    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, January 9

The NBA has a dozen games on the schedule for Friday, while the NFL approaches its second postseason weekend. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Ravens opened at 125/1 odds to win Super Bowl XLIII, but a resurgent 2008 campaign and a playoff win last weekend has that line down to just 10/1 heading into the Divisional Round. The Giants remain the Super Bowl favorites at 2/1, with the Steelers behind them at 7/2, and the Titans third at 4/1. The Panthers then sit at 9/2, with the Chargers at 11/2, and the Eagles at 7/1. Rounding out the Super Bowl odds list are the Cardinals, who opened at 45/1 and now sit at 25/1.

The Giants are also the favorites to win their respective conference championship, as they are pegged at EVEN odds to claim the NFC title. The Panthers are behind them at 2/1 odds in the NFC, followed by the Eagles at 7/2, and the Cardinals at 12/1. Over in the AFC the Steelers are the conference championship favorites at 7/4, with the Titans at 2/1, and the Chargers at 3/1. The Ravens opened well back on that list too (60/1), but they're now sitting at 9/2.

    Other Notable Events

Coming off an 89-85 loss to the Rockets at home on Wednesday night, the Celtics will take their show back on the road for a game in Cleveland against the Cavaliers on Friday. Paul Pierce had a team-high 26 points for Boston in that loss, which dropped the Celtics' record to 29-8 on the season. Cleveland throttled Charlotte for a 111-81 win Wednesday, with LeBron James cruising to 21 points.

Houston will be looking to blast the Thunder in Oklahoma City on Friday in one of the other 11 games on the NBA's schedule. Also on tap: Memphis at Toronto, Charlotte at Philadelphia, Atlanta at Orlando, the Clippers at New Orleans, New Jersey at Milwaukee, Washington at Chicago, Detroit at Denver, Miami at Sacramento, Dallas at Phoenix, and then finally the Lakers hosting the Pacers.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are just five games on the ice on Friday, including the Rangers on the road in Buffalo; New York was blasted 6-3 by the Canadiens in their last game on Wednesday night, while the Sabres are coming off a 4-2 win over the Senators. Also on the schedule: Columbus at Washington, San Jose at Edmonton, and St. Louis at Vancouver, while Tampa Bay will head west for a contest in Anaheim.

Finally, a light Friday for college hoops includes Rider at Siena and Santa Clara at St. Mary's, while Ohio State will be at home for a game versus Houston Baptist.

    News from the Wire

Warriors forward Brandan Wright suffered a partial shoulder dislocation on Wednesday night and will be questionable for the weekend . . . recently-signed forward Mats Sundin made his debut for the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night . . . Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson is expected to miss this weekend's playoff game with his groin injury . . . the Browns have quickly moved to fill their head coaching position, inking Eric Mangini to turn the team around.

    A Peek at the Future

The Rockets play again on Saturday, as they'll play host to New York in one of six NBA games on the schedule; other notable matchups include Detroit at Utah and Golden State at Portland . . . there are two matchups of ranked teams on the college hoops schedule for Saturday - No. 23 Louisville vs. No. 18 Villanova, and No. 25 West Virginia vs. fellow No. 18 Marquette; both games start at 12pm ET.

      Six-pack for Friday

Coaching moves from footballscoop.com, a website coaches read all the time, looking for new jobs.......

-- USC named Rocky Seto defensive coordinator, Ken Norton Jr. assistant head coach/defense. Trojans have lost lot of assistants the last few years, but keep on winning.

-- Former Saints' OC Carl Smith is Trojans' new QB coach, and will likely call plays for USC next season.

-- Cowboys hired Joe DeCammillis (Dan Reeves' son-in-law) as its new special teams coach.

-- Oklahoma State WR coach Trooper Taylor, who had also been with Tennessee, has joined the new coaching staff at Auburn.

-- Ted Roof moves from DC at Minnesota to same post at Auburn, meaning he's gone from HC at Duke to Minnesota to Auburn in the last two years. Would love to be a realtor for some of these guys.

-- Minnesota OC Mike Dunbar resigned, meaning Gophers, after a great turnaround season, will have two new coordinators in '09.

