    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, February 2

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Lakers hit the Big Apple, UConn takes on Louisville in Big East action, and the Red Wings look to end their losing streak.

    Tipping Off in the NBA

The Lakers will be looking to break their 23-23 ATS deadlock on Monday night when they travel east to take on the Knicks. Los Angeles (37-9 straight-up) cruised past the Grizzlies for a 115-98 win last time out, although center Andrew Bynum sprained his knee and could miss significant time. New York (21-25 SU, 27-19 ATS) is coming off a 122-113 win over the Pacers on Saturday night, and they've managed to string together a three-game winning streak in the past week.

Monday night's schedule includes seven other games on the NBA hardwood, including the other Los Angeles team playing down in Miami. The Mavericks will be in the Sunshine State as well to take on Orlando, while Memphis has a road game in Washington. A big Western clash has Portland in New Orleans, and it's also Sacramento at Phoenix, Charlotte at Utah, and San Antonio at Golden State.

    The March to Madness

A Big East matchup highlights the college hoops schedule for Monday, with Connecticut heading to Freedom Hall to meet Louisville. The Huskies (20-1 SU, 10-7 ATS) are coming off an easy 94-61 win over Providence, with A.J. Price tossing in 19 points. The Cardinals (17-3 SU, 12-8 ATS) held off West Virginia for a 69-63 win in their last game, with Jerry Smith pouring in a team-high 20 points.

Ranked Pittsburgh will look to improve on their 13-0 home record on Monday when they host Robert Morris in a potential blowout; the Panthers are coming off a 93-80 win over Notre Dame. The only other ranked team on tap for Monday is Butler, which is 8-1 on the road heading into action versus Wisconsin-Green Bay.

    A Trip Around the Rink

The Red Wings lost five straight games to end January, capping off their month with a 4-2 defeat in Washington on Saturday afternoon. That puts Detroit at 31-11-7 heading into their home game against 20-24-4 St. Louis on Monday night. The Blues blanked the Flyers 4-0 behind Chris Mason's goaltending on Saturday.

A light Monday has only two other games on the NHL schedule, with Calgary on the road against Colorado, and Anaheim at home for a matchup versus Buffalo.

    Rounding Out the Slate

The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series start to set their sights on the 2009 season this week, with the Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway taking place on Saturday night. That'll be followed by the Gatorade Duel events on February 12, while the season-opening race, the Daytona 500, is February 15. Kyle Busch is sitting as the 4/1 Vegas favorite to win the Daytona 500 right now, with Jimmie Johnson next at 5/1, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. just behind at 6/1.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- Super Bowl is recession-proof; NBC pulled in $206M in ads for the telecast, an all-time record.

-- Kenny Perry beat Charlie Hoffman on third playoff hole to win his 13th PGA Tour event out in Phoenix.

-- Penn State upset Michigan State in East Lansing as Talor Battle, who is from Albany, scored 29 for the Nittany Lions.

-- Two best teams in Horizon League play Monday, when Butler is off to Wisconsin-Green Bay.

-- UConn is #1 in country and 2.5-point underdog Monday night in Louisville, in what should be a tremendous game.

-- Detroit Lions, you're on the clock for the 2009 NFL Draft.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up Super Bowl Sunday........

        13) Big difference between these 9-7 Cardinals and the 9-7 Rams who made Super Bowl XIV; these Redbirds clinched a bad NFC West on Columbus Day, pretty much. They coasted down the stretch. Rams in '79 were 5-6 at one point, a putrid team, and didn't get hot down the stretch until Vince Ferragamo replaced Pat Haden at QB- it was a good thing for them the NFC West was weak that year, too.

        12) Odd fact that means nothing: NFC team has won the coin flip in the last twelve Super Bowls.

        11) NBC's NFL telecasts lose all credibility with Matt Millen posing as an "expert". They were smart in putting Super Bowl winners Mike Holmgren and Tony Dungy on the pre-game show, but Millen? Jesus, its like having Weird Al Yankovic analyzing the Grammys.

        10) How was Mike Martz not on the pre-game show? Who has better insight into Kurt Warner than Martz? He's actually coached in Super Bowls, and Lord knows he needs a job now. Bad job by NBC.

        9) Thought it was a good omen for Arizona when Faith Hill sang in the pre-game ceremonies, much like she did before Super Bowl 34 in Atlanta, when the Rams beat Tennessee, but as soon as Matt Millen picked the Cardinals, they were as dead as nails.

        8) The replay rule is mostly good, but I was rooting for Arizona and didn't think that Big Ben's rushing TD on the first drive should have been overturned. His knee obviously hit the ground? I think not, but Whisenhunt saved his team four points with the challenge.

        7) No way Dick Lebeau looks 71. He may be the first assistant coach inducted into Canton- he was also a terrific DB for the Lions.

        6) Arizona's safety with 2:58 left was first one in a Super Bowl in 18 years, when Bruce Smith sacked Jeff Hostetler for the Bills.

        5) It is staggering to think about the amount of money that changes hands on square pools and prop bets with every score. Pivotal plays like the Harrison INT swing millions of dollars around the country.

        4) I'm thinking Larry Fitzgerald has best hands since Connie Hawkins was palming basketballs in Phoenix for the Suns in the 70's.

        3) Naysayers should note that Kurt Warner now holds #'s 1-3 games in Super Bowl history, in terms of passing yardage, and he led drives that either tied game or put his team ahead in last 3:00 of all three of those games. Five of the last eight Super Bowls have been decided by four or less points. This game had to get huge TV ratings.

        2) Someone has to explain to me how the referee doesn't go under the hood to review the last play-- that wasn't worth a few extra minutes?

