    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, January 13

The Lakers and Rockets will meet on the court in Houston on Tuesday, while the Habs and Bruins will skate in Boston. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Philadelphia Eagles sit as 3-point road favorites against the Arizona Cardinals for Sunday's NFC Championship Game, with the total at 48 points. That contest is set to kick off at 3:30pm ET on FOX. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers are sitting as 5.5-point home favorites on the early line for the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens. That game is set to get underway at 6:30pm ET on Sunday evening, with the total listed at just 33 points.

    Other Notable Events

The Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens sit 1-2 in the Northeast Division standings heading into Tuesday's night Beantown meeting, and they've both been on a roll lately. Boston is 8-2-0 over their past 10 games to sit at 31-7-4 on the season, while Montreal is 8-1-1 in their last 10 to boost their mark to 25-10-6. These two teams have already met three times this season, with Boston winning 6-1 at home in November, and the other two games getting split up in Montreal.

There are two more battles between rivals on the NHL's busy Tuesday schedule, with Pittsburgh at Philadelphia and the Rangers at the Islanders. As well, it's Colorado at Columbus, Edmonton at Washington, Carolina at Ottawa, Nashville at Toronto, Phoenix at Minnesota, St. Louis at Calgary, and New Jersey at Vancouver, while league-leading San Jose will get a visit from lowly Tampa Bay.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The Lakers and Rockets will both be seeking their fourth straight wins on Tuesday night when they meet in Houston. Los Angeles is now 30-6 SU but just 16-20 ATS on the season, while Houston is 24-15 SU and 18-21 ATS. The other big NBA matchups on Tuesday feature Dallas at Denver and Atlanta at Phoenix, while Orlando will be on the road in Sacramento and Cleveland will visit Memphis. Rounding out the slate: Charlotte at Detroit, and Miami at Minnesota.

Finally, the top college hoops matchup on Tuesday has Kentucky playing in Knoxville against Tennessee. The ranked Volunteers beat Georgia 86-77 last time out to improve to 10-4 SU and 8-4 ATS on the season, while the Wildcats (12-4 SU, 7-3-1 ATS) are coming off a 70-60 win over Vanderbilt. Also on Tuesday it's Indiana at Ohio State, Florida State at North Carolina State, Memphis at Tulsa, UCF at UAB, Kansas State at Kansas, and then TCU at BYU.

    News from the Wire

Canadiens backup netminder Jaroslav Halak has won four straight starts in place of injured starter Carey Price (ankle), and is expected to be between the pipes again on Tuesday versus the Bruins . . . Rockets guard Tracy McGrady is doubtful to play against the Lakers on Tuesday due to his sore knee . . . the Broncos have named former Pats co-ordinator Josh McDaniels their head coach.

    A Peek at the Future

The Celtics will be back on the court at home against the Nets in NBA action on Wednesday night, while New Orleans is at Dallas and the Lakers visit the Spurs in San Antonio . . . Duke will take on Georgia Tech in college hoops action on Wednesday, while Pittsburgh hosts South Florida and Syracuse battles Georgetown . . . the Red Wings and Ducks will meet on the ice in Anaheim on Wednesday night, while Sidney Crosby and the Penguins will host Washington.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

Some college knowledge for a Tuesday morning.....

-- The average Division I college basketball team is shooting 68.6% from the foul line this season.

-- An average possession at D-I level lasts 17.8 seconds, based on each team getting an average of 67.4 possessions a game.

-- An average D-I teams gets 31.4% of its points from the bench; so a team that averages 70 ppg gets 22 points from its subs.

-- This is how an average team gets its points: 27.5% on 3's, 52.1% on 2's, and 20.3% from the foul line.

-- Purdue is playing best FG% defense in country; their adjusted FG% is just 40.7%, allowing 1.5 baskets made for a 3-pointer.

-- Arizona State's adjusted FG% is 60.5%, best is USA; teams that shoot a high percentage have fewer scoring droughts, naturally.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts for a winter day......

