    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, February 9

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rangers try to rebound in New Jersey, the Sixers get a visit from the Suns, and Pittsburgh gets ready for West Virginia.

    Tipping Off in the NBA

The NBA begins its march to the weekend's All-Star festivities with four games on the schedule for Monday night. The top matchup on the docket will take place in Philadelphia, where the Suns will take on the Sixers. Philadelphia got back over the .500 mark (25-24 straight-up) with a 94-84 win against the Heat on Saturday. Andre Miller picked up 15 points and five assists in that win for Philly.

The Clippers will be in Charlotte on Monday night; the Bobcats sent forward Adam Morrison and guard Shannon Brown to the Lakers on Saturday in exchange for forward Vladimir Radmanovic. As well, the Rockets will take to the floor in Milwaukee, while the Grizzlies will get a visit from the Hornets in Memphis.

    The March to Madness

The top college hoops team in action on Monday is Pittsburgh, which will take on West Virginia at the Petersen Events Center. The Panthers had no trouble dispatching DePaul in their last contest, as they rolled to a 92-69 victory behind 32 points from DeJuan Blair. The Mountaineers are also coming off a win; they got 24 points from Alex Ruoff in an 86-59 victory over Providence on Saturday.

The only other ranked team in action on Monday is Kansas, which sat at No. 21 heading into the week. The Jayhawks knocked off Oklahoma State 78-67 in their last game, and they'll hit the road to play Missouri on Monday. The Tigers got a 31-point effort from DeMarre Carroll in an 82-68 win over Iowa State last game.

    A Trip Around the Rink

The Rangers will be trying to bounce back from an embarrassing defeat in their last contest when they take to the ice in New Jersey on Monday night. New York was blasted 10-2 by Dallas on Friday, with backup goaltender Stephen Valiquette (subbing for an ill Henrik Lundqvist) giving up those 10 markers on 39 shots. The Devils lost last time out too - the Kings beat them by a score of 3-1 on Saturday.

The only other game on the NHL schedule for Monday sees the Canadiens head west for a meeting with the Flames in Calgary. Slumping Montreal lost 5-2 to the division-rival Maple Leafs on Saturday night, and they're just 3-7-0 in their past 10 outings. Calgary is coming off a 2-1 loss to the Ducks on Saturday afternoon.

    Rounding Out the Slate

The emerging Alex Rodriguez steroid scandal hasn't had any effect on the Yankees' Vegas odds to win the American League pennant this season - they're still pegged as the 7/5 favorite to be the Junior Circuit's representative in the 2009 World Series. The Red Sox are next at 15/4, with the Rays third at 11/2. The first non-AL-East team on the list are the Angels, who sit back at 13/2 odds.

The second tier of AL contenders is topped by the Twins and Indians, who are both at 10/1 odds to win the league's pennant, with the White Sox at 12/1, the Tigers at 13/1, and the A's at 16/1. The Jays are back at 30/1 odds, the Rangers sit at 35/1, and the Orioles, Mariners, and Royals are the longshots at 50/1 odds.

      Monday's eight-pack

Eight best starting pitchers for Fantasy League purposes.....

-- Roy Halladay-- Made 16 starts vs Rays-Boston-Bronx, still led AL in innings pitched by more than 20. Best pitcher in the AL.

-- Cole Hamels-- Is 29-15 the last two years, but pitched deep into October LY, and just signed huge contract. Buyer beware.

-- Dan Haren-- Finished 3rd in the NL in both WHIP, strikeouts.

-- Tim Lincecum-- Why did Bochy let him throw 127+ pitches in three different starts down the stretch, pitching for a lousy team?

-- Jake Peavy-- Will probably get traded during season, but maybe not now, since team just got sold. His career ERA at Petco is 2.66; on road, it is 3.69, so if he's traded, it could be a problem.

-- CC Sabathia-- 494 IP the last two years; was 6-8, 3.78 in the AL last year for the Indians. Figures to get tremendous run support.

-- Johan Santana-- 50-26 the last three years, with WHIPs of 1.00/ 1.07/1.15. Worth every penny the Metropolitans are paying him.

-- Brandon Webb-- Will miss Orlando Hudson, but is 56-25 the last three years, throwing 235-236-226 innings.

Monday's List of 13: Clearing out a very cluttered mind........

        13) Best sporting event of the day was Indiana State's wacky OT win at Illinois State, when a kid named Tunnell did a great impersonation of Larry Bird, knocking down 8-9 treys, scoring 28 points and adding a dozen rebounds. Sycamores only have three wins in the Valley, but they all came in OT, and two of them were upsets vs Illinois State.

