    Trends and Indexes

    Friday, December 19

Good Luck on day #354 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads to be posted and updated:
    • NCAAF Bowl Season Trends and Indexes 12/20 through 1/8”
    • “NFL Week 16 Trends and Indexes 12/18 through 12/22”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, and the NHL until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.
Any opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the posting member or BettorsChat.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, December 19

The streaking Boston Celtics will try to continue their reign of NBA terror on Friday night when they play the Chicago Bulls. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Denver Broncos might be on the verge of clinching the AFC West division title, but they've been one of the least lucrative teams for NFL bettors this season. At 4-9-1 against-the-spread (8-6 straight-up) wagering on the Broncos has not been a winning proposition, and it gets even worse for them at home where they are 0-6-1 versus the number so far this season. Denver is at home again this Sunday, and they'll be trying to get past the Bills as 7-point favorites.

At 6-8 SU the San Diego Chargers can still theoretically catch the Broncos for top spot in the AFC West, but at 5-8-1 ATS they haven't been much of a wager this season either. As well, the Chargers are 2-4-1 ATS on the road this year, and they'll be in Tampa Bay Sunday for a game against the Buccaneers. The Bucs are pegged as 3.5-point home favorites in that must-win contest for the Chargers.

    Other Notable Events

The Chicago Bulls will be the next team to try and put an end to the Boston Celtics' winning streak. Boston slipped past Atlanta 88-85 on the road last time out to pick up their 16th win in a row. The Celtics now sit at 24-2 straight-up and 14-12 against-the-spread on the season. The Bulls beat the Clippers 115-109 in overtime in their last outing, and now sit at 12-13 SU and 12-13 ATS on the year.

A busy Friday has 11 other games on the hardwood, including the Hawks back in action at home against Golden State. As well, it's Philadelphia at Washington, the Clippers at Indiana, Milwaukee at New York, Dallas at New Jersey, Toronto at Oklahoma City, Utah at Detroit, Charlotte at Memphis, Sacramento at Houston, and Cleveland at Denver, with the Lakers on the road versus the Heat.

    The Rest of the Schedule

On the ice, the Chicago Blackhawks will be looking for another laugher in Alberta when they play on the road against the Calgary Flames. The Hawks pounded the Oilers 9-2 in their last game on Tuesday night, getting two goals from Troy Brouwer and a goal and two assists from Patrick Kane. The Flames slipped past the Wild 3-2 on the road in their last outing on a Todd Bertuzzi overtime winner.

There are four other games on the NHL's schedule for Friday, including Ottawa at New Jersey, Los Angeles at Buffalo, and the Islanders at Minnesota. As well, the Oilers will be trying to hold down the fort a bit better when they host Anaheim.

Finally, there are just a pair of ranked college basketball teams in action on Friday, with No. 10 Wake Forest at Richmond, and Western Carolina at No. 24 Marquette. The Golden Eagles dropped just their second game of the season last time out, falling 80-68 to No. 16 Tennessee to put them at 8-2 in 10 contests.

    News from the Wire

Free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal decided to spurn the Atlanta Braves and return to the Los Angeles Dodgers . . . Lakers forward Pau Gasol missed the team's last game due to strep throat, and he might have to sit out Friday night as well . . . Canucks defensemen Sami Salo (upper body) and Shane O'Brien (leg) were both injured on Wednesday night, and are questionable for this weekend.

    A Peek at the Future

The Lakers will go up against one of the East's top clubs on Saturday night, as they'll be on the road in Orlando. The other notable NBA game on Saturday sees Denver at Phoenix . . . South Florida opened as a 14-point favorite versus Memphis in the St. Petersburg Bowl for Saturday afternoon, but that line has fallen to 12 or 12.5 at many books. The total for the game is pegged at 53 points.

      Six-pack for Friday

If you think your divorce was bad, check out what these musicians paid up to get out of their marriages........info is from yahoo.com

-- Paul McCartney paid Heather Mills a cool $50 million.

-- Phil Collins also paid $50M to divorce his second wife, Orianne Cevey; he doesn't learn, because he paid Jill Tavelmann, his first wife, $34M to go away. Yikes.

-- Janet Jackson coughed up $15M to Rene Elizondo, including an $8M beachfront home in Malibu and a $120,000 Mercedes.

