    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, December 30

Maryland will meet Nevada in one of three bowl games on the schedule for Tuesday. Here's a look at all of the day's action in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Nevada is favored by 1.5 points versus Maryland in the Humanitarian Bowl on Tuesday afternoon (4:30pm ET kickoff). The Wolf Pack (7-5 straight-up, 5-6 against-the-spread) have won three of their last four games, and played tough against Boise State (losing 41-34). The Terrapins (7-5 SU, 5-6 ATS), in turn, have lost three of their last four, including 28-21 to Boston College last time out.

Western Michigan then takes on Rice in the Texas Bowl at 8:00pm ET, with the Owls listed as 2.5-point favorites. Rice has won six straight games to sit at 9-3 SU and 8-4 ATS, and they put up at least 35 points in each of those wins. The Broncos (9-3 SU, 5-6 ATS) fell 45-22 to ranked Boise State in their last contest.

Oregon will then take on Oklahoma State at 8:00pm ET in the Holiday Bowl, which matches up two ranked teams (the Ducks are No. 15, the Cowboys are No. 13). Oklahoma State (9-3 SU, 8-3 ATS) is listed as a 3-point favorite in this contest, but they were pounded 61-41 by Oklahoma last time out to finish off their tough schedule. Oregon (9-3 SU, 6-6 ATS) beat up on Oregon State 65-38 in their last game, and they enter this bowl matchup riding a three-game win streak.

    Other Notable Events

The Blackhawks and Red Wings will get a tune-up game for Thursday's Winter Classic when they meet on the (indoor) ice on Tuesday night in Detroit. Chicago improved to 20-6-7 on the season with a 4-1 win over Minnesota on Sunday, and they're trying to chase down Detroit in the Central Division standings. The Red Wings sit at 23-7-5 after suffering a 4-3 overtime loss to Colorado Saturday night.

The NHL offers up seven more games on Tuesday night, including a clash between Eastern powers Boston and Pittsburgh in the Steel City. As well, it's Washington at Buffalo, Montreal at Tampa Bay, Atlanta at Toronto, New Jersey at St. Louis, Ottawa at Edmonton, and then finally Philadelphia visiting Vancouver.

    The Rest of the Schedule

In the NBA, the Celtics are back in action on Tuesday night with a road game in Portland. Boston put an emphatic end to a two-game losing streak on Sunday, bouncing the Kings 108-63 in Sacramento. The Trail Blazers also cruised to a victory in their last outing, getting 32 points from Brandon Roy in a 102-89 home win versus Toronto. Rounding out the NBA's slate for Tuesday: Atlanta at Indiana, New York at Charlotte, Cleveland at Miami, Washington at New Orleans, Phoenix at Memphis, Minnesota at Dallas, and Milwaukee at San Antonio, while the Kings will look to shake off that Sunday rout when they host the L.A. Clippers.

Finally, college hoops sees several ranked teams in action on Tuesday, including No. 4 Oklahoma vs. Arkansas and No. 6 Wake Forest vs. Radford. As well, it's No. 9 Purdue vs. Illinois, No. 13 Syracuse vs. Seton Hall, No. 20 Clemson vs. South Carolina, and Missouri, who just fell out of the Top 25, taking on Centenary.

    News from the Wire

The NFL playoffs get underway this weekend, but the home teams aren't getting much love from the oddsmakers early in the week as all four road teams are currently pegged as the favorites. On Saturday it's Atlanta (-2) at Arizona and Indianapolis (-1) at San Diego, while Sunday has Baltimore (-3) at Miami and Philadelphia (-3) at Minnesota . . . Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (concussion) is expected to rest this week but be back in time for next weekend.

