    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, February 6

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Pacers have to deal with the Magic, Marquette takes on South Florida, and the Pens try for a win against the Jackets.

    Tipping Off in the NBA

The Magic blasted the Clippers 125-96 on Wednesday night, with Anthony Johnson scoring a team-high 25 points and Dwight Howard grabbing 15 rebounds. Orlando's next game comes on Friday night, as they hit the road to take on the Pacers in Indiana. Magic guard Jameer Nelson won't be in the lineup on Friday; his dislocated shoulder should keep him out of action for 2-to-6 weeks.

Another Eastern division leader is also in action on Friday, as the Celtics go to New York to play the Knicks. As well, it'll be Atlanta at Charlotte, Toronto at New Orleans, Portland at Oklahoma City, Denver at Washington, the Clippers at Memphis, and Utah at Sacramento, while Golden State has a game in Phoenix.

    The March to Madness

The only ranked college hoops team in action on Friday is No. 8 Marquette, which will travel to the Sun Dome to play South Florida. The Golden Eagles (20-2 SU, 10-6-1 ATS) had no trouble beating DePaul last time out, winning by a final score of 76-61. The Bulls (7-14 SU, 11-9 ATS) sit near the bottom of the Big East standings, and they were trampled 65-48 by St. John's in their Sunday meeting.

    A Trip Around the Rink

After rallying past the Lightning on Wednesday night Evgeni Malkin and his Penguins will try to stay in the win column on Friday when they play host to the Blue Jackets. Pittsburgh has been slipping down the Eastern Conference standings over the past couple of weeks. Columbus is coming off a 4-2 loss to St. Louis last time out, and starting netminder Steve Mason is playing through mono.

The Sabres blasted the Maple Leafs on Wednesday night, and they'll try to do the same to another division rival on Friday when they get a visit from the Canadiens. There are three other games on the NHL's slate for the night, with New Jersey at Atlanta, Nashville at Minnesota, and finally the Rangers at Dallas.

    Rounding Out the Slate

The PGA Tour's Buick Invitational continues on Friday and through the weekend, but bettors who want to focus on a bigger event can already lay down some cash on The Masters. Vegas oddsmakers have Tiger Woods pegged as the 2/1 favorite to win the year's first major, a bet which carries some extra risk as the world's top player recovers from his injury. Phil Mickelson is next at 10/1 odds, with Padraig Harrington and Sergio Garcia following him on the list at 15/1 odds. Last year's champion, Trevor Immelman, is back at 50/1 odds to get the repeat.

Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college hoop Thursday........

        13) St John's got pounded at Seton Hall, Georgia Tech lost by four at Florida State; wouldn't it make sense for Paul Hewitt to leave Tech to become coach of the Red Storm? Tech might be the hardest job in the ACC, with its tougher academic standards, while New York would be thrilled to get a name coach on St John's' bench. It makes sense.

        12) Santa Barbara was up 19 at the half in Fullerton Thursday, then fell apart in second half, losing 72-65, as Titans won fourth game in a row since getting whacked on ESPN2 by Pacific.

        11) Washington is 5-2 in last seven games, but the last two Thursday nights, Huskies lost both games, allowing a total of 126 points in the two second halves. Thats 126 points in 40 minutes.

        10) Notre Dame forced only 14 turnovers in its last three games, 62 in their last eight; Four of their last six opponents scored 87+ points.

        9) Indiana isn't very good, but they can shoot; they made 42-79 from arc in their last four games, after being 20-71 in first five Big 11 tilts.

        8) For whatever reason, Florida's last three opponents combined to make just 24-52 from the foul line, while the Gators were 53-73.

        7) Memphis has 50 consecutive games in Conference USA; its not a great league, but 50 straight wins is impressive, even if you're in the freakin' California Penal League. UAB, Southern Mississippi, UTEP, Tulsa and Houston are all decent teams in Conference USA.

        6) Wisconsin snapped its six-game skid, handing Illinois their fourth road loss in a row, avenging an earlier loss.

        5) Louisiana Tech won in Reno as a 13-point dog, shooting 60% in a 78-75 win at Nevada, just the third win in 10 WAC games for Tech.

        4) No one in the Big West has less than three losses; the conference tournament in Anaheim will be one of the more wide-open events, so those byes are going to be important to have.

        3) Morehead State was leading OVC until they lost at Jacksonville St Thursday; Eagles are now tied for first with Tennessee-Martin, who won at Austin Peay, avenging an earlier loss to the Governors.

        2) Memphis-Gonzaga is the main event Saturday night; Zags won at Portland Thursday, as young Pilots got their first taste of a big game, leading by point at half, then fading after intermission. Gonzaga looks like a team that will make noise in March.

        1) There were 44 lined games Thursday night; the team that trailed at halftime won 20 of those 44 games, a surprisingly high number.

Denver Nuggets at Washington Wizards [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Nuggets (NA): Carmelo Anthony made up for the loss of Chauncey Billups and Kenyon Martin on Wednesday, leading Denver to a 114-113 victory at Oklahoma City. Anthony totaled 32 points and a career-high 11 assists, hitting the game-winning shot on a runner with 5.3 seconds left. He has stepped up since getting snubbed from the Western Conference All-Star team and looks recovered from a broken hand. “I got to be honest, I didn’t think I would make it,” Anthony said of his game-winning shot. “There was a bunch of people on me, but it went in. I’ll take it.”

