There is plenty of action around the sports world leading up to the ball drop on New Year's Eve. Here's a look at the full calendar in your Daily Sports Roundup.

The Gridiron Spotlight

The first bowl game on Wednesday gets underway at 12:00pm ET, with Houston (7-5 straight-up, 4-7 against-the-spread) taking on Air Force (8-4 SU, 7-4 ATS) in the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth. The oddsmakers have Houston pegged as a 3.5-point fave in this game, while the posted total has been steady at 64 points.

Next up is the Sun Bowl at 2:00pm ET, with Pittsburgh (9-3 SU, 6-6 ATS) taking on Oregon State (8-4 SU, 8-4 ATS) in El Paso. Oregon State is listed as a 2.5-point favorite at Sun Bowl Stadium, while the total for the contest is at 51.5 points.

Boston College (9-4 SU, 7-5 ATS) and Vanderbilt (6-6 SU, 7-5 ATS) will then take the field at 3:30pm ET in the Music City Bowl in Nashville. The Eagles might not have the crowd on their side in this one, but the oddsmakers still have them listed as 3.5-point favorites in the game. The total is pegged at just 40.5 points.

At 5:30pm ET we'll then get Kansas (7-5 SU, 6-5 ATS) and Minnesota (7-5 SU, 7-4 ATS) in the Insight Bowl at Tempe's Sun Devil Stadium. This game features the biggest spread on the day, as the oddsmakers have Kansas sitting as an 8.5-point favorite against the Golden Gophers. The total for the game is 58.5 points.

Finally, it'll be LSU (7-5 SU, 2-9 ATS) vs. Georgia Tech (9-3 SU, 8-2 ATS) in the Chick-fil-A Bowl at 7:30pm ET at the Georgia Dome. The ranked Yellow Jackets are 4-point favorites in this contest, while the oddsmakers have the total at 52.5.

Other Notable Events

The Orlando Magic will try to end 2008 on a winning note when they play on the road against the Chicago Bulls in matinee action on Wednesday afternoon (with tipoff at 2:00pm ET). The Magic were knocked off 88-82 on the road by the Pistons on Monday evening despite Dwight Howard's 18 points and 18 rebounds.

There are five other NBA games on the schedule for Wednesday, including a 3:00pm ET contest between the Nets and Pistons in Detroit. As well, it's Milwaukee at Houston, Denver at Toronto, and Golden State at Oklahoma City, while the Sixers and the Clippers will finish the night with a game in Los Angeles.

The Rest of the Schedule

The NHL offers up seven games on Wednesday, including a Panthers/Islanders matchup on Long Island at 2:00pm ET. Rounding out the day's slate: Atlanta at Carolina, Colorado at Phoenix, New Jersey at Dallas, Columbus at Anaheim, Edmonton at Calgary, and San Jose at Minnesota; the Sharks kept on winning on Monday, beating the Stars by a score of 3-1 thanks to two third-period tallies.

Finally, No. 1 North Carolina will try to boost their perfect record to 13-0 by beating Nevada in college hoops action on Wednesday night. Other ranked teams in action Wednesday include No. 3 Pittsburgh vs. Rutgers, No. 5 Duke vs. Loyola MD, No. 7 Notre Dame vs. DePaul, No. 10 Michigan State vs. No. 21 Minnesota, No. 16 Gonzaga vs. Utah, No. 18 Louisville vs. UNLV, No. 22 Xavier vs. Robert Morris, No. 23 Michigan vs. Wisconsin, and No. 24 Ohio State vs. Iowa.

A Peek at the Future

New Year's Day features five more bowl games, including Southern Cal (-9) vs. Penn State in the Rose Bowl. As well, it'll be Cincinnati (-2.5) vs. Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl, Iowa (-4) vs. South Carolina in the Outback Bowl, Clemson (-2.5) vs. Nebraska in the Gator Bowl, and Georgia (-7.5) vs. Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl . . . the NBA doesn't have any games on the schedule for Thursday; the league will return to action on a busy Friday night with 15 games.

Orlando Magic at Chicago Bulls (+6.5, 202)

The Southeast Division-leading Magic look to get their offense back on track and avoid dropping consecutive games for the first time since the opening week of the season on Wednesday when they visit the Chicago Bulls, one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA.

