    Trends and Indexes

    Sunday, December 14

Good Luck on day #349 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads:
    • NCAAF Bowl Season Trends and Indexes 12/20 through 1/8”
    • “NFL Week 15 Trends and Indexes 12/11 through 12/15”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, and the NHL until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, December 14

Eli Manning and the Giants will be looking to bounce back from a rare loss when they play in Dallas on Sunday night. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Giants fell 20-14 to the division-rival Eagles last time out, putting an end to their seven-game winning streak. Manning went just 13-of-27 for 123 yards passing and one TD in that defeat, which dropped New York to 11-2 straight-up and 10-3 against-the-spread on the season. The Cowboys (8-5 SU, 6-7 ATS) are also coming off a loss; they couldn't hold a lead in a 20-13 defeat vs. Pittsburgh. The Cowboys are listed as 3-point home favorites in this Sunday night matchup.

The other key divisional battles on Sunday has Pittsburgh (10-3 SU, 7-6 ATS) at Baltimore (9-4 SU, 10-3 ATS) and Tampa Bay (9-4 SU, 7-6 ATS) at Atlanta (8-5 SU, 8-5 ATS). The Ravens are 2.5-point home favorites against the Steelers, and they can move into a tie for top spot in the AFC North with a win. The Falcons are favored by 3 against the Bucs as they try to bolster their postseason chances.

Also on the NFL's schedule for Sunday: Washington (-7) at Cincinnati, San Diego (-5.5) at Kansas City, Seattle (-2.5) at St. Louis, San Francisco at Miami (-6.5), Buffalo at the Jets (-7.5), Tennessee (-3) at Houston, Green Bay (-1.5) at Jacksonville, Minnesota at Arizona (-3), Denver at Carolina (-7.5), and New England (-7.5) at Oakland. As well, the Colts will be looking to extend the Lions' woes when the teams meet at Lucas Oil Stadium; Indy is favored by 17 points.

    Other Notable Events

Kobe Bryant and his Los Angeles Lakers are back in action on Sunday night, as they'll get a visit from the Minnesota Timberwolves. There are just three other games on the NBA's schedule for Sunday, including a 12:30pm ET matinee featuring New Orleans at Toronto. As well, the Heat will be in Memphis to take on the Grizzlies, while Oklahoma City will continue their Texas swing in San Antonio.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are just three NHL games on the schedule for Sunday, all of them in the evening. The Blue Jackets and Blackhawks get things going at 7:00pm ET in Chicago, while the Wild and Ducks will drop the puck an hour later in Anaheim. The Panthers and Canucks will then finish the week in Vancouver at 10:00pm ET.

Several ranked teams are in action in college basketball on Sunday. The U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix will host of a pair of those teams, as No. 4 Gonzaga will take on Arizona, and No. 20 Arizona Sate will go up against IUPUI. As well, No. 11 Wake Forest will play Wright State, No. 15 Villanova will take on La Salle.

    A Peek at the Future

This week's Monday Night Football matchup sees the Cleveland Browns playing on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles are listed as 14-point home favorites, with the total at 39 points . . . the NBA has five games on Christmas this year, starting with New Orleans/Orlando at noon ET. As well, it'll be San Antonio/Phoenix, Boston/Lakers, Washington/Cleveland, Dallas/Portland.

      Six-pack for Sunday

According to kenpom.com, the six best college basketball leagues so far this season.......

      6) SEC-- Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama all lost Saturday, though.

      5) Pac-10-- Oregon lost at home to San Diego, but Oregon State upset Nebraska in Corvallis Saturday.....

      4) Big 12-- Huskers, Texas Tech, Kansas all lost Saturday, but the Sooners waxed Utah without Blake Griffin scoring a basket (0-3).

      3) Big East-- If you listen to ESPN too much, you'd think all 16 of their teams will be in NCAAs.

      2) Big 11-- Michigan is improved, Minnesota is unbeaten, even the Northwestern Wildcats are 6-1........then there's Indiana...not good.

      1) ACC-- Still think Tar Heels will run table this season; someone explain to me why this league expanded to 12, when no one goes to their football conference championship game?

Sunday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a cold Saturday night

        13) Where is Terrell Owens' next stop, the WWE? I can see him with a metal chair, bashing his tagteam partner over the head, but I can't see another NFL team signing him after the Cowboys get sick of him.

        12) Knicks scored 43 points in first quarter at Sacramento Saturday, as Kings made New York look like the '87 Lakers. Has team ever had worse interior players than Sacramento? What happened to Kings' franchise? Ton of empty seats at Saturday night's game.

        11) I still don't understand why the Heisman Trophy is such a big deal; maybe its because college football doesn't have a playoff system to focus on. To me, such hype over an individual award is stupid.

        10) That said, you know Urban Meyer is going to use Sam Bradford winning the Heisman as a psychological ploy for his Gators as they get ready to face Oklahoma. Cheesy maybe, but it'll happen.

        9) Memphis-Georgetown would have been a great college hoop game if it had been played in March; in December, was even better. Teams went at each other for 45 entertaining minutes, before Hoyas finally avenged their loss to Memphis LY with a 79-70 win in overtime.