        1) You look back at how Ben Roethlisberger was drafted after Philip Rivers and Eli Manning, and you think, wow, Ben is better than both those guys, and it isn't very close. A tremendous quarterback.

                Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Memphis Grizzlies at Washington Wizards (-5.5, 192.5)

The Grizzlies (11-35) have dropped 20 of their last 22 overall, including a 115-98 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday.

Memphis led by 13 in the first half, but slowly allowed the Lakers to take control. It was outscored 60-37 in the second half and committed 23 turnovers for the game, leading to 39 Los Angeles points. Rudy Gay had 23 points and O.J. Mayo scored 21 on 8-of-12 shooting.

"They did a great job in the second half, no denying that," said Mayo, who was held to six points after halftime. "I felt like my touches were limited in the second half."

The losing streak is Memphis' longest since it dropped the final two games of the 2001-02 season and the first 13 of 2002-03. The blown lead on Saturday came after they had led Oklahoma City by 14 points only to lost by 12 in overtime on Wednesday.

The Grizzlies are 2-18 on the road, where they've lost eight straight.

Memphis and Washington split their two meetings last season, with each winning at home. Jamison has averaged 28.1 points in the last eight meetings.

                Picks: Over 192.5

Portland Trail Blazers at New Orleans Hornets (-3, 187)

New Orleans will look to avoid its first three-game losing streak since February 2008 on Monday. The Hornets have won two of three against the Blazers this season despite Paul averaging only 16.7 points in those contests.

Paul has averaged 12.6 points in five home games against Portland, all of which New Orleans has won. His 14.8 career scoring average against the Blazers is the second-lowest against any team he's faced. He's averaging 13.9 against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Portland, meanwhile, is looking to win its fifth straight Monday. The Blazers have cruised to wins in their last four games - three at home - winning by an average of 16.5 points and never trailing by more than five points in any of them.

Portland is coming off a 122-108 win over Utah on Saturday in which it led the entire way. Brandon Roy scored 30 points to lead six players in double figures, and Joel Przybilla added 14 points and 17 rebounds.

"I'm happy that we controlled the game from the tip. We were probably the more physical and active team," said Roy, who has scored 30 points seven times this season. "It felt good to beat them soundly. It didn't come down to the last 4 minutes. We played well the entire game."

Roy missed Portland's 92-77 home loss to the Hornets on Jan. 2 because of a strained right hamstring. He's averaged 23.0 points and eight assists in the other two meetings in which the teams split.

Portland has lost six straight road games against the Hornets.

                Pick: Portland +4

#2 Connecticut at #7 Louisville [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

UConn: The Huskies are expected to be the new #1 team in the country by the time this game tips off, but that isn't necessarily a good thing. There have been three different #1 teams in the last three weeks, and the last two lost in their very next games. In fact, Pitt was also #1 before leaving Louisville with its first loss back on January 17th. “You don’t want to be No. 1 for a day,” UConn head coach Jim Calhoun said. “It’s just a number that goes by quickly. But if there are 343 teams playing in the country and at some point in the season, especially 21 games into the season - it’s nice. No more. No less.”

UConn is 8-3-1 ATS in its last 12 Monday games.
The UNDER is 7-3 in UConn's last 10 games overall.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 67

Louisville (-3, O/U 136): The Cardinals believe they are at their best when challenged by elite competition, and that's exactly what they'll get when the Huskies come to town. UConn is a perfect 10-0 away from home this season and 4-2 all-time vs. Louisville. The Cardinals did not handle a 20-point halftime lead well against West Virginia on Saturday, settling for an eventual 69-63 victory. “We fall in love with ourselves too much,” Louisville head coach Rick Pitino said. “In the long run, it’s probably better we had a war down the stretch.”

Louisville is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
The OVER is 3-1 in Louisville's last 4 games overall.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 70

Kansas at Baylor [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

                        Kansas (-1, O/U 153):

Kansas is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 games overall.
The OVER is 3-1 in the last 4 meetings.

Key Injuries - C Cole Aldrich (nose) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 80 (Side Play of the Day)

                        Baylor:

St. Louis Blues at Detroit Red Wings (N/A)

Here’s something you don’t read very often: The Detroit Red Wings have lost five games in a row.

The struggling Red Wings are coming off a loss at the hands of Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. Ovechkin scored twice in the third period to hand the Wings to their fifth straight defeat Saturday afternoon.

Detroit's goaltenders are finally showing their true colors. Chris Osgood and Ty Conklin have combined to give up 23 goals in the past five outings.

"Any time you're not winning on a regular basis, there are things you've got to do better," head coach Mike Babcock told reporters. "All in all, from goaltending to playing better defense to penalty kills to more offence, we've got to do better."

On the other side of things, Blues goaltender Chris Mason is red hot with two shutouts in his last three games. The Blues have won three of four with victories over Philadelphia, Chicago and Boston.

The Blues are hot but the defending Stanley Cup Champions will not lose a sixth straight contest on home ice.

                              Pick: Detroit

Calgary Flames at Colorado Avalanche (+130, 5.5)

The Colorado Avalanche have lost seven of their last eight games. Their only win during this horrid stretch was a 6-2 triumph over the Calgary Flames. The Flames did start backup goalie Curtis McElhinney in that game but don’t expect them to make the same mistake twice.

The red-hot Mike Cammalleri didn’t score in Calgary’s 3-1 win against Nashville but does have eleven goals in his last eight games.

"Obviously, it's going in for me right now, and it feels pretty good when the puck's going in like that," Cammalleri told the media. "It definitely adds to the confidence level, and the stick feels pretty comfortable in your hands."

The Avs and Flames have met five times already this season with Calgary winning four of those contests.

                              Pick: Over 5.5
