Daily Sports Roundup

A single college football game and plenty of hoops action are on the sports schedule Wednesday. Here's a look at the games in your Daily Sports Roundup.

The Gridiron Spotlight

Wednesday's lone college football game between middling Sun Belt conference teams actually has some meaning - the winner becomes bowl eligible. Both Middle Tennessee and Louisiana Lafayette are 5-6 straight-up on the season, and will be gunning to get to the .500 mark with a win in this game Wednesday.

The Blue Raiders have won three games in a row over Louisiana-Monroe, Western Kentucky, and North Texas, trouncing the Mean Green 52-13 in their last outing on November 22. The Ragin' Cajuns are going in the other direction right now, with three consecutive losses versus UTEP, Florida Atlantic, and Troy.

Still, the oddsmakers opened Louisiana-Lafayette as a 4.5-point home favorite in this contest, with the total sitting at 57.5 points. The Ragin' Cajuns are 7-4 against-the-spread this season and 7-4 on the OVER/UNDER. The Blue Raiders have been less lucrative at 5-6 ATS, and they're at 4-7 versus the totals this year.

Other Notable Events

LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers will be looking for their sixth straight win on Wednesday night when they play host to the New York Knicks. The Cavs (14-3 SU, 13-4 ATS) got past the Bucks 97-85 on the road in their last outing, with James scoring 32 points in the win. Zydrunas Ilgauskas picked up 23 points.

The Bucks return to action on Wednesday as well, as they get a visit from the Bulls. There are nine other games on the NBA schedule, including Memphis at Atlanta, Portland at Washington, the Lakers at Philadelphia, Minnesota at Orlando, Indiana at Boston, Phoenix at New Orleans, the Clippers at Houston, and Miami at Utah. As well, the lowly Thunder and Bobcats will meet in Charlotte.

The Rest of the Schedule

The NHL offers up five games on Wednesday night, including an Atlantic Division clash between the Penguins and the Rangers in New York. The Rangers were blanked 4-0 by the Panthers in their last outing, while the Pens are coming off a 4-1 divisional win over the Devils. Rounding out the night's schedule: Atlanta at Ottawa, St. Louis at Minnesota, Anaheim at Chicago, and Dallas at Edmonton.

Finally, in college basketball action top-ranked North Carolina will put their unbeaten record on the line when they take on No. 13 Michigan State. The Tar Heels pounded N.C. Asheville 116-48 last time out to improve to 7-0. Those overmatched Bulldogs will take on No. 10 Tennessee on Wednesday, while No. 3 Pittsburgh has a date with Duquesne. Other notable games on tap: Auburn vs. No. 14 Xavier, Indiana vs. No. 15 Wake Forest, and Cornell vs. No. 16 Syracuse.

News from the Wire

Rockets guard Tracy McGrady is planning on sitting out for the rest of the week because of his sore knee . . . the Tennessee Volunteers have officially named Lane Kiffin as their new football coach . . . the Angels offered arbitration to both first baseman Mark Teixeira and closer Fernando Rodriguez, while the Yankees didn't offer arbitration to either outfielder Bobby Abreu or pitcher Andy Pettitte.

A Peek at the Future

Thursday's college football game has Rutgers pegged as a 10-point favorite against Louisville, while unbeaten Ball State is a 14.5-point favorite on the gridiron against Buffalo on Friday in the MAC Championship . . . there are just two games on the NBA schedule for Thursday: Phoenix at Dallas, and San Antonio at Denver . . . Thursday's top NHL matchup has the Rangers in Montreal.

Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Giants better not lose Antonio Pierce because of legal hassles; he played in 992 of 1,017 opposition plays last season, and calls the defensive signals. Losing him would be huge.

-- How do the Bengals not have an indoor practice facility? College teams have them-- how can an NFL team not? No wonder they're considered a joke of a franchise.

-- Speaking of colleges/practice facilities, if Cincinnati Bearcats do not build an indoor facility by next year, Coach Kelly's buyout gets cut in half, and he would be more likely to bolt for a better job.

-- 12 of the top 16 freshmen in college hoop LY are now in NBA, so we're learning lot of new names, faces as the season begins.

-- Duke went into West Lafayette and simply kicked butt, beating Purdue 76-60, a very disappointing night for the Boilermakers.

-- Miami had double digit lead at home vs Ohio State last night, but McClinton, their best player, was tossed from game (horrible call) for throwing a punch that wasn't a punch, and Buckeyes rallied in second half for a surprising 73-68 win. Tough loss for Miami.

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) I'm thinking that if agents are making 4% of a guy's huge salary, part of their responsibility is educating their client on gun laws for where they live-- lot of pro athletes carry guns, because they carry a lot of money (whether that is a good idea or not, I'll leave up to you). Making sure any firearms are licensed would be an important detail.

12) Braves acquired Javier Vazquez from White Sox Tuesday night, as Pale Hose begin to re-work their team. Chicago starting pitchers have logged ton of innings over last five years, now they're going to get younger, and this trade opens a slot for a younger pitcher.