        8) Halftime score: Kentucky 36, Indiana 13; going to be a long winter for Tom Crean, but he has an excellent recruiting class for next year.

        7) The son of Titans' coach Jeff Fisher is a DB at Montana-- they'll be playing for I-AA national title next weekend, ironically enough in Chattanooga, TN against the Richmond Spiders.

        6) Next spring, Phillies are going to be in same position Giants were in this summer-- the defending champ no one gives a chance. With the Mets signing K-Rod and trading for JJ Putz, they're back to being the favorite in NL East, which has to delight Charlie Manuel.

        5) Christmas came early in Philly Saturday, as Dionte Christmas had 35 in Temple's upset over Tennessee. JP Prince, one of best players for the Vols, sprained an ankle in practice Friday and didn't play.

        4) Western Kentucky won at Louisville, then beat Georgia, won at Tulane easily, so how do they go to Evansville and lose by 32? They were down 36-13 at the half-- some scores just don't make sense.

        3) Atlanta Hawks (14-9) ended Cleveland's 11-game winning streak, 97-92; in a game the Cavaliers lost by 5, Cleveland was +11 in 19:53 that Wally Szczerbiak played, a significant stat. Lebron was +1.

        2) It is December 14, and already five NBA coaches have been fired, and none of them are Reggie Theus, who would appear to be next on the chopping block. Do the 76ers really think this guy they installed as interim coach is an upgrade over Maurice Cheeks?

        1) This is what college football has come to: Auburn wasn't happy with its coach, so Iowa State has to hire a new coach, even though the Cyclones were 5-19 the last two years. When was the last time a guy went 5-19 and got a much better job?

A team meeting wasn't held in Ames to inform the players what was up, so younger players Chizik recruited are understandably upset, and could transfer, which forces ISU to hire a coach quickly, to keep returning players and their 16 recruiting commitments in the fold.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Lakers [9:30 PM ET]

Timberwolves: Minnesota is 0-3 since firing head coach Randy Wittman, with former VP of basketball operations Kevin McHale taking over. The Timberwolves have dropped eight in a row overall for the second time this season, and they are shooting just 41.8 percent during the skid. “You can’t get much better than layups and we were missing them,” McHale said following the latest loss. “Some of those will go in, but the hanging the head is what we can’t have and that’s what happened. I think we started feeling sorry for ourselves, and that’s unacceptable.”

Timberwolves are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
The OVER is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Corey Brewer (knee) is OUT.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 97

Lakers (-15.5, O/U 209.5): LA has won two straight and 12 of 14, but many of those games have been closer than expected. The Lakers have failed to cover five in a row and seven of nine despite their best start since the 2001-02 season. Kobe Bryant has been a monster in the last two home meetings with the Timberwolves, averaging 40 points, 6.5 rebounds and five assists in a pair of wins that have been decided by a combined 21 points.

Lakers are 4-1-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings.
The OVER is 8-2 in LA's last 10 games overall.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 112

              Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Memphis Grizzlies (NA)

A healthy Dwyane Wade has helped the Miami Heat get off to a solid start to this season after a disastrous 2007-08.

The Memphis Grizzlies, meanwhile, are starting to get their season on track thanks to the emergence of rookie O.J. Mayo.

Wade missed 31 games last season due to various injuries, a big reason why Miami (12-10) finished a NBA-worst 15-67.

This season, Wade has helped lead the Heat to the sixth-best record in the Eastern Conference thanks to his league-best 29.1 points per game.

Rookie forward Michael Beasley, the second overall pick of this year's draft, sat out with the flu on Friday. It was the first game missed this season by Beasley, who is Miami's second-leading scorer behind Wade.

The Heat hope Beasley, who is third among all rookies in scoring (13.9), will play on Sunday.

The Grizzlies (8-15) are led by their own budding first-year star, as Mayo, the third overall pick of the draft, leads all rookies in scoring (20.5).

On Friday, Mayo finished with 14 points in Memphis' 103-96 win over Chicago and top overall selection Derrick Rose. Rudy Gay matched a season high with 29 points, and Hakim Warrick added 21 off the bench.

The win marked the first time the Grizzlies won three straight under Marc Iavaroni, now in his second season as their coach. Memphis, which dropped eight of nine before this run, has not won four straight since winning the final five games of the 2005-06 season.

              Pick: Grizzlies

Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Lakers (-15.5, 208.5)

With their coach fired, a Hall of Famer stepping down from the front office to take over and three losses in four nights, the Minnesota Timberwolves have endured a challenging week.

The Timberwolves (4-18) dropped eight in a row for the second time this season following their 98-86 loss to San Antonio on Friday night. Minnesota committed a season-low nine turnovers but hit just 40.9 percent of its shots and missed six of 18 free throws.

Minnesota is shooting just 41.8 percent during its losing streak. The Lakers (19-3) are holding opponents to 43.8 percent shooting.

Mike Miller returned to the Wolves' starting lineup on Friday after being sidelined four games with a sprained right ankle, scoring three points and grabbing six rebounds. In his last four games against the Lakers at Staples Center, Miller is averaging 18.0 points and 10.8 rebounds.

