    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, January 23

There are a dozen games on the NBA schedule for Friday, including Allen Iverson and his Pistons hosting the Mavericks. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Cardinals are the surprising NFC champs this season, but Vegas oddsmakers will be surprised if they make it back to the Super Bowl next year. Kurt Warner and company are pegged at 15/2 odds to win the 2009/10 NFC championship, which puts them behind the Giants (4/1), Cowboys (5/1), Panthers (11/2), and Eagles (6/1) on that list. The Falcons are next at 6/1, with the Packers and Saints at 10/1, and the Vikings at 11/1. Washington then follows at 12/1 odds.

Next up are the Bears at 14/1, with the Buccaneers at 17/1, and the Niners at 22/1. The Seahawks sit back at 30/1 odds to be the next champions of the NFC, while the Rams are at a longshot 50/1 odds. At the bottom, of course, are the Lions, who at 75/1 odds to win the NFC would be the ultimate turnaround story.

    Other Notable Events

The Pistons are well back of LeBron's Cavaliers in the NBA's Central Division standings, while the Mavericks are just trying to get comfortable in the top eight of the Western Conference standings as we near the midway point of the season. Those two teams will meet up on Friday night in Detroit, with tipoff set for 7:00pm ET. The last time the Pistons and Mavericks met was last February, when Dallas managed just 67 points in a 90-67 Pistons romp up in Auburn Hills.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The Cavaliers are back in action on Friday as well; they'll be on the road in Golden State. Rounding out the NBA's slate: Phoenix at Charlotte, Houston at Indiana, Memphis at New York, Milwaukee at Atlanta, New Orleans at Minnesota, Toronto at Chicago, and New Jersey at San Antonio, while two of the West's worst will do battle in Los Angeles when the Clippers host the Thunder.

Meanwhile, there are just a handful of minor college hoops games Friday night, including Rider at Fairfield, Brown at Yale, and San Francisco at Santa Clara.

    News from the Wire

Claude Lemieux made his return to the NHL this week, playing fourth-line minutes for the league-leading Sharks . . . Canucks forward Pavol Demitra missed the team's final games before the break due to a groin injury . . . Clippers center Marcus Camby could miss more time than expected with his sprained ankle; recent reports suggest two weeks . . . Raptors guard Jose Calderon is still recovering from a hamstring injury, but hopes to be back in action this weekend.

    A Peek at the Future

The NBA offers up a battle of Florida on Saturday, with Orlando at Miami, while Cleveland will be in Utah in the other marquee game on the schedule . . . No. 2 Duke will try and get past conference rival Maryland at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday, with No. 3 Connecticut at Notre Dame, and Baylor at No. 6 Oklahoma . . . the NHL's All-Star weekend begins on Saturday, with the skills competition and the YoungStars game; the actual All-Star Game is Sunday night.

      Six-pack for Friday

-- Craig Robinson was at inauguration this week, but his assistants did superior job preparing Oregon State, and Beavers won 69-65 at Cal Thursday, as an 18-point underdog. Bad loss for the Bears.

-- St John's led Cincinnati by 11 at half, then got outscored 43-21 in second half of damaging 71-60 home loss. Hard to believe St. John's won't be changing coaches after the season.

-- Speaking of which, Seton Hall lost 98-93 in OT to Providence, in game when Pirates lost despite making 13-27 from the arc. Bobby Gonzalez' team is 0-6 in Big East, which isn't good for job security.

-- Rick Majerus' Saint Louis Billikens trailed 43-16 at the half of a 65-40 loss at Temple; Billikens shot 29.8% from the floor.

-- Utah State is 18-1. 6-0 in the WAC, despite starting three sophs.

-- UCLA was shaky down stretch again, blowing 15-point second half lead, but they got out of Pullman with a tense 61-59 win.

Friday's List of 13: .....I change the questions.......

        13) Without knowing, which conference championship game do you think NFL commish Roger Goodell went to last week, the night game in freezing Pittsburgh, or the day game in a domed stadium out in the desert? You don't become commissioner by being stupid.......

        12) Why did the Pistons trade for Allen Iverson? Made no sense at the time, makes even less sense now.

        11) Why was Tom Brady on a radio talk show in Toronto? No one in this country wants to talk to him?

        10) Wouldn't it be smarter and safer to have an indoor inauguration?

        9) Why are college basketball teams so erratic? Here's part of why: Baylor Bears made 14-43 from arc in their first two conference tilts, 25-49 in their next two, and they have experienced guards. Imagine a team with young guards, how inconsistent those teams are.......

        8) ESPN made a good decision? Wow-- Steve Phillips will be part of the Sunday Night Baseball crew, joining Jon Miller and Joe Morgan, so every word Phillips says is one Morgan can't say, which is very good, to say the least. Morgan is horrible.

        7) Why can't St Joe's hold a lead? Hawks have won two home games in OT, but they led by 17-16 points at the half in those two games.

        6) Wouldn't the NHL be smart to have at least one game a week on ESPN? They have an excellent product-- it makes no sense for them to hide their games on Versus.

        5) Is Matt Millen going to be on the Super Bowl pregame show? If he makes a prediction on the game, there could be a stampede to betting websites and sportsbooks in Vegas, as smart people go against the team Millen picks. He was emphatic Falcons would beat Arizona.

        4) Why do coaches go bald? Auburn lost by nine at Kentucky, and were outscored 26-2 on foul line. Wisconsin lost in OT at Iowa and got outscored 26-8 at charity stripe. Hawkeyes took 27 foul shots in the second half alone.

