    Trends and Indexes

    Monday, December 15

Good Luck on day #350 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads:
    • NCAAF Bowl Season Trends and Indexes 12/20 through 1/8”
    • “NFL Week 15 Trends and Indexes 12/11 through 12/15”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, and the NHL until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.
Any opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the posting member or BettorsChat.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, December 15

The Eagles will be looking to stay in the NFC postseason race on Monday night when they play host to the Browns. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Philadelphia is coming off impressive back-to-back wins over the Cardinals and Giants which has them at 7-5-1 straight-up (and a profitable 8-5 against-the-spread) through 13 games. Donovan McNabb went just 19-of-30 for 191 yards passing and a TD last week against New York, but it was enough to guide his team to a 20-14 road win. Brian Westbrook ran for 131 yards and had two TDs.

Cleveland, on the other hand, has lost each of their last three games to fall to 4-9 SU (but 7-6 ATS) on the season. The Browns have scored a combined 21 points over the course of their losing streak, and they lost 28-9 on the road versus the Titans last week. Third-string QB Ken Dorsey went 22-of-43 for 150 yards passing with one INT, while Joshua Cribbs was the top rusher with just 24 yards.

The oddsmakers don't expect the Monday nighter to be a close affair - they have the Eagles pegged as big 14-point home favorites. The game's total is at 39 points; Cleveland is 5-7-1 on the OVER/UNDER this year, Philadelphia is 6-7 OU.

    Other Notable Events

The Boston Celtics will be gunning for their 15th consecutive victory on Monday night when they play host to the Utah Jazz. Paul Pierce and company ran their winning streak to 14 games last time out with a 94-82 home win over the Hornets. Pierce had 28 points in that victory. Boston is now 22-2 SU and 14-10 ATS on the season, while Utah has records of 15-10 SU and 13-12 ATS this year.

There are eight other games on the NBA's schedule for Monday night, including Denver at Dallas and New York at Phoenix. As well, it's Charlotte at Atlanta, Indiana at Washington, New Jersey at Toronto, and Milwaukee at Miami, while Minnesota plays Sacramento and Orlando is at Golden State in late-night games.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are just two NHL games on the Monday schedule, with Colorado at Detroit, and San Jose at Los Angeles. The Sharks are now 4-0-1 in the month of December after slipping past St. Louis 5-4 on Saturday. Patrick Marleau scored twice for San Jose in that victory, while Evgeni Nabokov stopped 29 of 33 shots.

Finally, Connecticut and Syracuse are the lone ranked college basketball teams in action on Monday night, with UConn playing host to Stony Brook and the Orangemen getting a visit from Cleveland State. As well, Pepperdine is at USC.

    News from the Wire

TE Kellen Winslow is OUT for the Browns for Monday night due to his ankle injury, while each of RB Charles Ali, LB Beau Bell, WR Cribbs, G Rex Hadnot, RB Jerome Harrison, DE Louis Leonard, LB Shantee Orr, DT Shaun Rogers, DT Shaun Smith, and DE Corey Williams are listed as QUESTIONABLE . . . G Shawn Andrews is out for the Eagles because of a back injury. T Jon Runyan is listed as QUESTIONABLE for Monday Night Football, while LB Stewart Bradley, RB Correll Buckhalter, WR Kevin Curtis, CB Asante Samuel, TE L.J. Smith, and RB Westbrook are pegged as PROBABLE to be on the field against Cleveland.

    A Peek at the Future

The Knicks will be in action out west again on Tuesday night, in a tough matchup against the Lakers. As well, Denver will be in Houston to play the Rockets . . . the NHL's top Tuesday game will also take place out west, with the Rangers in Anaheim to battle the Ducks . . . this week's Thursday night NFL game is Indy at Jacksonville, while Baltimore will travel to Dallas for a Saturday night matchup.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- Brady Hoke is no dummy; he parlayed Ball State's 12-1 season into the San Diego State job-- moving from Muncie to southern Cal is a major upgrade weather-wise, decent upgrade football-wise.

-- You don't think this is a great country? Jeff Farnsworth signed a two-year, $9.25M contract with the Royals this week. Wow.

-- Ill-Chicago upset Georgia Tech Sunday, a good win for Horizon League- Butler only lost to Ohio State 54-51 Saturday.

-- Arizona State nipped IUPUI in OT Sunday; have to keep an eye on IUPUI in Summit League- they could be dangerous in March; ASU was down 16 at the half, before rallying to force overtime.

-- Arizona upset Gonzaga in Phoenix yesterday; Wildcats are 7-2 under interim coach Pennell, with both losses by a single point.

-- Washington lost to Portland last month, barely survived Portland State by a point Sunday, as they struggle getting ready for Pac-10 play, which starts the first weekend in January.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday........

        13) Steelers scored controversial TD with 0:43 left in the game to nip Ravens 13-9, and clinch AFC North title, only TD Pittsburgh scored all day. Rough day for rookie QB Flacco. Better be a rough week for the ref who decided that the ball crossed plane of the goal line.

        12) Cowboys sacked Eli Manning eight times, survived 11 penalties for 108 yards, as they beat Giants 20-8. Romo hurt his back, which is bad news with hard-hitting Ravens coming to Dallas Saturday night.

        11) Falcons ran ball for 175 yards, averaged 8.3 yards/pass attempt, but had to survive three turnovers and a blocked punt before beating Tampa Bay 13-10 in OT. Bucs played without QB Garcia.

        10) After the game, Monte Kiffin told the Bucs he's leaving Tampa to go to Tennessee to coach with his son Lane. He takes a million dollar a year pay cut to leave the NFL.

        9) Lions were tied 21-all at Indianapolis in fourth quarter, but lost to Colts 31-21, to fall to 0-14; they host Saints next week, then make a visit to Lambeau Field, as they search for that elusive first win.

        8) Patriots scored TDs first four times they had ball in their 49-26 win at Oakland; there were four TDs scored in 1:36 in this game, with teams running back consecutive kickoffs back for TDs.

        7) Carolina was impressive in 30-10 win over Denver; Delhomme is back to old form, averaging 9.7 ypa, after couple of dreadful games against Raiders, Lions last month. Panthers are a hot team right now.

        6) Chargers were down 21-3 in Kansas City, rallied for 22-21 win, in process keeping very slim playoff hopes alive. Denver would have to lose at home to skidding Buffalo next week to make Week 17 game against the Chargers winner-take-all for AFC West title.

        5) Why in the name of Joe Pisarcik were the Bills passing with 2:05 left and a 27-24 lead? Disaster ensued, Jets scored defensive TD and the three-way tie atop AFC East remains intact. Patriot fans were a little bit less than enthused with Buffalo's strategy.

        4) Miami struggled to beat the 49ers 14-9, are now 4-23 vs spread in last 27 home games when they were favored. They are 9-5, though, and have a Week 17 showdown with the Jets looming on horizon.

        3) Green Bay averaged 7.3 ypa, was 10-16 on third down, but scored only one TD on three red zone trips, while Jaguars scored TDs both times they were in red zone, and won game between two struggling teams, 20-16, scoring winning TD in last 2:00.

        2) Arizona played a horrific game, allowing a punt return by Berrian for a TD, then a long TD pass to Berrian, and before you knew it, it was 21-0 Vikings and that was that. Cardinals have clinched a woeful NFC West, but are now 8-6 and have a trip to Foxboro next week.

        1) Next Sunday night's Giant-Carolina game will decide who is #1 seed in NFC, after Giants got beaten up 20-8 in Dallas by a desperate Cowboy team. Tennessee-Pittsburgh next Sunday also will go a long way to deciding who the top seed in AFC will be.

New York Knicks at Phoenix Suns [MSG | 9 PM ET]

Knicks: New York head coach Mike D'Antoni returns to Phoenix, where he led the Suns to an average of 58 wins over the last four years. D'Antoni couldn't get them an NBA title though, which seems to be the main reason he left the Valley of the Sun for the Big Apple. His new players are certainly enjoying his fast-paced offensive style, as the Knicks have won two of their last three games on their current five-game road trip, scoring at least 100 points each time. “Our team is on a mission, we’re trying to win as many games as possible,” New York guard Nate Robinson said. “This system is the best, we’re having a lot of fun right now.”

Knicks are 5-24 ATS in their last 29 Monday games.
The OVER is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

Key Injuries - C Eddy Curry (knee) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 110 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Suns (-9, O/U 223): Phoenix is off to its worst start since 2003 under new head coach Terry Porter, which is ironic considering the team's 6-2 start was the best ever for a coach in franchise history. The Suns have dropped five of eight though, going 2-6 ATS during that stretch. They shook up the roster a bit last week with the acquisition of shooting guard Jason Richardson from Charlotte, sending Boris Diaw and Raja Bell to the Bobcats. “I’m just proud to be a part of this (team),” Richardson said. “When it all comes down to it, you just play basketball.”

Suns are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
The OVER is 9-0 in Phoenix's last 9 games overall.

              Key Injuries - C Shaquille O'Neal (personal) is day-to-day.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 119

Colorado Avalanche at Detroit Red Wings (-240, 5.5)

One of the NHL's best rivalries has lost some of its luster since the Avalanche stumbled into mediocrity. Colorado is 14-14-0-1 on the season after a horrible November, but managed to stagger wins and losses in the past month.

Detroit continues to uphold its part of the grudge match. The Red Wings are one of the best teams in the league and picked up their fifth win in the last six games Saturday night. Detroit edged Phoenix 5-4 in a shootout, getting two goals from Johan Franzen.

Those five victories have all been one-goal games, with three of them going to additional time. The Red Wings are scoring just under four goals a game during this stretch, but have allowed 3.33 goals against while bouncing between goaltenders Chris Osgood and Ty Conklin.

