                    Weekend's six-pack

Some baseball knowledge to warm up a gloomy, overcast weekend

-- Randy Johnson has hit 188 hitters in his career, 25 more than any other active pitcher (Wakefield 163/PMartinez 137).

-- Jason Kendall has been hit by a pitch 231 times, 63 more times than Carlos Delgado, 74 more than Jason Giambi.

-- Omar Vizquel has 239 career sacrifice bunts; the next four active players on the list are all pitchers; Juan Pierre (101) has next most sac bunts of active position players.

-- Greg Maddux, in his tremendous career, faced 20,421 batters.

-- Tom Glavine has faced 4,173 batters in his career who either got a walk, struck out or were hit by a pitch. Thats 4,173 batters who never hit a fair ball of Glavine, who wasn't/isn't a strikeout pitcher.

-- The object of baseball is to score runs; Ken Griffey Jr has 1,612 runs scored, more than any other active player.

Saturday's List of 13: Things we take for granted that aren't as old as you might think........

                      13) Remote controls-- Yes, there was a time when you had to get up to change the channel. Watched a lot more commercials back then.

                      12) NFL passer ratings-- This often-quoted statistic is a long formula that no one knows exactly-- it favors guys who throw short, low-risk passes. Any passing stat where Dan Fouts ranks 42nd for his career isn't an improvement over what was there previously.

                      11) Poker on TV-- Its easy to make fun of, but its also a great study of how to react/not to react to good/bad luck-- imagine your life being totally different because the card on top of the deck is a heart and not another suit. Keeping calm amidst chaos like that in a gift.

                      10) The button that you push to find your car in the parking lot: This is especially useful with rental vehicles, just don't push the button by accident late at night in your own driveway. Neighbors won't like it.

                      9) Arena Football-- Its been around since mid-80's, was even here in Albany for a decade or so, but they're taking 2009 off, because of the financial crisis-- how else would Kurt Warner have played football here in America's second favorite city? Iowa Barnstormers he played once beat Albany Firebirds 77-76 in a prototypical Arena game.

                      8) Cellphones-- Huge change. Go into a bar now, and guaranteed you will see a few people either talking on phone, texting, or taking pics on their cameraphone. Malls are even worse. Should definitely have a little stock in the cellphone companies.

                      7) ESPN, Weather Channel-- Specialty channels that were scoffed at in early days are now basic cable staples. Who would have thought a guy who goes to weather-related disasters (Jim Cantore) would be a celebrity brought in to do weather on NFL playoff pre-game shows?

                      6) 21-year old drinking age-- We need to change this; when I was 18, the legal drinking age was 18. Hey, if you're old enough to go over to Iraq and serve in the military, you're old enough to have a beer.

                      5) AAU basketball-- Back in the dark ages (my childhood) you went to the playground and played pickup; organized summer ball really didn't exist. Now, kids can play all spring/summer if they want, but would they better off playing less, practicing more? I sound old.......

                      4) Arthroscopic surgery-- Guys get operated on and are back really quickly now, the advances in medical science have really helped with getting athletes back ready to play.

                      3) NFL Sunday Ticket, Full Court package, Extra Innings package-- There was a day where I wouldn't see box scores of A's games until 4:00 the next afternoon; now, I can watch most every game live, and that’s a really good thing. Now, if we could just get the NFL package on digital cable, that would be terrific........

                      2) Late-night TV-- Before cable TV, maybe 1972 and earlier, TV was off the air after the Tonight Snow, around 12:30 or 1am. Now, if you are so inclined, you can watch movies/reruns/news shows all nite, not that I know anyone who does that......

                      1) Internet-- Possibly the greatest invention since the wheel; there is no end to the list of things this has changed in the world, mostly for the better. It wasn't that long ago the internet didn't even exist.

                      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