Friday's List of 13: Our college basketball List of 13.......

This is not a ranking of teams, just some interesting things that caught my attention over the last week or so.........

        13) Arizona-- Looking like they'll be playing in preliminary round of Pac-10 tourney, with both Oregon schools and Washington State. It is going to be interesting to see who they hire as coach next spring.

        12) Big East-- Nine of top 36 in kenpom.com ratings are in Big East. Hard to believe all nine won't make the NCAAs. Georgetown is 1-2 in conference play, but is still ranked 5th in country.

        11) ACC-- Georgia Tech (99th) is lowest-rated team of 12 teams in the ACC; five of the 16 Big East teams are ranked 103rd or lower.

        10) VMI plays fastest-paced games in country, 80.3 possessions a game; North Carolina is 4th, Pat Knight's Texas Tech team is 6th.

        9) Duke, West Virginia, Memphis are three best defensive teams in country, according to kenpom.com. NC-Wilmington, which usually has a good team (not this year), is the worst defensive team.

        8) Arizona State has best adjusted FG%, which means they get good shots the most often, a huge thing; three of the top 10 teams in this important stat are from Utah (Utah State/BYU/Utah).

        7) Poor Northern Arizona; in their last three losses, they led by 10-16-13 points; they just can't finish games, but they're close. Close doesn't get you anything, though, except a headache.

        6) Lot of this is coincidence, but Cincinnati-Kansas St-West Virginia are #'s 1-2-4 in offensive rebounding %. Bob Huggins has been out of Cincinnati for while now, and he's two years removed from K-State, but still, its an odd coincidence. He does instill toughness in teams.

        5) Akron, Nebraska, West Virginia create highest rate of turnovers in their games; East Carolina and Brown create the least.

        4) There are ten teams in country who get 40%+ of their scoring on 3-pointers; last year, there were only nine, so moving the arc back a few inches hasn't created that much of an impact.

        3) Xavier gets 29.2% of its points from foul line, highest % in nation. This means they get ball to good spots and get foes in foul trouble. Toledo (12.6%) gets the least % of points from charity stripe.

        2) Gonzaga-- Of the top 20 teams in kenpom.com ratings, Bulldogs are only team in country whose is strength of schedule is above 80th. Gonzaga has played the 13th-hardest schedule to date.

        1) Washington's Jon Brockman had 19 points, 18 boards, including a putback hoop with 0:04.5 left, as Huskies beat Stanford 84-83 in a terrific game Thursday night. Have to be happy for Washington fans, who have had dismal luck with the pro teams in Seattle recently.

Boston Celtics at Cleveland Cavaliers [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Celtics: Boston is going through its worst stretch since two seasons ago, dropping six of eight to fall two games behind Cleveland in the loss column. This following the best start in NBA history at 27-2 that included a franchise-record 19-game winning streak. Critics believe the Celtics have hit a wall after winning the NBA championship while insiders warn that this team seems to be at its best with doubters. “That’s not a bad test for us,” Boston head coach Doc Rivers said. “It’s going to be a tough game. They’re playing unbelievable basketball. Maybe it will be something to get us going. Who knows?”

Celtics are 5-16-2 ATS in the last 23 meetings.
The UNDER is 9-3 in Boston's last 12 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - G Tony Allen (ankle) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 86 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Cavs (-4, O/U 183): Cleveland lost 90-85 at Boston in the season opener but has responded by going a perfect 18-0 at home and hopes that will eventually lead to home-court advantage in the playoffs. “They got us up there,” Cavs guard Mo Williams said. “It’s our turn. It’s payback time.” Boston's Paul Pierce realizes Cleveland is playing with revenge as well. “This is the team we put out of the playoffs,” Pierce said. “They are the best home team in all of basketball, so they have been looking forward to this. When you play in a game like this, teams like us want to try to find the edge because we know somewhere down the road we’re going to see them in the playoffs."

