    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, January 26

A Southeast Division clash between the Hawks and the Heat highlights the Monday schedule. Here's a look at all the leagues in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The official Super Bowl injury reports released last week had Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin listed as PROBABLE with his sore hamstring, while teammates RB J.J. Arrington (knee), P Ben Graham (left groin), DE Travis LaBoy (biceps), and DE Antonio Smith (knee) were all QUESTIONABLE. The Steelers listed both LB Patrick Bailey (hamstring) and WR Hines Ward (knee) as QUESTIONABLE, with C Justin Hartwig (knee), RB Mewelde Moore (ankle), T Max Starks (knee), QB Ben Roethlisberger (back), and LB Lawrence Timmons (illness) PROBABLE.

    Other Notable Events

The Heat have rebounded this season to sit at 23-19 straight-up in the Southeast Division standings, but they haven't made cash for their supporters at just 20-21-1 against-the-spread. Dwyane Wade and company upset Orlando 103-97 in their last game, and they'll be looking to knock off another division rival on Monday when they host Atlanta. Wade picked up 27 points and six assists in that victory.

There are a half-dozen other games on the NBA schedule for Monday, including the 21-21 Sixers looking to move over the .500 mark when they take on the Hornets in New Orleans. Rounding out the slate: Phoenix at Washington, Houston at New York, Minnesota at Milwaukee, and New Jersey at Oklahoma City, while Greg Oden's Trail Blazers will look for a road win against the Clippers.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The big college hoops matchup on Monday has Marquette on the road in Notre Dame. The Golden Eagles (17-2 SU, 7-6-1 ATS) are on a nine-game winning streak, knocking off DePaul 79-70 in their last outing. The Fighting Irish (12-6 SU, 5-8 ATS) fell 69-61 to Connecticut in their last contest, extending their skid to three games. Notre Dame's last win came against Seton Hall back on January 10.

The top team in action on Monday, though, is Oklahoma, which sits at 19-1 SU and 9-6 ATS this season. The Sooners blasted Baylor 95-76 last time out, and they'll be looking to do the same to rival Oklahoma State on Monday night. The Cowboys (13-5 SU, 6-5-1 ATS) beat the Cornhuskers 76-74 in their last contest.

    News from the Wire

Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk and defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom are both expected to be suspended for their team's game on Tuesday night because they skipped Sunday's All-Star festivities . . . Bucks guard Michael Redd will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered Saturday. . . Former Brewers ace starter Ben Sheets is still on the free agent market as spring training approaches.

    A Peek at the Future

Tuesday night's big NBA matchup has San Antonio in Utah, while the Lakers host Charlotte and the Cavaliers get a visit from Sacramento . . . Texas will be in Baylor in college hoops action on Tuesday, while Wisconsin hosts Purdue . . . Alexander Ovechkin and his Capitals will take to the ice in Boston against the Bruins Tuesday, while the Avs start the second half at home against the Sharks.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- When the Packers won Super Bowl I, they took home $15,000 a man, $7,500 a man more than the Kansas City Chiefs did.

-- This year, winning team brings home $78,000 a man, losing side just $40,000. For the marginal players, thats a lot of money.

-- Singer Huey Lewis got perfect 800 on the Math part of his SAT test, so he has to rate as one of the smarter musicians.

-- Saints' QB Drew Brees once beat tennis pro Andy Roddick in a junior tennis match.

-- Former Rams' coach Scott Linehan chose offensive coordinator’s job with Lions over the 49ers'; the teams play next year, so that'll be little more interesting than your normal regular season game.

-- Steelers have had three head coaches since 1969; Cardinals have had fourteen.

Monday's List of 13: Random thoughts after a slow weekend

        13) Third-string QB Brian St Pierre is simulating Ben Roethlisberger in practice for the Cardinals, which is easy for him, since he was the Steelers' third-string QB for three years before going to Arizona with coach Whisenhunt. Will it help the Redbirds? It can't hurt.

        12) The PGA Tour is in Phoenix next week; traditionally, the tourney ends right before the Super Bowl starts, but with Cardinals playing in the Super Bowl for first time, what will the crowd be like? Will they leave early, or just drink more at the golf course?

        11) Since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Steelers have the second-best record in AFC; the Cardinals have second-worst record in NFC.

        10) Want to win a bet? Max McGee scored the first Super Bowl TD.

        9) Only 61,946 people went to the first Super Bowl, which was in the very large Los Angeles Coliseum; six years later, the next time in LA, the game drew 90,182 people..

        8) The highest best-attended Super Bowls were all in the Rose Bowl, with the Rams-Steelers Super Bowl (103,985) having the most fans.

        7) Before you rip Anquan Boldin for being a typically jerky WR, it is important to remember he is playing with metal plates in his face, as a result of the broken cheekbone he suffered against the Jets Sept. 28. I'll repeat; he plays football with metal plates in his face.

By the way, the Cardinals' owner is Bill Bidwill, not Bidwell; I just read an article on nfl.com that misspelled the guy's name, and it has been misspelled about 1,000 times this season. No one cared when the Cardinals sucked, but they're in the Super Bowl. Spell it right.

