    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, December 5

College football offers up the MAC Championship at Ford Field on Friday night, while the NBA provides a full slate. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

No one has been able to beat the Ball State Cardinals (12-0 straight-up, 9-2 against-the-spread) so far this season, but the Buffalo Bulls will give it a shot in the Mid-American Conference's championship game on Friday night (8pm ET).

The No. 12 Cardinals capped off their perfect regular season with a 45-22 win over Western Michigan on November 25. Ball State quarterback Nate Davis completed 17-of-25 pass attempts for 273 yards on that day, with one touchdown strike. MiQuale Lewis led the way on the ground with 120 yards and three scores.

The Bulls (7-5 SU, 8-4 ATS) had their five-game winning streak snapped by Kent State last time out, falling 24-21. Buffalo actually lost four of their first six games this year before rebounding to win their half of the conference. Still, the oddsmakers have Ball State listed as a big 14.5-point favorite to get the victory.

    Other Notable Events

The Lakers and Wizards have combined for 18 wins so far this season, but unfortunately for Washington fans 15 of those victories sit on Los Angeles' side of the ledger. The Lakers (15-2 SU) are coming off a 114-102 road win over the Sixers in which Kobe Bryant had 32 points. The Wizards (3-13 SU) fell 98-92 to the Trail Blazers last time out despite Antawn Jamison's 22-point performance.

There are 10 other games on the NBA's schedule for Friday, including Portland on the road in Boston. The Blazers (14-6 SU) have won six games in a row; the Celtics (18-2 SU) have won 10 straight games. Rounding out the schedule: Oklahoma City at Orlando, New York at Atlanta, Indiana at Cleveland, Minnesota at New Jersey, the Clippers at Memphis, Philadelphia at Detroit, Golden State at Houston, Charlotte at Milwaukee, and then Toronto at Utah to finish the evening.

    The Rest of the Schedule

Friday's four-game NHL slate is highlighted by the Canucks and Wild in Minnesota. The Wild blanked the Blues 4-0 in their last outing on Wednesday night, with 22 saves from Niklas Backstrom. Elsewhere, it'll be Colorado heading to Dallas to play the Stars, along with Calgary at St. Louis, and Edmonton at L.A.

Finally, there are no ranked college basketball teams in action on Friday night, so hoops fans will have to settle for an Arizona / Texas A&M matchup in College Station to get their fix. South Carolina will be in action against Furman, while SMU hosts Texas A&M International, and Bryant will play Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

    News from the Wire

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards could be forced to give way to J.P. Losman this weekend because of his groin injury . . . Vikings DT Pat Williams and DT Kevin Williams both received four-game suspensions from the NFL, but a restraining order might keep them on the field this weekend . . . the Cowboys are hoping that star running back Marion Barber (dislocated toe) is able to play through his injury.

    A Peek at the Future

Saturday's most notable NBA game sees Utah in Phoenix, while Cleveland will travel to Charlotte, and the Hawks and Mavs will meet in Dallas . . . the Bills technically have a home game on Sunday, but in reality they'll be playing the division-rival Dolphins in the climate-controlled confines of Toronto's Rogers Centre. Most books have this game as a pick'em, with the total listed at 42 points.

      Friday's six-pack
The six NBA franchises worth the most, according to Forbes......

      6) Houston Rockets-- Yao's impact in Asia has to help a lot......

      5) Cleveland Cavaliers-- Will be this high until Lebron leaves.

      4) Detroit Pistons-- Luckily Matt Millen never ran this team.

      3) Chicago Bulls-- Coby Dietrick's old team still worth $504M.

      2) LA Lakers-- Wow, they've had a lot of great players, but how did they get the Clippers to play their home games in Staples?

      1) Knicks-- Won two titles, last of which was in 1973. Isiah was in charge last few years, imagine what they'd be worth otherwise.

      ************************************************** ************

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a chilly night.......

      13) Washington Huskies are hiring USC offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian as their head coach- hadn't heard his name mentioned at all regarding any openings. Weird week for Trojans, losing Sarkisian and then Friday, OJ Simpson is supposed to get book thrown at him by a Las Vegas judge, when he is sentenced to a long jail term.

      12) People in Toronto are paying the Bills $78M for five games in regular season, and three preseason games to be moved to the Rogers Centre, with first regular season game Sunday. People in western NY are worried the Bills might move to Ontario permanently after Ralph Wilson Jr is out of the picture (he is rapproximately 90 years old).

      11) Speaking of Toronto, the NBA's Raptors are actually owned by the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan. Seriously, they are, and they're worth $400M. Pretty good pension those teachers must get.

      10) Best college hoop game of year so far was West Virginia's 80-78 win at Ole Miss Wednesday; terrific game, lot of lead changes. Next year, the teams play again, but in Morgantown.

      9) My favorite player so far this season is WVa's Mazzulla, a guard who banged up his shoulder midway through second half, but he was in there most of the rest of game, despite the arm just hanging at his side-- Ole Miss star Warren scored at will when Mazzulla was off the floor, but he had two critical turnovers late, with #21 on him.

      8) Milwaukee Bucks, at a meager $278M, are worth the least of any of the teams in the NBA. Thats what they get for trading Kareem. The average NBA franchise is worth a cool $379M.

