    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, February 8

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Kobe Bryant and LeBron James battle in Cleveland, and the National Football League caps its campaign at the Pro Bowl.

    Tipping Off in the NBA

It's Kobe vs. LeBron on Sunday afternoon (3:30pm ET tipoff) as the Lakers head to Cleveland to take on the Cavaliers. Bryant and James took turns blasting the Knicks at Madison Square Garden this past week, and they'll each be looking to top their superstar rival on Sunday. The Lakers head into the contest at 40-9 straight-up and 25-23-1 against-the-spread, with the Cavs 39-9 SU and 32-16 ATS.

The other big NBA matinee matchup on Sunday takes place at 1:00pm ET, with the Celtics getting a visit from Tim Duncan and the Spurs; Boston fell 110-109 to the Lakers on Thursday night. There are eight other games on the NBA schedule for Sunday, including New York at Portland, New Jersey at Orlando, Charlotte at Miami, Indiana at Washington, Minnesota at New Orleans, Sacramento at Oklahoma City, and Utah at Golden State. As well, Phoenix will travel to Detroit.

    The March to Madness

The top college hoops matchup on Sunday is a 1:00pm ET battle between No. 12 Purdue and No. 23 Illinois. The Boilermakers are poised to drop in the rankings next week after they fell 80-72 in overtime to Ohio State last time out; they'll need a win over Illinois to impress the voters. The Illini were also defeated in their last outing, as their offense sputtered in a 63-50 loss against Wisconsin.

There are three other ranked teams in action on Sunday, with No. 5 Louisville at St. John's, No. 7 Wake Forest hosting Boston College, and No. 22 Washington hitting the road to meet Stanford; the Huskies fell to Cal 86-71 in their last game.

    A Trip Around the Rink

There are just four NHL games on tap for Sunday, including the Red Wings on the road in Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins in a 12:30pm ET contest. Last year's Stanley Cup finalists have already met once this season, a wild 7-6 Penguins overtime victory in November. Ruslan Fedotenko had the game-winner for Pittsburgh that night, as Detroit blew a 4-2 lead heading into the third period.

The Flyers will play their second game in two days on Sunday, as they'll meet the Thrashers in Atlanta. Also, it's Edmonton at Minnesota, and Nashville at Dallas.

    Rounding Out the Slate

The annual NFC vs. AFC battle takes place on Sunday (4:30pm ET) as the National Football League closes the book on its Hawaii era for the Pro Bowl. Starting next year the league's annual all-star event is slated to take place at the site of the Super Bowl the week before the big game. The NFC won the game at Aloha Stadium 42-30 last year, and they're 2.5-point faves in Sunday's matchup.

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was named the MVP of last year's Pro Bowl, and he'll be back to try and defend that title this time around. The Cardinals' Kurt Warner is the starting quarterback for the NFC, with Drew Brees and Eli Manning backing him up. Peyton Manning is slated to be behind center for the AFC to get things going, and Jay Cutler and Kerry Collins are the reserves.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college hoop Saturday......

        13) Can someone explain to me why St Benedict's (NJ) was playing in a tournament in Los Angeles this weekend? Who pays for this? In an era where money is supposedly tight, why would high school kids fly cross country to play? There aren't enough teams in the east?

        12) John Calipari is a great college coach; his young Memphis Tigers went out west and pounded Gonzaga by 18. Hubert Davis has Zags in Final Four-- no way- they would have lost to St Mary's had Mills not broken his hand in the first half. Gonzaga won't make Sweet 16.

        11) Has Cincinnati passed Georgetown in the Big East pecking order? Bearcats swept the Hoyas, have now won six of last seven games.

        10) Was a bad weekend to be unbeaten in league play-- Friday night, Marquette and Cornell lost, then Saturday, Siena, Davidson, Xavier all lost for the first time in conference play. Davidson had its 49-game Southern Conference winning streak snapped, and at home.

        9) Cal State-Fullerton is just 6-5 in Big West; they're in third place by themselves, only 1.5 games out of first place. Weird league.

