    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, December 4

Week 14 of the National Football League season will begin with a whimper on Thursday night, with Oakland at San Diego. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Chargers dropped their third straight game last time out, falling 22-16 to the Falcons. That put San Diego at 4-8 straight-up and 4-7-1 against-the-spread on the season, and they're now three games behind the Broncos for first place in the AFC West division. Philip Rivers went 17-of-30 for 149 yards passing in the loss to Atlanta, and LaDainian Tomlinson was held to 24 yards rushing and one TD.

The Raiders picked up their fourth loss in five games last weekend, as they were defeated 20-13 by the Chiefs. Oakland is one game behind San Diego in the AFC West standings with a 3-9 SU record, while they're 5-7 ATS through 12 games. JaMarcus Russell was good on just 10-of-28 pass attempts for 132 yards in that loss for the Raiders, while Justin Fargas had 82 rushing yards and a score.

San Diego picked up a 28-18 road win against Oakland back in Week 4, covering the 7.5-point spread in the OVER result. The Chargers also won both games against the Raiders in 2007. For Thursday night the oddsmakers have San Diego listed as a 9.5-point home favorite, with the game's total pegged at 42.5 points.

    Other Notable Events

The Denver Nuggets destroyed the Toronto Raptors 132-93 on Tuesday night, and they'll be looking to pick up another impressive win on Thursday night when they get a visit from the San Antonio Spurs. Chauncey Billups picked up 24 points and 14 assists in that win, while Carmelo Anthony was good for 23 points.

The Spurs are coming off an 89-77 loss to the Detroit Pistons, which put them at 9-8 SU and 8-9 ATS on the season. Denver is now 13-6 SU and 12-6-1 ATS. The other game on the NBA's schedule for Thursday is a marquee matchup as well, as Dirk Nowitzki and his Dallas Mavericks will play host to the Phoenix Suns.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The NHL has 10 games on tap for Thursday, including the Rangers at the Bell Centre in Montreal. The Canadiens won a wild game against Atlanta on Tuesday night, taking a 3-0 lead and then needing a couple of third-period goals for a 5-4 win. That improved the Habs to 14-6-4 this year, and 5-3-2 in their last 10 games.

Also on the ice on Thursday: Pittsburgh at Carolina, New Jersey at Philadelphia, the Islanders at Washington, Vancouver at Detroit, Buffalo at Florida, Boston at Tampa Bay, Colorado at Nashville, Toronto at Phoenix, Columbus at San Jose.

There's one college football game on the schedule for Thursday, with 5-6 Louisville taking on 6-5 Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights (6-4 ATS) are listed as 10-point favorites for this one, with the total at 51 points. The Cardinals are 4-6 ATS.

Finally, the top college basketball matchup on Thursday has No. 12 UCLA taking on No. 8 Texas in Austin. As well, No. 2 Connecticut is in Buffalo, while No. 6 Oklahoma hosts Southern Cal. Other games involving ranked teams: No. 17 Villanova vs. Houston Baptist, and No. 19 Arizona State vs. Jacksonville State.

    News from the Wire

Rockets guard Tracy McGrady is now reportedly going to miss three weeks with his sore knee, instead of just one week . . . Kings guard Kevin Martin returned from his ankle injury on Tuesday night . . . Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo is back skating and could return from his groin injury earlier than expected . . . Blackhawks goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin could be back in action this weekend.

    A Peek at the Future

The action picks up around the NBA on Friday, with 11 games on the schedule. Notable matchups include Philadelphia at Detroit, Portland at Boston, and Toronto at Utah, while the Wizards could be in for a pounding when they get a visit from the Lakers . . . the Gators are favored by 9.5 points in the SEC Championship Game for Saturday afternoon, with the total for the game at 51.5.

Thursday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13

        13) Notre Dame-- Got outgained 449-91 at USC, but with Weis still having seven years left on his $30M contract, he was too expensive to send away-- will 6-6 Irish go to the Sun Bowl?

        12) Arizona State-- Scored 34 points without scoring an offensive TD, as defense tied national record with four TDs. Could become the first team ever to lose six games in a row and still go to a bowl game.

        11) Bowling Green-- Fired Gregg Brandon after a 6-6 mark in his 6th season as Falcons' head coach; his overall record was 44-30, 31-17 in MAC, with three bowl appearances. Who the hell do they think they are, Tennessee or Auburn? This coaching stuff is getting crazy.

        10) Virginia Tech-- Watching coaches celebrate after they held off the rival Cavaliers in Blacksburg, you get the idea this is best coaching job by Beamer and his staff in many years- they're just not that good, but they'll play for the ACC title this weekend. Hokies are 4-3 this year in games decided by five points or less.

        9) Tennessee- Their lack of patience is sad; their financial resources are impressive. Good luck, Lane Kiffin, you're going to need it.