        13) For the last 20+ years, I've spent late Monday nights in winter watching a west coast college hoop game on ESPN; now it appears they're not having a Big Monday midnight game anymore, which is too bad. We first came to know Tark's Rebels, Westhead LMU team, and in recent years, Gonzaga, St Mary's teams in this timeslot. Hard to believe one of the west coast leagues wouldn't play on Mondays.

        12) Who knew Ben Roethlisberger punts left-footed? He downed a punt at the San Diego 9-yard line with a quick kick Sunday.

        11) I'm glad Jim Rice got elected to the Hall of Fame; the sight of him with a bat in his hand was never pleasant. As an A's fan, obviously I am also delighted for Rickey Henderson, the best leadoff man ever.

        10) Billy Packer, Bob Knight are teaming up to do series of one-hour TV shows from Wynn Casino in Las Vegas in March, talking about the NCAA tournament. Gambling won't be mentioned, supposedly.

        9) Life on the road can be tough; Canisius just made road swing over weekend to Iona, Fairfield; in the two games, Canisius was just 10-24 from the foul line; their opponents were 46-65, in games Canisius lost by 11 and 3 points. Griffs are 0-6 in MAAC but will win soon.

        8) In Cincinnati's first three Big East games, their opponents made 35 of 64 3-pointers, and shot 54.0/53.8/59.2% from the floor. Not good. If those stats don't improve, they ain't winning many games.

        7) Over the last five seasons, NFL kickers made 82% of their FG's; in the five years from 1974-78, the first five years OT existed in NFL, kickers made just 62% of FGs (there were still lot of straight-on K's in the league then). This is why lot of people want OT rules changed, so that each team gets a possession in an overtime game.

        6) Chargers ran one play in third quarter Sunday, but managed to turn ball over twice, with a Pittsburgh punt hitting a blocker on the head. Have never seen a team be so inept in one quarter before.

        5) Tim Tebow had his right shoulder scoped Monday; you wonder if this is a chronic problem, since he also had it last year. He'll be one of the more interesting studies, when he goes into the 2010 NFL Draft.

        4) Texas Longhorns look like they have chemistry issues; they miss DJ Augustin at point guard, for sure.

        3) Iona Gaels are 0-3 on road in MAAC, but the three losses are by a combined total of four points.

        2) Boston College beat North Carolina, then lost to Harvard, which then went to Dartmouth and won by just one point. Wake Forest is going to BC Wednesday, after beating the Tar Heels. Hmmmmm....

        1) Someone has to explain to me why NFC title game is an afternoon game, and the game in Pittsburgh is at night. Does anyone in the NFL care about the people who buy tickets to the games?

              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at Denver Nuggets [6 PM ET]

Mavs: Dallas has failed to cover five straight games, dropping two in a row straight-up as well heading into the finale of the team's three-game road trip. The Mavs played without Josh Howard in a 102-95 loss at Sacramento on Sunday after he injured his wrist in the third quarter of a 128-100 rout by Phoenix last Friday. Dirk Nowitzki scored just 15 points against the Kings and realizes he must do a better job of filling the void left by Howard. “We are obviously missing Josh, but we have to play better,” Nowitzki said. “They double team me on the post regularly, but I still have to make more than six shots. I had some great looks, but it was just a tough night shooting the ball.”

Mavs are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 16-6 in Dallas' last 22 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - PG Jason Kidd (elbow) is questionable.
F Josh Howard (wrist) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Nuggets (-5.5, O/U 207): Denver is 4-3 without star Carmelo Anthony and will be looking to avoid consecutive home losses for the first time in almost a year. The Nuggets have already beaten Dallas twice this season and own a 5-1 SU mark in the last six meetings. However, Denver has never beaten Dallas without Anthony, going 0-3 during his career when he has not played and dropping 11 straight games in the series without him on the floor dating back to 2001 (two years before his rookie season). J.R. Smith will get his first start filling in for Anthony since scoring 27 points against Philly in a 105-101 victory back on December 26th.

Nuggets are 6-0 ATS in the last 6 meetings.
The OVER is 8-1 in Denver's last 9 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Carmelo Anthony (hand) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charlotte Bobcats at Detroit Pistons (-7, 175.5)

The Bobcats have been playing some of their best basketball recently.

