    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, January 25

It's East vs. West in Montreal on Sunday night as the NHL stages its annual All-Star competition. Here's a look at all of the action in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Super Bowl prop bets are already out in full force. If you're a fan of ageless wonder Kurt Warner you can wager on how many yards the Arizona QB will pass for in the contest; the OVER/UNDER line is at 225.5 at some books. For Ben Roethlisberger that mark is lower, at 215.5 yards. As well, the Yes side is the -130 favorite on the prop bet 'Will Roethlisberger throw at least one interception', while for Warner both Yes and No are pegged at EVEN odds on that line. Rather wager on all-world Cards receiver Larry Fitzgerald? The OVER/UNDER on his receiving yards for the Super Bowl is listed at 90.5 versus the tough Steelers D.

    Other Notable Events

The Eastern Conference has been pegged as the -145 favorite at 'home' in Montreal for the National Hockey League's All-Star Game on Sunday (puck drop is 6:00pm ET), but that squad will have to make due without one of their top guns as Penguins forward Sidney Crosby will skip the game because of a sore knee.

Of course, the Western Conference will be missing two of its best players as well, as Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk and defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom will sit out due to nagging ailments. Oddsmakers still expect a lot of offense in the game, however, as the total for the night is sitting very high at the books at 16.5.

Voted as starters to the Western Conference team this year were forwards Patrick Kane, Ryan Getzlaf, and Jonathan Toews, along with defensemen Brian Campbell and Scott Niedermayer, and goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere. The fans elected Crosby, teammate Evgeni Malkin, and Alexei Kovalev as the starting forwards for the Eastern Conference roster, with Andrei Markov and Mike Komisarek the top vote-getters on defense, and Carey Price between the pipes.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are plenty of stars in action around the NBA on Sunday as well, but they'll be scattered around a bunch of different venues. Marquee matinees will take place in Boston and Los Angeles, with the Celtics hosting the Mavericks and the Lakers getting a visit from the Spurs. San Antonio slipped past Los Angeles in their last matchup, a 112-111 Spurs home win as 3-point favorites on January 14.

Also on the NBA's Sunday schedule: Phoenix at Atlanta, Sacramento at Toronto, Houston at Detroit, Charlotte at Indiana, Chicago at Minnesota, and the Clippers at Golden State. As well, the Jazz will be right back in action on the road against the Nuggets; Utah had to face LeBron James and the Cavaliers Saturday night.

Finally, Big East rivals Louisville and Syracuse will meet at the Carrier Dome on Sunday afternoon; the No. 8 Orangemen fell 78-60 to Pittsburgh in their last game, while the No. 9 Cardinals beat Rutgers 78-59 last time out. No. 4 Pittsburgh takes on West Virginia on Sunday, while No. 7 Michigan State plays Ohio State, and No. 10 Clemson hosts Georgia Tech. As well, No. 12 Georgetown will try to snap a two-game skid when they head out to Seton Hall.

    A Peek at the Future

Monday night has seven NBA games on the schedule, including Atlanta at Miami, Philadelphia at New Orleans, and Houston at New York . . . Marquette will take on Notre Dame in South Bend in college hoops action on Monday, while Oklahoma State will host Oklahoma . . . the NHL resumes its regular schedule on Tuesday night with 11 games, including Washington on the road against Boston.

National Hockey League – All-Star Game Notes

      NHL

      Sunday, January 25

NHL ALL-STAR GAME (TV - VERSUS) 6:05 PM ET
      Bell Centre - Montreal, Canada

      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: NHL All-Star game
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      East (-140) vs. West (+130)

      MISSING STARS

For the second year in a row one of the game’s brightest stars will miss the NHL All-Star game. Sidney Crosby will be sidelined with a knee injury. Last year Crosby missed the exhibition with a high ankle sprain. Martin St. Louis will take his place in the line up.

Not a single member of the defending Stanley Cup Champions will take part in the All-Star Game. Niklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk were both named to the Western Conference team but opted to skip the event. Detroit will be the only team not represented in the showcase.

Star players have skipped the All-Star game too many times in recent years and the NHL has finally decided to take action with one-game suspensions.

''We've all got obligations to the fans, the rights holders - this game is being televised around the world,'' said Vice-President Colin Campbell.

Lidstrom and Datsyuk will have to sit out a Red Wings game next week as punishment for skipping the All-Star festivities. In order to avoid a one-game suspension Sidney Crosby will take part in off-ice events.

      HOMETOWN HABS A PLENTY

The Montreal Canadiens will be well represented in their home barn with four players voted in as starters. Carey Price will start in goal for the East while Alex Kovalev will captain the team.

“It's wonderful to know that your fans respect your skill and the way you play. They see how much hard work you put in to make your team better,” said Kovalev.

Andre Markov and Mike Komisarek will patrol the blue line.

