    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, December 10

The Gonzaga Bulldogs hit the floor in college hoops action on Wednesday night, with full NBA and NHL slates. Here's all the action in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Three teams have clinched playoff spots heading into Week 15 of the NFL season - the Tennessee Titans, the New York Giants, and the Arizona Cardinals. And two of those clubs - the Giants and the Titans - sit atop the current Vegas Super Bowl odds list. New York is still the 2/1 favorite to win the title again this season, with Tennessee right behind them on the list at 4/1 odds.

And the Cardinals? They're farther back at 28/1 odds to win this year's Super Bowl, which puts them 11th in the pecking order. Arizona clinched the weak NFC West division with their 34-10 win over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday afternoon.

    Other Notable Events

A 6-0 start to the season has Gonzaga up to No. 4 in the rankings, and they'll be looking for their seventh consecutive win on Wednesday night when they play on the road against Washington State. The Bulldogs (4-1 ATS) cruised past Indiana for a 70-54 win on Saturday, with Josh Heytvelt scoring a team-high 17 points. The Cougars (6-2 SU, 2-4 ATS) are coming off a 58-52 loss to Baylor last game.

Just two other ranked college hoops teams are set to take the floor on Wednesday night, with Ohio at No. 10 Xavier, and Maine visiting No. 5 Oklahoma.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The anemic Oklahoma City Thunder will be looking to avoid their fifth straight loss on Wednesday night when they play host to the Memphis Grizzlies. Oklahoma City is 2-20 straight-up on the season but at least they've been able to make a little money for their supporters, as they have a 12-10 mark against-the-spread. Memphis is 6-15 SU and 8-13 ATS through 21 games so far this season.

There are eight other games on the NBA's schedule for Wednesday night, including LeBron James and his red-hot Cleveland Cavaliers on the road against the Philadelphia 76ers. As well, it's Indiana at Toronto, New York at New Jersey, Charlotte at New Orleans, Atlanta at San Antonio, and Minnesota at Denver, while Golden State hosts Milwaukee, and the Lakers get a visit from Phoenix.

It's fairly busy around the NHL as well on Wednesday, with eight games on the schedule. Highlighting the slate are Boston at Washington, Pittsburgh at New Jersey, and Calgary at Detroit, while it's also Tampa Bay at Buffalo, the Rangers at Atlanta, Ottawa at Chicago, Phoenix at Dallas, and then St. Louis at Anaheim.

    News from the Wire

Randy Wittman's dismissal by the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier in the week was the NBA's fourth coaching change already this season; Oklahoma City, Washington, and Toronto have made the same move since the start of the year . . . Future Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux has announced his retirement after 355 wins in the majors . . . Padres ace Jake Peavy is still a part of trade rumors.

    A Peek at the Future

There are only three games on the NBA's schedule for Thursday, with Boston at Washington, Charlotte at Dallas, and Portland at Utah . . . this week's Thursday night NFL contest has Chicago hosting New Orleans, with the Bears opening as 3-point home favorites (and the total at 44 points) . . . the big NHL matchup on Thursday night is on the west coast, with the Ducks playing a game in San Jose.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Mets stepped up to plate and signed K-Rod for three years; now they're back to being the favorite in the NL East next season.

-- Of the 24 major leaguers offered salary arbitration this year, only two accepted-- David Weathers, Darren Oliver-- Oliver is 14-3 the last three seasons, pitching for the Mets and Angels, with less hits allowed than innings pitched all three seasons.

-- You can make strong case for Texas as #2 college hoop team in country, behind North Carolina. Longhorns beat UCLA, Villanova in last two games, are deep, athletic and very well-coached.

-- Of the 34 bowls, which would be the worst place for players to go? Detroit? Boise? Shreveport? Toronto? I vote for Detroit.

-- Carolina ran ball for 300 yards Monday night; they haven't lost in Charlotte, and any team that runs the ball like that can win away from home in cold weather. At 10-3, the Panthers are a threat.

-- NFL laid off 150 workers yesterday, as down times for 2009 are expected; league scrapped plans to have preseason game in China, bad news for Robert Kraft, who has business interests there.

Wednesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13.........

        13) Eagles-- If they win out and finish 10-5-1, could still make it to playoffs; what coach has been better in December than Andy Reid? Week 17 home game against the Cowboys would be wild scene.

        12) Buccaneers-- Gave up 300 rushing yards Monday night, go from frying pan to fire when they visit run-happy Atlanta Sunday. NFC South home favorites are 7-2 vs spread in divisional games.

        11) Patriots-- Were fortunate to escape 2-11 Seattle last week; their hardest remaining game is next week at home vs Cardinals, who have already clinched division. They should get a Wild Card slot.

        10) Dolphins-- 1-15 last year, 8-5 this year; am guessing Sparano is NFL Coach of the Year. Their Week 17 game against the Jets in the Swamp could be an early playoff elimination game.

        9) Cowboys-- They seem to embrace chaos; lost in their hideous loss Sunday is fact they led 13-3 in 4th quarter at Pittsburgh, so they've some gas left in their tank. Huge game Sunday night vs Giants.