        6) The NHL All-Star Game is so weird, it ended 12-11, and yet, the two announcers thought that goalie Tim Thomas might win MVP of the game. How was this game not on NBC, by the way? NHL needs exposure and Lord knows NBC needed quality programming Sunday. It is senseless for league's showcase of stars to be hidden on Versus.

        5) Friends of mine watch Rock of Love on VH1; why does the star of the show wear mascara on his eyes? Is there an answer to this?

        4) New name to remember; Tiffany Cherry, who is an Australian and a very pretty one on ESPN's coverage of the Australian Open; it says on her Wikopedia page that she was ounce sideline reported for the Australian Rules Football telecasts on Australian TV. Hopefully, the powers-that-be at ESPN will give her a more prominent role.

        3) All of which reminds me that in the early days of ESPN, they had Australian Football games on, and they were great fun to watch. With as many stations as ESPN has, they'd be wise to bring footie back.

        2) Watching Jim Boeheim coach against Rick Pitino is like going to a poker tournament and watching some amateur go up against the pros, and the amateur is trying to bluff the pro. Um, not quite. Mismatch of the highest order.

        1) The Big East may have too many teams, and is too self-absorbed, but every one of their games finds its way onto my TV, which is a good thing. How are Cincinnati, DePaul, Notre Dame and Marquette in an eastern league? Geography is not the league's strong suit.

Atlanta Hawks at Miami Heat [7:30 PM ET]

Hawks: Atlanta saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday with a 104-99 home loss to Phoenix. The Hawks shot less than 42 percent from the field and saw leading scorer Joe Johnson make only 5-of-20 shots from the field, including 1-of-6 from 3 point range. In fact, Johnson and Mike Bibby made just two 3-pointers and four free throws between them. "Every loss is tough, but it's like we are going to go and hide," Atlanta head coach Mike Woodson said. "We are pretty good at home, so we will be OK. This is basketball. We are trying to secure that fourth seed in the playoffs, and tomorrow we have to go to Miami and get it back."

Hawks are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 road games.
The OVER is 10-4 in Atlanta's last 14 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Acie Law (thigh) is questionable.
F Al Horford (knee) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 98 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Heat (-3.5, O/U 193.5): Miami will try to win consecutive games for only the second time in 2009 following a 103-97 win over Orlando on Saturday. The Heat continue a four-game homestand and have split the first two games so far against playoff-caliber opponents. The Hawks are next in line and will be another tough opponent, currently sitting in the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference. Miami is just 2.5 games behind them and will look to avoid losing for the fifth time in six meetings.

Heat are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
The OVER is 7-2 in Miami's last 9 home games.

Key Injuries - F Shawn Marion (groin) is day-to-day.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 102

#10 Marquette at #19 Notre Dame [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Marquette: The Golden Eagles bring a nine-game winning streak to South Bend and have won eight of the last 11 meetings with Notre Dame. Last season, Marquette averaged 88 points in three meetings with the Irish and shot nearly 45 percent from 3-point range (33-of-74). The Golden Eagles have also limited opponents to just 65.6 points per game during their winning streak. “We don’t have to temper our excitement, we just have continue to work hard,” Marquette head coach Buzz Williams said. “It’s a big game. It’s Notre Dame. It’s Marquette. We will be ready to play.”

Golden Eagles are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 road games.
The OVER is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 77

Notre Dame (-2.5, O/U 155.5): The Fighting Irish will be looking to get back on track after seeing their 45-game home winning streak end on Saturday with a 69-61 loss to Connecticut. This despite another impressive performance from reigning Big East Player of the Year Luke Harangody, who totaled 24 points and 15 rebounds for his eighth straight double-double. Unfortunately for him, Notre Dame's other four starters scored just 22 points between them on 8-for-39 shooting (21 percent). “(Three) losses in a row in the Big East, that’s what everyone’s focusing on right now in this locker room,” said Irish senior guard Kyle McAlarney, who sank three 3-pointers but missed his other 12 shots from the field. “We need to win.”

Notre Dame is 0-4 ATS in its last 4 games overall.
The OVER is 8-3 in Notre Dame's last 11 Monday games.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 79

#5 Oklahoma at Oklahoma State [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Oklahoma (-2.5, O/U 152.5): Sooners forward Blake Griffin leads the nation with 16 double-doubles and got his latest in a 95-76 rout of Baylor on Saturday. The 6-foot-10 Griffin totaled 20 points and 17 rebounds and owns the Big 12 record for games of at least 20 points and 15 rebounds with nine. He rolled his left ankle late in the first half against the Bears but said he will be ready for the latest game in the "Bedlam Series" against Oklahoma State. The Sooners have won five of the last six meetings.

Oklahoma is 3-7-1 ATS in its last 11 Monday games.
The UNDER is 9-2-1 in Oklahoma's last 12 road games.

Key Injuries - F Blake Griffin (ankle) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 80 (Side Play of the Day)

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys will likely have a lot of trouble matching up with Griffin since the tallest member of their rotation is just 6-8 after 6-11 center Ibrahima Thomas decided to transfer just seven games into the season. Oklahoma State head coach Travis Ford has played 6-11 Scott Warner a total of five minutes in four games, so Malcoln Kirkland will need to step up. Ford usually likes to play three and four guards in the same lineup but may have to switch gears in order to deal with Griffin.