    A Peek at the Future

There are five bowl games on the schedule for Wednesday, including Houston (-3.5) vs. Air Force in the Armed Forces Bowl. As well, it's Oregon State (-2.5) vs. Pittsburgh in the Sun Bowl, Boston College (-3.5) vs. Vanderbilt in the Music City Bowl, Minnesota vs. Kansas (-9) in the Insight Bowl, and LSU vs. Georgia Tech (-4) in the Chick-fil-A Bowl . . . there are a pair of NBA matinees on Wednesday (Orlando/Chicago, New Jersey/Detroit), while the league will close out 2008 with Philly against the Clippers in a 9:30pm ET tipoff at Los Angeles' Staples Center.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

The Armadillo cares about your health; here are six all-natural aids to help you sleep, if you have some insomnia........

-- Valerian root-- Not only does it help you sleep, it eases muscle stiffness, and eases anxiety.

-- Chamomile tea-- Also helps with any digestive problems......

-- Celery-- Make sure you chew it well so you don't choke; celery is said to contain a lot of sedatives.

-- Lemon balm-- Unlike valerian root, it smells good, is soothing.

-- Lavender-- A whiff of lavender relaxes your nervous system, and reduces stress which can prevent you from sleeping.

-- Hops-- Would a nightly beer before bed help you sleep better?

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a winter day.......

        13) Eric Mangini was 23-25 in three years with the Jets, but had a couple winning seasons out of three, 9-7 this year, but he got fired on Monday. Why? Because the Jets' nitwit owner needed to quell an overly negative fanbase that is less likely to buy expensive PCLs for the new stadium they didn't need to build.

        12) Disgruntled fans are less likely to shell out big bucks to watch a team that didn't make the playoffs; hiring a big name (Bill Cowher is the preferred choice, obviously) creates buzz, and sells PSLs.

        11) Alabama lost its best offensive lineman for Sugar Bowl because of alleged dealings with an agent, which are a no-no. Its kind of sad that everyone else makes a fortune off college sports, but the kids are the ones punished for least little thing. How about suspending the agent? Isn't he, as the adult, more responsible?

        10) The economy is going to hit the PGA Tour hard, and soon; back in 1995, total prize money on Tour was $67M; four years later, the total was $134M, in 2007, $270M, but now they've lost at least one tournament off the '09 schedule, and more could be on the way. Look for the Tour to lower the minimum to sponsor a tournament in order to keep a full schedule of events in 2010 and beyond.

        9) Thanks to the geniuses of the cable TV industry for putting the Western Michigan-Rice bowl game on the NFL Network, which, as you might remember, I DON'T HAVE ON MY CABLE SYSTEM!! Rice is one of the best teams to watch, they throw it on every play, so now we're going out tomorrow the watch the Owls.

        8) Brian Billick is getting paid $15M over the next three years not to coach the Ravens; I wish people would pay me not to do things.

        7) Stupid stat of the week: Arizona Cardinals are 6-1 when they get eight or more penalties in a game, 3-6 when they don't.

        6) Over the last ten years, or since John Elway retired, the Broncos are 1-4 in playoff games, diminishing Mike Shanahan's reputation as a football genius. After reading Shanahan's book a few years ago, I had the feeling he fancied himself a combination of Walsh and Lombardi. Without Mr Elway under center, not so much.

        5) I forgot to put this in Sunday's Den, but Florida State's punter had one of the greatest games I've ever seen a punter have Saturday night in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando. He was voted MVP by the TV people. Graham Gano's first three punts were downed inside the Wisconsin 4-yard line; he drew a roughing penalty after that, and had another punt downed at the 7. Tremendous game for a kid who also made 24 of 26 field goals this year for the Seminoles.

        4) Miami Dolphins were 1-15 LY, under head coach Cam Cameron, who was fired; his only win was at home in OT, against the Ravens. Cameron is now Baltimore's offensive coordinator; he'll be in Miami this weekend for a playoff game-- who would have guessed it?

        3) This is how fragile coaching in the NFL is: at midpoint of the 2007 season, Detroit Lions were 6-2, and Rod Marinelli was in running for Coach of the Year. 14 months later, the Lions are 1-23 in their last 24 games, and Marinelli is unemployed. Did he suddenly become dumb? Players stop playing well, and coaches stop getting paid.

        2) Bad news for Raider fans; Al Davis' mom lived to the age of 103.

