them ahead of one other team - the 75/1 Pirates.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

        13) How about the poor bastard who works (worked?) at Players' Association who neglected to have the drug test results destroyed as he/she was supposed to do? None of this would have happened.......

        12) Ben Roethlisberger played in Super Bowl with two broken ribs. Rocco Baldelli missed 500 days with a pulled hamstring, somehow healed when the Rays became contenders, then signed with the Red Sox as a free agent (he is from Rhode Island). What a country.

        11) There is a reality TV show about the racetrack.....titled "Jockeys" it isn't bad-- shows four or five jockeys in California, among them the Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith. Show airs Fridays at 9 on the Animal Planet channel, whatever that is. It is Channel 51 in Albany.

        10) Rebounding is as much about smarts, desire and toughness as it is about size; kid named Josh Henley from Gardner-Webb averages 9.3 boards a game, making him the leading freshman rebounder in nation, and he is only 6-foot-3.

        9) Baylor-Notre Dame would be an excellent NIT final.

        8) When I was in college at UAlbany, we used to constantly beat the Binghamton Colonials, usually by big scores-- we were both teams in Division III, and they were lousy, sometimes only opening one side of their gym because only 30-40 people came to the games. We lost to them one time, and led the rematch 41-9 at the half. Times have certainly changed, now that both schools are in Division I.

        7) Binghamton Bearcats lead America East in attendance, they have transfers from all corners of the country., and they're, well, good, so good they have a shot to win the America East tourney, as they're in a three-way race with Boston U and Vermont for top seed in league.

        6) Minnesota Timberwolves had been playing better, but now their best player Al Jefferson is out for the year with a torn ACL, another difficult blow for a crummy franchise. Please explain to me why this sorry franchise traded Kevin Garnett..........why?

        5) Missouri came back from down 14 at half to beat Kansas, handing Jayhawks their first Big 12 loss. Kansas turned ball over 28 times in the game, but you still got feeling the better team lost this game.

        4) Buddy of mine is an assistant coach at Iona College, so I watched the Gaels' game at Manhattan Monday-- how do I say this nicely?? I'll just report facts-- Manhattan led 19-11 at the half, and things did not get a lot better in the second half. If you're a high school hooper with Division I skills, and you'd like to live near New York City, go e-mail the coaches at Iona. They have 30 or 32 minutes a game for anyone who can score, starting next November.

        3) I saw the flagrant foul they called on the Indiana kid at Michigan State over the weekend, and I don't get it, it just seemed innocent, as he swung the ball, he nicked the defender. Then he got suspended by his own coach? We're living in a softer world today, people........

        2) Looking quickly at last year's baseball standings, Angels won 100 games, more than anyone else, but once again failed to win a playoff series. Now they've lost K-Rod and Teixeira, and neither player has been adequately replaced, but can anyone in AL West make up 21+ games in the standings? Not very likely.

        1) To me, the biggest story of the week is how corrupt the Players' Association apparently is; in no way can they say they have the best interests of the players' health at heart- they're obviously primarily out for the almighty buck, and they ain't alone thinking that way.

              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver Nuggets at Miami Heat [7:30 PM ET]

Nuggets: Denver is coming off its worst loss in nearly 12 years, suffering a 114-70 loss at New Jersey on Saturday. The Nuggets had won four straight games before that, and head coach George Karl had an easy explanation. “Sometimes you’re one step slow,” Karl said following the loss to the Nets. “We were two steps slow. Offensively we were slow. Defensively we were slow. Rebounds, hustle points, all that we were slow on. This is the first time all year we haven’t had the energy to fight back.”

Nuggets are 1-3 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
The OVER is 11-4 in Denver's last 15 games vs. Eastern Conference.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Heat (NA): Miami has won its last four home games by an average of 16.5 points and hopes to continue to play strong defensively after limiting opponents to 41.6 percent shooting during that stretch. However, the Heat barely beat Charlotte 96-92 on Sunday. “We may have had a fatigued group out there,” Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra said. “I wanted to make sure we were fresh in the second half and I thought our starters played with a tremendous amount of energy when they had their legs.”

Heat are 0-7 SU in the last 7 meetings.
The OVER is 7-1 in Miami's last 8 games vs. Western Conference.

Key Injuries - F Dorell Wright (Achilles') is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

#9 Michigan State at Michigan [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Michigan State (-3.5, O/U 135): The Spartans have not lost a road game this season (7-0) but might have to finish out their schedule without forward Raymar Morgan, who is averaging 12.3 points and six rebounds per game. Morgan has been suffering from mononucleosis since scoring 17 points in a 78-73 victory at Penn State, and head coach Tom Izzo said a more realistic return date is a week from now when Michigan State hosts Purdue.

Michigan State is 4-1 SU & ATS in its last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 3-1 in the last 4 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Raymar Morgan (mononucleosis) is doubtful.

PROJECTED SCORE: 67 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Michigan: The Wolverines had to gain some more confidence after playing very tough in a 69-61 loss at #1 UConn last Saturday. They have already beaten UCLA and Duke and could have improved their resume for the NCAA tournament even more with another impressive victory against a non-conference opponent. “We feel like we let one get away,” Michigan guard Manny Harris said. “We could have beat the number-one team in the nation. We try not to look at the NCAA like that, but that would definitely have built our resume.” The Wolverines led 34-33 at halftime.