        8) Cardinals-- Will host their first playoff game in 61 years Jan 3-4. How will they handle last three weeks, with very little to play for?

        7) Falcons-- Didn't run ball much in New Orleans, but Ryan had a terrific day, and Birds still almost won. Huge game with Buccaneers this week-- right now, they're out of playoff slot by a sliver.

        6) Panthers-- Unbeaten at home, and if they win out, seeing as how they play the Giants, Carolina would be #1 seed in NFC. Panthers are suddenly a serious threat to win NFC, but they have to take care of business and beat the Broncos this week.

        5) Colts-- Streaking, getting healthier, the team no one wants to play in playoffs, even though #5 seed is best they can hope for. They've only won two games by more than six points this season.

        4) Steelers-- Were beyond lucky to beat Dallas Sunday, but they do know how to win. Huge game vs Ravens Sunday; teams are tied if Steelers lose in Baltimore. Hines Ward should be center of attention, in light of Raven players possibly having bounty out on him.

        3) Giants-- Without Burress and with Jacobs banged-up, this is ship taking on water; their Week 16 game vs Carolina has been moved to an 8:15 start, which should make season ticket holders happy, since there's nothing like sitting in cold on a December night, getting home after midnight when you have work the next day.

        2) Ravens-- Most underrated team in NFL; they defend well, run it well enough, and Flacco is the QB Brian Billick was always looking for. Ed Reed is on his way to a Hall of Fame career; he's an offensive player who happens to play defense.

        1) Titans-- Back to top spot, but how does Fisher play out last three weeks, with home field through AFC playoffs clinched? QB Collins is proof that in right situation, lot of different QBs can succeed.

              Tips and Trends
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Philadelphia 76ers [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Cavs (NA): Cleveland set an NBA record on Tuesday by winning its ninth straight game by at least 12 points while C Zydrunas Ilgauskas and F LeBron James set personal milestones by breaking team records for most rebounds and steals, respectively. The Cavs routed Toronto 114-94 in their latest game, and they have also won 16 of 17. “We treat everybody the same,” Ilgauskas said. “We respect everybody, but we fear nobody.”

Cavs are 24-5 ATS in their last 29 games overall.
Cavs are 17-5 ATS in their last 22 games vs. Atlantic Division.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

76ers: Philly hopes to get leading scorer and rebounder Elton Brand back after missing the last two games with a sore hamstring. The 76ers are coming off an abysmal shooting performance in a 95-84 loss to New Jersey on Saturday, as they made only 36.4 percent from the field. They had no fast-break points in the second half after totaling 11 before the intermission. “We are continuing to try to play fast basketball and we had no fast break points in the second half,” Sixers head coach Maurice Cheeks said. “It was disappointing because that is how we really want to play. (It’s) a very telling thing.”

76ers are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 Wednesday games.
The OVER is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Elton Brand (hamstring) is probable.
C Samuel Dalembert (knee) is probable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Lakers [ESPN | 10:30 PM ET]

Suns: Phoenix may find it difficult to let Shaquille O'Neal rest following a season-high 35-point performance in a 125-110 rout of Milwaukee on Tuesday. The Suns switched up their offense and played the same free-flowing style employed by former head coach Mike D'Antoni. It resulted in their highest-scoring effort of the season and helped them break a five-game skid against the spread.

Suns are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
The OVER is 7-0 in Phoenix's last 7 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Shaquille O'Neal (rest) is questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Lakers (-9.5, O/U 213.5): LA is coming off a shocking 113-101 loss at Sacramento on Tuesday as Kobe Bryant struggled to score 28 points on 9-of-25 shooting. Pau Gasol was the only other starter to score in double figures for the Lakers, who shot just 40 percent from the field. They also allowed the Kings to shoot 49 percent from the field and end an eight-game losing streak. LA has not lost two straight all season, rebounding from two previous losses by winning the following games by a combined 19 points.

Lakers are 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings.
The OVER is 7-2 in LA's last 9 home games.

Key Injuries - F Luke Walton (flu) is questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

TCU at Indiana [ESPN2 | 8 PM ET]

TCU: The Horned Frogs are riding a six-game winning streak into Bloomington following a 57-48 victory against Wichita State on Monday. Edvinas Ruzgas made all five of his shots - including four from 3-point range - and finished with 16 points while Zvonko Buljan led the way with 17 points and 10 rebounds. "I think it was one of our best games," Ruzgas said. "We played hard the whole forty minutes and didn't let down at any point in the game."

TCU is 5-2 ATS in its last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-2 in TCU's last 9 road games.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Indiana (-2): The Hoosiers are looking to bounce back from a pair of losses to Top 15 teams after winning two straight. They are coming off a 70-54 home loss to Gonzaga on Saturday after getting pounded 83-58 at Wake Forest a week ago on national TV. “They played to win and with a very strong mind-set,” Indiana head coach Tom Crean said about the Bulldogs. “We’ve got to build on it and continue to get better, and there are so many things for us to improve on. The speed of the game is still our No. 1 Achilles’ heel.”