Orlando (24-7) has emerged as one of the favorites in the Eastern Conference, but its offense was punchless in Monday's 88-82 loss to Detroit, snapping a season-high seven-game winning streak. The Magic have won 24 of 29 games since starting the season 0-2 - the only time they've lost back-to-back games in 2008-09.

Orlando was averaging 103.9 points on 47.4 percent shooting from the floor during its winning streak, but was held to a season low in points on 31-of-77 shooting (40.3) Monday. Two-time All-Star center Dwight Howard was limited to one point in the first half, but finished with 18 points and 18 rebounds.

The Magic's offense should be able to bounce back against the Bulls (14-17), who are allowing 102.6 points per game. Orlando is 16-1 when scoring 100 or more points.

The Magic have averaged 105.8 points in winning five straight games over the Bulls, and have also won the last four meetings in Chicago since an 85-76 loss on Nov. 29, 2005.

Denver Nuggets at Toronto Raptors (N/A)

Battling through an elbow injury, Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony struggled with his shot during a three-game losing streak two weeks ago before taking several games off to let his arm heal.

After an auspicious return, Anthony delivered one of his worst shooting performances of the season his last time out.

Anthony and the Nuggets hope to bounce back from another frustrating outing Wednesday night when they try to continue their success against the Toronto Raptors, who are returning home from a taxing six-game road trip.

Denver (20-12) went 16-4 from Nov. 7-Dec. 15, but the Nuggets' hot streak came to an abrupt end when the team dropped three straight from Dec. 16-20. Anthony, who shot a career-best 49.2 percent from the field last season, was 16-for-46 (34.8) during the skid.

The Raptors (12-19) came into this season expecting to fall under that category, but they've lost 12 of their last 16. They're coming off a 12-day road trip during which they lost four of six games, capped by a 117-111 defeat to Golden State on Monday night.

Toronto coach Jay Triano, who's 4-10 since taking over for the fired Sam Mitchell, thinks his team will benefit from a return home.

As relieving as it may be to be back from the extended trip, the Raptors haven't fared much better at home, where they're 5-8 after going 55-27 the previous two seasons. They're in danger of losing four straight at Air Canada Centre for the first time since a five-game skid March 29-April 9, 2006.

The Nuggets have won three of their last four games in Toronto, and eight of nine overall against the Raptors since the beginning of the 2004-05 season.

The waters haven’t been quite as favorable for the Sharks as of late. The club has dropped three of its last six games and while that may not sound too bad it’s a big dip for a San Jose club with just five losses on the season.

“It’s going to get even harder because we start facing desperate teams,” goalie Evgeni Nabokov told the San Jose Mercury News after Monday’s 3-1 victory over Dallas. “It was a playoff-type atmosphere.”

The tests only get tougher and the opposition only gets more desperate for the Sharks.

The Minnesota Wild have lost nine of their last 10 and are falling fast in the Northwest division. The latest setback came Monday night against the Flames despite an excellent showing from backup netminder Josh Harding.

Niklas Backstrom is expected to be back between the pipes for the Wild and he might have two former sleeping scorers to contend with.

Jonathan Cheechoo has two goals in his last two contests while fellow right winger Milan Michalek scored his first goal in his last 10 games Monday against the Stars.

Colorado Avalanche at Phoenix Coyotes (-125, 5.5)

While missing their two primary playmakers, the Avs have been finding different ways to light the lamp. Unlikely heroes like Cody McLeod and John-Michael Liles are keeping Colorado’s playoff hopes alive.

“The younger guys have to step up, including myself,” McLeod told the team’s official Web site after potting two goals against the Predators on Monday. “We just have to keep doing that. It’s a 20-man effort and everybody contributed.”

The task would be a whole lot easier if Joe Sakic and Paul Stastny were among those 20. Sakic has struggled to stay out of the trainers’ room over his last two seasons. The 39-year-old is on the injured reserve after breaking several fingers in a freak snow-blowing accident.

Stastny, meanwhile, just underwent surgery on his right forearm and isn’t expected back for at least six weeks.

The good feelings for the Avalanche should end tonight in Arizona. The Coyotes are a difficult team to beat at home and should take advantage of a depleted Colorado group.
