Good Luck on day #32 of 2009!

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, and the NHL until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.
When there are a large number of games in the NCAAB, a separate thread will be posted.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, February 1

The Steelers and Cardinals will finally get down to business on Sunday when they meet in Tampa Bay for Super Bowl XLIII. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

After two weeks of hype and speculation there's not much left to cover for the Super Bowl XLIII matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals at Tampa's Raymond James Stadium on Sunday. The line is still sitting at Pittsburgh -7 at most books, with the total on the high side at 46.5 points. The Steelers are 2-0 against-the-spread so far in the playoffs, covering a pair of 6-point spreads against the Ravens and Chargers. The Cards are 3-0 against the number in the postseason, which includes winning outright as an underdog twice.

Friday's final injury report had Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward pegged as PROBABLE. Ward is the only player listed on Pittsburgh's release; quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is rumored to have sore ribs, but he doesn't appear on the injury report. The Cardinals have RB J.J. Arrington (knee), P Ben Graham (left groin), and DE Travis LaBoy (biceps) all listed as QUESTIONABLE heading into the game, while DE Antonio Smith (knee) is the team's lone PROBABLE entry.

Game time for Sunday is set for 6:00pm ET, but introductions and other procedural matters should push kickoff to sometime around 6:20pm ET. Coverage is provided by NBC this year, and the halftime show is headlined by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Prop bets abound at online sportsbooks, so there's plenty of research to do in the hours leading up to the game. That includes looking into which color Gatorade will be dumped on the victorious head coach in the fourth quarter, so call up your locker room sources.

    Other Notable Events

The NBA gets most of its schedule out of the way before the Super Bowl kicks off on Sunday, with Minnesota at Boston, Orlando at Toronto, and Cleveland at Detroit the afternoon matchups. Those three games all feature Eastern Conference division leaders. The league's night contest, though, won't detract from the NFL title game, as it's a matchup between the lowly Thunder and Kings.

    The Rest of the Schedule

Top-ranked Duke fell 70-68 to Wake Forest in their last contest, so they'll be looking to get back on track on Sunday afternoon when they host Virginia. Three other ranked college hoops teams are in action on Sunday, with Penn State at No. 9 Michigan State, Iowa at No. 19 Illinois, and Cincinnati at No. 21 Villanova.

Finally, the Bruins and Canadiens will continue their rivalry in Montreal on Sunday afternoon in one of just three NHL games on the ice. Ottawa and Washington will also play a matinee, while Nashville will travel out to Edmonton.

    A Peek at the Future

The NHL's Monday schedule has just three games, with the top matchup seeing Buffalo on the road in Anaheim . . . the Magic will host the Mavericks in NBA action on Monday, while the Lakers will be in New York and Portland will be on the road in New Orleans . . . No. 2 UConn will take on No. 7 Louisville in college hoops action on Monday, while No. 3 Pittsburgh gets a visit from Robert Morris.

          Tips and Trends
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Detroit Pistons [ABC | 2:30 PM ET]

Cavs (-4, O/U 180.5): Cleveland has lost in its last four trips to the Palace of Auburn Hills and hopes the return of center Zydrunas Ilgauskas will continue to give the team a boost. Ilgauskas totaled 20 points and 11 rebounds in his first game back from a broken ankle after missing 13 games as the Cavs knocked off the Clippers on Friday, 112-95. “Our offense always runs a lot smoother when (Ilgauskas is) out there because it leads to everyone getting touches because the paint is so wide open,” Cleveland star LeBron James said. “His ability to spread the offense and spread the floor helps us out a lot. When he’s not in there, it seems the paint is much more crowded.”

Cavs are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 road games.
The UNDER is 26-6 in the last 32 meetings.

Key Injuries - C Zydrunas Ilgauskas (ankle) has returned.
G Delonte West (wrist) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 93 (Side Play of the Day)

Pistons: Detroit will be looking to avoid losing four straight home games for the first time in eight years and prove it can beat an elite team. The Pistons sit 11 games behind the Cavs in the Central Division and are just 13-10 at home this season after going 129-35 at the Palace from 1994 through last season. They are coming off an 86-78 loss to Boston there on Friday with Allen Iverson scoring 19 points. Iverson has been held under 20 points in five straight games, and the Pistons are just 11-19 under that scenario. They are 11-3 when he scores 20 points or more.

Pistons are 0-8 ATS in their last 8 Sunday games.
The UNDER is 11-2 in Detroit's last 13 Sunday games.

          Key Injuries - NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: 87

            Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Timberlwolves at Boston Celtics (-13.5, 197.5)

After a brief slump, the Boston Celtics have gotten back on track with another lengthy winning streak. The Minnesota Timberwolves, meanwhile, have cooled off following their turnaround.

