    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, January 27

The NHL returns from its annual All-Star Break on Tuesday night with 11 games on the schedule. Here's a look at all of the action in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

If you like the Steelers' chances of winning the Super Bowl on Sunday, you probably also like Ben Roethlisberger's chances of capturing the game's Most Valuable Player award. Big Ben is the favorite at many sportsbooks on that prop bet heading into the contest, with odds as low as 2/1. Arizona counterpart Kurt Warner has a Super Bowl pedigree as well, and he's second on that list right now.

Other popular MVP options from the Steelers include running back Willie Parker and wide receivers Santonio Holmes and Hines Ward, with Ward (knee) carrying more risk because of his QUESTIONABLE status. Safety Troy Polamalu is among the top Steelers candidates as well. Over on the Cards, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald is getting lots of MVP action this week, while fellow wideout Anquan Boldin isn't as popular. Running backs Edgerrin James and Tim Hightower round out Arizona's top five candidates to win the Super Bowl MVP.

    Other Notable Events

The big matchup on the ice on Tuesday sees Alexander Ovechkin and his Washington Capitals on the road against Tim Thomas' Boston Bruins. The Caps entered the break with a big lead in the Southeast Division standings, and they're 6-4-0 over their past 10 games. The Bruins have the most points in the Eastern Conference heading into the second half and they're 6-3-1 in their past 10 games.

The Atlantic-leading Devils are also in action on Tuesday, as they'll travel to Ottawa to take on the Senators. Also on the NHL's slate: Carolina at the Rangers, Philadelphia at Florida, Montreal at Tampa Bay, Toronto at Minnesota, Atlanta at Dallas, Anaheim at Phoenix, Buffalo at Edmonton, and San Jose at Colorado. As well, Detroit will play in Columbus, with Red Wings stars Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom both expected to sit out due to their suspensions.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The NBA has just five games on tap for Tuesday, including a big Western Conference matchup between the Spurs and Jazz in Utah. San Antonio fell 99-85 on the road against the Lakers in their last game, while Utah is coming off a 117-97 loss in Denver. The Nuggets play Tuesday as well, as they'll be in Memphis, while the Lakers will host Charlotte. The other two games on the slate have Sacramento on the road in Cleveland, and Orlando playing host to Indiana.

Finally, the two most notable college hoops matchups on Tuesday sees Texas playing in Waco against Baylor, and Wisconsin hosting Purdue. The Boilermakers got past Minnesota 70-62 in their last contest for their fourth straight victory. Also on the slate: Miami at NC State, Kentucky at Mississippi, Air Force at Wyoming, Marshall at Southern Miss, BYU at Utah, and Iowa State at Colorado, while Auburn has been handed a gimme contest vs. Texas Pan-Am.

    News from the Wire

The Heat had been rumored to be dealing Shawn Marion to the Raptors in exchange for Jermaine O'Neal, but more recent talk has them discussing a trade with the Kings for Brad Miller and Kenny Thomas . . . Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko is still hobbled by his ankle injury and isn't expected to play against the Spurs on Tuesday . . . Red Sox first baseman Sean Casey has retired, while catcher Jason Varitek is unsigned but expected to return to the team this season.

    A Peek at the Future

Wednesday's NBA schedule includes Sacramento at Boston, Denver at New Orleans, and Philadelphia at Houston, while Charlotte will continue their western swing in Portland . . . the Rangers and Penguins will meet in a big Atlantic Division clash in Pittsburgh in Wednesday NHL action, while the Blackhawks start the second half in Anaheim . . . Duke and Wake Forest will renew their intra-conference rivalry on Wednesday night with a huge matchup in Winston-Salem.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Timberwolves are 10-2 this month, best record in the NBA.

-- Oklahoma City is also much-improved, 7-6 in last 13 games.

-- Marquette had only three turnovers in handing Notre Dame its second consecutive home loss after 45 consecutive home wins.

-- Iona is just 5-5 in MAAC, but only one of their five losses was by more than two points, so they're a conference tourney sleeper.