“When we get down one or two goals we put everything out there,” Franzen told reporters. “We play better that way than when we have a lead. It gives us confidence we can come from behind. If you do it once, you can do it again.”

If the hatred between these teams is rekindled Monday, Detroit has the chops to weather the storm.

                          Pick: Detroit -240

San Jose Sharks at Los Angeles Kings (+165, 5.5)

Don't look now, but there could be another hot streak brewing in California.

The Los Angeles Kings captured their third win in the past four games with a solid 3-1 victory over Minnesota Saturday night. The Kings defense did a great job holding off the Wild after hanging on to a 1-0 lead for most of the game.

While the offense is scoring under three goals per game, Los Angeles' blueliners are limiting opponents to just 2.7 goals and a league-low 26 shots per game. They gave up 34 shots to Minnesota, but goaltender Erik Ersberg was sharp in his second straight win. He just missed out on a shutout after allowing a goal in the final two minutes of the game.

"Ersberg was great," Kings coach Terry Murray told reporters. "The plays they had at the net were quick plays, hard plays, stuff coming from around the back of the net."

                          Pick: Los Angeles +165

Pick 'n' Roll: Monday's best NBA bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Phoenix Suns (-8, 223.5)

Mike D'Antoni makes his first return to Phoenix since his summer split with the Suns on Monday night, with his Knicks looking for a third straight win on their five-game road trip.

D'Antoni's high-scoring, "seven seconds or less" offense brought Phoenix similar results each of the past three seasons, but the Suns' playoff results never improved, as they lost in the first round to San Antonio last spring.

The Knicks hired D'Antoni in May to pick up the pieces after Isiah Thomas' failed stint as coach and general manager, but the new coach said at the time that he wasn't planning on waiting to start winning.

Even though guard Stephon Marbury remains estranged from the team and top scorers Zach Randolph and Jamal Crawford have been traded, the Knicks (11-12) appear to have improved. D'Antoni's style has quickly taken hold, as the team ranks third in the NBA with 105.0 points per game and second-worst with 106.8 points allowed.

New York has looked good in its last four games, winning three while scoring at least 100 points each time. After a 121-109 victory at New Jersey on Wednesday, they led 43-21 after one quarter and cruised to a 114-90 road win over Sacramento on Saturday.

Under new coach Terry Porter, meanwhile, the Suns (14-10) are off to their worst start since they were 8-13 when D'Antoni was hired in December 2003. Point guard Steve Nash, who averaged 17.5 points and 11.2 assists in the last four seasons under his former coach, is averaging 15.2 points and 8.4 assists this season.

Defense was one of the team's weak spots under D'Antoni, but the Suns haven't been much different under Porter, allowing more than 100 points in each of the last nine games.

Phoenix's roster has undergone changes, as the team traded forward Boris Diaw and guard Raja Bell as part of a five-player deal with Charlotte to acquire swingman Jason Richardson last week. Richardson scored 21 points in his debut Friday, helping his new team to a 113-112 home win over Orlando.

The Suns have won four straight against the Knicks, and Monday's game should again feature plenty of scoring. Both clubs have topped 100 points in their last three meetings.

                            Pick: Over

Denver Nuggets at Dallas Mavericks (-2, 209)

Denver's victory over the Dallas Mavericks last month marked the arrival of Chauncey Billups and the beginning of a run that has the Nuggets off to their best start in 32 seasons.

When Denver takes on the Mavericks on Monday night, however, it will be facing a team that's won seven of its last eight home games and has dominated the series in Dallas over the past 13 seasons.

Denver (16-7) is looking for its fourth straight victory after knocking off Golden State 123-105 on Saturday night. Carmelo Anthony continued his red-hot play with 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field.

After averaging 19.8 points and shooting 40.6 percent in his first 18 games, Anthony is averaging 29.3 points and hitting 54.1 percent during the Nuggets' winning streak.

Billups has sparked a turnaround in Denver, with the Nuggets going 15-4 since his arrival - a stretch that began with the win over the Mavs. The team is off to its best start since also opening 16-7 in 1976-77, its first season in the NBA.

Billups scored 15 points against Dallas on Nov. 7 and is averaging 18.9 points and 7.0 assists with Denver.

Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin returned from a two-game absence due to a sprained left wrist and had 15 points and six rebounds against Golden State. Martin is averaging 8.5 points and 4.3 rebounds in his last four road games versus the Mavericks, but had 18 points and seven boards in Denver's last victory in Dallas - 122-109 on Dec. 6, 2007.

The Mavericks (13-9) lost their first four home games of 2008-09, but improved to 5-1 on their season-high seven-game homestand with a 103-99 victory over Oklahoma City on Saturday night.

"This homestand was needed," said point guard Jason Kidd, who had 22 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in last month's loss to Denver. "We've played pretty well here."

That's certainly been the case for Dirk Nowitzki, who scored a season-high 46 points against the Thunder for his ninth career 40-point game. Nowitzki is averaging 32.7 points during the homestand.

                            Pick: Mavericks
