    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, January 12

Chris Paul and his Hornets squad will play host to the sliding Knicks in NBA hoops action on Monday evening. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The road teams ruled in the NFL's Divisional Round on Saturday, as Baltimore got past Tennessee 13-10 as a 3-point underdog, and Arizona blasted Carolina 33-13 as big 10-point 'dogs. Ravens rookie QB Joe Flacco went 11-of-22 for 161 yards passing in his team's win, with one TD strike and no interceptions. Cards veteran pivot Kurt Warner was 21-of-32 for 220 yards, with two TDs and one INT.

On Sunday the Eagles got things going with a 23-11 road upset of the defending-champion Giants as 4-point underdogs. Donovan McNabb went 22-of-40 for 217 yards in that win, with one passing TD, one rushing TD, and two interceptions. In the late game the Steelers finally put a win on the board for the home side, handily topping the Chargers 35-24 as a 6-point favorite. Ben Roethlisberger completed 17-of-26 pass attempts for 181 yards with one touchdown on the day.

That means this weekend's conference championship games will have Philadelphia travelling to Arizona, and then Pittsburgh playing host to Baltimore.

    Other Notable Events

The New Orleans Hornets blasted the Los Angeles Clippers 107-80 in their last game on Friday night to boost their record to 22-11 straight-up and 14-17-2 against-the-spread. The Hornets will try to improve those marks on Monday night when the New York Knicks (13-22 SU, 18-17 ATS) come to town. The Knicks played in Houston on Saturday, falling 96-76 to pick up their third straight defeat.

There are five other games on the NBA's schedule for Monday night, including the Trail Blazers on the road in Chicago. As well, it's Milwaukee at Washington, Oklahoma City at New Jersey, and Indiana at Utah, while the Raptors and Celtics will finish a home-and-home set in Boston; those teams were in Toronto Sunday.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The National Hockey League offers up just two games on Monday, including Detroit on the road in Dallas. The Red Wings improved to 29-7-5 on Saturday with a 3-1 home win over Buffalo; Ty Conklin made 22 saves in that victory. The 17-17-6 Stars were blanked 1-0 by Phoenix in a shootout on Saturday, with Marty Turco making 28 stops in a losing cause. The other matchup features a couple of bottom feeders, as Tampa Bay heads to the other coast to meet L.A.

Finally, there are two college hoops games of note on Monday night. First off it's No. 13 Notre Dame at No. 23 Louisville; the Fighting Irish got past Seton Hall 88-79 in their last game, while the Cardinals are coming off a slim 61-10 victory over Villanova. After that it's No. 7 Texas at No. 6 Oklahoma; the Longhorns beat Iowa State 75-67 last time out, while the Sooners knocked off Kansas State 61-53. As well, formerly-ranked Davidson will head out to take on Appalachian State.

    News from the Wire

The Red Sox inked free-agent starting pitcher Brad Penny to a one-year contract over the weekend, while the Marlins have shown interest in fellow free-agent hurler Pedro Martinez . . . forward Brendan Shanahan has decided to sign with the Devils for the rest of the NHL season; he began his career in New Jersey . . . Rockets forward Ron Artest is still missing games because of his ankle injury.

    A Peek at the Future

The NBA's marquee matchups on Tuesday night sees the Lakers at Houston, Atlanta at Phoenix, and Dallas at Denver, while LeBron James and his Cavaliers will be on the road in Memphis . . . old rivals Montreal and Boston will meet on the ice in Beantown in NHL action on Tuesday night, while Pittsburgh will be in Philadelphia . . . No. 15 Tennessee will host Kentucky in Tuesday college hoops.

      Six-pack for Monday

Scanning some of the early college hoop conference races.......

-- Cal Bears are surprising 4-0 in Pac-10, just ahead of UCLA (3-0) and Arizona State (3-1). Cal was picked 8th in preseason poll.

-- Siena (6-0) leads the MAAC, ahead of Rider (4-1), Niagara (4-1); Eagles got ripped at Marist Sunday. Saints are 6-0, but 0-6 against the spread, which is hard to do.

-- Michigan State (3-0) is only unbeaten in Big 11, with few teams right behind Spartans with one loss. Tubby Smith's Gophers have been the biggest surprise, opening season 15-1, 3-1.

