    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, January 30

The Boston Celtics will be gunning for their 10th straight victory Friday night when they visit the Detroit Pistons. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The most scrutinized body part heading into Sunday's Super Bowl has been Hines Ward's knee. The Steelers wide receiver suffered a sprained MCL against the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game, and he missed practice to rest the injury on Wednesday. However, Ward practiced fully on Thursday afternoon and will start on Sunday night against the Cards - albeit with a brace on his bad knee.

    Other Notable Events

The Celtics ran their winning streak to nine games on Wednesday night with a 119-100 victory over Sacramento. Eddie House scored 28 points for Boston off the bench in that contest, while Rajon Rondo chipped in with 24 points and nine assists. Detroit knocked off Minnesota 98-89 in their last outing, but that was just their third victory in their past 10 games. Rasheed Wallace led the way with 25 points for the Pistons that day. Tipoff for the Friday matchup is set for 7:00pm ET.

Celtics/Pistons is just one of 11 matchups on the NBA schedule for Friday night. The Cavaliers will be looking for an easy win when they host the Clippers, while the Lakers will be on the road in Minnesota. Rounding out the slate: Milwaukee at Toronto, Washington at Philadelphia, Miami at Indiana, New Jersey at Atlanta, Charlotte at Denver, Oklahoma City at Utah, Golden State at New Orleans, and Chicago at Sacramento; the Kings' Wednesday defeat was their seventh straight.

    The Rest of the Schedule

On the ice, the Penguins will hit the road for a game against the Devils on Friday night. Pittsburgh scored five goals in the third period to get past the rival Rangers 6-2 at home on Wednesday night, with Sidney Crosby picking up a goal and three assists. Eight other teams are in action around the NHL on Friday, with Ottawa at Columbus, Philadelphia at Tampa Bay, Nashville at Calgary, and Minnesota at Edmonton; the Oilers were pasted 10-2 by the Sabres last time out.

Finally, there's just one ranked college hoops team in action on Friday night, as No. 13 Butler will host Valparaiso at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs pounded Wisconsin-Milwaukee 78-48 last time out to improve to 18-1 SU and 11-5-1 ATS on the season. The Crusaders are just 6-15 SU and 8-10 ATS through 21 games.

    News from the Wire

Key Clippers Marcus Camby (ankle) and Baron Davis (tailbone) both returned to action on Wednesday night . . . Warriors guard Jamal Crawford (hamstring) also got back on the court on Wednesday night, as did Rockets center Yao Ming (knee) . . . Pens forward Crosby sat out last week's All-Star Game with a sore knee, but showed no ill effects in his big night against the Rangers Wednesday.

    A Peek at the Future

There are a couple of ranked matchups on the college hoops schedule for Saturday, with No. 25 Georgetown vs. No. 8 Marquette at 2:00pm ET, and No. 23 Washington vs. No. 14 Arizona State at 5:30pm ET . . . the top NBA matchups on Saturday are Dallas at Miami, New Orleans at San Antonio, and Utah at Portland . . . the Red Wings are in Washington in NHL matinee action on Saturday (12:30pm ET), while the Blackhawks hit the road to take on the Sharks.

      Six-pack for Friday

-- St Mary's led by six at half at Gonzaga, but star G Mills injured his wrist, didn't play in second half, and Zags pulled away to win 69-62, handing Gaels their first WCC loss.

-- Clemson made 14-25 from arc, rallied from 53-44 halftime deficit and got a terrific road win, 86-82 at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

-- Washington State freshman Thompson had 28 points as Cougars upset Arizona State in Tempe, 65-55.

-- Lawrence Hill had turnaround jumper go halfway down and spin out at buzzer, as USC held off Stanford 70-69. Stanford seniors are 0-9 in their careers, in city of LA against Trojans and UCLA.

-- Tubby Smith's Gophers held Illinois to 36 points, routing Illini 59-36 in Minneapolis. Illinois shot 29%, took just seven foul shots.

Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

        13) usajobs.gov is a website that lists federal jobs that need to be filled; you'd be surprised how many there are. Only 12% of jobs in federal government are in Washington (these aren't postal jobs). You can search by job title or location, if you want.

        12) Meanwhile, the Postal Service may stop delivering mail on either Wednesday or Saturday, as they try and reduce their deficit. E-mails are seen as one cause of what could be a decline in revenue for USPS last year. One problem this causes is that dogs won't have anyone to bark at on Wednesdays anymore.

        11) Georgia fired Dennis Felton, making them second SEC team that fired its coach this week; two teams meet up Saturday, so at least one of the interim coaches will get his first win.

