    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, February 3

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Celtics try to run their winning streak to 12 games, the Tar Heels take on the Terrapins, and the Penguins visit Montreal.

    Tipping Off in the NBA

With their early-January swoon now well behind them the Celtics will be gunning for their 12th consecutive victory on Tuesday night when they play on the road against the Sixers. Boston improved to 40-9 straight-up and 28-21 against-the-spread on the season with a 109-101 win over Minnesota on Sunday, with Kevin Garnett sidelined for the game with the flu. Philadelphia fell 85-83 to New Jersey in their last contest, and they now sit at just 23-23 SU and 22-23-1 ATS this year.

A Western Conference clash between the Spurs and Nuggets in Denver highlights the rest of the NBA slate for Tuesday night. LeBron James and his Cavaliers will try to boost their lucrative 31-15 ATS record when they play host to the Raptors, while the Timberwolves will play in Indiana, and Chicago is at Houston. As well, the Nets round out the action for the night by hosting the Bucks.

    The March to Madness

Coming off an easy 93-76 win over N.C. State, North Carolina will take the court in Chapel Hill on Tuesday night for a game against Maryland. Tyler HanXXXough picked up 31 points and six rebounds for the Tar Heels in their win over the Wolfpack, which put them at 19-2 SU and 10-10 ATS on the season. The Terrapins (14-7 SU, 7-6-2 ATS) are coming off a 73-68 win over the Hurricanes.

Marquette will head to Rosemont to meet lowly DePaul on Tuesday night, while Ohio State hosts Purdue, and Kentucky gets a visit from Mississippi State. As well, struggling Georgetown will try to get back on track against Rutgers. The Hoyas have now lost five games in a row to sit at 12-8 SU and 6-9-1 ATS on the season. The Scarlet Knights (10-12 SU, 9-7 ATS) beat DePaul in their last game.

    A Trip Around the Rink

Evgeni Malkin and the Penguins will try to add to the Canadiens' woes on Tuesday night when they arrive in Montreal for a 7:30pm ET puck drop. The Habs lost 3-1 to rival Boston on Sunday afternoon, and they also lost key center Robert Lang indefinitely with a serious achilles injury. The Penguins are coming off a wild 5-4 loss to the Maple Leafs on Saturday night to end January 24-22-5.

Alexander Ovechkin had a hat trick against the Senators in a 7-4 Capitals win on Sunday; he'll take his show to New Jersey to play the Devils on Tuesday. Also on the NHL's slate for the night: St. Louis at Columbus, Tampa Bay at the Islanders, Florida at Toronto, Los Angeles at Ottawa, Phoenix at Nashville, Atlanta at the Rangers, Chicago at Edmonton, Calgary at Dallas, and Carolina at Vancouver.

    Rounding Out the Slate

If you bet on the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII on Sunday night you saw them blow their chance to cover the posted spread in the fourth quarter of the OVER result. That means you only have one more chance to make up for that lost NFL cash this season: The Pro Bowl. The annual NFC/AFC matchup is set to kick off at 4:30pm ET on Sunday from Hawaii, with wagering lines trickling out this week.

Tuesday's List of 13: Emptying out a cluttered mind........

        13) Baseball commissioner Bud Selig, a former used car salesman, has hit the lottery in his current job; he made $17,470,491 last season, up from $14,515,071 the year before. Imagine what he would make if his sport was run really well, where everyone had a chance to win.

        12) One thing they've done well is the new MLB Network, which is showing games from Caribbean World Series in Mexicali this week. At first glance, this network looks like it will be very good.

        11) Mets gave Oliver Perez $36M for three years, the same offer as Derek Lowe, who refused it, then got more from Atlanta. We'll see if they sign Pedro Martinez, but their rotation looks a lot like 2008's.

        10) Why would anyone hire Bob Knight at this point in his career? Anyone have any ideas? Georgia has to compete against Kentucky, Tennessee and Florida in its division; hiring a 68-year old with tons of baggage isn't a great idea, especially since he isn't known as a great recruiter. In this day and age, players win games, not coaches.

        9) UConn held Louisville to 34.4% from floor, won easily in Freedom Hall without making a trey; they did outscore Louisville 22-2 on the foul line. The big kid Thabeet is a dominant force in the middle.

        8) How to get around coaching limits; Baylor has a student manager named David Wesley, who is 17 credits short of graduation. A lot of student managers are dorky kids who are coaching wannabes (like me when I was in college), but Wesley played dozen years in the NBA, and has to be a valuable resource for the guard-rich Bears.

