Saturday's List of 13: Ranking college basketball conferences

We're using kenpom.com for our ratings.......

                      13) Horizon-- Butler is 8-1 against the 14th-ranked schedule, but it is still ranked just 33rd in country. A definite one-bid league.

                      12) WAC-- Idaho isn't a walkover anymore; which helps the ratings, but Utah State is only team in WAC ranked in top 97 in country.

                      11) WCC-- Strange league; Gonzaga, St Mary's are NCAA teams, LMU, Pepperdine are 0-20 vs D-I teams, and the other four are in the middle, ranked anywhere from 136-171.

                      10) Conference USA-- Memphis is like UNLV was in the late 80's, dominating a bad league, even worse than Big Wesr was then. UAB is horrible disappointment, so this is still a one-bid league. Houston is 2nd-ranked team at #43. Another one-bid league, unless Memphis is upset on conference tournament.

                      9) Missouri Valley-- League has slipped badly from 2-3 years ago; Evansville is top-rated team right now, at #48. When was last time So. Illinois was 4-5? Back to being a one-team bid conference.

                      8) Atlantic 14-- Xavier is best team in league, but they got crushed by Duke Saturday; Rhode Island, Temple are on rise. This league is all over the place, from Charlotte to St Louis to Olean to Pittsburgh.

                      7) Mountain West-- Utah, San Diego State are only teams in league that have played schedules ranked in top 150 in country. BYU is #11 but has played #259 schedule. Lot of mediocre teams in the league.

                      6) SEC-- Ole Miss is in deep trouble with three guards out for year; Arkansas has played 340th-ranked schedule, LSU 344th (before its game vs Texas A&M Saturday). Tennessee is by far best in SEC.

                      5) Pac-10-- Oregon schools are combined 7-11, but Arizona St, Cal and Stanford are improved. UCLA is only team in top 25, but they have seven teams ranked from 26th to 55th.

                      4) Big 12-- Have six of top 23 teams; Baylor, Missouri a lot better, but Texas A&M has played 312th-ranked schedule so far. Texas is playing tough schedule, Kansas is rebuilding, Okla State is better, and Oklahoma's Blake Griffin is one of four best players in the country.

                      3) Big East-- 16 teams is too many for one league- they definitely are going to have eight teams in NCAA's; right now, Marquette is on the fence with Cincinnati for extra bids. Marquette playing 302nd sked isn't going to look good in March, though Big East will improve that.

                      2) Big 11-- I will be 49 next week, and have never seen Northwestern ranked 3rd in Big 11, but they're 7-1 heading into Saturday night tilt at 6-0 Stanford. They have five teams ranked 39-55th. Purdue finally is playing well vs a good team, pounding Davidson as I type this.

                      1) ACC-- Bottom feeders in Big East drag them out of top spot; no easy outs in ACC, with six of top 32 teams in country. UNC/Duke are still 1-2 in league, with Clemson-Maryland-Miami-Wake Forest lurking in background. All six should be in the NCAAs.