        8) Duke was down 16 to Miami with 17:28 left, but won in overtime- Blue Devils play North Carolina next. They're struggling right now.

        7) Kevin Garnett and Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak both went to high school at Farragut Academy in Chicago.

        6) While Baylor, Notre Dame, Georgetown sink like rocks, Nebraska, Cincinnati, South Carolina are strengthening their cases for NCAAs.

        5) James Naismith had to be turning over in his grave when Arizona State went to locker room with a 19-13 lead at half at Oregon State in Corvallis. Awful basketball- Sun Devils wound up winning 49-38.

        4) Clemson can't stand prosperity; after crushing Duke, they lost at home to Florida State, the kind of loss that will cost them seed-wise when the Field of 65 is announced.

        3) Cornell shockingly lost by 20 at Princeton Friday nite, came back with a strong effort Saturday, winning by 15 over Penn in Philly, but now they're chasing Princeton, 4-0 in the Ancient Eight. .

        2) Mississippi State was down 15 at half at home to Arkansas, but rallied to win and cover, 86-77 (-8); talk about pair of schizophrenic teams, these two just run up and down and host treys for 40:00.

        1) Conference USA is ranked 8th in country; where would they be in rankings if Memphis was in the Big East, where they belong? It was obvious the Big East took South Florida for football reasons, but why Marquette/DePaul over Memphis? It still makes no sense.

            Tips and Trends
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Boston Celtics [ABC | 1 PM ET]

Spurs: San Antonio should be well-rested against Boston, as four of the team's five top scorers didn't even play on Tuesday in a 104-96 loss at Denver. The Spurs have not played a game since then and have gone 5-8 ATS on two days of rest or more this season. They are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games overall and needed the rest with six more road games on tap, starting with this meeting with the Celtics. “I think it was a good decision for us,” San Antonio's Tim Duncan said. “Hopefully it pays off for us.”

Spurs are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 road games.
The UNDER is 13-4 in San Antonio's last 17 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - G Manu Ginobili (hip) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 93 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Celtics (-7.5, O/U 189): Boston bounced back from a 110-109 overtime loss to the Lakers on Thursday by beating New York on the road on Friday, 110-100. The Celtics trailed by four points through three quarters but rallied back for the victory. “It was a big win,” Celtics star Paul Pierce said. “I thought we were mentally and physically drained coming into this game, especially after the tough loss. It took us a while. We got off to a slow start, but this team continues to find ways to win.”

Celtics are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games overall.
The OVER is 6-1 in Boston's last 7 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Brian Scalabrine (head) is OUT.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 100

Los Angeles Lakers at Cleveland Cavaliers [ABC | 3:30 PM ET]

Lakers: LA has won nine of its last 10 games and will now try to hand Cleveland its first home loss of the season. The Lakers beat the Cavs 105-88 back on January 19th and hopes to complete season series sweep against both Boston and the Cavs after beating the Celtics on Thursday. Pau Gasol helped out star Kobe Bryant in the team's latest victory, totaling 24 points and 14 rebounds. “(Gasol) was huge,” Bryant said. “He played strong. He played physical. That’s what happens. A team against you is playing physical with you, so you have to play physical right back.”

Lakers are 2-6 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
The OVER is 8-0 in LA's last 8 road games.

Key Injuries - C Andrew Bynum (knee) is OUT.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 101

Cavs (-4.5, O/U 206): Cleveland star LeBron James is upset that teammate Mo Williams won't be going to the NBA All-Star Game as a replacement for Orlando's Jameer Nelson. James also wants people to know he plays the game simply to win and doesn't care about individual accolades. “I don’t go out there for the numbers, I just play my game,” James said. “You guys seen every phase of my game, the scoring, the rebounding, the assists and defensively just trying to attack the opposing team.”

Cavs are 21-5 ATS in their last 26 home games.
The UNDER is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Sasha Pavlovic (flu) is probable.
G Delonte West (wrist) is OUT.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 105

#13 Purdue at #21 Illinois [CBS | 1 PM ET]

Purdue: The Boilermakers saw their six-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday at Ohio State and will try to get back on track against the Illini. Purdue lost in overtime to the Buckeyes 80-72 and also fell in OT to Illinois in the first meeting earlier this season, 71-67. The Boilermakers could be without star Robbie Hummel, who is dealing with a hairline fracture in his back and missed the team's last game.