Oklahoma State is 9-3-1 ATS in its last 13 games vs.Big 12.
The UNDER is 16-6 in Oklahoma State's last 22 Monday games.

Key Injuries - C Ibrahima Thomas (transferred) is OUT.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 72

                        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma Sooners at Oklahoma state Cowboys (+2.5)

Oklahoma big man Blake Griffin will create matchup problems for most teams. Oklahoma State, though, seems particularly vulnerable.

Griffin, who has been dominant in the paint for the sixth-ranked Sooners, looks to take advantage of the undersized Cowboys as the Big 12 rivals renew the "Bedlam Series" on Monday night.

Griffin, a preseason All-American, is averaging 22.2 points, 13.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks while shooting 62.2 percent. He leads Division I with 16 double-doubles, and has already broken a Big 12 record with nine games of at least 20 points and 15 rebounds in a single season.

Oklahoma (19-1, 5-0) got 20 points and 17 rebounds from Griffin in a 95-76 win over Baylor on Saturday.

The Sooners, though, received a scare in the final minute of the first half, when Griffin collided with Baylor guard Curtis Jerrells while driving to the basket. Griffin remained on the ground for a few moments, clutching his left ankle, then limped off the court only to return for the final seconds of the half.

Griffin said he rolled his ankle while stepping on someone's foot but would be fine.

The 6-foot-10, 250-pound sophomore dominates down low, and the Cowboys (13-5, 2-2) don't seem to have anybody who can stop him. After 6-foot-11 Ibrahima Thomas, who averaged 8.3 points and 3.9 rebounds, transferred to Cincinnati seven games into the season, first-year coach Travis Ford has usually started three and sometimes four guards, and the tallest member in his rotation is 6-8 forward Malcoln Kirkland.

                        Pick: Oklahoma -2.5

Marquette Golden Eagles at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-2.5)

For a Notre Dame team seeking to end its longest losing slide in almost three years, a matchup with surging Marquette might not be the best solution.

Looking to bounce back from their first home defeat since 2006, the 19th-ranked Irish have the tough task of ending the 11th-ranked Golden Eagles' season-high nine-game winning streak.

Notre Dame has lost eight of the last 11 games between the teams and struggled last season against the guard-oriented Golden Eagles, who averaged 88.0 points while shooting 44.6 percent (33-for-74) from 3-point range in three games. The teams each won on their home court before then-No. 25 Marquette upset 14th-ranked Notre Dame 89-79 in the Big East tournament quarterfinals.

Regrouping certainly won't be easy for Notre Dame against a Marquette team coming off a 79-70 win over DePaul Saturday. The nine-game winning streak is the Golden Eagles' longest run since reeling off 10 in a row during their 2003 Final Four season.

While Marquette is enjoying its success, first-year coach Buzz Williams expects his team to focus on this contest.

"We don't have to temper our excitement, we just have continue to work hard," Williams said. "It's a big game. It's Notre Dame. It's Marquette. We will be ready to play."

Jerel McNeal had 21 points and six steals, Wesley Matthews scored 20 points and Lazar Hayward added 16 points and 17 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, who lead the Big East in scoring at 81.5 points per game and are facing a Notre Dame team 14th in the conference in scoring defense at 70.1 per game allowed.

                        Pick: Marquette +2.5

New Jersey Nets at Oklahoma City Thunder (-2.5, 202)

The New Jersey Nets won't be caught with their shorts down against the Oklahoma City Thunder this time around.

The Nets nearly let the lowly Thunder walk out off the IZOD Center with a win January 12. Oklahoma City got the game into overtime and while it didn't get the victory, it did cover as a 7-point road underdog.

New Jersey followed that close contest with five straight loss but snapped its skid with a 99-88 victory in Memphis Saturday. The Nets held off late pushes from the Grizzlies and got their best effort on defense this month.

"When we had a big lead, we could have pushed a little bit further, but we let them get back in the game," Devin Harris told reporters. "We took care of business in the fourth like we needed to."

New Jersey is taking care of the basketball during its current road swing. It set a franchise low with just five turnovers against San Antonio and coughed the ball up only seven times Saturday. In the loss to the Thunder, the Nets made 14 costly turnovers.

                          Pick: New Jersey

Philadelphia 76ers at New Orleans Hornets (N/A)

Injuries caught up with the New Orleans Hornets Friday. The Bugs lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves with three key members of the frontcourt watching from the sideline.

David West, Tyson Chandler and Hilton Armstrong are all dealing with ailments, leaving T-Wolves big man Al Jefferson all along in the paint for 24 points and 14 rebounds. Minnesota pounded 52 points in the paint against the NBA's best interior defense and out rebounded New Orleans 42-26.

"It showed we missed our two big guys," Hornets coach Byron Scott told the media after the game. "They just killed us on the boards. They were much more physical than we were."

Chandler is out for at least four weeks with a sprained ankle while Armstrong (knee) and West (back) are both listed as day-to-day heading into Monday's tilt with another elite post player.