        10) None of this bodes well for Jeff Lebo at Auburn. Anytime they are building a new gym and the team struggles, heads will roll.

        9) Here is part of why the SEC is down this year: only six of top 30 scorers, five of top 30 rebounders, three of top 15 assist men are in their senior seasons. Awful lot of young players play lot of minutes.

        8) USC signed home/home football series with Minnesota; not sure if they'll be the team to open Gophers' new outdoor stadium, much like Texas opened Central Florida's new stadium two years ago.

        7) ESPN's Barry Melrose is dead-set against the NHL banning fights, and I'm not sure why. Hockey is a great game, they don't need goons who do nothing but fight. What other sport encourages fisticuffs?

        6) If I ran the A's and I was serious about winning, I sign Adam Dunn and bat the big fella leadoff; he gets on base an awful lot of the time.

        5) Jeff Jagodzinski, who apparently didn't enjoy working at Boston College very much, lands on his feet, getting hired by Buccaneers as the offensive coordinator.

        4) I can see Michael Vick being the Cowboys' backup QB next year. Who fits in with Dallas better than a guy getting out of prison?

        3) I've never been to baseball spring training, but I will someday.

        2) It still bothers me that Bernie Madoff isn't in jail; the guy bilked $50B from investors, and they let him post bail??? Horse hockey.

        1) I thought of this today: Wouldn't it be great if people who retired from successful business careers volunteered their time at local high schools, mentoring kids on education and career choices? A typical local high school might have only ten or so guidance counselors for 1,200-1,500 students. Kids aren't getting enough good advice. .

              Tips and Trends
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Celtics (-5, O/U 185.5): Boston is looking for its 10th straight victory and has reserve guard Eddie House to thank for a hot shooting streak. House has made 22-of-32 shots from 3-point range (69 percent) in the last four games, averaging 19 points per game. The Celtics have won those games by an average of 17 points, and a couple of House's teammates believe he should be participating in All-Star Game festivities. “He needs to be in the 3-point contest,” Boston forward Kevin Garnett said. “That’s what this press conference is about: Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett are here to say that we think Eddie House needs to be in the 3-point contest.”

Celtics are 7-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings at Detroit.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Boston's last 9 Friday games.

Key Injuries - F Brian Scalabrine (head) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 97 (Side Play of the Day)

Pistons: Detroit has not enjoyed much success against Boston since the Celtics acquired Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen before last season. The Pistons have dropped eight of 11 meetings, including four of the last five at home. They will be trying to win back-to-back games for only the second time since January 4th after beating Minnesota 98-89 on Wednesday. "Like I said, it’s determination," Detroit center Rasheed Wallace said. "We’re determined and we definitely have to put our foot on the gas coming into All-Star break and we’re just going to have to drive forward.”

Pistons are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 13-3 in the last 16 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Richard Hamilton (groin) is questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 89

Golden State Warriors at New Orleans Hornets [ESPN | 9:30 PM ET]

Warriors: Golden State was held below 100 points for the first time in 15 games on Wednesday in a 117-93 loss at Dallas. The Warriors own one of the league's top offenses with 107 points per game but also have the worst defense (111.8 ppg). They trailed the Mavs 69-47 at halftime and never recovered. “I think the biggest problem today was effort,” Golden State swingman Stephen Jackson said. “I just wished we would’ve gone down fighting. We didn’t do anything on defense to get them out of their comfort zone and they just made all their shots.”

Warriors are 7-19-1 ATS in their last 27 road games.
The UNDER is 4-1 in Golden State's last 5 games overall.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Hornets (NA): New Orleans got a huge boost from its bench in a 94-81 win over Denver on Wednesday. The Hornets' bench ranks just 27th in the NBA with 25.3 points per game but erupted for 42 against the Nuggets. Devin Brown led the reserves with 18, helping overcome the loss of David West (back) and Tyson Chandler (ankle) to injuries. “Sometimes there’s nights like that and we had to do other things,” New Orleans forward James Posey said. “Chris (Paul) was still creating for other guys. Peja (Stojakovic) and then Devin came in and played big for us as well. We worked a little harder on the defensive end and were able to get stops and rebounds and push the ball a little bit.”

Hornets are 23-9 ATS in their last 32 games vs. Pacific Division.
The UNDER is 9-2 in New Orleans' last 11 home games.

Key Injuries - F David West (back) is questionable.
G Morris Peterson (foot) is day-to-day.
C Tyson Chandler (ankle) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Nashville Predators at Calgary Flames (-200, 5.5)

Michael Cammalleri has been feeling right at home in Calgary's Pengrowth Saddledome lately.