-- Northern Iowa, Bradley, Drake are all 4-1 in Missouri Valley-- Wichita State, Missouri State, usually two of league's contenders, have both yet to win a conference game.

-- George Mason, Northeastern are tied atop Colonial at 5-0, with VCU right behind at 4-1. NC-Wilmington, usually a contender, has slipped to 4-13 and is in the bottom 30 in the entire country.

-- Marquette, Syracuse are both 4-0 in Big East, with Louisville and Pitt right behind at 2-0; Cardinals host Notre Dame Monday night. Cincinnati-DePaul-Rutgers-Seton Hall are combined 0-15 in league.

Monday's List of 13: Random thoughts from sports weekend

        13) At the end of the day, the whole Plaxico Burress episode came back to haunt the Giants; they scored 37 points on Philly in the game Burress played; without him, they scored one offensive TD in two games against the Eagles, and that came in garbage time.

        12) If Buccaneers don't blow a 10-point lead to Oakland in second half of the last regular season game, the Eagles don't make playoffs, and the Giants might still be playing.

        11) Now that the Giants are out, it is open season on their assistant coaches, so Spagnuolo will be going to lot of interviews this week, and probably will have his pick of open jobs.

        10) Looks like the Broncos are going to hire Josh McDaniels as head coach, so that quashes the theory that Matt Cassel was going to go wherever McDaniels went, since Denver is very set at quarterback. It also means the Patriots have to hire a new offensive coordinator.

        9) Good news for Florida Gator fans: Tim Tebow is coming back for his senior season in Gainesville.

        8) Bob Costas/Tony Kubek were announcing the Toronto/Oakland playoff game on MLB Network last night; I had forgotten just how good an analyst Kubek was-- no jokes, no BS, he just talked about baseball. That really is enough.

        7) Bad news for the Texas Rangers, real bad news; Michael Young has asked the team to look into trading him. The last thing Rangers need is to trade their best player.

        6) Philadelphia Eagles' defensive coordinator Jim Johnson was in the press box Sunday because of a bad back; it was first time with Eagles that Johnson wasn't on the sidelines. Even though he is a defensive coordinator, one of the best, Johnson was a college QB at Missouri.

        5) Niagara went to Marist with 4-0 record in MAAC, but shot 19% in first half, and got hammered 86-68 by Red Foxes in Poughkeepsie.

        4) Minnesota Gophers shot 62.5% from floor, made all nine 3's, and moved to 4-1 in Big 11 with a 20-point win over Penn State. They're liable to throw Tubby Smith a parade in Twin Cities pretty soon.

        3) Good ballgame out west last night, as UCLA won at USC for the third straight year, beating Trojans by five points. Watching Trojans play, it is hard to believe they lost to Oregon State, but they did.

        2) Huge night for Wake Forest, which stayed unbeaten by beating North Carolina 92-89 at home, in game that threatened to turn into a foul shooting contest (Wake was 28-39, Carolina 31-38 from line).

        1) Ten days ago, I seriously believed North Carolina would run the table this season and be the first unbeaten team in 33 years. Look at the ACC standings now; the Tar Heels are 0-2, and in last place.

Portland Trail Blazers at Chicago Bulls (+2, 193)

The Portland Trail Blazers received a big lift their last time out, as Brandon Roy returned to the lineup to spark them offensively.

Roy and the Trail Blazers look for another strong offensive performance Monday, as they try to win three straight for the first time in more than five weeks in a matchup with the scuffling Chicago Bulls.

After missing four games with a hamstring injury, Roy returned Saturday and finished with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists in Portland's 113-100 win over Golden State. Blazers coach Nate McMillan had planned to ease Roy back in, but with the game on the line, couldn't keep his star on the bench.

Roy played about 6 minutes in each of the first three quarters before playing every minute of the fourth. Roy, averaging a team-high 22.8 points, scored nine in the final period.

"I was really pleased with Brandon's performance after the layoff," McMillan said. "I said earlier that we would only play him 20 to 25 minutes, but as the game wore on he said he felt better and wanted to play more. We gave him the ball down the stretch and he helped us close the game out."

Roy's return clearly inspired Portland (22-14), which went 2-2 in his absence against reigning division winners Boston, New Orleans, Detroit and the Los Angeles Lakers. The Blazers averaged 84.5 points in those games, compared to 99.7 points with Roy in the lineup this season.