        8) Georgia Tech-- Running the ball isn't out of style after all; Jackets ran ball for 472/409 in last two games, against Miami/Georgia. Wow. Wonder if the gurus in South Bend are taking note of this coach.

        7) Rice-- Really fun to watch, but a typical C-USA team; they won by two TDs against Houston, but gave up 634 yards in the process. Some team is in for rude awakening when they play Owls in a bowl.

        6) Oregon-- What a program they've built; 385 rushing against rival Beavers, on a day that was supposed to be Oregon State's coronation as Pac-10 champs. One of their backs had 200+ yards at the half.

        5) Clemson-- Stumbled on terrific young coach, and are smart enough to name Dabo Swinney full-time coach, making him the fifth coach in Clemson history that is an Alabama alumnus. Tigers won four of last five games- senior-laden backfield should be tough in a bowl.

        4) Sun Belt winner-- Will face Southern Mississippi in New Orleans Bowl Dec 21st. Troy plays Arkansas State at home Saturday; from what I can tell, its winner-take-all for the conference championship.

        3) Alabama-- 36-0 win over Auburn sent Tuberville packing a year after he signed a 5-year extension; quite a season for Crimson Tide and their senior QB Wilson. Can shock the world by beating Gators in SEC title game, but what would Saban do for an encore?

        2) Oklahoma-- In last five games, they've scored 58-62-66-65-61 and three of those five teams are going to a bowl. Missouri lost 40-37 on neutral, sloppy field to Kansas last week-- same field this week.

        1) Florida-- I'll be very curious to see what Tim Tebow does in NFL; am not convined he can't play QB there. What he does for Gators now is not what NFL quarterbacks do, but thats not to say he can't do other things, too. If he comes back next year, he'll go down as one of best college signal callers of all-time.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Best NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Suns at Dallas Mavericks (N/A)

The Mavericks have finally reached the .500 mark after losing five of their first seven games. Since then, Dallas has won six of its last seven and its only loss came against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Dirk Nowitzki is still the man in Dallas and is leading the Mavericks in points (23.9) and rebounds (8.8). But its reserve guard Jason Terry’s recent production that that has ignited Dallas.

Terry has led the Mavs in scoring in five of their last six wins and is averaging 20 points and four assists off the bench. Terry, when on the floor with Jason Kidd, also creates one of the league’s most productive backcourts.

Fortunately for Dallas, the Suns are certainly not a strong defensive club. In fact, Phoenix has surrendered more than 100 points in their last three games, including back-to-back setbacks to the lowly Miami Heat and New Jersey Nets.

                Pick: Dallas

San Antonio Spurs at Denver Nuggets (-4.5, 191)

The Spurs’ big three that consists of Tim Duncan (20.9 PPG, 10.2 RPG), Tony Parker (23.1 PPG, 6.0 APG) and Manu Ginobili (13.4 PPG, 2.8 APG) are healthy and starting to play like the defensive-minded team that fans love to hate and opponents hate to play.

“We deserve some respect,” Ginobili told reporters. “We’ve earned it. We’ve got a long way to go, and we’re going to get better and better.”

San Antonio’s game plan has always revolved around defense and nothing has changed this season. It has won seven of its last 10 games and has held six of its last 10 opponents to less than 100 points. In fact, the Spurs are ranked fifth defensively after surrendering less than 93 points a night.

“We’ve started to defend again,” Tim Duncan told reporters. “That’s the main thing.”

San Antonio shouldn’t have trouble hanging around against the Nuggets. Denver has eight wins its last 10 games but only one of those came against a team with a winning record.

                Pick: San Antonio

                    Thursday, December 4

Notes on the best games on today's card........most of which are first of the conference games

Valparaiso lost its Horizon opener in Cleveland Tuesday, shooting 31% with 22 turnovers, but they beat Youngstown State twice LY, 77-58 at home, 67-61 here. Penguins are 0-4 vs D-I teams, losing last two games by total of three points. Crusaders lost last four games, allowing 72.3 pg.

Oklahoma won pair of games in NYC last week, beating UAB, Purdue after trailing both games at half; they also beat Davidson 82-78 at home. USC lost by hoop to Seton Hall after leading by 15 at half; they're 5-2, also losing to Missouri, allowing 54.6 ppg in their wins, vs mid-majors. Trojans lost 83-72 to Missouri on a neutral floor.

St Mary's comes east after winning two of three in Anaheim tourmey; Gaels scored 79+ points in its three wins, 62 in its loss, with Mills 0-9 from arc in loss to UTEP. Kent State was spunky but winless in Texas tourney, losing to Illinois, Texas A&M, then losing by 27 at Kansas in weird scheduling move two days later. Tough week for Golden Flashes.