Nuggets are 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
The OVER is 7-2 in Denver's last 9 games vs. Eastern Conference.

Key Injuries - G Chauncey Billups (ankle) is questionable.
F Kenyon Martin (virus) is questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Wizards: Washington has dropped seven of eight and hopes to have Caron Butler back in the lineup after a bout with the flu. Butler missed a 115-88 loss to New Jersey on Wednesday, and the Wizards struggled with one of their top shooters. They made only 3-of-18 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc and shot 42.4 percent overall. “We were short some players, including one of our key players, and we knew it was going to be a hard night for us, but we were trying,” Washington guard Nick Young said. “We went out there trying to get a victory, but we just came up short. Shots that normally go in weren’t going in for us.”

Wizards are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 home games.
The OVER is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Caron Butler (flu) is questionable.
G DeShawn Stevenson (back) is day-to-day.
G Juan Dixon (elbow) is day-to-day.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Golden State Warriors at Phoenix Suns [ESPN | 10:30 PM ET]

Warriors: Golden State will try for a home-and-home sweep with Phoenix, although the second game should be much tougher considering past performances on the road. The Warriors are just 5-22 on the road this season and have been held to 93 points or less in their last three away from home. However, Wednesday's 124-112 win over the Suns may be just what the team needs to snap a six-game road skid in the series. “It shows signs of us growing and having confidence in each other,” Golden State swingman Stephen Jackson said. “It was fun to watch us play like that. We shared the ball probably the best we’ve shared it all year. That’s what we’ve been looking for all season, and it’s good to know we found it in time for us to make a run for the playoffs.”

Warriors are 8-20-1 ATS in their last 29 road games.
The OVER is 8-3 in Golden State's last 11 games vs. Pacific Division.

Key Injuries - F Brandan Wright (shoulder) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Suns (-9.5, O/U 230.5): There have been rumors swirling in Phoenix that All-Star forward Amare Stoudemire could be on the move before the NBA trade deadline, which could continue to have a negative impact on the team according to league insiders. Stoudemire had only 13 points in Wednesday's loss at Golden State and has become increasingly frustrated with his role in the offense. “It is harder,” Stoudemire said. “When you’re in the flow, everything flows. When you’re not, sometimes it’s hard to get involved. To keep losing these games the way we are, it’s not fun. I’m not used to it. It’s almost against my religion.”

Home team is 19-7 ATS in the last 26 meetings.
The OVER is 6-2 in Phoenix's last 8 games vs. Western Conference.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Memphis Grizzlies (-5.5, 198.5)

L.A. needs to redeem itself after Wednesday's blowout loss to the Orlando Magic.

The Clippers have lost nine of their last 10, but a matchup with the struggling Grizzlies could help L.A. get on track, especially with a healthy Zach Randolph in the line-up.

Randolph made his return Monday after missing 19 contests with a sore left knee. The former Michigan State Spartan says the Clips need to get some bodies back before they can complete against top-tier teams.

"Once everybody gets back healthy, we're going to be OK," Randolph told reporters.

Luckily for L.A., the Grizzlies are not an elite club.

Memphis is 2-8 straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) in its last 10.

                Pick: Clippers

Atlanta Hawks at Charlotte Bobcats (NA)

The Hawks, who are fourth in the East, are 28-20 overall and are 14-11 ATS on the road, including Wednesday's shorthanded triumph over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Despite not having Joe Johnson in the lineup Wednesday, Atlanta was able to pull out a road victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. They had three players score 19 or more points against the Timberwolves.

"It's huge," Marvin Williams told reporters. "It shows the growth of our team not having him [Johnson] in the lineup and still coming away with a win."

The Bobcats, meanwhile, have dropped three straight and are 0-3 ATS in that period.

                Pick: Hawks

New Jersey Devils at Atlanta Thrashers (+160, 5.5)

The New Jersey Devils will be hungry for a win in Atlanta for a couple of reasons. In January the Thrashers blanked the Devils 4-0 in Atlanta and New Jersey is also looking to bounce back from a 5-2 home loss to the Capitals.

"We made two bad mistakes killing penalties on their first two goals," Devils coach Brent Sutter told the Star Ledger after his club surrendered three power-play markers. "A good team like Washington is going to capitalize on that.”

The Thrashers are coming off an impressive 2-1 shootout win over the Rangers in New York. Atlanta is one of the worst defensive clubs in the league allowing over 3.5 goals per game.

Devils will be looking to avenge the 4-0 loss which should mean trouble for Atlanta.

                            Pick: New Jersey

Columbus Blue Jackets at Pittsburgh Penguins (-190, 5.5)

Pittsburgh is coming off a huge come-from-behind win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The media in Pittsburgh claim that Evgeni Malkin saved the season by leading the comeback charge and scoring the overtime winner.

"He really took the game over," Penguins coach Michel Therrien said. "This is what you expect from your best players at crucial times. You could see the fire was in his eyes.”

The Penguins are riding a high right now and that could spell trouble for the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets. Star rookie goalie Steve Mason has been feeling under the weather lately and it has shown on the scoreboard. The Jackets have given up 11 goals in their last two games.

                            Pick: Pittsburgh