The Celtics (39-9) look for their 11th straight victory Sunday when they host the Timberwolves (16-29), who are trying to avoid a third consecutive loss.

The two teams started the season going opposite ways - the Celtics set an NBA record with a 27-2 start while the Timberwolves opened 4-23. In that time, Boston produced a franchise-record 19 straight victories, but stumbled after that, going 2-7 before launching their current win streak.

"We lost a sense of urgency during that stretch," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said.

Under new coach Kevin McHale, the Timberwolves rebounded with a 12-4 mark until their recent consecutive losses - the team's first losing streak since its 13-game skid from Nov. 29-Dec. 23.

During their streak, the Celtics have won seven by double digits and three by 20-plus points. Their recent games against Minnesota have been a little closer.

With the exception of a 95-78 Boston victory on Nov. 21, four of the last five meetings have been decided by single digits. Three of those games have been settled by one or two points and another - a 124-117 home win for the Celtics on March 4, 2007 - required double overtime.

            Pick: Minnesota -13.5

Cleveland Cavaliers at Detroit Pistons (+4.5, 180.5)

The Pistons no longer have a significant home-court advantage like they once did, though.

From 2004-05 through last season, Detroit had the league's third-best home record at 129-35. This season, the Pistons are 13-10 at the Palace, and have dropped five of their last six there.

Detroit suffered its third straight home defeat on Friday, an 86-78 setback to Boston. The Pistons, who have lost eight of their 11 games overall, have not lost four straight home contests since dropping eight in a row from Dec. 30, 2000-Feb. 2, 2001.

Detroit struggled on Friday because its top three frontcourt players - Rasheed Wallace, Antonio McDyess and Tayshaun Prince - were a combined 7-of-31 from the field.

Allen Iverson scored 19 points against the Celtics, and has been held under 20 in each of his last five games.

The Pistons are 11-3 when Iverson scores 20 or more points, and 11-19 when he doesn't. The 10-time All-Star had 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting in the win over the Cavs in November, and is averaging 29.7 points in his last 10 games versus them.

            Under: 180.5

Ottawa Senators at Washington Capitals (-240, 5.5)

Ottawa was trying for its third straight road victory on Friday night, but fell 1-0 to Columbus in the second stop of a three-game swing.

After averaging 3.2 goals in their previous six games, the Senators were held to a season low-tying 18 shots as they endured their fifth shutout. They're last in the NHL with 112 goals.

"You've just got to find a way in games like that to get that goal that you need," coach Craig Hartsburg told the Senators' official Web site.

Forward Daniel Alfredsson, one game shy of reaching 900 for his career, leads the Senators with 30 assists and is second with 42 points.

The Senators captain has a goal and five assists over his last nine contests, but was kept off the scoresheet in the latest matchup with Washington. He has 29 goals - tied for his most against any opponent - and 53 points in 46 lifetime meetings.

Jose Theodore is 1-4-1 with a 3.33 goals-against average in his last six matchups versus Ottawa. However, he's 11-3-0 with a 1.98 GAA in 14 home games for the Capitals.

Washington is 11-4-0 with a tie in 16 all-time contests played at home on Super Bowl Sunday.

                      Pick: Over 5.5

Boston Bruins at Montreal Canadiens (-120, 5.5)

After rallying late to beat one the league's weakest teams in their last game, the Montreal Canadiens now will try to avoid extending a losing streak against the NHL's best.

Montreal looks to snap a three-game skid against the Boston Bruins on Sunday when they meet at the Bell Centre, where the Canadiens have enjoyed a great deal of success in recent years against their Northeast Division rivals.

The Canadiens are 0-2-1 in their last three meetings with the Bruins (36-8-6), but both regulation losses came in Boston. Despite falling in a shootout on Nov. 22, Montreal is 12-1-1 at home against Boston going back to Oct. 18, 2005.

Guy Carbonneau's club needed some late heroics on Saturday to snap a season-high four-game losing streak. Christopher Higgins and Saku Koivu scored in the final 1:53 as the Canadiens defeated Los Angeles 4-3.

Higgins' sixth goal tied the score at 3 before Koivu scored his eighth on the power play with 22.3 seconds to play, ending the slide while sending Montreal (28-15-6) to its fourth straight home win.

"It's a start, but that's all it is," said All-Star goaltender Carey Price, who made 29 saves for his first win in four starts after returning from an ankle injury that sidelined him for almost three weeks. "It's a start, you know, we've got to keep moving from here."

Since coming back in relief of Jaroslav Halak on Jan. 20, Price has allowed 18 goals in five appearances. He's 3-0-1 with a 2.59 goals-against average in his career at home against Boston.

                      Pick: Boston +110
