    Trends and Indexes

    Monday, January 5

Good Luck on day #5 of 2009!

For College Football and the NFL, watch for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Bowl Season Trends and Indexes 12/20 through 1/8”
    • “NFL Divisional Playoffs Trends and Indexes 1/10 and 1/11"

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, and the NHL until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.
Any opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the posting member or BettorsChat.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, January 5

Colt McCoy and his Texas Longhorns will be seeking a Fiesta Bowl win over the Ohio State Buckeyes Monday night. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Texas Longhorns will have chips on their collective shoulders when they hit University of Phoenix Stadium for the Fiesta Bowl on Monday night. The Longhorns went 11-1 straight-up (9-3 against-the-spread) during the regular season, but a loss to Texas Tech in early November kept them out of the BCS Championship despite the fact they beat Oklahoma in October. Texas will be looking to send a message to voters by pounding their Monday night opponent.

And that opponent is Ohio State, who went 10-2 SU but just 5-6 ATS this season. The Buckeyes' national title hopes took a hit back in September when they were trounced by Southern Cal, and a loss to Penn State in late October doomed them to the Fiesta Bowl. As well, the oddsmakers have made Ohio State the underdogs for Monday, as Texas is favored by 8 points (with the total at 51.5). The Buckeyes went 5-6 on the OVER/UNDER, while the Longhorns were 5-6-1.

    Other Notable Events

The Spurs will be looking to run their winning streak to three games on Monday night when they play on the road against the Heat. San Antonio (22-11 SU, 15-17-1 ATS) is coming off a 108-106 win over the Sixers on Saturday, with Tim Duncan scoring 26 points and adding 12 boards. Miami (18-14 SU, 14-17-1 ATS) toppled New Jersey 101-96 last time out, getting 29 points from Dwyane Wade.

The Nuggets will be looking to pick up their fourth win in a row on Monday when they host the Pacers; they're 23-12 SU and 19-15-1 ATS. Rounding out the NBA slate: Sacramento at New Jersey, Toronto at Milwaukee, and Golden State at Utah.

    The Rest of the Schedule

No. 11 Georgetown and No. 7 Notre Dame will meet in South Bend on Monday night in a battle of ranked college hoops teams. The only other ranked team in action will be No. 4 Oklahoma, who should get a laugher vs. MD Eastern Shore.

And finally, there are just two NHL games on tap for Monday night, with the Islanders at Edmonton, and Pittsburgh at the Rangers. The Penguins were embarrassed 6-1 by the Panthers last time out, with Ruslan Fedotenko scoring the lone Pittsburgh goal and Marc-Andre Fleury stopping just nine of 12 shots before getting yanked. Pittsburgh is sitting at just 3-7-0 over their last 10 games.

    News from the Wire

With Wild Card Weekend in the books the NFL has released the schedule for the second round of the playoffs - Saturday will have Baltimore at Tennessee (4:30pm ET) and Arizona at Carolina (8:15pm ET), while Sunday will feature Philadelphia at the Giants (1:00pm ET) and San Diego at Pittsburgh (4:45pm ET) . . . Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson missed the second half of the team's win over the Colts with a groin injury, and is questionable for this week.

    A Peek at the Future

Tuesday's top NBA matchup has New Orleans in Los Angeles to take on the Lakers, while Boston will play in Charlotte and Orlando will host Washington . . . Ball State will take on Tulsa in the GMAC Bowl on Tuesday night (kickoff 8:00pm ET), with the Golden Hurricane pegged as 3-point favorites . . . Florida is a 3.5-point favorite for Thursday night's BCS Championship Game against Oklahoma.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- Miami Dolphin owner Wayne Huizenga said Sunday that Bill Parcells will stay with the Dolphins next year, even though he can opt out of his contract and still get paid in full.

-- Looks like Patriots will put the franchise tag on Matt Cassel, a subtle confirmation of Tom Brady's rehab problems, and sets up a fascinating scenario if Brady sits '09 out and Cassel plays well.

-- Jeff Fisher once broke his leg while returning a punt for Chicago, when he was tackled by Eagle special teamer Bill Cowher.

-- I'd love to see the NFL adopt the college rule that if you run the opponents' 2-point conversion back for a TD, you get two points.

-- Arizona's run of consecutive NCAA tournaments isn't going to get extended this year; they're 0-4 on the road and look lost.

-- With North Carolina's loss, West Virginia assumed the top spot in the computerized kenpom.com rankings. No way are they best team in the country, but they have played a tough schedule.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

        13) Strange doings in Boston Sunday, after Boston College shocked the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill (I seriously thought they were going to go unbeaten this season), word came out that BC administrators have threatened football coach Jaff Jagodzinski that he'll be fired should he go to his interview for Jets' head coaching job Monday.

        12) According to reports, Jagodzinski is going to the interview, so it looks like former East Carolina coach Steve Logan (he is current BC offensive coordinator) will get hired as Eagles' new head coach. Wow.

        11) What does it say about NFL officiating this season that the crew of Ed Hochuli graded out #1 in the league, even after the debacle out in Denver in Week 2, when an inadvertent whistle cost the Chargers a huge game? Hochuli worked a playoff game this weekend, so his crew was downgraded because of that error, but still..........

        10) If you're old enough to remember Pat Haden butchering playoff games for the Rams in the 70's, then you must have had a flashback Sunday, watching Chad Pennington play against Baltimore. They're the same player, thirty years apart- they even look alike.