      7) In a perfect world, where I made all the decisions, all the Thursday night NFL games would be divisional rivalries, so it would be easier for the coaches to prepare on a short week. No one asked me, though.

      6) Arizona State has scored seven defensive TDs in last four games- they had four against UCLA last week, tying an all-time record.

      5) Someone tell me who Auburn is going to get as football coach who is as good or better than Tommy Tuberville; the AD down there is going to have to pull a major rabbit out of his hat, with the way Nick Saban has things going at arch-rival Alabama.

      4) According to yahoo.com, the three-highest selling NFL jerseys on Black Friday last week were: Favre-Romo-Eli Manning. Not a lot of call for those Dan Orlovsky or Ryan Fitzpatrick jerseys just yet.

      3) Best red zone offense in NFL? Tennessee Titans, who score 5.62 points per drive inside the opponents' 20-yard line. Best defense in the red zone belongs to the Ravens, allowing 3.54 points/drive.

'2) Not only have Rams only been inside the opponents' 20-yard line 17 times in 12 games, they've scored just 3.82 points/drive on those 17 drives, also the worst figure in the league. Even 0-12 Detroit's red zone average is 5.23. Yuk.

      1) According to Forbes, Nets are 26th-most valuable team in NBA, Cavaliers #5; in two years, when Lebron James is a Net, expect the figures to be reversed, all because of one person.

          NBA

          Friday, December 5

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Friday's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Portland Trail Blazers at Boston Celtics (-7.5, 184.5)

The defending NBA champions will try to win 11 consecutive games for the first time since the 1985-86 season on Friday when they host the red-hot Portland Trail Blazers and one of the players they were pining for before the franchise's dramatic turnaround.

Boston (18-2) hasn't missed a beat early in its title defense, already matching its longest winning streak from last season at 10. The Celtics haven't won 11 in a row since a 14-game run from March 11-April 4, 1986.

The latest victory came against Indiana on Wednesday, as point guard Rajon Rondo notched his first career triple-double with 16 points, 17 assists and 13 rebounds in a 114-96 win.

During their winning streak, the Celtics have blended an efficient offense with their signature defensive intensity. In the last 10 games, they've shot 50.6 percent from the field and averaged 105.4 points. They lead the NBA in scoring defense, allowing 90.3 points per game.

Portland (14-6) has been just as impressive recently, with its six-game winning streak tied with Cleveland for the second-longest active run in the NBA.

The Blazers - 7-0 against Eastern Conference opponents - have also been taking a page from Boston's defensive-minded playbook. They've allowed 86.3 points per game and opponents have shot 43.2 percent from the field during the winning streak.

          Pick: Under

Charlotte Bobcats at Milwaukee Bucks (-5, 186)

Charlotte (7-11) looks to win three in a row for the first time since March 26-29 after beating Oklahoma City 103-97 at home Wednesday. That's the team's longest winning streak since posting five straight to open March.

While still last in the NBA averaging 90.1 points per game, the Bobcats have scored 100 in each of their three victories over their last four contests.

"I think we're getting a little better," Charlotte coach Larry Brown said. "I think individually guys are getting better."

Emeka Okafor had 25 points and 13 rebounds while Gerald Wallace added 21 points and underachieving forward Sean May had 10 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double since the 2006-07 season.

The Bobcats' recent offensive outburst has coincided with having a healthier roster and a more consistent effort to give Okafor the ball inside and take pressure off Wallace (16.6 points per game) and Jason Richardson (19 ppg), who had 18 to surpass 10,000 points in his career.

Milwaukee's bench played a key role in its 97-90 victory over Chicago on Wednesday to snap a four-game losing streak. Villanueva had 23 points and 10 rebounds while seldom-used Dan Gadzuric added 11 and 14 as the Bucks (7-12) outscored the Bulls 40-25 in bench points.

Milwaukee is 6-1 all-time against Charlotte at the Bradley Center.

          Pick: Bobcats

                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Avalanche at Dallas Stars (-130, 5.5)

Sean Avery's comments earlier this week were the talk of the cov.com newsroom. Everyone was waiting with cat-like readiness to slide a “sloppy seconds” reference into their everyday business.

Avery apologized for his remarks, but it's too little too late. The troublesome winger was meeting with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman in New York Thursday. He has missed the past two games due to suspension and will likely sit out Friday's tilt with the Avalanche.

The Stars lost to Edmonton 5-2 without Avery in the lineup Wednesday. However, the team's troubles go far beyond their missing menace.

Goaltender Marty Turco is sketchy between the pipes and allowed four goals on just 21 shots versus the Oilers. He gave up just one goal on 37 shots against Calgary the night before, keeping hockey bettors scratching their heads when wagering on Dallas.

                  Pick: Colorado

Calgary Flames at St. Louis Blues (+115, 5.5)

Keeping with Avery's colorful comments, one of the players referred to in his rant was Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf. The hard-hitting blueliner is dating Avery's ex-girlfriend, Canadian hottie Elisha Cuthbert.

Phaneuf and the Flames had their three-game win streak snapped by the Stars Tuesday. Calgary has won six of its last nine games thanks to solid defense from Phaneuf and steady goaltending from Miikka Kiprusoff.

In those six wins, Kiprusoff has allowed under two goals per night and two of those victories came on the road. The Blues are just 5-5-0-1 at home and have lost six of the last eight games inside Scottrade Center.

                  Pick: Calgary