        3) Why isn't DePual better in basketball? Lot of good players out in Chicago; Blue Demons been outrebounded by 55 in last three games. Losing twice to South Florida isn't good for anyone's job security.

        2) Can you believe no one has signed Adam Dunn or Bobby Abreu?

        1) Did you catch Gary Payton's act on TNT's postgame show? He's hilarious-- can't always understand what he's saying, but he comes up with some funny stuff. At least he is enthusiastic-- Charles Barkley seems bored on the show now.

              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at Detroit Pistons [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Mavs: Dallas is coming off a devastating 133-99 loss at Milwaukee on Wednesday, the team's worst performance since November 17th, 2001. The Mavs have obviously not played good defense lately, surrendering an average of 109.6 points in losing five of their last seven games. “It’s just embarrassing, really,” Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki said after losing to the Bucks. “They got whatever they wanted - wide-open shots, drives, layups.” Another problem is the lack of offensive production from point guard Jason Kidd, who is averaging a career-low 9.1 points per game and has only one game of 10 or more assists in his last 11 games.

Mavs are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Dallas' last 8 road games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 86 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Pistons (-4, O/U 182): Like Kidd, Allen Iverson is struggling with his new team, averaging a career-low 17.9 points this season. Iverson still was named a starter for the Eastern Conference All-Star team despite those low numbers, but he has averaged 29.7 points and 8.7 assists in his last three games against the Mavs. However, it was Tayshaun Prince who stepped up with 25 points in an 95-76 win over Toronto on Wednesday. “I call him the ‘Quiet Assassin’ because he gets the job done quietly,” Detroit forward Jason Maxiell said about Prince. “People may forget about him, but he gets the job done.”

Pistons are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 home games.
The UNDER is 23-8-1 in Detroit's last 32 games overall.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 90

Cleveland Cavaliers at Golden State Warriors [10:30 PM ET]

Cavs (-6.5, O/U 215): Cleveland avoided losing consecutive games for the first time this season with a 104-98 win at Portland on Wednesday. LeBron James paved the way with 34 points and a season-high 14 assists, and he was especially impressed with how his team handled the situation after losing to the Lakers 105-88 on Monday. “One thing I’m very excited about is the way we bounce back after a loss,” James said. “Every guy on this team knows we’re fighting for a championship. We want to get better every night because we’re fighting for something really big down the road.”

Cavs are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The UNDER is 7-3 in Cleveland's last 10 games vs. Western Conference.

Key Injuries - G Delonte West (wrist) is OUT.
C Zydrunas Ilgauskas (ankle) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 109

Warriors: Golden State will welcome back Monta Ellis, who was suspended for the first 30 games of the season without pay after crashing his scooter and injuring his ankle in the offseason. Ellis had just signed a 6-year, $66 million contract following a career season in which he averaged 20.2 points per game. “We decided as a group after practice that Friday’s game would be a good situation for me,” Ellis said. “I have worked extremely hard during my rehabilitation, with the help of the Warriors’ staff, and feel that I’m ready to go. It’s just nice to get back to the game that I love and to play for the fans who have been so good to me. I’m really pumped.”

Warriors are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 Friday games.
The OVER is 7-1 in Golden State's last 8 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - C Andris Biedrins (wrist) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 106 (Side Play of the Day)

                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Orleans Hornets at Minnesota Timberwolves (+2, 194)

Kevin McHale has the Midas touch.

The Timberwolves, who were just 5-14 through their first 19 games, are 9-11 since McHale took over coaching duties from Randy Whitman on Dec. 8.

In fact, McHale has led the T-Wolves to a solid 7-3 straight up (SU) and 9-1 against the spread (ATS) record in their last 10 overall.

But McHale is quick to praise his players for the clubs recent success, especially rookie Kevin Love.

“He’s so far advanced for a 20 year old, it’s ridiculous,” McHale told the Los Angeles Times.

Love is averaging eight points and eight rebounds but has put up 11.4 points and 10.6 rebounds a night in his last 10 outings. He has four double-doubles in that stretch.

“When he blends his instincts with the knowledge of the NBA game . . . that’s when he’s really going to take off,” McHale continued.

Love and T-Wolves leading scorer Al Jefferson (22.2 PPG) should get a lot of easy looks Friday.

Hornets forward David West and center Tyson Chandler are both doubtful Friday. West has missed two straight due to back spasms and Chandler is sidelined with a sprained ankle that he suffered Monday against the Indiana Pacers.

                Pick: Timberwolves +2

Oklahoma City Thunder at Los Angeles Clippers (+2.5, 194)

The Clippers have just nine triumphs in 41 contests but two of those came over the Thunder.

But the difference Friday is that the Clippers will be playing without Baron Davis, Marcus Camby, Chris Kaman and Zach Randolph.

“Health is our issue,” Camby told the Los Angeles Daily News. “Myself, Chris, Baron, Zach. That core right there, we should make the playoffs.”

The playoffs are virtually out of the question. Los Angeles' focus should be on finishing the season out of last place, which it will be competing for with the Thunder.

Los Angeles and OKC are both last in their respective divisions. But the Thunder have been playing their best basketball recently.

Oklahoma City is 5-5 SU and 8-2 ATS in its last 10 overall. The Clippers, meanwhile, are 1-9 SU and 5-5 ATS in their last 10 overall.

                Pick: Thunder -2.5