Michigan is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 home games.
The UNDER is 16-5-1 in Michigan's last 22 games vs. Big Ten.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 63

Florida at Kentucky [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Florida: The Gators did not play over the weekend and remain tied for first place atop the SEC East. They have won just twice at Rupp Arena over the last 10 years and realize they will facing a difficult challenge in their second nationally televised matchup in as many weeks at Kentucky. Last week's Super Tuesday game saw Florida edge South Carolina 97-93 at home. “It’s been a long month for these guys so hopefully a couple of days off will rejuvenate them,” said Gators head coach Billy Donovan.

Florida is 7-1 SU in the last 8 meetings.
The OVER is 3-0 in Florida's last 3 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Adam Allen (knee) is OUT.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 70

Kentucky (-4, O/U 145): The Wildcats have dropped three games in a row and hope to bounce back from a 66-57 home loss to Mississippi State last Tuesday. In fact, they have dropped two straight at home and need to use their size to their advantage against the Gators. SEC leading scorer Jodie Meeks had scored at least 20 points in nine straight games until a week ago. “When you lose, things are definitely exposed and come to light in a hurry,” said Kentucky head coach Billy Gillispie.

Kentucky is 0-3 SU & ATS in its last 3 games overall.
The OVER is 3-1 in the last 4 meetings.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 77 (Side Play of the Day)

Los Angeles Kings at New York Islanders (+120, 5.5)

A trip to Nassau Coliseum wouldn't seem to present a tough challenge for Los Angeles, as the Islanders (16-31-5) have a league-low 37 points.

New York has cooled off after a four-game winning streak, losing back-to-back games at Florida and Tampa Bay last week. Coach Scott Gordon's team fell 1-0 to the Lightning on Saturday night, allowing the winning goal with 6:26 to play.

"It's never fun to lose like that in the third," said New York's Yann Danis, who made 27 saves. "We played a good game. We battled hard. There's definitely some positives out of it."

Danis has been a bright spot lately, going 4-4-1 with a 1.92 GAA since the beginning of January. The Islanders, though, are 27th in the league with 2.42 goals scored per game and have managed two total goals in two losses without defenseman Mark Streit.

Streit, the Islanders' leading scorer with 38 points, has been out with an upper-body injury. Defensemen Freddy Meyer, Thomas Pock and Andy Sutton are also injured.

The Kings have won the last two matchups with the Islanders, the most recent a 3-1 victory Jan. 31, 2008.

                            Pick: Los Angeles -130

Detroit Red Wings at Nashville Predators (+170, 5.5)

Mired in their longest losing streak of the season at the end of January, the Detroit Red Wings have responded with some of their best hockey of the season.

The Red Wings go for their fifth straight win Tuesday night when they face the Nashville Predators, who have been making a push for a playoff spot this month.

Detroit (35-11-7) knocked off Pittsburgh 3-0 on Sunday in a rematch of last season's Stanley Cup finals. Pavel Datsyuk scored twice to extend his point streak to eight games, and he has three goals and four assists during the Wings' winning streak.

The Red Wings went 0-4-1 from Jan. 17-31, but they've gotten back on track and pushed their lead in the Central Division to 11 points.

More scoring has keyed Detroit's February rebound. The Wings managed 14 goals during the five consecutive losses, but have scored 20 in the last four games.

The offensive resurgence has been led by players like Datsyuk and Marian Hossa, who scored for the fourth consecutive game Sunday - his 30th goal of the season that gave Detroit a 2-0 third-period lead. Hossa has six goals during the winning streak.

                            Pick: Over 5.5

Washington Wizards at Atlanta Hawks (N/A)

The Wizards should have a little wind in their sails Tuesday.

Washington, which has the league’s worst record, edged the Indiana Pacers 119-117 Sunday. It is just the Wizards' first triumph this month and just its 11th overall.

Wizards stars Caron Butler, who missed the last two tilts with the flu, and Antwan Jamison combined for 69 points on 53 percent shooting from the field against the Pacers.

“I wasn't going to come out,” Butler told reporters after sinking the game-winning shot. ”I wasn't going to let Coach know I was tired. Every time he made eye contact with me, I tried to seem as bright as I could. Just trying to stay out there and will my way through it.”

The Hawks, meanwhile, have lost five of their last eight and were recently embarrassed by the lowly Los Angeles Clippers.

Atlanta could be without two of its clutch players Tuesday. Guard Mike Bibby is questionable with a sprained foot and shooting guard Joe Johnson is doubtful with an undisclosed viral infection.

                              Pick: Wizards

Sacramento Kings at Dallas Mavericks (-12, 213.5)

Despite playing seven of its last 10 on the road, Dallas is 7-3 in that stretch and is clinging to the seventh seed in the West.

Dirk Nowitzki has been extremely consistent lately. Nowitzki has put up more than 20 points in six of his last 10, including Saturday’s 44-point outing against the Chicago Bulls.

“Unbelievable performance,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle told reporters. "He (Nowitzki) just stayed patient and into the game. Down the stretch his shot-making was phenomenal.”

Nowitzki scored 14 of his 44 points in OT and led the Mavs to a one-point victory over the Bulls.

“That's why he’s a superstar," Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro told reporters. “We tried trapping him, we switched on him, but we couldn’t get to him.”

Dallas is 11-2-1 against the spread (ATS) in its last 14 home games against the Kings.

                              Pick: Mavericks