        12) Illinois State, by the way, is located in a town called Normal, IL; who wouldn't want to grow up in Normal?

        11) Every Seton Hall-Rutgers game seems the same; two teams play hard for 35-37 minutes, then Seton Hall wins at the end. After an 0-6 start in Big East play, Bobby Gonzalez has saved his job by winning his last four games. Lot of tension between these teams, but all their games are fun to watch.

        10) Trent Johnson has done a superior job at LSU, winning seven in a row; Sunday, he avenged his only SEC loss when Tigers won 76-62 at home against Alabama. There are no top 25 teams in the SEC; you watch the games, and they are mostly wildly erratic teams, but LSU might just be the best of the bunch.

        9) Purdue is lame without Robbie Hummel and St Mary's is worse in absence of Patty Mills. What does the NCAA committee do about these teams? Mills is due back for WCC tourney, but Hummel has a fracture in his back, so he's basically day-to-day. This is going to be a real bad year to be on the NCAA committee- so many teams are just hard to separate. How many teams will the Big East get? ACC? SEC? The mid-major conferences?

        8) NC State was up 49-35 at the half in Blacksburg Sunday, but lost 91-87 in OT to the Hokies, ending Tech's six-game skid vs State.

        7) MLB Network is showing an old Reds-Diamondbacks game as I type this; Mark Grace just tied the game with a double in the 11th inning. Grace is now the color commentator on Arizona's telecasts. Randy Johnson struck out 20 guys in this game.

        6) Game ended when pinch-hitter Matt Williams walked with bases loaded in the 11th; Williams is now a part-owner of the Snakes.

        5) Saint Louis won triple OT thriller in Richmond Sunday, avenging an earlier loss to the Spiders.

        4) Creighton used a zone to hold Northern Iowa to 29% from floor in a 77-71 win in Cedar Rapids; Panthers were 5-26 from arc, but 30-32 at charity stripe. Bluejays won despite being outrebounded 45-26.

        3) Wake Forest shot 57% from floor and hammered Boston College for second time this season...........Washington swept Stanford with a 75-68 win at Maples........Georgia Tech had another excruciating loss when it fell at home to Maryland. If Tech and Texas had point guards this whole season might have a different tint to it.

        2) Nick Watney drained a 38-foot bomb on 16th green to tie for the lead, then edged out John Rollins on 18th hole to win at Torrey Pines his second career win. Rollins had led by as many as four strokes in the final round, but couldn't close things out.

        1) We're 34 days from Selection Sunday; as it stands right now, there are going to be some very upset teams that night, because there is no way to adequately sort out the teams. Hopefully, the next few weeks will take their course and provide some clarity.

West Virginia at #5 Pittsburgh [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

West Virginia: The Mountaineers are 2-6 against ranked opponents this season, but they are coming off a dominating 86-59 win over Providence on Saturday. They will be looking to snap a three-game series skid at Pitt and hand the Panthers their first home loss of the season. “As of right now we are ninth in our league and that’s not good enough,” West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins. “We have got to win some games here and make a move here in the second half of the conference schedule.”

West Virginia is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 Monday games.
The OVER is 3-1 in the last 4 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Joe Mazzulla (shoulder) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 66 (Side Play of the Day)

Pitt (-7.5, O/U 136): To say Pitt's DeJuan Blair has been a monster lately might be an understatement. Blair has averaged 24.3 points and 14.7 rebounds in helping the Panthers win their last three games, including a 92-69 rout of DePaul on Saturday. “He’s not as athletic as Charles Barkley, but he’s certainly bigger,” Blue Demons head coach Jerry Wainwright said of Blair. “Their hips are right up to here on you and they just don’t give up space.” Blair had 16 points and 11 rebounds in a 79-67 win at West Virginia on January 25th. “This is the best I’ve been playing,” Blair said. “I’m going to try to keep it going.”

Favorite is 10-4-1 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
The OVER is 15-5 in Pitt's last 20 games vs. Big East.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 70

#24 Kansas at Missouri [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Kansas: The Jayhawks have gotten off to an 8-0 start in Big 12 play but realize a tough road lies ahead starting with this game at Missouri. Kansas plays three of its next five games on the road, including visits to Kansas State and Oklahoma following this meeting with the Tigers. “It gets harder from here,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said. “We’re as good as we can be as far the league races goes. Certainly, I’m really looking forward to going to Columbia. I think it will probably be as difficult a setting as we’ve played in all year, but we need that.”

