  • A-Rod admits, regrets use of PEDs

    ESPN.com news services

His voice shaking at times, Alex Rodriguez met head-on allegations that he tested positive for steroids six years ago, telling ESPN on Monday that he did take performance-enhancing drugs while playing for the Texas Rangers during a three-year period beginning in 2001.

"When I arrived in Texas in 2001, I felt an enormous amount of pressure, I felt like I had all the weight of the world on top of me and I needed to perform, and perform at a high level every day," Rodriguez told ESPN's Peter Gammons in an exclusive interview in Miami Beach, Fla. An extended interview will air on SportsCenter at 6 p.m. ET.

"Back then, [baseball] was a different culture," Rodriguez said. "It was very loose. I was young, I was stupid, I was naive. And I wanted to prove to everyone that I was worth being one of the greatest players of all time.

"I did take a banned substance. And for that, I am very sorry and deeply regretful."

Major League Baseball had no comment Monday. Rangers owner Tom Hicks said Rodriguez's admission caught him by surprise.

"I feel personally betrayed. I feel deceived by Alex," Hicks said in a conference call, according to The Associated Press. "He assured me that he had far too much respect for his own body to ever do that to himself. ... I certainly don't believe that if he's now admitting that he started using when he came to the Texas Rangers, why should I believe that it didn't start before he came to the Texas Rangers?"

Rodriguez's admission comes 48 hours after Sports Illustrated reported that Rodriguez was on a list of 104 players who tested positive for banned substances in 2003, the year when Major League Baseball conducted survey tests to see if mandatory, random drug-testing was needed in the sport.

Yea right, he regrets getting caught. He claims he only used between 01-03. Bet ya my last dollar he used before 01 and after 03. Hell he still may be using since they can't test for HGH. I bet if the truth was known 75-80% of the players playing between 95 and 2005 were using something.

What I don't understand is, everybody knew this, the owners knew it, the commissioner knew, we all knew it, so why is such a big deal 10 years later? They all got rich, we got see some baseball played at a super human level, now we know how bad steriods are for your body and they're banned. That was the steroid era, it was fun, I loved it, and I still love baseball just the same. I don't care if this douchebag commissioner that makes $20 million a year to basically do worse than what a monkey would do, acts like he's shocked at what happened to his beloved game. Fuck him. I'm shocked he's getting paid more than $20 million pesos to do a shit job.

Not calling you out Mavs BUT IMO the fact that we all "watched the last 5-10 years" is because of all the homers and shit that was going on.No doubt that Mark and Sammy was doing steroids but I raced home every night to watch ESPN for there Break-in games to watch them both chase the record. We act like there all wrong for what they did but we loved every second of it.I might be the only one who feels like this but us the fans and the media created this monster and now were acting like the players were the ones that were wrong. They did what they had to do to live up to our expectations IMO

I love baseball. I loved it when Sammy & Mac were hitting 60-70 and i loved watching Barry drop 73. I loved it long before that and i'll love it this year and next too. Does it suck that some or maybe most were on some juice? Sure, it would be nice to know that Baseball has a clean history throughout but it is what it is. I enjoyed the Juiced ball era, the juiced player era and i'll enjoy the era we are in now too (Whatever it may be).

Does it suck for the Record books? Yes, most think it does and i would agree to a point. In reality, it doesn't affect my daily life so Bonds holding the Record for HR's is something i will never lose sleep over. Part of me thinks it is fun watching guys in "My Era" do what they have done. No doubt it helps but i could have taken steroids my whole life and trained, and i still could never do what they did. I'm sure a TON of others were on steroids too and they couldn't do what some of these guys did. To me, what seperated those guys from others was still talent in the end.

I don't know, i understand why people are pissed but really, all i want is for the Season to start and i just don't care about Steroids anymore!

I guess i'm more "New School" rather than "Old School".

I never saw guys like Aaron play so i kinda like seeing guys i know and did see in the record books. It will be a great story to tell later on and i'll be able to say i saw it all!

Since when were our expectations 50-60 HRs a year?? Not until they made it our expectations. Fuck them. Entertaining?? yeah before 5 years ago when we knew they all cheated, now that all this has happened its a waste of time. Ohhhhhhh Bonds passed Aaron, who gives a fuck?? A-Rod's on pace to pass Bonds..... again who gives a fuck??? These guys are all frauds. You give a shit that Bonds hit 760? Come on Vols. Sure it was cool when Sammy and Mark were going HR for HR, it was cool at the time. But now its all fake, there all frauds, and the last ten years of watching baseball, IMO, were a waste of time.

Wayne agrees with ole vols It's really a no win argument. The only way to make it even is for the Hall of Fame to break it down in decades. As a Braves fan did I like seeing Bonds break the record.Hell no.As a sports fan did I like seeing his last 200 homeruns.Hell yes. It's a fine line no doubt