Kobe Bryant can vividly remember the first of those four visits. Bryant was suspended two games for elbowing Miller in the throat during the Lakers' 100-99 overtime loss to Memphis on Dec. 28, 2005.

This season, though, there hasn't been much frustration for Bryant and the Lakers, as they're off to their best start since also opening 19-3 in 2001-02 - the last time they won the NBA title.

The Timberwolves haven't been able to contain Bryant in their last two visits to Los Angeles. He's averaging 40.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.5 steals in those two wins

              Pick: Over

Columbus Blue Jackets at Chicago Blackhawks (-211, 5.5)

A turn of the calendar appears to have helped the Chicago Blackhawks rebound from a recent slump.

The Blackhawks seek their season high-tying fourth straight win Sunday night as they host the Central Division rival Columbus Blue Jackets.

Chicago (14-6-7) won six of its first nine November contests before stumbling in the final three games (0-2-1), but has rebounded with a 4-0-1 record in December.

Dustin Byfuglien scored twice, including the go-ahead goal in the third period, as the Blackhawks won 4-3 at Colorado on Friday for their third straight victory.

"Huge goal and huge win," said coach Joel Quenneville, whose team is 13-4-6 since firing Denis Savard on Oct. 16. "I thought the way we played over the last two periods was kinda the way we have to play and we played over the last three or four games. It was a necessary win and really put us in a good spot."

Chicago has scored 21 times during the 4-0-1 surge, and that offense has been balanced by solid goaltending from both Cristobal Huet and Nikolai Khabibulin, who have collectively allowed 2.00 goals per contest in that span.

Khabibulin made 18 saves Friday in his return following a six-game absence with a lower-body injury. A winner of four straight decisions overall, he is 6-8-2 with a tie and a 3.39 goals-against average in 17 matchups against Columbus (13-13-3).

Huet, who is 5-1-1 with a 1.99 GAA in seven home starts, improved to 2-1-0 in three lifetime games against the Blue Jackets with a 4-3 shootout victory in Columbus on Nov. 1 in the clubs' first matchup this season.

Chicago's Patrick Kane has four goals and five assists in nine career games versus the Blue Jackets. Last season's Calder Trophy winner as the league's top rookie, Kane has shown no signs of a sophomore slump, leading the Blackhawks with 20 assists and 33 points.

As the Blackhawks try to match their four-game winning streak from Oct. 31-Nov. 9, they'll also be seeking a fourth straight victory at the United Center, where they are 9-1-4 overall. The Blue Jackets have alternated wins and losses in their last eight visits to Chicago.

                        Pick: Chicago -211

Florida Panthers at Vancouver Canucks (-166, 5.5)

Powered by the longest road winning streak in franchise history, the Florida Panthers are climbing up the Eastern Conference standings. To extend that run, however, they must win in a city where they haven't done so since their inaugural season.

Florida looks to win its sixth straight road game on Sunday night when it visits the Vancouver Canucks, who haven't lost at home to the Panthers in more than 14 years.

Florida (14-12-3) got off to a slow start in 2008-09, and was tied for last in the league on Nov. 21. Since then, the Panthers have gone 7-1-2, earning 16 of a possible 20 points to move up to ninth in the East.

"It's a true team effort over the last few weeks to keep this thing going and get ourselves out of the hole we dug a little earlier in the season," said the Panthers' Stephen Weiss after Friday's 3-2 shootout win at Calgary.

Florida's road play has been the biggest reason for its latest turnaround. The Panthers started the season 3-8-1 away from Florida, but have won five straight road games, including the first three of this five-game trip.

But Florida has had no luck in Vancouver (16-11-3). The Panthers haven't won there since a 2-1 victory at Pacific Coliseum on March 7, 1994 - Florida's first season in the NHL. The Canucks moved into GM Place the next season, and the Panthers have gone 0-3-1 with five ties there.

In their last meeting on Feb 1, Florida defeated the Canucks 4-3 in a shootout at home to end a seven-game winless skid against Vancouver dating to Oct. 20, 1999.

Florida's offense could receive a lift on Sunday as Cory Stillman, who has five goals and four assists in 13 games, may return after being out since Nov. 14 with a concussion.

Weiss, though, has been providing a surprising spark to the offense lately, tallying two goals in his last three games after scoring three in the first 22.

He scored the lone shootout goal against the Flames, and also had the deciding goals in a 2-0 win in Edmonton on Thursday and a 4-3 victory in Ottawa on Monday.

"I don't care if I'm getting the winners," Weiss said. "It doesn't matter who, as long as we're winning games."

On Friday, Tomas Vokoun made 35 saves for the Panthers in his first start since Nov. 26 when he was pulled during the first intermission after allowing two goals on 12 shots in a loss to New Jersey.

Backup Craig Anderson is 5-1-0 with a 1.71 goals-against average and two shutouts since Nov. 30, and is expected in net on Sunday despite going 0-3-1 with a 3.17 GAA in four career starts against the Canucks.

                        Pick: Florida +156
