    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, December 9

The Spurs, Mavericks, and Rockets are all in action on a Texas-sized night in the NBA on Tuesday. Here's a look at all of the action in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Oklahoma and Florida were the top two teams in the BCS rankings when the dust settled over the weekend, so they'll square off for the national title at Dolphin Stadium on January 8. The early line saw the Gators favored by 3 points over the Sooners in that matchup, and the oddsmakers had the total at a high 72 points.

The other four BCS bowls: Penn State vs. USC in the Rose Bowl, Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati in the Orange Bowl, Utah vs. Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, and Ohio State vs. Texas in the Fiesta Bowl. The Trojans are sitting as 10-point favorites, while it's the Bearcats -1.5, the Crimson Tide -10, and the Longhorns -10 as well.

    Other Notable Events

The biggest games on the NBA hardwood take place in Texas on Tuesday night, with San Antonio at Dallas, and Atlanta at Houston. The Spurs/Mavericks contest matches up a pair of teams with 11-8 records on the season (San Antonio is 10-9 against-the-spread, while Dallas is 9-10 ATS). As well, both teams have been on a roll lately, as the Spurs have won two straight and seven of 10, while the Mavs are winners of four in a row and they've grabbed the victory in nine of the last 10.

The Rockets, though, are ahead of both of their fellow Lone Star State clubs in the Southwest Division standings, and they'll be trying to keep it that way with a win over the Hawks on Tuesday night. Atlanta is coming off a 100-98 road loss to Dallas on Saturday night, with Joe Johnson scoring 32 points in a losing cause. That dropped Atlanta to 12-7 straight-up so far on the year, but they're 10-9 ATS.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are seven more games on the NBA's schedule for Tuesday, including the Cavaliers playing host to the Raptors. The rest of the slate: Detroit at Washington, Utah at Minnesota, New York at Chicago, Milwaukee at Phoenix, Orlando at Portland, and then the Lakers at Sacramento to round out the night.

The NHL offers up just four games on Tuesday, most notably the all-Canadian matchup of Calgary at Montreal. The 16-10-1 Flames are coming off a 3-0 win over the Rangers on Sunday, while the 15-6-5 Habs fell 2-1 to the Devils in overtime on Saturday. The Islanders are also in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, while Vancouver takes the ice in Nashville, and Los Angeles plays in Colorado.

Finally, there is one ranked matchup on the college basketball schedule for Tuesday, with Texas taking on Villanova at Madison Square Garden (tipoff is set for 9:00pm ET). The unbeaten Wildcats pounded Houston Baptist 93-57 last time out, while the Longhorns knocked off UCLA 68-64 in their last game. Other notable matchups include Purdue vs. Ball State, and Davidson vs. West Virginia.

    News from the Wire

Free agent forward Mats Sundin is still looking to sign with a team before Christmas, with the Canucks, Rangers, Canadiens, Flyers, Senators, and Blackhawks all rumored to be interested . . . the complete bowl schedule was released on Sunday night, with the games kicking off on December 20 with four matchups - Wake Forest/Navy, Colorado State/Fresno State, Memphis/South Florida, and BYU/Arizona . . . baseball's winter meetings get underway this week.

    A Peek at the Future

The Hawks will continue their Texas swing with a game in San Antonio on Wednesday night, while the Suns and Lakers will do battle in Los Angeles . . . the top game on the NHL's schedule for Wednesday has Pittsburgh in New Jersey, while the Flames will be back in action against Detroit . . . the Gonzaga Bulldogs will take on Washington State in college hoops action late on Wednesday night.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Bengals were outscored 157-13 in second half of last eight games.

-- Rafael Furcal turned down $9.5M a year from the A's; where is he going to get more cash than that? We'll see........

-- Ravens scored a defensive TD in each of their last three games.

-- Bills lost six of their last seven games, but scored 54 points in the win-- they had three points in each of their last two games.

-- Home teams snapped their slump this week, going 11-5 against the spread, ending a ridiculous 21-54-1 skid against the number.

-- Under was 13-3 in Week 14, as scoring goes down, not always because of the weather; Miami's 16-3 win was in a dome.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

        13) Had to bring my car into the dealer today, and stumbled upon the worst TV show I've ever seen- the Martha Stewart Show. She makes like June Cleaver cooking, baking and talking about Christmas cookies and all the while I'm thinking, "This woman did time in federal prison Why is she baking cookies on TV?" Amazing terrible television.

        12) By the way, if you're at a Monday night football game, easiest way to get shown on TV is to dress up as Elvis. Just so you know.

        11) Notre Dame somehow got a trip to Hawai'i for their bowl, and on the worst TV night of the year- Christmas Eve. Terrific. They're an underdog to Hawai'i by the way-- Irish are 0-9 in bowls since 1994.

        10) There are 120 Division I college football teams-- 89 of the other 119 have won a bowl game since the last time Notre Dame won one.

        9) Harrison Frazar has played 300 PGA tournaments without a win, but he won Q-School this week by eight strokes, and gets his 2009 PGA Tour card, along with 27 other graduates of Q-School. Frazar shot a 59 in the fourth round-- you should get a bonus for that!!!!!

        8) Bronx Bomber pitching coach Dave Eiland was an extra in Kevin Costner's 1999 baseball movie, For the Love of the Game.

        7) Arizona Cardinals will host a playoff game this year for the first time, since......since.......well, 1947, when they played in Chicago.

        6) ESPN has re-hired Barry Melrose to do NHL analysis, after his brief tenure coaching Tampa Bay; he returns to ESPN January 1st.

