    Trends and Indexes

    Friday, December 12

Good Luck on day #347 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads:
    • NCAAF Bowl Season Trends and Indexes 12/20 through 1/8”
    • “NFL Week 15 Trends and Indexes 12/11 through 12/15”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, and the NHL until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.
Any opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the posting member or BettorsChat.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, December 12

The best of the East will be on display in NBA action on Friday night as hoops and hockey share the spotlight. Here's an overview in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The college football bowl season kicks off December 20, with four postseason games on the schedule. Wake Forest is a 3-point favorite to beat Navy in the EagleBank Bowl, while it's Fresno State -3 vs. Colorado State in the New Mexico Bowl. As well, South Florida is pegged as a big 12.5-point favorite against Memphis in the St. Petersburg Bowl, and the Las Vegas Bowl has Arizona as a 3-point favorite vs. BYU. There is also a single bowl game on December 21, with Southern Mississippi a 4.5-point underdog against Troy in the New Orleans Bowl.

    Other Notable Events

The NBA Eastern Conference's top three teams are all in action on Friday, with Boston hosting New Orleans, Cleveland getting a visit from Philadelphia, and Orlando playing on the road against Phoenix. The Magic, who are 8-2 straight-up (6-3-1 against-the-spread) on the road this season, are coming off a 109-108 victory in Portland. Hedo Turkoglu had the game-winning three-pointer that day.

Also on the NBA slate for Friday: Atlanta at Miami, Toronto at New Jersey, San Antonio at Minnesota, Indiana at Detroit, Chicago at Memphis, the Clippers at Portland, Houston at Golden State, and Sacramento at the Lakers. The 18-3 SU (11-10 ATS) Lakers took care of Phoenix 115-110 in their last game Wednesday.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The Detroit Red Wings will roll into Dallas for a game against the Stars on Friday night in one of seven NHL matchups on the schedule. The Red Wings pulled out a 4-3 overtime win over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night, thanks to a game-winning goal from Nicklas Lidstrom in the extra frame. The Stars fell 5-3 to the Phoenix Coyotes in their last outing, with Marty Turco stopping 29 of 33 shots.

The Rangers are also on the road against the rival Devils on Friday night, while the Senators and Capitals will clash in Washington. Rounding out the schedule: Toronto at Buffalo, Boston at Atlanta, Florida at Calgary, Chicago and Colorado.

Finally, Friday night features just four college basketball games that will receive lines from the oddsmakers: Florida International vs. Miami (Florida), Iowa State vs. Iowa, Wright State vs. Arkansas-Little Rock, and Georgia Southern vs. Drake.

    News from the Wire

The Mets bolstered their bullpen by signing free-agent closer Francisco Rodriguez and then dealing for J.J. Putz in a 12-player trade that involved the Mariners and Indians as well . . . not to be outdone, the Yankees are adding ace starter C.C. Sabathia to their rotation for 2009, and they've been linked to most of the other top starting pitchers on the market too . . . Avalanche forward Joe Sakic broke fingers in a snowblower mishap and will now miss the next three months.

    A Peek at the Future

Top-ranked North Carolina will play host to Oral Roberts on Saturday in college hoops action, while No. 17 Memphis will battle No. 19 Georgetown at the Verizon Center . . . the top NBA games on Saturday are Cleveland at Atlanta and Orlando at Utah . . . the Penguins and Flyers will play an NHL matinee in Philly on Saturday afternoon, while the Capitals will be in Montreal to take on the Habs.

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts on an icy night........

        13) High drama at Soldier Field, as Bears kicked tying FG on the last play of regulation, after Saints went ahead 24-21 with 3:05 left; when it was over, Bears won on a Gould FG, after a really borderline pass interference call put Chicago in position to win. Bears had led game 21-7 at halftime, and survived a horrendous INT by Orton with 5:17 left, when Bears led 21-17.

Really a tough way to lose; when they see film of the interference in OT, New Orleans players/coaches are going to be really unhappy.

        12) On a very cold night in the Windy City, Sean Payton wore a big jacket with a sun visor!!!!! This is a bad idea, wearing a sun visor on a wintry night in the midwest. This is part of why dome teams struggle in cold weather, the coaches show bad judgment in what gear to wear.