Cammalleri looks to continue his scoring surge and help the Northwest Division-leading Flames win for the 10th time in 11 games at the Saddledome when they face the Nashville Predators on Friday.

Calgary (29-14-4) has an 11-point lead atop the Northwest, thanks in large part to an 18-5-3 home record. The Flames, third in the NHL with 96 goals at home, have scored at least five goals six times during their 9-1-0 stretch at the Saddledome.

Cammalleri has been a big part of the Flames' recent home success, with 12 goals in his last seven games in Calgary. He recorded a hat trick in Wednesday's 5-2 victory over Buffalo, the Flames' 11th in 14 contests.

The Calgary forward has scored eight times during a four-game goal streak, and has 11 goals and two assists during a seven-game point streak. Seventeen of his team-leading 25 goals have come at home, and the Flames are 13-3-1 overall when he scores.

"Obviously, it's going in for me right now and it feels pretty good when the puck's going in like that," said Cammalleri, who was acquired from Los Angeles last summer and can become an unrestricted free agent after the season. "It definitely adds to the confidence level, and the stick feels pretty comfortable in your hands."

Cammalleri has a goal and two assists in Calgary's three games against the Predators this season - all wins.

                          Pick: Over 5.5

Minnesota Wild at Edmonton Oilers (-130, 5)

Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom isn't who the Edmonton Oilers probably want to see after the worst home loss in franchise history.

The Oilers look to bounce back from an embarrassing defeat and earn their first win in 13 tries against Backstrom when they host Minnesota on Friday in a matchup of Northwest Division teams with identical records.

Edmonton (24-20-3) entered the All-Star break having won three straight and five of six, but that momentum came to a crashing halt Tuesday with an ugly 10-2 loss to Buffalo.

"It was a debacle of monumental proportions," coach Craig MacTavish said.

Dwayne Roloson allowed three goals on eight shots before he was replaced by rookie Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers midway through the first period. The Sabres had a 4-0 lead before Erik Cole put Edmonton on the board 13:23 into the second period.

The loss surpassed a 9-2 defeat to Chicago last month as the worst home loss in franchise history. The Oilers entered Tuesday having allowed 60 goals in 22 home games this season.

"We didn't think that this could happen to us again," defenseman Steve Staios said. "Especially the way that we were playing of late. Hopefully the experience we have from trying to shake it off last time is the way to do it because we started playing better and got ourselves into a playoff position. You can't sugarcoat how tough a night it was but we have to put this behind us quickly and move on."

Bouncing back won't be easy, however, especially with Backstrom in net. Backstrom made 20 saves in a 5-1 home victory over the Oilers on Jan. 15 and improved to 10-0 with a 1.58 goals-against average and three shutouts in 12 appearance against the Oilers.
                          Pick: Minnesota +120

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Utah Jazz (-8, 208)

Utah has lost four straight games and is just 4-6 straight up (SU) and 2-8 against the spread (ATS) in its last 10 overall.

Friday could be an embarrassing night for the Jazz. Utah hosts the vastly-improved Thunder.

Oklahoma City has won five of its last seven and is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 games overall.

Kevin Durant put on a clinic against Memphis Grizzlies Wednesday. Durant led all players with 35 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the victory. Even more impressive, Durant has put up more than 30 points in four of his last six starts including a 46-point effort last Friday against the Los Angeles Clippers.

“I just wanted to continue to be aggressive in that situation and hopefully shots would go down for me,” Durant told reporters following Wednesday’s OT victory over the Grizzlies. “I’m going to continue to be that way, and hopefully I'll win some games off of it.”

Oklahoma City hammered the Jazz 114-93 earlier this month and is 6-1 ATS in its last seven trips to Salt Lake City going back to Seattle SuperSonics.

The Jazz, meanwhile, are 0-6 ATS in their last six overall.

                            Pick: Thunder +8

Milwaukee Bucks at Toronto Raptors (N/A)

Good things happen when forward Chris Bosh and point guard Jose Calderon play together.

Since Calderon returned last Friday, Toronto has rattled off three straight and is 2-1 against the spread (ATS) in that period.

“We were looking for stretches of games like this during our stretch of loses,” Raptors reserve Joey Graham told reporters after Wednesday’s win over the New Jersey Nets. We needed these games to get us back on track, to get us back in the playoff run.”

Bosh and Calderon have combined for 122 points in their last three and Calderon has led the team in assists in each of those tilts.

The Bucks, meanwhile, are without shooting guard Michael Redd for the rest of the season with a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee. They are 4-6 SU and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 overall.

                            Pick: Raptors