Indiana is 3-8 ATS in its last 11 games overall.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Indiana's last 8 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Verdell Jones (neck) is questionable.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Pick 'n' Roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Bucks at Golden State Warriors

The Bucks aren’t turning heads but they are padding wallets. Despite a dismal 9-13 start, the Bucks have a 15-6 mark against the spread (ATS). The bench has been the key ingredient in the Bucks’ profitable stretch.

In a recent loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, none of Milwaukee’s starters scored in double digits but five of its reserves topped the 10-point mark and the Bucks covered the 13.5 point spread. It had a similar outing against the Chicago Bulls last Wednesday in which Charlie Villanueva stormed off the bench to score 23 points and little-used center Dan Gadzuric had 11 points and 14 boards.

The bench has kept the Bucks’ in contention in most contests, especially on the road. Milwaukee is 9-3-1 ATS but are 4-8 straight up (SU).

Golden State, on the other hand, has lost nine straight and is 3-5 SU in Oakland.

                          Pick: Milwaukee

Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma Thunder (+2, 203.5)

It’s not exactly Lakers vs. Celtics but it’s still worth betting.

Look at it this way, despite featuring two sub .500 clubs this game features two of NBA’s top athletes going head-to-head for just the second time in their short careers.

Second-year forward Kevin Durant leads the Thunder in scoring with more than 21 points per game and rookie O.J. Mayo leads Memphis in scoring with more than 20 points a night. In their first meeting, both Durant and Mayo scored 30 points but Durant's Thunder got the road win over Memphis.

But the question remains, which club has the advantage Wednesday?

The deepest club should have the advantage. Kevin Durant is a sensational player, but he doesn’t have the help around him to alleviate the club's scoring needs. Memphis, on the other hand, has Rudy Gay (19.5 PPG). When Mayo is struggling the Grizzlies can still feel like they have a shot. Gay, who led the club in scoring last season, is an established scorer and is not afraid to take clutch shots when a contest is on the line. Look for Gay to have a big night against Oklahoma City.

                          Pick: Memphis

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at New Jersey Devils (-116, 5.5)

The Devils' only loss since Nov. 15 came with Clemmensen in net in Pittsburgh on Nov. 29. The Penguins (15-8-4) took advantage of Sidney Crosby's second career hat trick to beat New Jersey 4-1, and Clemmensen - who's given up five goals in four career starts against Crosby - was impressed.

"Obviously this whole league is full of talented players, and then there's the elite players who are even more talented," Clemmensen said. "And when those guys are the hardest-working players on the ice, then that is scary good. Just scary good."

Crosby (13 goals, 28 assists) sits behind only teammate Evgeni Malkin (11 goals, 34 assists) for the NHL scoring lead. He hasn't scored in four games since his hat trick, but has recorded seven assists.

The Penguins, however, have lost consecutive games for the first time since Oct. 28-30, and coach Michel Therrien voiced his displeasure after their latest loss. Pittsburgh led Buffalo 3-1 at home on Monday, but came up empty in a two-minute 5-on-3 chance in the second period and went on to lose 4-3.

"At 3-1, we started to play horribly," Therrien said. "It was a horrible performance. That's the truth."

The Penguins are 5-0-1 in their last six games at New Jersey.

                            Pick: Pittsburgh +106

Phoenix Coyotes at Dallas Stars (-132, 5.5)

Ilya Bryzgalov was terrible in net as Phoenix lost 7-1 at Chicago on Sunday night. Bryzgalov has allowed 11 goals in his last two games, with the Coyotes losing both.

After Sunday's contest, Phoenix announced that backup goalie Mikael Tellqvist had a lower body injury. His status for Wednesday's game is uncertain.

"He had a minor injury and it was one of those things where we really couldn't take a chance of him getting hurt more," Gretzky said.

Dallas (10-12-4), meanwhile, got an excellent effort in net from Marty Turco in a 2-1 shootout victory over Colorado on Friday night.

Colorado's Wojtek Wolski converted in the first round, but Turco was perfect the next three rounds to end the Avalanche's unbeaten streak in shootouts at eight. Turco has a 3.38 goals-against average, 1.16 higher than his career average, and the Stars need him to revert to his usual form to make a run in the Western Conference.

Dallas has won four of six, its best stretch of what has been a disappointing start for a team that came within two wins of reaching the Stanley Cup finals last season.

"They're all not going to be masterpieces right now," Stars coach Dave Tippett said. "It's all about getting points."

Dallas will be without winger Sean Avery for the fourth straight contest. Avery drew a six-game suspension Friday for a crude comment regarding his ex-girlfriends dating other hockey players. Avery will eligible to return Dec. 16 against Phoenix, but the organization may not want him back.

To help make up for Avery's absence, Dallas has added center Tom Wandell. The Stars' fifth-round draft pick in 2005, Wandell had been playing for Timra in the Swedish Elite League.

Loui Eriksson, another young Stars forward, had two goals in a 3-2 win at Phoenix on Nov. 15 in the only meeting between the teams this season.

                            Pick: Dallas -132

                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
