National Hockey League – Hot lines

              NHL

              Friday, December 26

              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Ice Picks: NHL Bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Flyers at Chicago Blackhawks (-134, 6)

The NHL returns to action after a two-day stoppage over the holidays and hockey fans are being treated with matchup filled with rising stars.

The Chicago Blackhawks, a long time door mat in the Western Conference, are now the most exciting squad to watch in the league thanks to the strong play of Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews.

Kane, a baby-faced 20-year-old, leads the Hawks with 39 points in 31 games. Last year’s Calder Trophy winner has helped guide Chicago to elite status but the leaders on the club are making sure the kids keep their heads level.

“We aren’t getting too far ahead of ourselves, but we are having fun with this,” Hawks forward Patrick Sharpe told reporters. “This is new territory for a lot of the guys in here. The playoffs are our goal but we are learning how to win games right now.”

Chicago needs to learn how to beat Original Six rival Philadelphia. The Flyers have lost to the Hawks just once in the past 11 seasons.

Philly boasts its own young guns in sniper Jeff Carter (at the top of the league in goals with 26) and two-way center Mike Richards.

              Pick: Flyers

Pittsburgh Penguins at New Jersey Devils (-129, 5.5)

The Penguins have been playing close to the top of the pack in the Eastern Conference despite missing their top two defensemen (Sergei Gonchar and Ryan Whitney). Both blueliners excel handling the puck and advancing the offensive attack.

During the first two and a half months of the season, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were able to hold down the fort with the shorthanded backend, but over the last three weeks Pittsburgh has hit a snag.

Michel Therrien’s troupe is 3-6 over the last night contests and hasn’t won two in a row since November 15th.

“The schedule is pretty tough. We just played four games in six days. Those are excuses,” coach Therrien said after losing to the Lightning Tuesday night. “We don’t have the right attitude. We like to complain about each other on the bench and on the ice.”

The 2-0 loss to Tampa Bay was Whitney first game back, but he’ll need more time before he can be a factor on the power play again.

Expect the disciplined Devils to take advantage of the inconsistent Penguins.

              Pick: Penguins