      RUMORS SWIRLING

The Vincent Lecavalier to Montreal rumors might steal the spotlight this weekend. Hundreds of fans greeted Lecavalier at the Montreal airport.

"I've always loved the Montreal Canadiens. It's a great organization, it's a great town. My family's from here, I've got a lot of friends here,” Lecavalier said to well over 50 members of the media. Look for Vinny to have a big game in his hometown.

      WHAT ARE THE ODDS?

The over-under on the All-Star game has been set at 16.5. In the last 10 years the two teams have combined for more than 16 goals only twice. The somewhat low scoring All-Star games have nothing to do with a lack of skill from the skaters; the goalies are just too good. Roberto Luongo, J.S. Giguere and Nicklas Backstrom will backstop the West. Carey Price, Tim Thomas and Henrik Lundqvist represent the East. Once again you have to think goalies have a good shot at keeping things under 17.

      BEASTS OF THE EAST

The Eastern Conference comes into the game as the defending champs. The East also holds home ice advantage and has seven 20 goals scorers in the line up. Patrick Marleau, Datsyuk’s replacement, is the only 20 goal weapon for the Western Conference. The East may also have an advantage on the backend with shutdown man extraordinaire Mike Komisarek making his All-Star debut. Komisarek only has five points this season but will most likely lead the game in unexpected body checks.

      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Betting the NHL All-Star Weekend
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NHL reaches the unofficial midway point of its season this weekend with All-Star festivities taking place in Montreal.

The Canadiens will be well represented on their home ice in Sunday’s game, as Montreal fans stuffed the ballot box to vote in four Canadiens as starters. Those four include forward Alexei Kovalev, defensemen Andrei Markov and Mike Komisarek, and netminder Carey Price, who made his first start in three weeks for Montreal on Wednesday. Rounding out the starting lineup for the East are Pittsburgh forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

The Western Conference squad’s starting lineup is loaded with Blackhawks and Ducks. Voted in for Chicago were forwards Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews and defenseman Brian Campbell. The rest of the starters are filled out by Anaheim, with forward Ryan Getzlaf, defenseman Scott Niedermayer, and goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

In last year’s All-Star Game in Atlanta the East defeated the West 8-7. Since the East versus West format was brought back in 2003 the two conferences have each won twice.

Before the game on Sunday the All-Star festivities get underway on Saturday night with the SuperSkills competition and the YoungStars game.

This year’s SuperSkills will once again crown the All-Star with the hardest shot, the fastest skater, and the best breakaway artist in the second annual Breakaway Challenge.

There are six heavyweights taking part in this year’s hardest shot competition, including reigning champion Zdeno Chara. Last year Chara won with a blistering shot that registered 103.2 mph on the radar gun. Challenging Chara for the title this season will be Sheldon Souray, Vincent Lecavalier, Mike Komisarek, Shea Weber, and Mark Streit.

The fastest skater competition returns to it roots this season after an uninspired change last season. In last year’s competition the skaters held sprints from the goal-line to the blueline. That’s been scrapped this year and the old format of one full lap around the ice is back. Shawn Horcoff won’t be back to defend his win from a year ago, as this year’s fastest skater lineup includes Jeff Carter, Brian Campbell, Zach Parise, and Jay Bouwmeester.

Despite debuting to mixed reviews last season the Breakaway Challenge is in the SuperSkills lineup again this year. Alexander Ovechkin won last year’s inaugural event despite a swing and a miss on his baseball swing breakaway. Ovechkin will look to defend his title on Saturday night against Ryan Getzlaf, Alexei Kovalev, Sidney Crosby, and Patrick Kane.

      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Turn on the red light: NHL All-Star game odds
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While we await Super Bowl XLIII betting, we should witness a nice little lesson in the NHL All-Star game odds this weekend. Sportsbook odds have the East as the favorite; maybe the oddsmakers are from Montreal too?

Thanks to the silly voting fiasco that saw Hab fans vote half their team into the All-Star game lineup, the East will be fielding a weaker lineup than normal in the NHL All-Star game line, especially with Sidney Crosby unable to play. While some online sports betting fans will bet confidently on the East, thinking they’ll be fired up by the home crowd, they have to remember that adrenaline is most beneficial when it produces physicality, and that won’t translate the same way in an All-Star game.

With superior goaltending and a big, strong defense corps, the West look like the better NHL betting pick. Look for the Joe Thornton/Patrick Marleau connection to dominate. Also, Patrick Kane (if he plays) and Jonathan Toews should provide some razzle dazzle. The West will take this one, maybe in a rout.

      Online betting pick: West

Dallas Mavericks at Boston Celtics [ABC | 1 PM ET]

Mavs: Dallas rebounded from its worst loss of the season with one of its most impressive wins, defeating Detroit 112-91 on Friday. The Mavs were led by Dirk Nowitzki's 26 points and will need more of the same against Boston. “When they play well, they’re really good,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers told said. “(Nowitzki) makes big shots, he’s a matchup nightmare every night. He still is a great three-point shooter but he’s playing more on the post and in other areas now.”