Roy now tries to lead Portland, two games back of Northwest Division-leading Denver, to its first three-game winning streak since it reeled off a season-high six in a row Nov. 24-Dec. 3.

The Blazers had no trouble beating the Bulls in their first meeting of the season, scoring a season-high 62 first-half points en route to a 116-74 win - their most lopsided of the season.

Roy led Portland with 20 points in that game, and is averaging 24.3 points during his team's three-game winning streak against Chicago.

                  Pick: Portland -2

New York Knicks at New Orleans Hornets (-12, 201)

The New Orleans Hornets likely wouldn't mind a few more home games, while the New York Knicks are probably looking forward to the end of their miserable road trip.

Heading to New Orleans Arena on Monday, however, would only seem to deepen the Knicks' road woes.

The Hornets (22-11) have won three straight at home and are 9-1 in their last 10 at New Orleans Arena. New York, meanwhile, has dropped three straight on its four-game road trip and is 3-12 in its last 15 away from home.

The Knicks (13-22) are also 1-12 when scoring fewer than 100 points this season, and will face one of the league's top defensive teams in New Orleans, which has held opponents to 92.2 points per game and 89.3 at home.

Only the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento have reached the century mark at New Orleans this season, resulting in two of the Hornets' four losses in a 12-4 home record.

New Orleans is also one of the league's best teams at closing out opponents with a 19-1 record when leading after three quarters, while New York is 0-18 when trailing entering the final period.

If that wasn't enough, the Hornets have won seven straight over the Knicks dating back to Jan. 11, 2005.

                  Pick: Under 201

#13 Notre Dame at #21 Louisville [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish have lost in each of their last five trips to Louisville and are not nearly the same team away from home. They have dropped three of their last four away from home overall, shooting just 37 percent from the field during that stretch. Notre Dame also has another tough road games at Syracuse on Saturday following this meeting with the Cardinals. “We have two road games ahead against top teams,” Notre Dame guard Kyle McAlarney said. “It’s going to be a battle for us, game in and game out, but we just need to take it one game at a time.”

Notre Dame is 3-0 ATS in the last 3 meetings.
The OVER is 20-7 in Notre Dame's last 27 games vs. Big East.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Louisville (-6.5): The Cardinals have put together a three-game winning streak after losing two of three, getting off to a 2-0 start in Big East play to begin conference play with victories at South Florida and Villanova. “I’ve looked forward to this year more than any other,” Louisville head coach Rick Pitino said. “You’ll never see 12, 13 teams as tough as this. It’s special, I’ll tell you that.” The Cardinals went 8-1 SU vs. league foes at home last season and will play five of their next seven games at Freedom Hall.

Louisville is 26-7-2 ATS in its last 35 games vs. Big East.
The UNDER is 17-6-1 in Louisville's last 24 home games.

Key Injuries - F George Goode (shin) is questionable.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

#7 Texas at #6 Oklahoma [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Texas: The Longhorns are hoping that leading scorer A.J. Abrams can snap out of his shooting slump against Oklahoma. Abrams has been limited to single digits in four of his last five games for Texas, shooting just 28.8 percent from the field during that stretch. He averaged almost 15 points per game against the Sooners last year in helping the Longhorns win all three meetings.“It’s going to be great - it is what you play college ball for these types of games,” Texas forward Damion James said. “Oklahoma maybe has the best player in the country with Blake Griffin. It’s going to be a great crowd, it’s going to be so much fun.”

Texas is 23-8 ATS in its last 31 Monday games.
The UNDER is 21-8-1 in Texas' last 30 Monday games.

Key Injuries - F Alexis Wangmene (knee) is OUT.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Oklahoma (-4): The Sooners have lost the last six meetings with the Longhorns by an average of nearly 17 points. So what could be the difference this time around? Well, Texas and Oklahoma are both ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since March of 2006. The last win in the series for the Sooners came in January of 2006. In addition, Oklahoma leads the Big 12 in defensive field-goal percentage, holding opponents to 37.7 percent shooting. “At times it should be questioned because we haven’t played great on defense at times, but I wouldn’t say that we are a poor defensive team,” Sooners forward Blake Griffin said. “We are going to have to prove that to people and that is fine.”

Oklahoma is 8-18 ATS in its last 26 games vs. Big 12.
The UNDER is 8-0 in Oklahoma's last 8 games vs. Big 12.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD
