    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, January 11

The NFL will finish its Divisional Playoffs on Sunday afternoon, with Philadelphia at the Giants, and San Diego at Pittsburgh. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Giants and Eagles split their season series, with both teams winning on the road. The Giants (12-4 straight-up, 12-4 against-the-spread during the regular season) won 36-31 in Philadelphia in Week 10. The Eagles (9-6-1 SU, 10-6 ATS) grabbed a 20-14 win in New York in Week 14. Donovan McNabb threw for 191 yards and one TD in that victory, while Eli Manning was held to just 123 yards passing with a single TD strike. For Sunday afternoon the oddsmakers have set the Giants as a 4-point home favorite, while the total for the contest is 40 points.

The Steelers beat the Chargers 11-10 in their infamous meeting in San Diego back in Week 11, with a late Pittsburgh touchdown overturned and costing the team the cover. Ben Roethlisberger threw for 308 yards in that win, and Jeff Reed booted three field goals. Philip Rivers had just 159 yards passing in the loss, and was picked off twice by the Steelers defense. Pittsburgh went 12-4 SU and 9-7 ATS on the year, while San Diego finished the regular season at 8-8 SU and 7-8-1 ATS. The Steelers are 6-point favorites Sunday, with the total at 37.5.

    Other Notable Events

Top-ranked Pittsburgh got past Georgetown 70-54 in their last outing, and they'll be looking to secure their spot atop the rankings for another week with a win over St. John's on Sunday afternoon (12:00pm ET tipoff). The Panthers are 14-0 SU and 6-3 ATS on the season, while the Red Storm sit at 10-4 SU and 4-4-1 ATS.

The big college hoops matchup on Sunday, though, sees No. 3 North Carolina heading to Winston-Salem for a game against No. 4 Wake Forest (8:00pm ET). The Tar Heels are 14-1 SU and 7-7 ATS on the season, while the Demon Deacons have posted records of 13-0 SU and 5-4 ATS. The only other Top-10 team in action on Sunday is No. 10 UCLA, who will play at USC at 10:30pm ET.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The San Antonio Spurs beat the Los Angeles Clippers 106-84 on Thursday to move to 24-11 SU and 17-17-1 ATS on the season, and they'll return to action on Sunday night with a home game against the Orlando Magic. A dozen other teams will take the court around the NBA on Sunday, including the Celtics on the road in Toronto in a 12:30pm ET tipoff. Rounding out the slate: Philadelphia at Atlanta, Phoenix at the Clippers, Indiana at Golden State, and Dallas at Sacramento, while Kobe Bryant and the Lakers will host Dwyane Wade's Heat.

Rounding out the week's schedule, the NHL offers up three games on Sunday. That slate includes Nashville at Chicago in the second of back-to-back games between the teams. That contest will get underway at 7:00pm ET. The other two games on the NHL docket: St. Louis at Edmonton, and New Jersey at Anaheim.

    A Peek at the Future

      Weekend's six-pack

Some baseball knowledge to warm up a gloomy, overcast weekend

-- Randy Johnson has hit 188 hitters in his career, 25 more than any other active pitcher (Wakefield 163/PMartinez 137).

-- Jason Kendall has been hit by a pitch 231 times, 63 more times than Carlos Delgado, 74 more than Jason Giambi.

-- Omar Vizquel has 239 career sacrifice bunts; the next four active players on the list are all pitchers; Juan Pierre (101) has next most sac bunts of active position players.

-- Greg Maddux, in his tremendous career, faced 20,421 batters.

-- Tom Glavine has faced 4,173 batters in his career who either got a walk, struck out or were hit by a pitch. Thats 4,173 batters who never hit a fair ball of Glavine, who wasn't/isn't a strikeout pitcher.

-- The object of baseball is to score runs; Ken Griffey Jr has 1,612 runs scored, more than any other active player.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a busy sports Saturday.......

        13) January 10, 2009 was a heckuva day, which is lucky, since it is snowing like hell out as I type this, so not much to do out in the real world tonight. Two NFL playoff upsets, three triple OT basketball games in college, even caught Jerry Springer on a talk show tonight. Can't beat thirteen hours of live sports on TV, unless its with 14......

        12) Two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner led his team to the NFC title game Saturday, as Arizona went to Charlotte and kicked butt, with a very easy 33-13 win over the stunned Panthers. After winning only one playoff game since 1947, they've won two this month. If Philly upsets the Giants Sunday, Arizona hosts the NFC title game.

        11) In the AFC, a rookie QB and a rookie coach won a road playoff game for the second week in a row, ending Tennessee's dream season as Baltimore advanced with a dramatic 13-10 win in Nashville.

        10) Rhode Island was down 17 at the half in Philly against St Joe's on Saturday, rallied to tie game, but then wound up losing in three OTs, 92-86. St Joe's was 24-40 from the line for the game, Rams were just 12-19. It was the first of three triple OT games on a wild day......

        9) Cal Bears are now 15-2 after surviving 55 minutes of drama out in Seattle-- Washington led just about the whole game, but a horrendous foul at the end of the second OT (you have to see it to believe exactly how horrible a play it was) extended the game, and a mentally tough Golden Bears squad moved to 4-0 in the Pac-10 with the win. Tough loss for Washington, but the Huskies might still be an NCAA squad.

        8) Former LSU coach John Brady has done pretty well in his initial season at Arkansas State, but his team lost 86-83 to North Texas in triple OT Saturday night in Denton, despite UNT missing 16 FTs.

        7) Dane Suttle Jr plays for Pepperdine; his dad was best player for the '83 Pepperdine Waves, an 80% foul shooter, who missed pair of key foul shots in a first round game against NC State, which allowed the Wolfpack to weasel out a first round win, and well, you know the rest of the story. NC State won the national title. Now Pepperdine is trying to rebuild from the ground up, hoping to get back to NCAAs once again some day. Maybe this time, those foul shots will go in.

        6) Northern Iowa shot 70.5% from the floor in their win vs Missouri State- can't remember too many teams shooting 70% from the floor.

        5) Oregon State coach Craig Robinson, better known as Mrs Obama's brother, got tossed from the Beavers' loss at Arizona Saturday, just his fourth Pac-10 game. He better recruit really well, or he's going to want to get thrown out of a lot more games. These Beavers are awful.

        4) Arkansas couldn't stand prosperity; after upsetting Oklahoma and Texas at home, the Hogs got whacked at home in their SEC opener by Mississippi State, 70-56. Conference play definitely changes things.

        3) Some night, turn the sound off on your TV and watch a Big East game without sound; you'll be amazed at how much contact they let happen. You see a guy drive to hoop, you expect them to stop, but they keep playing-- has to be lot of contact to be a foul.

        2) Did you know Jerry Springer was once mayor of Cincinnati, and a ballboy at the US Tennis Open? Well, now you do.

        1) We're now 60:00 away from having the Arizona Cardinals play in the Super Bowl three months after the Tampa Bay Rays played in a World Series. In between, a black guy was elected President. There is a book out there called All Things Possible-- written by Kurt Warner. That title has never been more true than now.

            Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Orlando Magic at San Antonio Spurs (-3, 185)

The Magic look to improve the NBA's best road record as they meet the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday night in a matchup between division leaders that have been two of the league's hottest teams lately.

Orlando (29-8) has won 16 of its 19 home games, including 11 in a row for its longest home winning streak since taking 12 straight from March 10-April 15, 2006.

The Southeast Division-leading Magic extended their current run Friday night with a 121-87 rout of division rival Atlanta. Hedo Turkoglu made all five of his 3-point attempts and led six players in double figures with 21 points as the Magic pulled into a tie for the most wins in the league.

The Magic are 7-2 in road games and 14-4 overall against the Western Conference. However, they've lost 14 of their last 16 in San Antonio, including 128-110 on Nov. 21, 2007.

They'll likely have their hands full Sunday with the Southwest Division-leading Spurs (24-11), who have rebounded from a slow start with 22 wins in their last 28 games. San Antonio had five players with at least 11 points as it cruised to a 106-84 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday, its ninth victory in 10 games.

After getting held to 16 points in the first quarter, the Spurs outscored the Clippers 90-62 the rest of the way.

The slow start to the season was primarily due to ankle injuries that kept Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker out of 12 and nine games, respectively. San Antonio, though, can't claim injuries as an excuse for its 90-78 loss in Orlando on Dec. 18.

All three of the Spurs' top players were healthy for that game, but Tim Duncan was 7-for-17, Parker was 3-for-17 and Ginobili was 4-for-12 as the Magic held the Spurs to a season-low 37.5 percent shooting.

            Pick: Spurs

Miami Heat at Los Angeles Lakers (-11, 203)

On one side, there is a player that can seemingly score at will in Kobe Bryant. On the other, the league's top scorer in Dwyane Wade.

Both are coming off spectacular late-game shooting heroics on Friday night that led their respective teams to victories.