        7) One thing I wanted to see in the Super Bowl- Would Steelers have taken an intentional safety from their own 1-yard line? They wound up getting the safety anyway, but it would have been a fascinating decision to see what they would have done. We'll never know.

        6) NBC's Dan Patrick actually asked Mike Tomlin if he felt "over his head" at any point during his tenure as Steeler coach. What a stupid question, like even if he did feel that way, if he would admit it after he just won the Super Bowl in his second year as coach. Not good.

        5) Wouldn't be surprised to see John Madden walk away from NBC now; he is 72, he won't work another Super Bowl until the next TV contract, probably 2013 at the earliest, when he would be 76. Seems like a logical stopping point for a terrific career.

        4) How do the Chiefs not hire Todd Haley as their head coach?

        3) NFC West could be in chaos next year if Kurt Warner retires and Anquan Boldin is traded; the other three teams all have new coaches, so its going to be a lot different looking division next season, even if the NFC champion Cardinals return largely intact.

        2) The NFL is less than forthcoming on how they handle replays at the end of games; remember the end of the Charger-Steeler game, and the TD on the fumble that was nullified by replay? The referee had nothing to do with that, since he announced the wrong decision, just like the Warner fumble on the last play was reviewed Sunday, but in the replay booth, not by the referee, like all other reviews are. Makes you wonder why they do this, and open themselves up to criticism?

        1) Would have been terrific irony had the Cardinals won Super Bowl, since Joe Namath presented Lombardi Trophy to the winning team; when he came out of Alabama and signed with the AFL's New York Jets instead of the more established NFL, the team he spurned? None other than Bill Bidwill's St Louis Cardinals.

                Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Raptors at Cleveland Cavaliers (-10.5, 194)

The Cavaliers are rolling and Toronto is reeling. Tuesday could be tough night for the Raptors.

Toronto has lost two straight and seven of its last 10 overall, including Sunday's 23-point loss to the Orlando Magic.

"I hope it's not a lack of effort and I don't think it is," Raptors head coach Jay Triano told the Toronto Star after Sunday's loss.

"I think our guys are trying, we played a team that has 36 wins and they're pretty good for a reason. "

It only gets tougher Tuesday for the Raps.

The Cavs, who have 39 wins, are unbeaten at home and have won seven of their last 10. They are 5-2 against the spread (ATS) in their last seven against Toronto and are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 home tilts against a club with a losing road record.

                Pick: Cavaliers

Minnesota Timberwolves at Indiana Pacers (N/A)

Despite consecutive setbacks to the Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics, the T-Wolves are still one of the New Year's best bets.

Minnesota has covered the spread in six of its last 10 and, discounting its current losing streak, is 10-2 against the spread (ATS) in 2009.

The T-Wolves have risen in the ranks thanks to Al Jefferson, who is putting up more than 23 points, 10 rebounds and 1.7 blocks a night.

"Jefferson is one of the best low-post players in the game," Milwaukee Bucks guard Luke Ridnour told reporters. "He gets the ball where he wants and he's tough to defend."

Big Al should have his way against the Pacers, who rank 28th in the league in opponent scoring (107.0 PPG) and 21st in opponent field goal percentage (46.1 percent).

                Pick: Timberwolves

#13 Purdue at Ohio State [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Purdue (-2, O/U 128): The Boilermakers will be going for their seventh straight win overall but have a rather large obstacle in front of them at Columbus. They have not won in their last nine trips to Ohio State and are hoping to continue their strong run following an impressive win over Michigan on Saturday. Purdue trailed the Wolverines by one point at halftime but outscored them 42-23 in the second half for a 67-49 victory. “I told our guys that this was a gut-check game,” Boilermakers head coach Matt Painter said. “We’ve been in tough, pressure situations before, and I’m proud of my guys.”’

Purdue is 13-5-1 ATS in its last 19 road games.
The OVER is 6-2 in Purdue's last 8 games overall.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Ohio State: The Buckeyes will be counting on Evan Turner to build off a strong stretch in which he was named Big Ten Player of the Week. Turner has averaged 24 points in his last three games in leading his team to a 2-1 mark. Unfortunately, Ohio State's lone loss during that stretch came against #9 Michigan State at home. That setback dropped the Buckeyes to just 1-4 in their last five games against ranked teams from the Big Ten. Ohio State is 3-0 in its other conference home games this season.

Ohio State is 11-3-1 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
The OVER is 3-1 in Ohio State's last 4 home games.