Purdue is 7-3-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
The OVER is 5-1 in Purdue's last 6 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Robbie Hummel (back) is questionable.

However, they have also struggled with their offense lately, averaging 49.3 points in losing two of their last three games. Illinois made only 32.8 percent of its shots in a 63-50 loss at Wisconsin on Thursday. “We missed a lot of open shots,” Illinois head coach Bruce Weber said. “It’s been like that for a while.”

Los Angeles Lakers at Cleveland Cavaliers (-4, 206)

Cleveland, which has won eight of its last nine games, boasts the top record in the East and can take over the league's best record by defeating Western Conference-leading Los Angeles.

The Lakers, who have won nine of 10, already defeated the Cavs 105-88 on Jan. 19, and would own the tiebreaker for home-court advantage in the finals - if they both make it - with a victory Sunday.

Winning at Cleveland won't be easy, though, as the Cavs have won all 23 games at Quicken Loans Arena this season. They've also won four straight home games over the Lakers since a 111-106 overtime loss on Feb. 4, 2004.

Neither James nor Bryant had stellar performances in their meeting at Staples Center three weeks ago. James had 23 points on 9-of-25 shooting, nine rebounds and four assists, while Bryant finished with 20 points on 9-of-22 shooting, 12 assists and five turnovers. Bryant, an 11-time All-Star averaging 27.5 points, suffered a dislocated right ring finger, but stayed in the game

Pau Gasol, Los Angeles' other All-Star, led the Lakers with 22 points and 13 boards in the win over the Cavs, and has stepped up his game since center Andrew Bynum was lost for eight to 12 weeks to a knee injury.

Gasol had 24 points and 14 rebounds in Thursday's 110-109 overtime victory over Boston, snapping the Celtics' 12-game win streak in a rematch of last season's NBA finals. The 7-footer is averaging 28.7 points on 70.8 percent shooting and 14.3 boards in three games since Bynum got hurt.

"(Gasol) was huge," said Bryant, who had 26 points and 10 rebounds. "He played strong. He played physical. That's what happens. A team against you is playing physical with you, so you have to play physical right back."

The Lakers snapped a five-game losing streak to the Cavs with the win three weeks ago, and have not swept a season series from them since 2003-04 - James' rookie season.

                            Pick: Lakers +4

Phoenix Suns at Detroit Pistons (-1, 195)

Detroit is seeking a third straight victory for the first time since its season-high seven-game winning streak from Dec. 23-Jan. 4. Pistons veteran Richard Hamilton scored 38 points off the bench - the most by a reserve in franchise history - in Saturday's 126-121 overtime win over injury-plagued Milwaukee.

Since making the move from starter to sub on Jan. 21, Hamilton has averaged 17.8 points on 47.8 percent shooting in eight games after scoring 16.7 points per game on 44.8 percent shooting in 32 as a starter.

"The simple fact that now I'm coming off the bench I ain't got time to get warmed up," said Hamilton, who is second on team with 16.9 points per game. "I have to come in on fire every time."

While Hamilton has quickly acclimated to his new role, some of his teammates have struggled. Amir Johnson, who has started seven of eight games since Hamilton's switch, has averaged 3.5 points in those games.

Tayshaun Prince has also averaged 9.2 points over the past six contests - considerably below his 13.8-point average. Rodney Stuckey, who has also scored 13.8 points per game and earned a starting spot this season, has shot 32.4 percent in his last three games and went 1-for-10 with six points on Saturday.

The Pistons had lost 10 of their previous 14 games before winning their last two.

Stoudemire had 29 points and 11 rebounds as the Suns shot 56.9 percent in routing the Pistons 104-86 on Nov. 16. Phoenix, which has not swept the season series since 1999-2000, has lost four of its last five at Detroit.

                            Pick: Over 195