Mavs are 3-1 SU & ATS in their last 4 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-3 in Dallas' last 10 games vs. Eastern Conference.

          Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 90 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Celtics (-9, O/U 193): Boston will be going for its eighth straight victory on Sunday and has focused on defense to get the job done lately. The Celtics held Orlando to just 38.2 percent shooting in a 90-80 win on Thursday, snapping the Magic's seven-game winning streak. “Defense is our staple,” Boston leading scorer Paul Pierce said. “All year long, regardless of what the offense does, we’re going to depend on our defense night in and night out.”

Celtics are 6-1 ATS during their 7-game winning streak.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Boston's last 9 games overall.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 99

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Lakers [ABC | 3:30 PM ET]

Spurs: San Antonio brings a four-game winning streak into the Staples Center but will beginning a tough three-game road trip that continues with stops in Salt Lake City and Phoenix. The Spurs have won five of their last six road games but have lost five straight meetings with the Lakers at Staples. “This is going to be a tough schedule,” San Antonio point guard Tony Parker said. “You don’t want to get in that position where you lose the game before the road trip. Now we can focus and have a big game in L.A.”

Spurs are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 12-3 in San Antonio's last 15 games vs. Pacific Division.

          Key Injuries - NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: 97

Lakers (-6.5, O/U 202.5): Andrew Bynum is finally starting to show some of the promise that LA fans had hoped to see from him this season. Bynum may have been the missing link to an NBA title a year ago, and he is beginning to prove himself as one of the best young big men in the league. He has made 25-of-36 shots in the last two games, averaging 32.5 points and 14.5 rebounds. “If Andrew can continue to have that type of presence in the middle - no matter who the other team is - we’re going to be a much better team,” Lakers point guard Derek Fisher said. “He seems to just be getting more comfortable on the court, physically.”

Lakers are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The UNDER is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Jordan Farmar (knee) is OUT.

            Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charlotte Bobcats at Indiana Pacers (-3, 201)

Charlotte (18-25) hasn't finished with more than 33 wins or better than fourth place in the Southeast Division in any of its first four seasons of existence. Ending such futility didn't seem likely after the Bobcats lost seven straight games to fall to 7-18 on Dec. 15.

Since then, however, Charlotte has won 11 of 18, including five of its last six, to climb toward respectability. The Bobcats were especially effective Friday night, when they shot 51.3 percent and held Phoenix to a season-low point total in their 98-76 rout.

"We're 1,000 percent better," coach Larry Brown said. "Our players are better. We have a lot of guys that have improved, especially Emeka (Okafor), certainly Raymond (Felton) and Gerald. ... We defend better, we rebound better, we pass the ball better, our shot selection is better. I don't think there is an area where we haven't dramatically improved."

Pacers coach Jim O'Brien wasn't quite as complimentary of his team after its last game, but Indiana (16-27) took advantage of an injury-riddled Houston team in its 107-102 victory Friday night.

"Great win, they're all great," said O'Brien, whose team shot 39.3 percent from the field - its lowest mark in a win this season. "We had a chance in the third quarter to put them away and didn't take advantage of it. (But) the main thing is we won the game. ... I thought we did the necessary things to win the game."

The Pacers improved to 4-0 at home this month despite another poor shooting performance from Danny Granger. The fourth-year forward, who ranks among the league's leading scorers with 26.1 points per game, was 5-for-19 Friday and is shooting 33.7 percent over his last five contests.

            Pick: Pacers

Chicago Bulls at Minnesota Timberwolves (-5.5, 207)

Since losing 13 straight from Nov. 29-Dec. 23, Minnesota has gone 10-4. It's been particularly strong since the beginning of January, winning eight of its last 10.

The Timberwolves (14-27) opened this month with a five-game winning streak that included a 102-92 victory over the Bulls (18-26) in Chicago on Jan. 3. All five of those wins came against teams with losing records.

The Timberwolves, though, have since beaten a pair of the league's stronger teams, defeating the Phoenix Suns 105-103 on Jan. 16 and New Orleans Hornets 116-108 on Friday for their fifth win in their last six games at the Target Center.

Minnesota had seven players score in double figures against the Hornets and shot 51.3 percent from the field, going 10-of-21 from 3-point range. Al Jefferson and Randy Foye each scored 24 points with Jefferson adding 14 rebounds.

Foye is averaging 20.8 points in the last 10 games after scoring 14.4 in the previous 31. He was 4-of-8 from 3-point range on Friday and also had eight assists.

The Bulls have lost 12 of their last 17, including a season-high four straight after falling 114-94 to Toronto at home on Friday. Chicago hasn't dropped five in a row since a six-game skid from Nov. 14-24, 2006.

