        Ice Picks: NHL Bets
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at Washington Capitals (-275, 5.5)

The Los Angeles Kings are coming off a tight defensive effort against a lowly Ottawa offense. The same effort won’t cut it against the Capitals. Washington walked into New Jersey and picked up an impressive 5-2 win Tuesday.

“If you don't score, sometimes you start to think about it too much. It goes in ups and downs, but I have to just keep doing what I'm doing." Michael Nylander told the Washington Times. Nylander scored twice against the Devils but has just seven goals on the year.

The Kings and Caps met earlier this year in Los Angeles with the crowned crew coming out on top with a 5-2 win. Alexander Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom were a combined minus eight in that game.

The Capitals have won 21 of 25 games on home ice this season.

        PICK: Washington -275

Dallas Stars at Colorado Avalanche (+110, 5.5)

The Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche don’t have a lot in common this season however they are both coming off wins over the Calgary Flames.

Dallas is arguably the hottest team in the league right now and a second half surge has pushed it right back into the midst of a tight playoff race in the Western Conference. During a five-game winning streak goaltender Marty Turco has only surrendered seven goals. Turco is a workhorse this season starting 20 games in a row heading into Thursday’s battle with Colorado.

Colorado has won just two of its past nine games, both of them were victories over Calgary. The Avalanche penalty kill is among the worst in the league this season.

"Specialty teams are a huge factor in this league, and we're not doing the job," Avs defenseman Ruslan Salei told the Denver Post. "We can't give up a PK goal every game. One goal can win or lose you the game, and we've been losing the games lately."

Dallas is hot and, outside of Calgary, the Avalanche are losing to everyone.

        PICK: Dallas -120

Los Angeles Lakers at Boston Celtics [TNT | 8 PM ET]

Lakers: LA returns to the site of Boston's championship celebration following Game 6 of the 2008 NBA Finals, and at least one person has not forgotten that memorable experience. “We had our most disappointing moments on that Boston Celtic court in Game 6,” Lakers head coach Phil Jackson said. “To be not only beaten, but humiliated, in a game like that to end the series, and have them celebrating and throwing (stuff) all over the court, disrupting the game with 2 1/2 minutes left to go. It was in your face and everybody remembers that. There’s a certain element of, you know, we have some serious work to do.”

Lakers are 1-8 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
The OVER is 7-1 in LA's last 8 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Andrew Bynum (knee) is OUT.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 99

Celtics (-5.5, O/U 204): Boston got the day off on Wednesday, as All-Star forward Kevin Garnett is still recovering from the flu. Garnett is expected to return after missing two games, and his presence could be the key since Lakers center Andrew Bynum is out 8-12 weeks with a tear in his right knee. That will obviously mean more pressure on LA star Kobe Bryant, who has totaled 97 points in the last two games. “It’ll be one for the ages,” Celtics guard Ray Allen said. “People will be excited. It’s a big game. It’s definitely a playoff atmosphere. We lost to them to the first time so we’ll be looking forward to it.”

Celtics are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
The OVER is 4-1 in Boston's last 5 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Kevin Garnett (flu) is probable.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 105

Dallas Mavericks at Utah Jazz [TNT | 10:30 PM ET]

Mavs: Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle has allowed point guard Jason Kidd to call the plays offensively in the last four games, and the experiment has worked to perfection. The Mavs have won all four games, averaging 109.4 points on 54.4 percent shooting. “We believe in one another,” Kidd said. “We believe defensively and offensively that we can go out there and get some wins. The guys are playing at a high level and we are having fun doing it.”

Mavs are 7-21-1 ATS in their last 29 Thursday games.
The UNDER is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings at Utah.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 103

Jazz (-3, O/U 208): Utah doesn't know if point guard Deron Williams will be available to play against the Mavs after he suffered a knee contusion at Portland on Saturday. Williams missed Monday's 105-86 rout of Charlotte on Monday and will be a game-time decision. Mehmet Okur and Ronnie Brewer scored a combined 43 points in the win over the Bobcats. “You never know what to expect with as many guys as we have out,” Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan said. “We had to have a lot of guys play well in order for us to win.”

Jazz are 10-1-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings at Utah.
The OVER is 14-4 in Utah's last 18 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Deron Williams (quad) is questionable.
G C.J. Miles (shoulder) is questionable.
F Andrei Kirilenko (ankle) is OUT.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 105

Temple at #9 Xavier [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Temple: The Owls looks to break Xavier's 20-game home winning streak in conference games and will likely need a much better start than they did on Saturday against Richmond. They scored a season-low 16 points in the first half but rallied back with a season-high 58 after the intermission en route to a 74-65 victory. “It was really a hard-fought game,” Temple head coach Fran Dunphy said. “I knew we’d have some problems scoring, but I didn’t think it would be that difficult in the first half.”

Temple is 19-7 ATS in its last 26 games vs. Atlantic 10.
The UNDER is 17-5 in Temple's last 22 games as an underdog.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 65 (Side Play of the Day)

Xavier (-9, O/U 135): Musketeers guard B.J. Raymond will try to exorcise some demons against Temple and score 20 points or more for the fourth straight game. Raymond is the reigning A-10 Player of the Week, but he was held scoreless in the last meeting with the Owls a little more than a year ago. He missed all seven shots from the field in 18 minutes of action and has grown into a leader this year. “Every game is going to be tough,” Raymond said. “We’re going to take everybody’s best shot.”

Xavier is 8-1 ATS in its last 9 games overall.
The UNDER is 3-1 in Xavier's last 4 home games.

Key Injuries - G Terrell Holloway (foot) is questionable.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 70

#21 Illinois at Wisconsin [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Illinois: The Illini have had a rough time on the road lately, dropping three straight away from home following their worst offensive performance since 1985 in a 59-36 loss at Minnesota a week ago. They rebounded with a 62-54 win over Iowa at home on Sunday, and head coach Bruce Weber believes his team will be in the right mindset to end the road skid at Madison. “You feel as low as you can feel,” Weber said after losing to the Golden Gophers. “It’s a humbler, that’s for sure. If it isn’t, we’re in trouble.”

Illinois is 2-8 ATS in its last 10 Thursday games.
The UNDER is 5-1 in Illinois' last 6 games overall.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 57 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Wisconsin (-3, O/U 121): The Badgers are struggling through their worst losing streak in over a decade and now face the possibility of losing three in a row at home for the first time since the first month they started playing in the Kohl Center. Wisconsin has lost its last two home games by a combined four points, and the team's last three road losses have been decided by 4.7 points.

Home team is 3-7-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Wisconsin's last 8 Thursday games.