They have won three of their last five contests and are fresh off a road victory over the struggling Washington Wizards.

The acquisition of Raja Bell and Boris Diaw has worked out for the Bobcats. The pair combined to score 37 points in the Bobcats’ victory over the Wizards. Charlotte is 8-7 against the spread (ATS) since acquiring Bell and Diaw.

Detroit has lost two of its last three overall and suffered an embarrassing setback Saturday, falling 99-82 to the Utah Jazz.

“No excuses,” Allen Iverson told reporters. “It had nothing to do with being the last game of the [road] trip, dead legs, anything. They were just better than us and they whooped us tonight.”

Detroit is returning from a four-game road trip and could come out sluggish against the Bobcats.

The Pistons are 6-11 ATS at the Palace. Charlotte, meanwhile, is 10-6 ATS on the road.

                Pick: Bobcats

Atlanta Hawks at Phoenix Suns (-6.5, 212)

Although the Hawks won’t have center Al Horford, they should still give the Suns a run for their money Tuesday.

The Hawks are just 7-10 straight up (SU) on the road but are 10-7 against the spread (ATS) in that stretch.

The Hawks have covered the number in four of their last seven against Phoenix. The Suns, meanwhile, are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 at home.

Atlanta lacked energy in Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia 76ers but is desperate for a victory and should start strong against Phoenix.

“It’s part of the NBA," Joe Johnson told reporters. “There are going to be injuries. That’s not an excuse for why we’re losing. We’re just not playing with energy at the start of the game.”

Hawks coach Mike Woodson thinks his team has to get back to basics and start playing defense.

“I think Orlando took some starch out of us a little bit,” Woodson told reporters. “We’re not competing defensively like we have been, and that’s on me. I’ve got to get them back playing defense because that’s the only chance we have of winning.”

Luckily for the Hawks, Phoenix is just 1-5 ATS in its last six against the Eastern Conference.

                Pick: Hawks

Montréal Canadiens at Boston Bruins (-175, 5.5)

Not only are the two best teams in the Eastern Conference facing off in this game, but head coaches Claude Julien and Guy Carbonneau also get to outwit one another before joining forces as head coach and assistant coach of the Eastern Conference All-Star team.

The Habs have been on fire recently, winning their last four games and scoring a total of 23 goals during this time. Sergei Kostitsyn scored the go-ahead goal with 21.2 seconds remaining earned Montreal a 6-5 victory over the Washington Capitals Saturday night. They managed a total of three come-from-behind markers and racked up two power-play goals for the third consecutive game.

The resurgence is good news for a Habs team that had been struggling with their offensive special teams for the better part of the season’s first half.

“We’re working harder, supporting each other way more, getting a lot of traffic in front of the net and getting rebounds,” Tomas Plekanec told reporters when asked about the newly-successful power play. Plekanec has himself found his game with three goals and four assists in the past eight games.

Even though the Bruins have lost two of their last four games, they have won eight of their last 10 and cruised past the Carolina Hurricanes in a 5-1 win Saturday.

                              Pick: Over

Tampa Bay Lightning at San Jose Sharks (-370, 5.5)

It’s been a dismal year so far for the Tampa Bay Lightning and to make matters worse, trade rumors involving franchise-player Vincent Lecavalier keep plaguing the team.

Speculations involve Lecavalier going to Montréal in exchange for as many as four players including Chris Higgins and possibly Tomas Plekanec along with a prospect such as PK Subban of the Belleville Bulls, according to TSN.ca. The Lightning’s front office isn’t in agreement on this topic, some wanting Lecavalier gone, others wishing he would stay.

The way the Lightning have been playing, it’s obvious something needs to change. They hold one of the worst records in the Eastern Conference and have the third worst offense in the league scoring a meager 2.41 goals a game.

The Sharks, on the other hand, have an elite offense, defense and power play. The best team in the NHL collected a big 4-2 win on Saturday against a fired up Vancouver team led by the newly-acquired Mats Sundin.

                              Pick: Sharks