Cavs are 20-7 ATS in their last 27 home games.
Cavs are 3-6 SU in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - C Zydrunas Ilgauskas (ankle) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 90

Dallas Mavericks at Phoenix Suns [ESPN | 10:30 PM ET]

              Mavs:

Mavs are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 road games.
The OVER is 15-7 in Dallas' last 22 games vs. Pacific Division.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

              Suns (NA):

Suns are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 7-3 in Phoenix's last 10 games vs. Western Conference.

Key Injuries - C Shaquille O'Neal (back) is questionable.

                Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Orlando Magic (-5.5, 192)

Just two days ago, Orlando squeaked out a road victory over the Hawks. But don’t expect the same outcome Friday.

Atlanta is just 7-9 straight up (SU) on the road but is 6-2 against the spread (ATS) in its last eight road contests.

Luckily for the Hawks, they will only have the bad taste of their most recent loss to the Magic in their mouths until Friday.

There is no doubt that the Hawks are looking for revenge Friday.

“We just didn’t shoot the ball well,” Mike Bibby told reporters. “It happens. The good thing is we’ve got them Friday in Orlando. We let one get away here.”

Even Magic coach Stan Van Gundy expects a tough tilt Friday.

“Tonight, they missed,” Van Gundy told reporters. “I don't anticipate they’ll do that two nights in a row. When they play us Friday, it could be a tough night.”

The Hawks are 3-1 ATS in their last four stops at the Magic Kingdom.

                Pick: Magic -5.5

Boston Celtics at Cleveland Cavaliers (-4, 183)

It’s the biggest game of the night. Everyone will be tuning in to watch.

It’s the perfect scenario for the Celtics to prove that they are still the beasts of the East.

Boston has not been playing its best basketball recently. It has lost six of its last eight. But let’s not forget, this is the same club that won 19 straight contests.

Boston forward Kevin Garnett knows his team can get back on track with a victory over the conference-leading Cavaliers.

“Nobody said it was going to be easy,” Garnett told reporters after Wednesday’s home loss to the Houston Rockets. “I know, at times, we do make it look easy. We are a very, very confident team. ... I feel we have the mind-set to weather the storm.”

Boston is the underdog Wednesday for just the fourth time this year. Luckily for the Celtics, the underdog is 10-4-1 ATS in the last 15 meetings between them and the Cavaliers.

                Pick: Boston

                              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Blues at Vancouver Canucks (-230, 5.5)

The Mats Sundin era has officially begun in Vancouver. The Canucks showcased their newest player during Wednesday’s 4-2 win over the Oilers.

Coach Alain Vigneault gave the 37-year-old Swede 15 minutes of ice time including a couple stints on the second power-play unit, but Sundin finished the contest pointless.

“Physically, I felt better than I was hoping. It’s good to get that first game out of the way,” the former Leafs captain told reporters.

The four goals is an offensive outburst for a Canucks club that’s having a hard time putting the puck in the net. Vigneault hopes that the line of Kyle Wellwood, Mason Raymond and Sundin will give his offense an added jolt.

A matchup against the Blues should help Sundin and his linemates get on the score sheet.

The Blues have only three wins over their last 10 outings. They’ve also lost six of their last eight games against the Canucks.

                              Pick: Vancouver -230

Tampa Bay Lightning at Anaheim Ducks (-170, 5.5)

It’s been a rough rookie campaign for Tampa Bay forward Steven Stamkos. He lit up the Ontario Hockey League with 100 goals over a two-year stay with Sarnia and was thought to be a no-brainer No. 1 pick.

After being fired at the beginning of the season, former Lightning coach Barry Melrose said the prized prospect didn’t belong on a pro roster.

“It has probably not been the best start I had envisioned for myself and the team,” Stamkos told the National Post last week. “It’s definitely been an adjustment coming from the juniors and I have learned a lot so far.”

The learning process is far from complete for Stamkos. He has only 14 points in 39 games this season and is carrying an ugly minus 10 rating.

Stamkos and the Lightning will be playing their second game in as many nights after playing the Coyotes in Phoenix Thursday night.

Look for the Ducks to take advantage of a tired and defensively-inept T.B. club.

                              Pick: Ducks -170
