    Trends and Indexes

    Friday, January 2

Good Luck on day #2 of 2009!

For College Football and the NFL, look for threads:

    • “NCAAF Bowl Season Trends and Indexes 12/20 through 1/8”
    • “NFL Wild Card Trends and Indexes 1/3 and 1/4"

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, and the NHL until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.
Any opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the posting member or BettorsChat.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, January 2

The Sugar Bowl featuring Utah and Alabama is the highlight of a Friday sports schedule that includes plenty of NBA. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Alabama and their 12-1 record (9-4 against-the-spread) has to settle for a date with Utah in the Sugar Bowl at the Superdome Friday night thanks to their late-season loss to rival Florida. Of course, the Utes would have liked to have had a shot at the national championship as well, since they went 12-0 (7-3-1 ATS) this season. Still, the oddsmakers think Alabama will walk all over Utah in this contest, as they've been pegged as 9.5-point favorites. The total is listed at 45.5.

The first game on the schedule for Friday sees Mississippi (8-4 SU, 8-3 ATS) taking on Texas Tech (11-1 SU, 5-4-1 ATS) in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas at 2:00pm ET. That's followed by a less glamorous matchup, with Kentucky (6-6 SU, 4-7 ATS) meeting East Carolina (9-4 SU, 5-8 ATS) in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis at 5:00pm ET. Texas Tech is pegged as a 4.5-point favorite in the first game, with the total at 69.5. East Carolina is favored by 3, with that total at 41.5.

    Other Notable Events

The NBA returns with a vengeance on Friday night, with all 30 teams in action. The Celtics will get to ease into their January schedule on Friday with a home game against the Wizards; Boston has lost just five games so far this season, while Washington has won just six to sit with the worst record in the conference.

The Lakers, meanwhile, will get a tough visit from the Jazz on Friday as they look to improve on their 25-5 record. The rest of the busy slate: Houston at Toronto, Miami at Orlando, Indiana at New York, Atlanta at New Jersey, Chicago at Cleveland, San Antonio at Memphis, Golden State at Minnesota, Sacramento at Detroit, Denver at Oklahoma City, Charlotte at Milwaukee, Philadelphia at Dallas, and the Clippers at Phoenix, while New Orleans will be on the road in Portland.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The NHL stages just a half-dozen games on Friday, including Philadelphia on the road in Anaheim. The Flyers picked up a 3-2 win in Vancouver on Tuesday night behind a 29-save performance from Martin Biron, but lost forward Simon Gagne to an injury early in the game. The other five games on the ice: St. Louis at Carolina, Montreal at New Jersey, Columbus at Colorado, and the Islanders at Phoenix, while the Canucks will travel to Atlanta to do battle with the Thrashers.

Finally, there are five ranked college hoops teams in action on Friday, including No. 8 Texas looking for a blowout win against Appalachian State. As well, it's No. 12 UCLA vs. Oregon State, No. 13 Syracuse vs. South Florida, and No. 17 Arizona State vs. Stanford, while No. 19 Baylor has a game with South Carolina.

    News from the Wire

Andre Smith won't be on the field for the Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl; the star offensive tackle was suspended for breaking "unspecified team rules" . . . ousted Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan is already popping up as a candidate to fill some of the many vacancies around the league . . . Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo was named the league's Defensive Rookie of the Year.

    A Peek at the Future

After Friday there are just four more bowl games on the schedule, with the International Bowl (Buffalo vs. Connecticut) on January 3, the Fiesta Bowl (Ohio State vs. Texas) on January 5, the GMAC Bowl (Ball State vs. Tulsa) on January 6, and the BCS Championship Game (Florida vs. Oklahoma) on January 8 . . . Saturday's NFL Wild Card matchups currently have Atlanta -2.5 at Arizona and Indianapolis -1 at San Diego. Sunday's games are listed as Baltimore -3 at Miami, and Philadelphia -3 at Minnesota . . . the top NBA games on Saturday feature Houston on the road in Atlanta, and Denver playing host to New Orleans.

      Six-pack for Friday

Some notes about Don Larsen, who threw the only perfect game in World Series history, back in 1956.

-- Two years before the perfect game, Larsen was 3-21 pitching for the Orioles, after being 7-12 the year before.

-- Larsen was traded from Baltimore to Bronx in a bizarre 17-player trade that included very few recognizable names. You don't see lot of stuff like that anymore.

-- How baseball has changed; in his 3-21 season, Larsen tossed 12 complete games in his 28 starts. Cole Hamels has four complete games in his 84 career starts, and he has a 38-23 record.

-- He was traded to the A's in 1959, in a 7-player swap that sent Roger Maris to the Bronx. Hank Bauer and Marv Throneberry also went to Kansas City in the deal. Maris hit 61 HRs two years later. Throneberry played for the 42-120 Mets three years later.

-- Larsen wasn't a bad hitter, with a .242 career batting average and 14 home runs. Remember, the DH didn't start until 1973.

-- Larsen wound up pitching for seven different teams, including the '62 Giants, who lost Game 7 of World Series. Larsen saved 11 games for the Giants that season, and won a World Series game.

Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

        13) The two Washington schools might be awful, but the rest of the Pac-10 kicked butt this bowl season, going 5-0, with wins ranging all over the map, from Oregon State's unwatchable 3-0 win in Sun Bowl, to USC's pasting of Penn State in Pasadena. Very impressive.

        12) Tough times for Big 11, with Iowa the only bowl winner so far in this bowl season. Yes, it seemed weird without Michigan in a bowl.

