    Trends and Indexes

    Monday, December 22

Good Luck on day #357 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads to be posted and updated:
    • NCAAF Bowl Season Trends and Indexes 12/20 through 1/8”
    • “NFL Week 16 Trends and Indexes 12/18 through 12/22”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, and the NHL until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.
Any opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the posting member or BettorsChat.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, December 22

The Packers will be looking to put an end to their four-game losing streak on Monday night when they take on the Bears. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Green Bay has fallen from 5-5 to 5-9 straight-up since their skid began, and they're now well out of playoff contention in the NFC. The Packers fell 20-16 in Jacksonville last week, as Aaron Rodgers went 20-of-32 for 278 yards passing with one TD and one INT. Ryan Grant ran for just 56 yards on 21 carries in the loss. That result put Green Bay at 6-7-1 against-the-spread through 14 contests.

Chicago is coming off a 27-24 victory over New Orleans, with Robbie Gould booting the game-winning field goal in overtime. Kyle Orton completed 24-of-40 pass attempts for 172 yards with two interceptions, while Matt Forte ran for 34 yards and a score on 11 carries. Forte is on the team's injury report as QUESTIONABLE with a toe injury, but he's expected to play on Monday night.

The last time the Packers won was back in Week 11, when they pounded the Bears 37-3 in Green Bay. The Packers easily covered the 3.5-point spread in that UNDER result. Chicago, which is 8-6 SU and 6-6-2 ATS on the season, is pegged as a 4-point favorite for Monday night, with the total at 41 points. The Packers are 8-6 on the OVER/UNDER this season, while the Bears are 6-8 OU.

    Other Notable Events

The Los Angeles Lakers have lost two games in a row, and they'll try to get back on the winning track on Monday night when they play in Memphis against the Grizzlies. The Lakers fell 89-87 to Miami on Friday night, and then Orlando beat them 106-103 on Saturday. Kobe Bryant poured in 41 points against the Magic.

There are five other games on the NBA's schedule for Monday night, including Portland at Denver. As well, the Magic will play host to Golden State, while Houston is in New Jersey, Sacramento is in San Antonio, and Toronto travels to Los Angeles to play the Clippers. The other L.A. team fell to Milwaukee on Saturday.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The Vancouver Canucks won't have Mats Sundin in the lineup yet, but they'll play host to the Anaheim Ducks in NHL action on Monday night. There are three other games on the ice on Monday, including Sidney Crosby and the Penguins in Buffalo. As well, Toronto is in Atlanta, while Phoenix will travel north to Edmonton.

Finally, No. 4 Oklahoma is the top college hoops team in action; they'll take on Rice. As well, it's No. 10 Wake Forest vs. East Carolina, Coppin State vs. No. 11 Syracuse, Savannah State vs. No. 12 Notre Dame, IPFW vs. No. 13 Purdue, N.C. Asheville vs. No. 17 Ohio State, Navy vs. No. 18 Villanova, Hartford vs. No. 21 Baylor, Drexel vs. No. 23 Memphis, and also No. 24 Marquette vs. N.C. State.

    News from the Wire

Bears RB Jason McKie is listed as OUT for Monday with his quad injury, while WR Marty Booker (ribs) and Forte are QUESTIONABLE, and DT Tommie Harris (knee) is PROBABLE . . . DT Justin Harrell (hip/back) is OUT for the Packers, while RB Korey Hall (knee) and RB Brandon Jackson (wrist) are QUESTIONABLE, and T Chad Clifton (thumbs/knees), CB Al Harris (shoulder), TE Tory Humphrey (concussion),and CB Charles Woodson (toe) are PROBABLE.

    A Peek at the Future

It's Boise State vs. TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl on Tuesday night, with the Horned Frogs favored by 3 points . . . the Lakers take the court in New Orleans on Tuesday, while Boston hosts Philadelphia, and Houston is in Cleveland . . .the NHL had 13 games on its schedule for Tuesday, including Boston at New Jersey . . . all of the games on the NFL's Week 17 schedule will be played on Sunday.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- If you took the Panthers +3.5 Sunday night, I feel for you; life ain't always fair.

-- I paid $1.84 a gallon for gas Saturday night, down from a high of $4.33 this summer. Interesting to see how low price of gas goes.

-- Glen Davis of the Celtics got into a car accident Sunday, on his way to work and will be hospitalized overnight with a concussion.

-- Celtics, by the way, have won 18 games in a row, are now 26-2.

-- Southern Mississippi wore gold jerseys with gold pants at New Orleans Bowl Sunday night; if a ref threw a penalty flag and it hit a Southern Miss player, it would blend right in. Very bright.

-- Angels withdrew their $160M, 8-year offer to Mark Teixeira; it will be a sad day at Armadillo world headquarters if the Nationals sign him. So far, they seem to have the highest offer on the table.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a snowy sports Sunday

        13) Can you believe that if the playoffs started Monday morning, the Cowboys would make it? Tampa and Philly both lost as favorites, so Dysfunction's Team is still alive. God forbid we don't hear from their cast of characters on ESPN all week.

        12) NBC flexed into the Denver San Diego game Sunday night; either the Jet-Dolphin or Giant-Viking game has to get moved to 4:15, since the Jets/Giants are not allowed to play at the same time, unless they are playing each other. Carolina has to win in New Orleans to be the NFC South champ and get a first round bye, since it figures that the Falcons will dispose of St Louis fairly easily.

        11) Cardinals looked totally disinterested in playing Sunday; they ran Hightower up the middle the first five or six plays in a row, as they got crushed 47-7 in Foxboro. Has any other division winner in NFL history been down 28-0 or worse in four different games?

        10) Pittsburgh turned ball over four times and missed a 33-yard FG as Tennessee clinched homefield edge thru playoffs with a 31-14 win over the Steelers. 21 of 31 Titan points came off of turnovers.

        9) Not the best day for DeSean Jackson, who dropped the two best passes McNabb threw all day, including one in end zone as Eagles lost 10-3 to Washington, a crippling loss for Philadelphia.

        8) The great Isaac Bruce caught his 1,000th career pass Sunday, so I congratulate him. I didn't know it at the time, but in October, 1990, I saw Bruce play for West LA Junior College in a game against Santa Monica on a crummy field with about 100 people watching. What a long way he has come from there, going to Memphis, then the NFL, and eventually a few years from now, he'll wind up in Canton.

        7) Sometimes even really good handicappers are wrong-- guy named Wildcat in the New York Post does a good job, but his NFL pick for this week was the Miami-Kansas City game, under 40. Chiefs led at the half, 28-24, on a day with sub-zero wind chills. Whoops.

        6) Minnesota drove 90 yards for a TD on its first drive, then on next three possessions, they lost three fumbles, all in Atlanta territory. In all, Vikings fumbled seven times, lost four of them. Not good.

        5) There were seven teams that didn't ball turn ball over this week; all seven of them won, by 7-17-40-7-7-7-17 points. Six of seven teams were underdogs-- all seven covered, with Patriots the only favorite.

        4) I'd love to know the percentage of second down running plays that follow an incomplete pass-- it has to be a pretty high figure. No one seems to want to throw on 2nd and 10.

        3) What a warrior Derrick Mason was Saturday night- his shoulder is obviously bothering him, causing to leave the game just about every time he got tackled, but he made a huge fumble recovery to keep one drive alive, then caught a TD pass as Ravens had big win in Dallas.

        2) I want NFL ref Walt Coleman's travel schedule; his crew has called the least penalties of any crew in the NFL, so it figures that games he works would have better chance of going over the total. Hmmmmm

        1) After wasting another hour of my life researching this info, here is what I found-- over is 9-7 in the games Coleman has worked in 2008, underdogs are 8-7 vs spread (one game was pick 'em), road teams are 8-8, after starting season 5-1. His average total is 46.0, pretty high. I had to re-do these figures after the Giants covered in overtime.

        1) All of us have a day now and then that is just plain hideous, and Sunday was one of mine-- good news is now I have one less hideous day to look forward to the rest of my life. Rod Marinelli, Jim Haslett have one more hideous Sunday before a nightmarish 2008 is over.

Portland Trail Blazers at Denver Nuggets [9 PM ET]

Blazers: Portland's Brandon Roy continues to work his way into becoming one of the NBA's top players after scoring a career-high 52 points in a 124-119 win over Phoenix on Friday. “He was just knocking down shots,” Blazers head coach Nate McMillan said. “You almost expect him to do this night after night.” Roy has scored at least 29 points in each of his last five games, averaging 36.4 during that stretch.“My No. 1 goal is to win," Roy said. "Not to be the MVP. Not to be the All-Star.”

Blazers are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
The UNDER is 10-3 in Portland's last 13 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Martell Webster (foot) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 96

Nuggets (-3.5, O/U 202): Denver is looking to avoid losing four in a row for the first time since February of 2007. The Nuggets have dropped their previous three games against teams that are all at least five games over the .500 mark, and that will be the case against here against Portland (17-10). “One thing I emphasized to the team is we’re beating ourselves a little bit,” Denver head coach George Karl said. “There’s a positive energy to how we’re playing but losing is tough to overcome. We’re still in a good place.”

Nuggets are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The UNDER is 4-1 in Denver's last 5 games overall.

              Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 106 (Side Play of the Day)

Pittsburgh Penguins at Buffalo Sabres (-107, 5.5)

The Pittsburgh Penguins are getting sick of watching the red light shine. They've lost nine of their last 15 games, allowing an average of four goals in those defeats. Pittsburgh was peppered by the Toronto Maple Leafs, losing 7-3 Saturday night.

"It was a bad game by everyone involved," Pittsburgh coach Michel Therrien told reporters following the loss. "We didn't show up."

Pittsburgh was outshot 40-to-23 and constantly turned the puck over. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who was playing his second game back off injury, faced 11 of the first 12 shots of game. He finished with 28 saves on 33 shots and was pulled in the third period.

The Penguins have lost their previous two meetings with the Sabres. They finished on the wrong end of 4-3 games in both of those contests.

                          Pick: Buffalo -107

Phoenix Coyotes at Edmonton Oilers (-130, 5.5)

Shoot 'em all and let God sort 'em out.

That's been the Oilers' offensive philosophy in recent games. Edmonton has instituted a fire-at-will policy, try to get as many shots on goal while crashing the crease for rebounds. It peppered Anaheim with 53 shots in a 3-2 loss Friday.

"We've talked about it a lot in the last little while that we want to get everything on net and go hard to the net," Kyle Brodziak told the Edmonton Sun.

"Getting over 50 shots is something that we haven't done in a while. Hopefully, we can build on that and now start burying some of those chances."

The Oilers are struggling to find the net in their last six games, averaging just two goals over that stretch. Both Friday's goals were scored in true garbage fashion during mad scrambled in front of the net.

Edmonton has won the last four games against Phoenix, outscoring the Coyotes 22-10 over those meetings.

                          Pick: Edmonton -130

Sacramento Kings at San Antonio Spurs (-13, 196)

The San Antonio Spurs are again at full strength and appear to be moving back toward to the top of the Western Conference.

The Sacramento Kings, meanwhile, keep sinking lower and lower.

San Antonio should be in good position to earn its fifth straight home win Monday, when the Kings will try to avoid coming up empty on their four-game road trip.

After playing much of the early season without injured guards Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker, the Spurs (16-10) have started to roll with both back in the lineup, winning six straight before losing at New Orleans and Orlando last week.

They bounced back Saturday night at home, hitting a franchise record-tying 16 3-pointers and beating Toronto 107-97 for their ninth win in 11 home games.

Parker, who missed nine November games with an ankle sprain, led the way with 24 points on 11-of-19 shooting along with 10 assists and eight rebounds. He shot 3-of-17 from the field in the previous game, a 90-78 loss to the Magic on Thursday.

"I knew tonight was going to be my night," Parker said. "... I couldn't wait to come back home and defend our court for a nice Christmas. We have two more games over the holiday, and hopefully we can take care of business and get some wins."

After facing the Kings, San Antonio hosts Minnesota on Tuesday before a Christmas Day showdown at Phoenix.

While the Spurs are again playing stifling defense this season, ranking fourth in the NBA with 93.8 points allowed per game, they looked almost Suns-like on the offensive end Saturday. San Antonio shot 16-of-35 (45.7 percent) from 3-point range, with Michael Finley, Matt Bonner and Roger Mason each making four 3s and Ginobili going 3-of-5.

"Things are always easier when you make shots," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

                            Pick: San Antonio -13

Golden State Warriors at Orlando Magic (-12, 218)

The Golden State Warriors didn't have to worry about an injured Dwight Howard when the Orlando Magic visited last week. Jameer Nelson made sure the absence of Orlando's big man didn't hurt too much.

Nelson's scoring binge has continued since tying his career high last week in Oakland, and he and Howard will try to lead the Magic to a fifth straight win on Monday when they host the high-scoring Warriors.

Howard, Orlando's All-Star center, had played all 351 games in his first four-plus seasons in the NBA before sitting out two games last week with a sore left knee. But with Howard out, the Magic's other scorers stepped up. Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis combined for 50 points in a 103-94 win at Utah on Dec. 13, then it was Nelson making the difference in a 109-98 win at Golden State two nights later.

The fifth-year point guard matched his career high with 32 points, helping lead the Magic (21-6) to their sixth win in seven games.

"I have no idea how many shots it was, I was just shooting," Nelson said after going 13-of-25 from the field. "I tell people all the time if the shot is there I'm going to take it.

Nelson's hot hand has continued the past two games with Howard back. He had 24 points and seven assists on Thursday in a 90-78 win over San Antonio, and was responsible for a second-half turnaround Saturday against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Down nine at the half, Nelson had 15 of Orlando's 36 points in the third quarter, and the Magic went on to beat the Western Conference's top team 106-103, fending off 41 points from Kobe Bryant.

"We believe we're contenders," said Nelson, who's led the team in scoring in three straight games. "The naysayers say we're not. This means a lot. I think it's a statement game. It shows we're serious and we're contenders for the East."

They're certainly more dangerous with Howard, who's averaged 16.0 points and 12.5 rebounds since returning against the Spurs. The NBA's leading rebounder (14.0 per game) feels that missing two games will help him - and his teammates - in the long run.

"I think it was really a good thing that I missed those two games," Howard said. "One, for me, giving rest for my body. And two, for my teammates that they can win without me, and do a lot of great things and trust each other."

                            Pick: Under 218