        1) Another popular theory out of New Jersey is that Brett Favre did not like Mangini much, and the Jets need Favre back to sell the PSLs and create hope for immediate future. Putting Kellen Clemens under center next year ain't going to sell any luxury boxes.

                    Tuesday, December 30

Notes on the best of today's games.............

South Carolina is 9-1, losing in OT at Charleston, but other than that, its schedule has been terrible; Gamecocks have played 342nd-ranked slate in country, just about the easiest. Clemson is 12-0, with wins at Miami by 25, Charlotte by 1, Illinois by 2. ACC road favorites are 6-9 vs spread; SEC underdogs are 7-9 against the number.

Cleveland State is 7-4, 3-2 on road, 1-1 in Horizon, 5-2 vs spread when favored; they've won their last five games, including win at the Carrier Dome, since losing by 10 at West Virginia. Wright State won its last four games after a 1-7 start- they just won three games in row on neutral floor over Oral Roberts (13), South Florida (17), Murray State (16).

George Mason is 8-2, 3-2 on road, with all five games decided by six or less points, and three of five decided either in OT or by a point. Dayton is 11-1, winning its last three games by 12+ points; their only loss is by 18 at Creigbhton. A-14 home favorites are 7-11 vs spread. CAA road underdogs are 15-15 on foreign soil.

Illinois is 12-1, losing only by hoop to Clemson at home; they won last six games, but this is their first true road game, after beating Missouri by 16, Kent State by 6 in OT and Tulsa by 4 on neutral floors. Purdue is 11-2, winning six games since Duke came to Mackey Arena and crushed Boilers 76-60 on Dec 2. Purdue is 5-5 vs spread when favored this year.

UAB is down to six scholarship players; they got outscored 45-34 in second half of 83-63 loss at Louisville Saturday; Blazers are 8-4, but 1-3 vs spread when the underdog. Butler is 9-1, but 2-3 vs spread when the favorite- they resume league play Saturday. C-USA road dogs are 4-8 vs spread. Horizon home favorites are 9-8 against the spread.

Seton Hall is 2-3 in last five games, with losses to James Madison and IUPUI in there; they also upset Virginia Tech and beat USC, so they're a team (2-0 vs spread) that is better off as underdog. Syracuse is 2-4 when favored this year, but they're 12-1 SU and they get Devendorf back from his suspension, just in time for league play. What a coincidence.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee is 5-5 vs D-I teams but is already 2-0 in Horizon play, winning home games against Detroit (71-62), Wright State (66-59); they beat Bradley in last game, 10 days ago, but Panthers are 0-3-1 vs spread as underdog. Illinois-Chicago won seven of last eight games, has covered three of five when favored this season.

BYU has had 10 days off to stew since controversial replay loss in the desert to Arizona State, when their game-winning hoop was called good, then taken away via replay, a shady call. Cougars are 3-1 on road. Tulsa won its last four games, is 7-4 vs D-I teams, 1-4 vs spread when a dog. MWC road favorites are 8-6 against the spread.

Ole Miss has already had three guards blow out ACLs this season, and their best player PG Warren was last one to do it, so they're in trouble on road here vs Southern Miss squad that is 8-4 against a weak schedule, where best team they've beaten is Weber State or Iona. SEC road dogs are 2-7 vs spread. C-USA home favorites are 18-7.

Lot like South Carolina, Arkansas is 9-1 playing 340th-ranked schedule in country, just terrible teams- South Alabama is best team they've beat and they lost 62-57 at Missouri State. Oklahoma isw 12-0, winning at Rice by 12, at Tulsa by 25; they're 4-4 vs spread when favored. Big 12 road favorites are 3-2 vs spread. SEC home dogs are 1-0.

Houston is 7-2, losing its first game and last (71-67 at home to Iowa St as 13-point home favorite Sunday); they're 4-2 vs spread when favored. UMass is 3-6 vs D-I teams but won at Memphis, while losing at both Green Bay and Toledo, so who knows with them. A-14 road dogs have covered 11 of 28. C-USA home favorites are 18-7.