        5) Arizona ran 56 plays against the Rams Sunday; only nine of them came on third down, thats how easily they moved the ball. Rams, by the way, have scored one second half TD in their last seven games, and could be owned by Rush Limbaugh fairly soon, if Rosenblooms decide to sell the team to people with ties in Missouri.

        4) Atlanta Falcons, playing with a rookie QB, have averaged 7.6 yds per pass attempt or better in their last six games- thats really good.

        3) Arkansas' Bobby Petrino is only SEC football coach who didn't go to a bowl that didn't get fired. There's always a chance Petrino could quit for another job, however, given his track record.

        2) There don't seem to be any real great freshman college hoopsters this season, after OJ Mayo/Michael Beasley last year. It looks like a North Carolina year, but if they slip up, there are lot of other teams that are evenly matched, so it should be a great season.

        1) Odd fact of the day-- When Giants won NFC title game last year at Lambeau Field, they didn't have water or Gatorade on sidelines on a very cold day-- they served their players chicken broth, which kept them both warm and hydrated.

              Tips and Trends
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks [8:30 PM ET]

Spurs: San Antonio is starting to return to form with Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili regaining their health. Parker has totaled 39 points and 16 assists in the last two games - both wins - since coming back from an ankle injury. Meanwhile, Ginobili has averaged 14.3 points in three starts since coming off the bench following an ankle injury. “We’ve had two great games, and hopefully we can keep this going,” Ginobili said. “We just tried to move the ball. It’s the things we always try to do, but sometimes it doesn’t work.”

Spurs are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games overall.
The UNDER is 21-7 in San Antonio's last 28 games overall.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Mavericks (NA): Dallas has been getting a nice spark from Jose Juan Barea lately, as he has averaged 20 points in two starts while helping fill the void left by an injury to Josh Howard. The Mavs have won their last four games thanks in part to the rise of Barea, who has relished his increased role. “It’s just been great just being out there with the guys,” Barea said. “Winning has been the most important thing. My confidence gets higher and higher.”

Mavs are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 home games.
Home team is 4-13 ATS in the last 17 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Josh Howard (ankle) is day-to-day.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Best NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Portland Trail Blazers at Orlando Magic (-5.5, 187)

Only a handful of teams have strong enough big men to matchup against the Magic’s Dwight Howard and Portland is one of them.

The Blazers' rotation of Greg Oden, LaMarcus Aldridge and Joel Pryzbilla has caused problems for opposing interior scorers. The trio is averaging collectively more than 22 rebounds and 30 points a night and has already combined to block 81 shots.

Portland outrebounded the Raptors 48-31 and limited All-Star Chris Bosh to 19 points in Sunday’s win over Toronto. Aldridge led the Blazers with 20 points while Oden added 10 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks en route to the Blazers’ eighth victory in their last 10 contests.

The Blazers are perfect at home (7-0) and have just one loss against the Eastern Conference.

                Pick: Portland

Utah Jazz at Minnesota Timberwolves (NA)

Despite not having Carlos Boozer for its last eight tilts, Utah has managed to stay afloat in the highly competitive Western Conference.

Boozer, who is averaging 20 points and 11 rebounds a night, has been sidelined since mid-November with a quad injury. The Jazz are 6-4 against the spread over that period.

“We’ve been doing a good job holding it down without me and hopefully when I get back we’ll be a lot deeper and be able to run the table a little bit,” Boozer told the Salt Lake Tribune on Sunday.

He expects to be back in the line-up Tuesday night against the Timberwolves.

“As long as I’m comfortable and confident in (the quad) then that's what we’ll go by,” Boozer told reporters.

Even if Boozer isn’t ready to return Tuesday, third-year forward Paul Millsap will be ready to pick up the slack. Milsap is averaging 13 points and eight rebounds and has filled in nicely for his injured teammate. In Boozer’s absence, Milsap is averaging 16.5 PPG and 10.2 RPG.

Utah is 3-1 in its last four road games and was 2-2 last season against the Timberwolves.

                Pick: Utah

Vancouver Canucks at Nashville Predators (-120, 5.5)

Canucks fans will be hoping and praying for Roberto Luongo to have a miraculous recovery after rookie goalie Cory Schneider’s poor performance on Sunday night. Just two days after reclaiming the lead in the Northwest division, the Canucks were beaten for the eighth-straight time by the Avalanche falling 5-4 in a shootout.

Vancouver wasted a great game from winger Steve Bernier, who scored two goals in the Canucks’ fifth loss in six outings.

The Predators, on the other hand, have been successful recently winning four of their last six games. Vancouver is playing its sixth of seven straight road games and should be tired coming into this one.

                              Pick: Nashville

Calgary Flames at Montreal Canadiens (-150, 5.5)

If you consider that the Habs’ best player from last season - Alexei Kovalev - is having a disappointing season, they really aren’t doing all that bad sitting in second place behind the Boston Bruins in the Northeast.

Saturday’s loss against the Devils extended Kovalev’s scoring drought to 16 games and he got a costly penalty at the end of the game which resulted in a Devils’ power-play goal in overtime.

Kovalev’s woes have directly affected Montreal’s special teams. The Habs were 0-for-5 on the power play against the Devils and are 5-for-60 in their last 14 games. Although Kovalev isn’t the only one to blame for this slump, his lone power-play goal this season is well below his standards.

Meanwhile, Calgary’s offence is finally showing signs of life. Mikka Kiprusoff registered his third shutout of the season on Sunday against the Rangers. The Flames have won their last four road games and five of their last six overall.

                              Pick: Flames