But on Sunday night, one of the two superstars will come up short as Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers host Wade and the Miami Heat in the teams' second meeting this season.

Los Angeles (29-6) goes for its third straight overall victory following a 121-119 win over Indiana on Friday that improved the Lakers to 19-2 at home this season.

Despite cold shooting to open the fourth quarter, Bryant scored the Lakers' final 11 points, including the game-winning fadeaway jumper with three seconds left. Bryant had 36 points, a season-high 13 assists and seven rebounds.

"I just played the game and made (the Pacers) make decisions," said Bryant, averaging 27.7 points and 6.7 assists as the Lakers have won three straight over Miami in Los Angeles. "In the fourth quarter, you just have to stay home a little more ... but I had shots in the past, like the one in Miami that felt good, but it came in and out. So I made sure that one stayed down."

The shot in Miami he was referring to was a jumper at the buzzer that rimmed out in the Lakers' 89-87 loss on Dec. 19.

Since that defeat, though, Los Angeles has won eight of 10. Bryant is averaging 32.3 points, 5.5 boards and 5.1 assists during that stretch.

Lamar Odom, who averaged 17.1 points and 9.7 rebounds with Miami in 2003-04, missed his second straight game on Friday after suffering a bone bruise in his right knee in Tuesday's 116-105 loss to New Orleans. Lakers coach Phil Jackson would not speculate on when the 10-year forward would return.

            Pick: Over

Nashville Predators at Chicago Blackhawks (-239, 5.5)

Over the past two games, the Nashville Predators seem to have found their missing scoring touch, just as the Chicago Blackhawks have lost theirs.

The finale of a home-and-home series Sunday at the United Center again matches the Predators (19-19-3), who have nine goals in consecutive wins, against the Blackhawks (22-10-7), who have scored twice in back-to-back losses.

Behind another strong performance from converted center David Legwand, Nashville won 4-1 at home on Saturday.

Legwand scored a pair of goals in the victory, giving him three goals and an assist in two games since moving to the left side.

Before Thursday's 5-3 win against Pittsburgh, the Predators had averaged 1.65 goals over their previous 17 games, and 2.33 for the season.

"The goals are coming from playing the game the right way offensively and defensively," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "We are getting goals because we are forechecking well and creating turnovers. We are getting goals because we are going to the net hard. We are making good decisions and shooting the puck. Those are all of the things we have been practicing and preaching."

Along with Legwand, defenseman Ryan Suter has four points in his last three games - a goal and three assists. Joel Ward has three assists in the last two, and another defenseman, Greg Zanon, has contributed a goal and two assists.

The return of Steve Sullivan could give the offense a further boost. The former ********* made his first appearance since Feb. 22, 2007 on Saturday, playing 12:30 and taking three shots.

Back problems that required two disc operations caused Sullivan to miss the team's previous 153 contests, but when healthy, the winger reached the 60-point mark in consecutive seasons and scored at least 22 goals in 2005-06 and 2006-07. In 151 games with Nashville, Sullivan has 62 goals and 158 points.

Pekka Rinne is likely to make his second consecutive start after he turned aside 34 of 35 shots on Saturday. Rinne is 2-0-0 with a .945 save percentage in two career starts against the Blackhawks.

Nashville center Jason Arnott is doubtful for Sunday after he left Saturday's game with a lower body injury.

                      Pick: Over 5.5

New Jersey Devils at Anaheim Ducks (-137, 5.5)

New Jersey is coming off a 5-1 victory over Los Angeles on Friday in the opener of its six-game road trip. After going 0-for-7 on the power play in a 4-0 loss to Atlanta on Thursday, the Devils (24-14-3) matched a season high with three man-advantage goals on Saturday.

Travis Zajac scored his first goal in seven games and added two assists while Patrik Elias, Jamie Langenbrunner and All-Star Zach Parise all had a goal and an assist against the Kings. Parise's goal was his team-leading 23rd and 100th of his career.

"We made it real simple tonight," Langenbrunner said. "We shot it quickly and didn't waste time trying to set up the perfect play."

In his first start since Dec. 13, Kevin Weekes made 34 saves. He won his last start against Anaheim - a 30-save effort with the New York Rangers in a 4-3 overtime victory on Nov. 1, 2006. Devils goalie Scott Clemmensen has never faced the Ducks.

In the teams' last meeting in Anaheim, the Ducks won 4-2 on Nov. 24, 2006.

                      Pick: New Jersey +127