Home side won both regular season meetings in Butler-Cleveland State series LY, then Bulldogs (-10) beat CSU 70-55 in Horizon tourney. This could be where torch is passed for top team in league. Vikings are 5-2, but they haven't beaten anyone good. Butler is 4-0 vs D-I teams, giving up an average of 53.8 ppg, beating Northwestern, winning at Drake.

Home side won both Wright State-Green Bay games LY, with Raiders winning 71-67 at home, losing 52-49 here. Wright State is 0-4, scoring an average of 57.8 ppg, not good. Green Bay beat UMass by 17, but also lost to D-II Rollins by 17, so who the hell knows about these teams?

Home side won both Detroit/Wisc-Milwaukee games LY, as Panthers made 32-39% from floor in the two games. Detroit is 3-2, scoring exactly 62 points in each of its last three games, 58.8 ppg overall. Panthers lost last four games vs D-I foes, with all four losses by 13+ points.

Texas is 5-1, with only loss by a point to Notre Dame in Maui- they've beaten St Joe's, Oregon for best two wins. Big 12 home faves are 11-11 in non-league games this year. UCLA is 4-1, losing 55-52 to Michigan on neutral floor-- this is their first true ropad game of season. Pac-10 dogs are 4-5 against spread this season.

Oklahoma State had rough time at Disney, losing to Michigan State and Gonzaga before beating Siena, now they head to the Pacific Northwest to face Washington team that is 3-3, with all three wins by 15+ points. Pac-10 home favorites are 10-17 vs spread; Big 12 road dogs are 4-3.

Charleston shot 50%+ in both games vs Elon LY, but lost in double OT here (87-86, +2). Cougars just upset South Carolina at home, are 5-1 so far, also beating pretty good TCU team. Elon is 0-3 vs D-I teams, with 17-point loss at UT-Martin a red flag. Charleston has all five starters back from LY, so they're still young, but young with experience.

NC-Greensboro beat Citadel twice LY, 84-54 here (-19), 74-63 on road in game that was 47-18 at halftime. Citadel is 1-3 vs D-I teams, winning last game at Charleston Southern. UNCG is 0-3 vs D-I teams, losing at Charlotte (77-59), Central Arkansas (73-60), NC State (79-52).

Morehead State won six of last eight games vs UT-Martin, with the dog 7-3 vs spread in last ten series games. Skyhawks lost four of last five at Morehead, with losses by 2-6-22-5 points. Martin is 1-3 vs D-I teams, losing to Tennessee (27), Arkansas State (9), USC (27). Morehead is 1-6 after beating Central Florida in its last game.

Eastern Kentucky won five of last six games vs Murray State, winning four of last five series games played here; Racers beat Western Kentucky by 28 (Hilltppers just beat Louisville, Georgia), so they're pretty good. EKU lost by 14 at Texas Tech, then won its last game 69-57 at Akron.

SE Missouri State beat Austin Peay 121-116 here in double OT LY, the second win in last ten series games for SEMO. Peay won three of its last five visits here, with wins by 4-2-7 points. Governors are 2-2 vs its D-I opponents, beating Belmont (86-84), Georgia Southern (77-66), losing at home to Ohio, by 8 at Evansville.

Tennessee State won six in row, nine of last ten vs Eastern Illinois, with three of last four wins by 7+ points; Tigers won last three visits here by 3-16-2 points. TSU just lost by 28 at home to Belmont- they lost by 3 at Loyola MD, beat Northern Illinois by a hoop. EIU is 0-4 vs D-I foes, losing twice to IPFW, in OT there, by a hoop at home.

                        #9 UCLA at #8 Texas [ESPN2 | 9 PM ET]

UCLA: Having stumbled against Michigan and been denied the chance to face Duke in the 2K Sports Classic, the Bruins will use this matchup at Texas to gauge their readiness for the Pac-10. A backcourt duel between Darren Collison and Texas star A.J. Abrams highlights the game. Collison is averaging 15 points and 4.8 assists per game and his ability to get to the basket will cause a lot of problems for the Longhorns defense.

UCLA is 1-6 ATS in its last 7 vs. Big 12.
UCLA is 1-6 ATS in its last 7 games following a ATS win.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Texas (-5): After a tough one-point loss to Notre Dame, Texas rebounded to hammer both Oregon and Rice. As expected, A.J. Abrams leads the Longhorns charge, averaging 15.8 points per game. Interior scoring isn’t a major weapon for Texas since the Longhorns can rely on perimeter shooters such as Abrams, Damion James and Justin Mason. They will need to be on the mark tonight since UCLA is as good as any team in the country when it comes to defending the 3-point line.

Texas is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 vs. Pac 10
Texas is 1-5 ATS in its last 6 Thursday games.