        11) Kid on Clemson made one of the great defensive plays you'll ever see in Tigers' loss to Nebraska; he deflected an option pitch, scooped the ball up and ran it in for the first touchdown of the game. You do not see plays that great very often.

        10) Was fun listening to Dan Fouts/Steve Beuerlein on Gator Bowl-- former QBs are like former coaches; because they have to think about the game more than most players, they make better analysts.

        9) Best college hoop game of new year so far was Marquette's 79-72 win vs Villanova Thursday afternoon in Milwaukee. Looking at some of these teams' resumes, that game meant more to Marquette, due to their lower RPI- they might be a bubble team in March, without an impressive showing in Big East play. This was an excellent start.

        8) If you live in the Albany area, MLB Network is channel 621 on digital cable. At first glance, looks like a pretty good operation, but they really won't have much to show before spring training starts.

        7) MLB Network showed Don Larsen's perfect game Thursday nite, which made me curious about Larsen's career- he lasted 14 big league seasons, posting a 91-81 career record. There is some more trivia on his career in the 6-pack posted on top of this page.

        6) They put over 40,000 people in Wrigley Field for Detroit-Chicago hockey game Thursday; this is going to be an annual event, which is going to be in the Bronx next year, for a Rangers-Bruins tilt.

        5) The crawl on bottom of ESPN's screen has changed a lot recently; now you see rumors going across screen, then 20 minutes later, those rumors are often responded to by the people involved. Newspapers are so far out of the news cycle now-- things move very quickly.

        4) Tulsa signed football coach Todd Graham to a 10-year extension to his contract this week; what are the odds that Graham will still be in Tulsa in 2018? Couple of years ago, he signed a 6-year extension with Rice, and quit the Owls for Tulsa three days later.

        3) Oregon State coach Mike Riley was once coach of San Antonio in the old WLAF, team called the Riders that lasted two years. One of his QBs with Riders was Jason Garrett, now offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys. Riley also won two Grey Cups in Canada.

        2) Not only are all four road teams favored in Wild Card round in the NFL this weekend, but two of the four road favorites have a rookie QB, and a rookie head coach. No way that has ever happened before.

        1) Suggestion to make next season's bowls little more interesting; no Big 11 opponents for USC. How about finally ending the drought of 20 years since an SEC team played a Pac-10 team in a bowl? Would you like to see Florida play USC, or Alabama-Oregon? Me, too.

Atlanta Hawks at New Jersey Nets (+3.5, 198.5)

With their play over the last three weeks, the Atlanta Hawks appear to have evolved from a young team with potential to a legitimate contender in the Eastern Conference.

That's due in large part to Joe Johnson, who's made a leap of his own.

After notching their ninth victory in 10 games, Johnson and the Hawks look to win seven straight for the first time in nearly a decade when they visit the New Jersey Nets on Friday night.

Atlanta (21-10) emerged as a much-improved team last spring, when it made the playoffs for the first time in nine years and took eventual NBA champion Boston to seven games in a first-round series.

The Hawks have continued to progress this season, with their only loss in their last 10 games coming by an 88-85 score to the Celtics on Dec. 17. They've won six straight to match their season-opening six-game run, putting them in position to win seven in a row for the first time since April 14-28, 1999.

"I think guys are committed," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said after Atlanta beat Indiana 110-104 on Tuesday night. "We're really working hard on the defensive end, rebounding the basketball and we're sharing it offensively. We're coming up with big plays in the fourth quarter."

Johnson has been largely responsible for the Hawks' ability to close out games. He scored 12 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter Tuesday, including the final five points of the game.

"What can you say? Joe has been huge for us this season," Woodson said. "I put him in the same class as LeBron (James), Kobe (Bryant) - he's playing at that level. He's making big plays for our team, he's making players around him better."

Johnson, the league's ninth-leading scorer at 23.4 points per game, thinks he deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as James, Bryant and some of the NBA's other big stars.

"I don't get treated like that, but I feel like I'm up there in the elite," he said.

Johnson played like one of the league's best in Atlanta's first two games against New Jersey (15-17) this season, averaging 31.5 points while shooting 60.0 percent from the field and 55.6 percent (10-for-18) from 3-point range.

                  Pick: Atlanta -3.5

Charlotte Bobcats at Milwaukee Bucks (-6.5, 182.5)

Consistency has been a big problem for the Milwaukee Bucks, but they've had little problem with that issue against the Charlotte Bobcats.

Milwaukee looks to win its fifth straight over Charlotte as the two meet Friday at the Bradley Center for the first game of a home-and-home series.

After winning five of their previous seven games, the Bucks (15-18) failed to complete a sweep of their two-game road trip in Texas, losing 85-81 at Houston on Wednesday.

"We're trying to maintain things on a consistent basis game by game," said Bucks center Andrew Bogut, who was held to 11 points and nine rebounds after totaling 20 and 14, respectively, in Tuesday's win at San Antonio. "This was a letdown after our last win."

Milwaukee was outrebounded 40-34 and committed 17 turnovers, including six in the second quarter when it scored only 14 points. Michael Redd had 20 points and Luke Ridnour added 11 and 11 assists.

"We were a step slow and just had too many turnovers to overcome," coach Scott Skiles said. "We were sloppy with our offensive execution and it haunted us."

The Bucks split their last four games - all against teams with winning records - and went 3-5 on the road in December. Their schedule in January starts a little easier with four of the first five games at home, and Milwaukee already has beaten Charlotte (11-21) twice this season.

Overall, the Bucks have won four straight and 13 of the 16 all-time meetings against the Bobcats, going 7-1 at the Bradley Center.

                  Pick: Milwaukee -6.5