-- Looks like Dan Reeves is going to sign on as a consultant with the Cowboys-- he should really love hanging around with TO.

-- Temperatures on playing surface in Melbourne reached a hideous 140 degrees Tuesday at the Australian Open- unsure why the roof wasn't closed. It was 105 degrees air temp Tuesday, and is going to be over 100 degrees the rest of the week, not ideal conditions.

San Antonio Spurs at Utah Jazz [9 PM ET]

Spurs: San Antonio has gone 12-7 on the road this season but just started a tough stretch of playing 11 of 12 away from home with a 99-85 loss to the Lakers on Sunday. The Spurs visit Phoenix on Thursday after this game before returning home against New Orleans on Saturday, which is followed by an eight-game road trip that doesn't end until February 21st. Needless to say, they face a difficult stretch and must get better production from reserves Roger Mason and George Hill, who totaled a combined nine points against LA but scored 52 between them in the last meeting with Utah.

Spurs are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
The OVER is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 93

Jazz (-2.5, O/U 193): Utah will try to avoid losing four straight for the first time this season and beat San Antonio at home for the fifth time in a row during the regular season. The Jazz have lost just one of their last eight home games, but that took place on Saturday, as the Cavs left Salt Lake City with a 102-97 victory. One player who will need to step up for Utah is center Mehmet Okur, who is averaging just eight points on 20.6 percent shooting (7-of-34) during the team's three-game losing streak.

Home team is 17-4 ATS in the last 21 meetings.
The OVER is 8-2 in Utah's last 10 games vs. Western Conference.

Key Injuries - F Andrei Kirilenko (ankle) is OUT.
F Carlos Boozer (quad) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 100 (Side Play of the Day)

Kentucky at Mississippi [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Kentucky (-8.5, O/U 142): The Wildcats look to have major matchup advantages both inside with Patrick Patterson and outside with Jodie Meeks, who scored a game-high 27 points in a 61-51 win at Alabama on Saturday. Meeks has scored 21 points or more in the last seven games - averaging 29.4 ppg - and the Wildcats have gone 6-1 ATS during that stretch. They also will have forward Ramon Harris on the bench after he fainted during halftime against the Crimson Tide. “It is a scary situation,” Kentucky head coach Billy Gillispie said. “We have great doctors and they have cleared him to play for a reason.”

Kentucky is 6-3 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
The UNDER is 4-1 Kentucky's last 5 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Ramon Harris (head) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 73 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Mississippi: The Rebels are struggling with their shooting, which isn't surprising considering they are playing without three of their top guards - all out for the season with injuries. Now yet another guard Terrico White (9.3 points per game) is hurting, as he is questionable with a knee injury. That lack of depth was tested in the second half of an 82-71 loss at South Carolina on Saturday, with Ole Miss shooting only 33.3 percent after the break. “I don’t think you can question our hard work,” Rebels freshman forward Murphy Holloway said. “But we’ve got to figure out a way to make some shots.”

Ole Miss is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 Tuesday games.
The UNDER is 4-0-1 in the last 5 meetings.

Key Injuries - PG Chris Warren (knee) is OUT.
G Terrico White (knee) is questionable.

#17 Purdue at Wisconsin [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Purdue: The Boilermakers will be try to extend their four-game winning streak and move into a second-place tie with Illinois in the Big Ten. They are 3-1 ATS during that stretch and have rebounded nicely from a two-game skid against Illinois and Penn State. “(Those losses) kind of opened our eyes,” Purdue forward JaJuan Johnson said. “It gave us the sense of urgency that we really needed. I think we are just really focused right now.” Johnson has averaged 15.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.5 blocks during the team's winning streak.