Key Injuries - G David Lighty (foot) is OUT.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

South Carolina at Florida [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

South Carolina: The Gamecocks find themselves in an unlikely position heading into this nationally televised matchup with Florida following a stunning win at Kentucky on Saturday - tied with the Gators and Wildcats atop the SEC East. “We’ve been pretty fortunate,” South Carolina head coach Darrin Horn said . “We’ve been involved in the kind of games that can literally go either way. Sometimes you get the ball last and make a play and the other team doesn’t. Our guys are giving good effort and they’re playing well together."

Underdog is 7-2-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
The UNDER is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Branden Conrad (foot) is OUT.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Florida (-8.5, O/U 151.5): The Gators will be trying to rebound from a rough 79-63 loss at Tennessee on Saturday and avoid a similar collapse from a year ago. Florida went 3-8 last February to miss out on the NCAA tournament following back-to-back national championships, and the players are confident there will not be a repeat. “People can talk all they want, but we’re a 10-times better team than last year,” Gators sophomore forward Chandler Parsons. “We’ve just got to learn from this and make some progress because we play South Carolina next, and they’re a very good team.”

Florida is 5-13 ATS in its last 18 home games.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Florida's last 8 games overall.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

Maryland Terrapins at North Carolina Tar Heels (-21.5)

North Carolina (19-2, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) won its first 18 games a season ago before falling 82-80 to Maryland on Jan. 19, 2008. It was the Tar Heels' second straight loss in this series overall, and the eighth win in 22 visits to the Smith Center for the Terrapins. Only Duke (10) has won there more times as a visitor.

Another Maryland (14-7, 3-4) win in this matchup would certainly be a surprise. North Carolina earned its fifth straight win Saturday, 93-76 victory over North Carolina State. After seeing his run of consecutive games scoring in double figures end at 55 in Wednesday's 80-77 win over Florida State, Tyler HanXXXough had 31 points against the Wolfpack.

North Carolina shot 56.5 percent from the field and scored 90 points or more for the 11th time this season. The Tar Heels rank second in Division I with 92.4 points per game.

Regardless of the outcome in Chapel Hill, it appears Maryland coach Gary Williams will keep his job. Athletic director Debbie Yow squashed any speculation Monday that Williams' future with the team is in jeopardy.

"He has my full support, as he does from the department and from the university," Yow said. "He and I communicate regularly, and a couple of things he's communicated to me are pretty important. One of these is he's very optimistic about the future, and he's very focused about recruiting."

Maryland is 0-3 on the road this season, with all of those losses coming in conference play.

                          Pick: Maryland

Marquette Golden Eagles at DePaul Blue Demons (+11.5)

With talent like Wesley Matthews and Lazar Hayward around, there are games when Jerel McNeal may not even be Marquette's top all-around player, let alone one of the best players in the Big East and perhaps the entire country.Lately, he's been all of the above.

Looking for his sixth straight 20-point performance, McNeal will try to lead the eighth-ranked Golden Eagles to their 12th consecutive victory Tuesday night as the Big East's lone unbeaten travels to DePaul, which is still seeking its first conference win.

McNeal's scoring average has gone up in each of his four years at Marquette, rising from 11.1 as a freshman to 14.7 as a sophomore before a modest jump to 14.9 points per game last season.

As a senior, McNeal has increased his average to 19.7 ppg - third in the Big East - and he, Matthews (19.2) and Hayward (16.6) have the Golden Eagles (19-2, 8-0 Big East) averaging 81.6 points, good for 10th in the nation.

McNeal had 26 points, a career-high 11 assists, six rebounds, five steals and three blocks as Marquette used a 52-point second half to run past Georgetown 94-82 on Saturday.

With No. 5 Louisville losing Monday night to top-ranked Connecticut, the Golden Eagles are the only remaining Big East team without a loss in conference play.

Marquette has already beaten DePaul (8-14, 0-9) once this season, 79-70 in Milwaukee on Jan. 24. McNeal, a Chicago native, had 21 points and six steals, Matthews scored 20 points and Hayward added 16 points and 17 rebounds.

The Blue Demons entered their most recent game as one of two Big East teams still looking for a league win, and after a 75-56 drubbing on Saturday at Rutgers, they're the only one left.It was the ninth straight loss overall for DePaul, which shot only 34.5 percent.

Leading scorer Dar Tucker struggled the most, knocking down just 5 of 17 shots for 14 points. Tucker, whose 18.5 ppg rank fifth in the conference, is shooting 34.3 percent in his last four games.

                          Pick: Marquette