-- Lionel Ritchie paid $20M to Randy Alexander, his second wife; Ms Alexander asked for $20,000 a year for cosmetic surgery.

-- Mick Jagger paid Jeri Hall, who is mother to four of his seven children, $20M. Where do these people get so much money?

-- Then there's Neil Diamond, who was married to someone named Marcia Murphey for over 20 years - he paid her a reported $150M in their divorce agreement, yes, 150 freakin' million dollars. Wow.

Friday's List of 13: Random knowledge, mostly about college

        13) They had 3.6 inches of snow in Las Vegas this week, the most of the white stuff they've seen since 1979. They closed the airport, but its still my favorite city on earth, snow or no snow.

        12) According to Power Sweep. one of the bibles of college football, Oregon State played the toughest schedule of all the bowl teams, and Ball State played the easiest schedule of anyone in the country.

        11) Over the last decade, non-January 1 bowl underdogs of 12 points or more are 9-2 against the pointspread.

        10) Ryne Sandberg moves up from A ball to AA Southern League in 2009, as he goes about learning to manage the right way, in minors. You look at Willie Randolph's failure with the Mets, and you wonder if he had spent some time riding buses instead of just sitting next to Joe Torre, if he would be a better skipper now.

        9) Southern Mississippi goes to the New Orleans Bowl, despite its five-game losing streak- they went seven weeks in between wins.

        8) Fresno State covered just one of its last eleven games.

        7) An indication of just how dreadful the Rams are: 49ers are a road favorite for the first time since midway through the 2003 season.

        6) Favorites are 23-11 against the spread in Pac-10 teams' games vs non-conference teams this season.

        5) South Florida gets a home game when they play at Tropicana Field in the St Petersburg Bowl, but Bulls covered just two of their last 11 games on artificial turf, which is what the Trop has.

        4) Florida State is 18-10-1 in bowls under Bobby Bowden.

        3) SEC teams are 2-7 against the spread in the Music City Bowl.

        2) Underdog won five of last seven Fiesta Bowls SU; favorites have covered five of the last seven Orange Bowls.

        1) Howard Schnellenberger has won, covered all five of his bowls; he has Florida Atlantic facing Central Michigan in Motor City Bowl. Butch Davis is 4-0 in bowls; his Tar Heels take on West Virginia in the bowl game in Charlotte, Meineke Muffler Bowl, or whatever.....

              Tips and Trends
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Miami Heat [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Lakers: LA is hoping to have Pau Gasol back in the lineup, although he remains questionable with strep throat. Lamar Odom totaled season highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds filling in for Gasol in a 116-114 win over New York on Tuesday despite suffering from an upper respiratory infection himself. “Pau was out and I kind of willed myself to do it - football mentality,” said Odom, who is averaging 13.3 points, 15.0 rebounds and 5.7 assists in three games in Miami with the Lakers

Lakers are 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
The UNDER is 9-3 in LA's last 12 games vs. Southeast Division.

Key Injuries - C Pau Gasol (illness) is questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Heat (NA): Miami has dropped three in a row following a season-high four-game winning streak, mainly because nobody has stepped up to support Dwyane Wade. “We can’t put it all on Dwyane,” Heat forward Udonis Haslem said. “Someone’s got to pick their game up somewhere.” Wade averaged 34.8 points on 50 percent shooting during the winning streak but has seen those numbers fall dramatically to 17.7 points on 33.9 percent shooting during the skid.

Heat are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
The UNDER is 1-6 in the last 7 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Daequan Cook (flu) is probable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cleveland Cavaliers at Denver Nuggets [ESPN | 10:30 PM ET]

Cavaliers: Cleveland star LeBron James renews his personal rivalry with childhood friend Carmelo Anthony after he won the first meeting earlier this season, 110-99. “Any time I play LeBron and we play Cleveland it’s a fun game," Anthony said. "That’s the way it is, there’s so much hype around the game.” The Cavs had lost the previous five meetings, and that victory is part of an amazing 20-2 run. James ranks second in the NBA in scoring at 27.3 points per game and is the only player averaging more than 20 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Cavs are 15-2 ATS in their last 17 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-3 in Cleveland's last 11 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Zydrunas Ilgauskas (ankle) is questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 96

Nuggets (-1, O/U 197): Anthony is enjoying his best offensive stretch of the season, averaging 29.3 points in the last four games. He went through a bit of an adjustment period after Denver acquired point guard Chauncey Billups, who has seen the Nuggets go 16-5 since his arrival. One of those losses came to the Cavs back on November 12th. They are coming off a 108-96 loss to Houston on Tuesday and have not lost consecutive games with Billups.