        10) Was looking forward to going to out and watching this game, but an ice storm here in America's 2nd-favorite city made going out a bad idea, so followed it on the computer, BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE THE NFL NETWORK ON OUR FREAKIN' CABLE SYSTEM!!! There, I said it again, and yes, I'm bitter about this.

        9) And if I had gone out to watch this game, I sure as hell wouldn't have worn a sun visor, and I would have been inside!!!!!

        8) Let me get this straight, Lincoln High from Brooklyn travelled to Dallas to play a nationally-televised game against Duncanville on a Thursday night? They must have travelled to Texas Wednesday and they weren't in school Thursday and won't be there tomorrow, so kids are missing three days of a school for a high school hoop game? That doesn't seem right, wouldn't you agree?

        7) Reason game was televised is that Lance Stevenson of Lincoln is one of best players in country, and Duncanville has two kids who'll be playing for Oklahoma State next year. Travis Ford was there, as was Kansas coach Bill Self, who is recruiting Stevenson.

        6) If kids could still jump from high school to NBA, I think we would have seen a 16-seed upset a 1-seed in the NCAA tournament- the gap was closing, but the talent difference between those teams now, with NBA-level players on all the 1-seed teams, you won't see it for a long time, if ever.

        5) Charles Barkley was ranting on the air last night that Auburn, his alma mater, should hire Turner Gill as its next football coach. Wonder if that is because Gill is a fine tactician (he has done terrific job with what had been a terrible Buffalo program), or is there another reason?

        4) Rutgers fired AD Mulcahy; you wonder if football coach Schiano will follow him out the door (voluntarily), since Mulcahy seemed to be a gung-ho football guy; his firing indicates a philosophy change in New Jersey. Schiano has been rumored to be next coach at Penn State

        3) Ironic how the NBA screwed Seattle out of the Sonics, after four decades of loyal support, but the team they gave to Oklahoma City is on pace to be the worst in NBA history. Lucky them.

        2) I have a vested interest in this, because Mark Teixeira is 1B on my fantasy baseball team, but why in the name of Andy Messersmith would Teixeira consider signing with the Nationals? If he goes there, I'll puke; big ballpark, lousy team, NL team, so less runs are scored. Just sign with the Angels or Red Sox already.

        1) Call me crazy, but I'm guessing its not a lot of fun being around the Dallas Cowboys every day, or any day. You can't win by having a team of characters, as opposed to a team with character. Thats not a cliche, its a damn fact.

              Tips and Trends
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Orleans Hornets at Boston Celtics [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Hornets: New Orleans begins a three-game road trip at Boston which is followed by games at Toronto and Memphis before heading back home. The Hornets have won three straight since finishing their last road trip with a 101-86 loss at Portland on November 28th. That was only their third road loss of the season though, and they had won three in a row away from home prior to that setback. New Orleans has won three of the last four meetings with Boston both straight-up and against the spread.

Hornets are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games vs. Atlantic Division.
The OVER is 4-1 in New Orleans' last 5 games overall.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Celtics (-7, O/U 188.5): Boston has won 13 straight games as part of the team's best start ever at 21-2, with the latest victory coming easily at Washington on Thursday in a 122-88 rout. “It’s always great to be part of a team that’s potentially mentioned as one of the franchise’s best,” said Celtics guard Ray Allen. Boston will be playing back-to-back nights for the seventh time this season and has gone 2-4 ATS the previous six times under that scenario.

Celtics are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games vs. Southwest Division.
The OVER is 10-3 in Boston's last 13 games vs. Southwest Division.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Houston Rockets at Golden State Warriors [ESPN | 10:30 PM ET]

Rockets: Houston will try to duplicate a 131-112 rout of the Warriors last Friday, only this time they have have Tracy McGrady back in the lineup. The only problem is that Yao Ming (flu) could miss this game and Ron Artest (ankle) will miss a couple games. Regardless, Rockets head coach Rick Adelman isn't making excuses. “We’ve got to win games and keep our heads above water,” Adelman said. “If we’re going to have injuries like this, you just have to win as many as you can.”

Rockets are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games vs. Pacific Division.
The OVER is 8-1 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - C Yao Ming (flu) is questionable.
F Tracy McGrady (knee) is questionable.
F Ron Artest (ankle) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Warriors (NA): Golden State has won two straight following a season-high nine-game losing streak, cashing in on running against weak teams. That obviously won't be the case here against the Rockets, who scored a season-high 131 points in a win against them a week ago. Still, the Warriors have gained a bit of confidence lately. “When we’re aggressive, we win games,” Golden State guard Marco Belinelli said. “For me, when I have my opportunities, I can do something to help this team. I believe in all of our people. We’re young, we like to run, and if we stay aggressive, we can win games.”