Kansas is 8-1 ATS in its last 9 games vs. Big 12.
The OVER is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 76 (OVER - Side Play of the Day)

Missouri (-4, O/U 152): The Tigers bring a 15-game home winning streak into this matchup with Kansas, and they have also won seven of eight overall. Perhaps a bigger accomplishment was achieved on Saturday in an 82-68 victory at Iowa State, as Mizzou got to 20 wins for the first time in six years and avoided looking ahead to this nationally televised game. “We had great focus going into the game,” Tigers head coach Mike Anderson said. “Our leadership and seniors stepped up, and we were focused on the game. It wasn’t easy, with this game in between Texas and Kansas. Twenty wins is something we haven’t done since I have been here.”

Missouri is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
The OVER is 8-3 in Missouri's last 11 home games.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 80

West Virginia Mountaineers at Pittsburgh Panthers (-8, 135.5)

DeJuan Blair has been instrumental in helping the Panthers score at least 92 points in winning each of their last three games, as he's averaging 24.3 points on 61.5 percent shooting and 14.7 rebounds in those contests.

"This is the best I've been playing," he said. "I'm going to try to keep it going."

While Blair has been outstanding lately, he has struggled in Pitt's two losses. He had seven points, eight rebounds and four fouls in a 67-57 loss at then-No. 21 Villanova on Jan. 28 and finished with nine points and 10 boards before fouling out in a 69-63 loss at No. 20 Louisville on Jan. 17.

The 6-foot-7, 265-pound center is averaging 18.6 points and 13.9 boards in Pitt's eight Big East victories, and finished with 16 points and 11 boards in a 79-67 win at West Virginia (16-7, 5-5) on Jan. 25.

Panthers forward Sam Young led Pitt in the victory over the Mountaineers, scoring 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting.

Young, who averages a team-high 17.8 points, had 10 points and a season-high 10 rebounds against the Blue Demons as Blair carried the offense.

Levance Fields also had a stellar performance in Saturday's victory, finishing with 13 points and a career-high 16 assists. Fields, who is averaging 14.0 points and 12.0 assists in his last three games, had 13 points and five assists against West Virginia two weeks ago.

                        Pick: Over

Kansas Jayhawks at Missouri Tigers (-4, 153)

Kansas has won five straight over Missouri and two in a row at Columbia.

The Tigers (20-4, 7-2), though, come in having won three straight and seven of eight. They've beaten both of their Top 25 opponents this season, defeating then-No. 19 Southern California on Nov. 23 and then-No. 16 Texas in Austin on Feb. 4.

Missouri beat Iowa State 82-68 on Saturday, as DeMarre Carroll scored a career-high 31 points and Kim English added 16 to help the Tigers reach the 20-win mark for the first time in six years.

"We had great focus going into the game," said coach Mike Anderson, whose team tops the Big 12 with 84.2 points per game. "Our leadership and seniors stepped up, and we were focused on the game. It wasn't easy, with this game in between Texas and Kansas. Twenty wins is something we haven't done since I have been here."

Missouri has won 15 consecutive home games, and it's averaging 90.5 points at Mizzou Arena this season - third-highest in the nation at home. The Tigers, though, have been held to less than 75 points in three of their last four games against Kansas at Columbia.

Missouri's last win in the series was an 89-86 overtime home victory Jan. 16, 2006. The teams meet again March 1 at Lawrence.

                        Picks: Missouri

Montreal Canadiens at Calgary Flames (-160, 5.5)

Something’s got to give as the Canadiens and Flames are both struggling. Calgary has lost four in a row and the Habs are coming off a 5-2 home-ice loss to the Leafs and have lost seven of nine.

Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau is clearly frustrated.

“We're having trouble scoring goals and it seems that whenever we make a mistake, the puck’s in our net,” he told reporters.

Second-year goalie Carey Price has lost six of eight starts since returning from an ankle injury just prior to the all-star break.

Despite losing four in a row, Flames bench boss Mike Keenan has seen some positives.

“You're never as good as you think you are and never as bad as you think you are, and when you're a good team it's your ability to stop the slides when they come," Keenan told the Calgary Sun.

Both teams are looking to get back on track leading to a tight defensive contest.

                              Pick: Under 5.5

New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils (-145, 5.5)

The New York Rangers have lost four in a row and are coming off of a 10-2 thrashing at the hands of the Dallas Stars.

The Devils have dropped back to back games at home including a 3-1 defeat to the Los Angeles Kings.

“I guess we need a game like that to wake up here," Devils forward Zach Parise told the Star Ledger. "We've got to start playing better at home. You play all season to try and get home ice in the playoffs, and if you're not a good team at home, it's kind of a waste."

These two clubs have split four meetings this season. In each game the total was set at five goals and three times they went over and one time they pushed.

New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist should return to the net and the Rangers will have something to prove in their own end.

                              Pick: Under 5.5
