Tampa Bay Lightning at Montréal Canadiens (-244, 5.5)

The Tampa Bay Lightning are having a dismal start to the season. Despite a number of off-season changes, the Lightning are the worst team in the NHL. And things aren’t getting any better.

Barry Melrose, who was fired as Tampa Bay’s head coach Nov. 14, refuses to shut up. When interviewed on Toronto’s Fan 590 radio station, Melrose said that the club’s owners insist on making coaching decisions and he was fired because he wouldn’t comply with their demands. He went on to compare new head coach Rick Tocchet to a puppet.

He also reiterated that he doesn’t think No. 1 draft choice Steven Stamkos is ready for the NHL.

“I’m not going to lie to you,” Melrose said when asked if the recent string of losses made him happy. “Yeah it does, and any coach who tells you otherwise is a liar. I hope Tampa Bay doesn’t win a game in the next year.”

And then there’s the issue of Radim Vrbata. After enjoying a breakthrough season with Phoenix last year, he only racked up three goals and three assists this season. He recently asked the team to release him from his three-year $9 million contract, which they agreed to do, and he is on his way back to the Czech Republic.

Anaheim Ducks at San Jose Sharks (-180, 5.5)

The Ducks have the second-best record in the Pacific Division and they have won five of their last seven games. With Jean-Sébastien Giguère back in the lineup after tending to his gravely ill father in his hometown of Montréal, it’s easy to be optimistic about Anaheim’s future.

That is, when they aren’t facing the invincible Sharks. San Jose is the best team in the league and rank in the top five in scoring, power play and penalty killing. Before losing to the Oilers in overtime on Saturday night, they were riding a nine-game winning streak.

The Sharks have yet to lose at home, winning 14 and tying two of their 16 games inside HP Pavilion. Expect them to be fired up for this game against their division rival.