Underdog is 21-7 ATS in the last 28 meetings.
The OVER is 10-4 in Golden State's last 14 games vs. Western Conference.

Key Injuries - F Brandan Wright (flu) is probable.
F Corey Maggette (hamstring) is questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Indiana Pacers at Detroit Pistons (-7, 200)

                He's back!

Forward Antonio McDyess (7.7 PPG, 4.7 RPG) was re-signed by the Pistons Monday and later that night scored nine points in 25 minutes in a road loss to the Washington Wizards.

"You could notice the difference without him," Pistons coach Michael Curry told reporters. "That was a big part of losing him in that trade. The things he brought to the table were sorely missed."

Detroit will bring McDyess off the bench Friday and will start Rodney Stuckey (9.3 PPG, 4.5 APG) for a second straight night.

Stuckey replaced center Kwame Brown (3.8 PPG, 4.0 RPG) in the starting line-up Monday and had 10 points and 11 assists.

The Pistons led by as many as 17 points but allowed Washington to outscore them 64-48 in the second half en route to a 13-point setback.

But don't expect to see a similar meltdown Friday.

The Pistons were 4-0 straight up (SU) and 3-1 against the spread (ATS) last season against the Pacers. They beat the Pacers 100-94 in their home opener in October.

                Pick: Detroit

Orlando Magic at Phoenix Suns (N/A)

Jason Richardson is moving to the desert.

Phoenix sent Boris Diaw, Raja Bell and Sean Singletary to the Charlotte Bobcats Wednesday in exchange for Jared Dudley and Richardson (18.7 PPG, 4.1 RPG).

"He's athletic and gives us a really potent offensive player," Suns' General Manager Steve Kerr told reporters. "He's also an excellent defensive player and he's in his prime."

Does this trade make the Suns better? Yes. Will it help them beat the Magic? No.

The Suns will need more than Richardson, assuming he even plays Friday, to get past Dwight Howard's Magic.

Howard (21.2 PPG, 14.5 RPG), who has led Orlando to a 4-1 mark in its last five, is averaging 19 points and 16 rebounds in that period.

Howard doesn't need to worry about going head-to-head in the paint against Shaquille O'Neal (15.4 PPG, 8.4 RPG) either. O'Neal is doubtful for Friday's matchup due to a death in his family.

The Magic are 8-2 SU and 6-3-1 ATS outside the Sunshine State.

                Pick: Orlando

New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils (-125, 5)

The Devils have found their replacement in net until Martin Brodeur is set to come back. Career backup Scott Clemmensen has won seven of his 10 starts and carries a solid 2.19 goals against average into Friday’s contest against the Rangers.

“I don’t know how many more chances I’m going to get,” the 31-year-old netminder told reporters after Wednesday’s 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh. “This is mine right here, and I’m going to try and make the most of it.”

The Devils have won eight of their last nine and the players know they have Clemmensen to thank for the hot stretch.

“It’s been great. He’s a guy that has paid his dues,” New Jersey captain Jamie Langenbrunner said. “It’s great to see him get the opportunity and run with it.”

Meanwhile, the Rangers have been floating around .500 since opening the campaign 10-2-1. Captain Chris Drury has only 15 points owns an ugly minus six plus-minus rating in 31 games.

                              Pick: Devils

Ottawa Senators at Washington Capitals (-150, 5.5)

Looks like all that trade talk finally woke up Jason Spezza. The Senators' forward scored a hat trick last week against Pittsburgh and has five goals in his last four games.

Unfortunately for Sens backers, Spezza and of his teammates weren’t able to light the lamp Wednesday night against the Blackhawks Wednesday night. Chicago won 2-0 and handed Ottawa its second straight loss.

Despite Spezza’s hot streak, Ottawa is tied with Tampa Bay for fewest goals (62) so far this year.

Things have been brighter in the American capital. Washington is six points up on Carolina in the Southeast, it boasts an 11-1-1 record at home and the club just snapped the Bruins’ five-game win streak.

                              Pick: Capitals -150