        9) To listen to certain former players who now give their opinions on TV, you'd think Andy Reid benching Donovan McNabb for second half of the Baltimore game in Week 12 was the greatest injustice since the '72 Olympic basketball game. Well, McNabb was 10-23 for 73 yards and two INTs in that game, and Eagles are 5-1 since that game, so maybe the move actually sparked both McNabb and the Eagles.

Isn't that what coaches are supposed to do?

        8) For those of you who hate football in domes, gametime temp for the Eagle-Viking game was 2 degrees, with a windchill of 14 below.

        7) I guess I'm surprised they don't have Sunday nite playoff games.

        6) If there is any justice in this world, Jim Mora get royalties every time his "PLAYOFFS!?!?!?!" rant get used on TV these days.

        5) Switching to hoops, total shock over Boston College pulling upset in Chapel Hill Sunday night- they were 22-point underdogs. Just a guess, but Tar Heels won't stay in ACC cellar too long.

        4) If I coached either Kentucky or Louisville, wouldn't want a rivalry game like that so close to start of conference play. I realize that TV probably chooses when the game is played, but December seems like a much better time to play such an intense game.

        3) I am 100% convinced those who announce Big East basketball are coached to pump up the league, as if all 16 teams are one step away from the NBA. You watch all these other games, and no one else in any other league dishes out propaganda like the Big East. Well, with 16 teams, you're going to have some stiffs-- St John's, South Florida, DePaul, Rutgers, Seton Hall, and to a degree Providence are stiffs.

        2) Lets say Cincinnati finishes 10th in the Big East- they're OK, but not a great team, a bubble team for sure. Should a team that finishes 10th in its league be allowed to compete for a national title? There are leagues that don't even have ten teams in them. I'm guessing they are going to get nine teams in (top nine are all ranked in top 27) NCAAs.

        1) When I was a kid, today was my least favorite day of the year, the first day back to school after Christmas vacation- it was way worse than the first day of school-- at least the weather was good then. But six weeks of school before the next vacation? Absolutely hated it.

San Antonio Spurs at Miami Heat [7:30 PM ET]

Spurs: San Antonio has won eight of its last nine games and owns a 9-2 mark against Miami with Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker in the lineup. That wasn't the case earlier in the season when the Spurs were routed 99-83 at home by the Heat. Parker sprained his ankle early in that game as fell to 1-4. "I don't know what it is," Duncan said at the time. "I don't know what to say." San Antonio has won 14 of 19 since November 28th when all three were finally back on the court together.

Spurs are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 road games.
The UNDER is 19-7 in San Antonio's last 26 games vs. Southeast Division.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Heat (NA): Miami already has three more wins than all of last season thanks to the resurgence of star Dwayne Wade, who is leading the NBA with 28.8 points per game. Wade did it again in helping the Heat rally back from a 16-point deficit against the Nets on Saturday, scoring 29 points and blocking four shots in a 101-96 overtime win. “In the second half, Dwyane Wade displayed his dominance again,” Nets guard Keyon Dooling said. “He carried them to the mountaintop. He’s incredible. He’s amazing.”

Heat are 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.
The UNDER is 15-2 in the last 17 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Shawn Marion (back) is questionable.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                  Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at Denver Nuggets (-8, 225.5)

Monday begins a five-game road trip for the Pacers, who are 5-12 away from Conseco Fieldhouse. Indiana, though, has won three of its last four road games.

The Pacers are trying to win their third straight, which would match a season high. They're coming off a 122-117 victory over Sacramento on Saturday, as Danny Granger scored 13 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter and made all six of his free throws in the final 1:30.

Granger, among the NBA's top scorers at 25.1 points per game, has averaged 29.0 in the last four contests. He was 10-of-20 from the field Saturday and had six rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots.

"I'm in awe right now, but it's important not to be a spectator when he gets the ball," Indiana center Roy Hibbert said of Granger. "Down the clock, I'm not worried when the ball is in his hands."

The Pacers' back-to-back wins came after they lost four in a row by a combined 12 points.

"Games that we have lost we know we could have won," Granger said, "and I feel this is a good beginning for this year."

Also giving the Pacers reason for optimism despite sitting in the Central Division cellar is Mike Dunleavy, who's close to making his 2008-09 debut. Dunleavy, Indiana's second-leading scorer last season at 19.1 points per game, hasn't played yet due to soreness in his right knee.

He could return by the end of this trip.

"When you have two 20-point scorers, it makes the offense a lot better," Granger said.

                  Pick: Indiana +8

Golden State Warriors at Utah Jazz (-11.5, 219)

The Utah Jazz have enjoyed over three years of home dominance against Golden State.

Much lesser teams have been able to defend their home courts versus the Warriors this past week.

The struggling Jazz look to get a boost from a game against the Warriors at EnergySolutions Arena as the teams start their season series Monday night.

Losers of four of six, Utah (19-15) is in need of a spark and a home game against Golden State (10-25) could get it back on track.

The Jazz have won eight straight at home versus the Warriors, including three games en route to winning a Western Conference semifinal series in 2007. Golden State's last win at Utah was on Nov. 25, 2005, 94-90.

Last season, the Jazz averaged 123.0 points en route to winning all three of their contests against the Warriors, shooting 58.1 percent (25-for-43) from 3-point range.

Golden State, allowing 111.3 points per game, appears to be in no shape to stop Utah this time, either.

The Warriors have been particularly bad in their last two games, allowing an average of 111.0 points in road losses to Oklahoma City and Minnesota - teams with a combined 12-55 record.

                  Pick: Over 219