Nuggets are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The OVER is 7-1 in Denver's last 8 home games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 101 (Side Play of the Day)

                Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charlotte Bobcats at Memphis Grizzlies (NA)

Most people thought Grizzlies rookie guard O.J. Mayo (20.8 PPG, 4.2 RPG) would be a good professional player but no one thought it would happen so quickly.

In just his first campaign, Mayo is leading his club in scoring. He is also the only rookie to score in double digits in every contest.

But most impressively, Mayo is more focused on his club's record than on his personal statistics and accomplishments.

“We’ve got a good team, and we feel like there were some games earlier this season that we let slip through our hands, maybe through youth or a lack of experience,” Mayo told reporters after Sundays victory over the Miami Heat. “But I think we've got a lot of winners on this team. We're all getting it together and clicking together.”

Mayo certainly should believe in his Grizzlies.

Memphis is one of the league’s hottest clubs, going 4-1 straight up (SU) in its last five overall. It is also 5-0 against the spread (ATS) in that period.

                Pick: Memphis

Chicago Bulls at Boston Celtics (NA)

Derrick Rose is bringing his Bulls back to the Garden. But this time he is hoping for a better outcome.

On paper it looks like the Bulls are overmatched. The Celtics are the world champs and at 24-2 have the league's best record. They also trounced the Bulls at home by 16-points back in October.

But the Bulls have improved drastically and they will be able to hang with the Celtics.

Rose leads the Bulls in assists (6.3 APG), field goal percentage (47.7 percent) and is ranked second in points (17.7 PPG). In just his second NBA contest, he scored a game-high 18 points in a setback to the Celtics October 31. He has also led the Bulls to wins in four of their last six tilts.

Boston, meanwhile, has failed to cover the number in back-to-back contests.

                Pick: Chicago

Los Angeles Kings at Buffalo Sabres (-170, 5.5)

The goaltending situation in Los Angeles has been hairy since Kelly Hrudey and his blue bandana left town back in 1996. Kings fans must be frustrated by the glaring issue that’s preventing the team from improving.

The Kings played two of the league’s best teams (Sharks and Rangers) tough, but dropped both home games after regulation time. Netminding was the difference in both matches and Los Angeles’ skaters are trying their best to bite their tongues.

“I think the effort was there and we can be satisfied with our playing, but it’s frustrating to not win,” forward Anze Kopitar told the Los Angeles Times after Wednesday’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Rangers.

The news doesn’t get better for hockey fans in Southern California. Jason LaBarbera will be getting the majority of starts between the pipes while fellow goalie Erik Ersberg takes the next two weeks off to rest his sore groin.

                              Pick: Sabres -170

Anaheim Ducks at Edmonton Oilers (+100, 5.5)

The last time the Oilers played at the Rexall Place the home fans booed them off the ice. The Chicago Blackhawks dumped Edmonton 9-2 Tuesday night tying the Oilers’ franchise record for the worst home defeat.

“It was humiliating,” Edmonton defenseman Sheldon Souray told reporters after the lopsided outcome. “It was a real poor effort. They pretty much exposed us in every area of the game. They took it to us all over the place. All the way around we got outplayed. It’s been a long time since I have been part of a game like that.”

You’d think a humbling loss like that would have the Oilers ready to lay a beatdown on their next opponent. Instead, the Canucks skated away with a 4-2 win over the reeling Alberta club.

Things might come easier for the Oilers tonight against the Ducks. Anaheim, once revered as the best defensive squad in the league, has been making silly mistakes with the puck in its own end.

The Rangers scored two of their three goals pulling dipsy-do moves on Norris Trophy winners Scott Niedermayer and Chris Pronger against Anaheim Tuesday night.

                              Pick: Over 5.5