Purdue is 12-5-1 ATS in its last 18 road games.
The OVER is 5-1 in Purdue's last 6 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Robbie Hummel (back) is probable.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 61

Wisconsin (-1, O/U 123): The Badgers have not lost five straight games in more than a decade and will try to end their skid against the team that started it back on January 11th. Wisconsin lost at Purdue 65-52 in that game and have dropped three more since then, including two games the team led at halftime and ended up losing in overtime. The Badgers are coming off a 64-57 loss at Illinois on Saturday and have not lost five in a row since February 14th, 1998. They had beaten the Boilermakers eight straight times in Madison before losing last year.

Home team is 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
The UNDER is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.

                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montréal Canadiens at Tampa Bay Lightning (+130, 5.5)

The two most popular players from the All-Star weekend, Vincent Lecavalier and Alexei Kovalev, face off in a real hockey game; one where defensemen don’t stand around looking dumfounded and goalies don’t have to conduct interviews between the pipes.

Amid rumors of a possible trade to Montréal, Lecavalier was the early-weekend favorite. Hundreds of fans showed up at Trudeau International Airport to welcome him back to his hometown.

But Lecavalier didn’t live up to expectations, finishing the game scoreless and failing to get the puck past Roberto Luongo during the shootout.

Kovalev, on the other hand, was undoubtedly the game hero, scoring the first shootout goal for the East and winning game MVP.

“You can’t ask for a better package than this,” Kovalev told reporters. “Get voted in the All-Star game by fans, starting lineup, being the captain, get MVP. This is something to remember for the rest of your life.”

Look for Kovalev and the Habs to ride the high from All-Star weekend and pickup a victory over the lowly Lightning.

                            Pick: Canadiens

Detroit Red Wings at Columbus Blue Jackets (+140, 5.5)

Detroit was the only team in the league not represented at the All-Star game. The defending Stanley Cup champions weren’t snubbed; their two All-Star nominees Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk decided not to make the trip to Montréal citing injuries as the reason.

The NHL has ruled that both players will have to sit out Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jackets. Commissioner Gary Bettman decided to enforce this rule because he felt that too many players were skipping the All-Star exhibition and not fulfilling their obligations to the fans.

Lidstrom and Datsyuk could have avoided suspensions had they participated in all non-ice activities. Sidney Crosby, who has been sidelined with a knee injury, did just that over the weekend and will not have to miss the Penguins’ next regular season game.

The Blue Jackets are fighting for their first playoff birth in franchise history and with Rick Nash back in the lineup, they have a legitimate chance of making it happen. Prior to the All-Star break, Columbus had won four of its last seven games.

                            Pick: Blue Jackets

                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Utah Jazz (-2, 193)

Despite a loss to the league-leading Los Angeles Lakers Sunday, the Spurs are one of the league’s hottest clubs.

The Spurs are 7-3 in their last 10 overall and are 5-2 straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) in their last seven road contests.

Tim Duncan has been carrying the offensive load recently. He has seven double-doubles in his last 10 and is putting up more than 22 points a night during the stretch.

But even with Duncan playing so well, the Spurs would be nowhere without their defense and nobody believes that more than head coach Greg Popovich.

“It’s [defense] got to be our focus because we’re going nowhere without defense,” Popovich told reporters.

San Antonio has held three of its last five road opponents to 90 points or less. It is ranked sixth overall in opponent scoring (93.6 PPG).
The Jazz, meanwhile, have lost five of their last seven and are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 overall.

Sacramento Kings at Cleveland Cavaliers (-14.5, 203)

The Kings have a tough match-up Tuesday.

                              His name is LeBron James.

King James has led the Cavs to a 20-0 SU and 16-4 ATS mark at Quicken Loans Arena.

“We want to continue to protect our home court and we want to continue to get better,” James told USA Today. "We don't want to take a step back because we got a big picture and a big goal. You don't want to waste a game. We got really better tonight."

James has put up at least 27 points in five of his last seven home contests.

The Cavaliers are eager to get back on their own court after playing seven of their last 10 games on the road. They posted a 7-3 mark in that period.

Sacramento, meanwhile, is 3-20 on the road. It is 1-4 ATS in its last five overall.

                              Pick: Cavaliers