New Mexico (-10.5) whacked New Mexico State 76-62 last week, with Lobos grabbing 14 offensive boards, shooting 12 more FTs than Aggies. Lobos are 1-4 away from The Pit, losing by 8 at Texas Tech, winning by 3 at San Diego, losing at Creighton by 7. State is 6-6- they took out the frustrations of two-game skid in last game, beating LMU 104-62.

Buffalo just nipped Pepperdine, Colorado by total of three points to get to finals of Rainbow Classic; Bulls won four of last five games, losing at Siena by 11 a week ago. Colorado State hammered Hawai'i in first round, then upset Vermont last yesterday to get to final- they had time to rest for the final. Rams have been more impressive team in their wins here.

Phoenix Suns at Memphis Grizzlies (+6, 208)

Shaquille O'Neal will never lead the league in assists like teammate Steve Nash, but first-year Phoenix coach Terry Porter is finding out the future Hall of Fame center can facilitate an offense.

With Nash questionable due to back spasms, O'Neal may again be the center of the offense as the Suns go for their 10th straight victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night.

Nash pulled himself out of Monday's game in the first quarter after going scoreless with two assists. On Nov. 20, the two-time MVP also exited the Suns' 105-92 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers with back spasms.

With Nash sidelined on Monday, Porter looked toward the Suns' other MVP.

O'Neal delivered with his 10th double-double this season - 28 points and 12 boards. He moved past Dominique Wilkins into ninth place on the NBA career scoring list, and O'Neal needs 19 points to tie Oscar Robertson for eighth with 26,710.

After falling 106-103 in double overtime to San Antonio on Saturday, Memphis (10-21) lost for the sixth time in seven games, 108-98 in overtime to Minnesota on Monday.

O.J. Mayo, who scored a career-high 33 in the loss to Phoenix last month, led the Grizzlies with 23 on Monday, including seven straight in the fourth quarter. Mayo leads all rookies with 20.2 points per game.

After holding four opponents to 97 points or fewer during a 5-1 stretch from Dec. 5-14, Memphis is allowing 103.9 points per game in its last seven contests.

                              Pick: Grizzlies

Boston Celtics at Portland Trail Blazers (+4, 187.5)

Boston opened 27-2 to record the best start in NBA history, but doubled its loss total on the first half of this road trip - its longest of the season thus far and its first to the West Coast. A franchise-record 19-game winning streak ended on Christmas with a 92-83 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, and the following night saw the Celtics (28-4) fall 99-89 to a Golden State team which entered with an 8-22 record.

The first losing streak of their season would go no further. Boston equaled the sixth-most lopsided win in team history by routing Sacramento 108-63 on Sunday.

"It wasn't like we're a team that's going to panic," Paul Pierce said. "We just tried to regroup. We just executed back on the court and just did some of the things we've been doing all year long, trying to get a win and play better basketball."

Boston outrebounded its opponent for a 14th straight game, but the margin was 53-31 on Sunday after it was just nine in the first two games of the trip combined. The Celtics limited the Kings to 27.9 percent from the field, their best such performance since holding Philadelphia to 27.0 percent on March 28, 2004.

Portland (19-12) is very aware just how good the Celtics are defensively. The Blazers' second-lowest point total of the season came at Boston in a 93-78 loss on Dec. 5. The Celtics had a 41-31 edge on the boards.

They forced Greg Oden into a rough night, limiting last year's No. 1 overall draft pick to six points and six boards as he fouled out in 18 minutes.

Oden showed his upside Saturday, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a 102-98 victory over Toronto. The 7-footer, who has nine double-doubles, had averaged 6.0 points and 4.4 boards in his previous five games, often battling foul trouble.

Ray Allen has averaged 24.3 points in three matchups with Portland since joining the Celtics last season, and each one has been a double-digit victory. The Celtics have won seven straight versus the Blazers since losing in Portland on Dec. 9, 2004.

                              Pick: Celtics