Ben Gordon had 19 points while Hinrich added 17 and seven assists in Friday's game, which was tied at 54 at the half before Toronto began the third quarter on a 13-1 run.

Chicago's previous three losses had been by a total of 12 points.

"I thought our energy to start the third quarter was not good," coach Vinny Del Negro said. "We are not good enough to do that. We have to play with high energy and play together."

Del Negro and Gordon reportedly got into an argument Thursday after Gordon was fined for being late to team flights. Gordon's averaging a team-leading 20.0 points per game, but just 13.8 in the last six contests.

Chicago has lost nine of its last 10 visits to Minnesota, scoring 67 points in its last game there on Jan. 30. The Bulls have dropped 15 of 19 overall meetings since the start of the 1999-2000 season.

            Pick: Under

Pittsburgh Panthers at West Virginia (-1)

Following an awful offensive display in its first loss of the season last weekend, Pittsburgh had one of its better offensive efforts its last time out.

It will likely be tough to duplicate that performance Sunday as the fourth-ranked Panthers visit West Virgina in a matchup featuring the top two defenses in the Big East.

After earning the school's first No. 1 ranking on Jan. 5, Pittsburgh (17-1, 5-1) was knocked out of the top spot following last Saturday's 69-63 loss at then-No. 20 Louisville.

The Panthers didn't stay down for long, though, as they bounced back with an impressive 78-60 win over No. 8 Syracuse just two days later.

They outrebounded the Orange 40-28 and held them nearly 22 points below their scoring average. Pitt is the top-ranked rebounding team in the Big East (41.1) and second in the league in scoring defense (59.4).

Senior point guard Levance Fields also regained his touch, finishing with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting after scoring eight points on 3-of-14 shooting against the Cardinals. He has totaled 29 points in his last two games versus the Mountaineers (14-4, 3-2).

Pitt split its two-game series with West Virginia last season with each team winning on its home court. The Panthers have lost three of their last four trips to Morgantown.

The Mountaineers return home after winning at No. 12 Georgetown 75-58 on Thursday. West Virginia, which was ranked earlier in the season, has won three straight games, and its only two losses in its last 10 came against then-No. 5 Connecticut and then-No. 18 Marquette.

In their three league wins, the Mountaineers have averaged 76.3 points and shot 47.1 percent from the field, including 40.0 percent from 3-point range. In two Big East losses, they shot 32.5 percent from the floor and 27.5 percent from beyond the arc while averaging 54.0 points.

Da'Sean Butler was 11-for-18 from the floor on Thursday to finish with 27 points in his second straight game. He shot 3-of-6 and had 10 points in West Virginia's 76-62 home win over the Panthers last season, but was 1-for-9 from the field in the Mountaineers' 55-54 loss at Pitt.

                    Pick: Pitt

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Clemson Tigers (-12)

Clemson came within a victory of tying the 2006-07 squad's school-record 17-0 start, but has dropped back-to-back games - to current No. 1 Wake Forest 78-68 on Jan. 17, and at No. 5 North Carolina 94-70 on Wednesday.

Continuing that skid could put the Tigers on a similar path to that record-setting team, which went 8-11 to close out the season and ended up in the NIT. Clemson also began last season 12-1 and went 12-9 after that, but earned its first NCAA Tournament berth in 10 seasons.

A combined 34.5 percent shooting has hampered the Tigers in their defeats this season. Clemson, which made 48.9 percent of their shots during its 16-0 start, has also allowed opponents to shoot 50.8 percent in the last two games.

In its 54th straight loss at North Carolina, the Tigers started the second half by missing 16 of their first 20 shots. They also gave up a season high for points and allowed the Tar Heels to shoot 53.0 percent.

Despite his team's struggles, sophomore guard Terrence Oglesby averaged 18.5 points in the consecutive losses. However, leading scorer Trevor Booker (14.6) has tallied only 16 in that span, and K.C. Rivers endured one of his worst games of the season against North Carolina with seven on 2-of-9 shooting.

The Yellow Jackets have started 0-5 in conference for the first time in seven seasons, but three of those losses have come in overtime, including the past two defeats.

Georgia Tech rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit on Tuesday against visiting Boston College. But Eagles star guard Tyrese Rice scored six of his game-high 26 points in the extra session to hand the Yellow Jackets their fourth straight loss, 80-76.

Georgia Tech also blew a 10-point lead with 4:40 remaining at North Carolina State on Jan. 17, and fell 76-71 for its fourth straight road defeat.

Georgia Tech has dropped nine of its last 10 against ranked opponents, but the lone victory was an 80-75 home win over then-No. 24 Clemson last season. The Yellow Jackets also defeated the then-25th-ranked Tigers in Atlanta on Feb. 3, 2007.

                    Pick: Clemson