11) Winter meetings are in Vegas (America's favorite city) next week, so expect ton of activity in baseball when that starts Monday,

10) Speaking of Vegas, looks like I'm heading there on vacation next year, my first trip to the desert in ten years. Anyone with ideas or suggestions on places to stay/things to do, let me know.........

9) I'm not of fond of coaches apologizing to fans after a bad game, the way Rick Pitino did after Sunday's loss to Western Kentucky. Just doesn't seem like the right thing to do, especially this early in season.

8) Golfer Adam Scott got hurt surfing, and is out of Australian PGA this weekend. How do you get hurt surfing?

7) Eight of the top 25 college hoop teams in this week's poll are from the Big East conference, which begs the question as to how many will make the Field of 65 in March? Hard to imagine nine or ten-- how do you justify a 9th-place team maybe winning a national title?

6) Bowl games don't start until December 20, but there are four that day, and 34 in all this season. 68 of the 120 D-I teams go bowling; the other 52 coaches update their resumes.

5) West Coast Conference teams (Gonzaga/St Mary's league) have covered 26 of their first 37 lined games this season. Excellent start.

4) Ralph Sampson III is a freshman at Minnesota- he played against his dad's alma mater last night, as the Gophers hosted Virginia.

3) January 1 will be debut for the Baseball Channel, a long overdue TV station that will be 24/7 baseball, and it will be on basic cable, unlike another league's TV station, which I won't mention today.

2) Oh yes I will-- Week 16, huge game on both sides-- Ravens are in Dallas, two marquee teams, and the game is on the NFL Network, so if you want to see it, you have to go to a bar (Graney's in Albany has 37 TVs, good food and terrific bartenders) or get DirecTV to see it. The game is on Saturday night December 20, and its a game all NFL fans would like to see. Too bad a lot of them won't be able to.

1) Back to the Baseball Channel for a minute-- would really like to be able to see some Japanese League games, if that is possible, to see if these teams are any good. Wouldn't even need announcers-- just good set of graphics. And Winter League ball, too. Would be fun to see.

Lakers (-7, O/U 200): The Lakers saw their seven-game winning streak end with a stunning 118-117 loss at Indiana on Tuesday. LA eclipsed the century mark for the eighth consecutive game against the Pacers but allowed a season high in points, including 32 in the fourth quarter. Kobe Bryant scored 28 points in the loss. It could be more tough sledding for Lakers backers tonight, as they are just 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Philadelphia.

76ers: The 76ers ended a four-game losing streak with a 103-95 road win in overtime at Chicago on Tuesday night. The Sixers had a team meeting during Saturday’s practice, which came after a 24-point loss to the Celtics in Boston. They decided they had to defend to win. The Sixers’ steals are down from a year ago, which is producing fewer fast-break opportunities and more half-court opportunities that the Sixers aren’t converting. The new defensive mindset worked on Tuesday, as Philly held the Bulls to 95 points, including just 88 in regulation.

The Hawks are one of the season’s biggest surprises at 10-6, but they’ve had a knack for letting opponents hang around rather than closing out strong.

“I don't like games to get that close,” Hawks coach Mike Woodson told reporters after Saturday’s 102-98 narrow win over the Washington Wizards. “We make it close coming down the stretch.”

Clubs like the Hawks, who rely heavily on the long ball, have a tendency to lose their legs down the stretch. The Hawks are ranked first in three-point field goal percentage (41.9 percent), but shoot just 44 percent from the field.

Notes on the best games on today's card........

Fordham is 0-5 after losing all five starters from LY's team, and they've only played one road game, losing by 39 at Villanova. A-14 road dogs are 4-9 vs spread. Hofstra is 3-1, but their three wins are by a combined total of eight points. CAA home favorites are 4-2 against the spread.

Penn State is 6-1, losing only to Rhode Island; they won only road game, at Penn, but really haven't beaten anyone good. Big 11 road dogs are 5-1 vs spread. Georgia Tech is 4-0 against collection of stiffs. Home faves from the ACC are 11-9. ACC/Big 11 challenge is 3-3 so far; underdogs are 5-1 vs spread in those games.

Maryland lost its last two games at Disney (by 21 to Gonzaga, by 27 to Georgetown) after 4-0 start. Michigan is 5-1, but needed OT in last game to beat woeful Savannah State. Wolverines' only loss is by 15 vs Duke. Big 11 road underdogs are 5-1. ACC home favorites are 11-9 vs spread.

Miami OH is 2-3, but losses were at UCLA-Pitt-Xavier- this is the fifth road game in row for Red Hawks. MAC road underdogs are 16-8 vs the spread. Temple lost two of last three games (Temple, at Buffalo); they are 0-2 when they allow more than more than 65 points. A-14 favorites are 5-11 vs spread when playing at home.

Ark-Little Rock is 5-0, winning road games at Cal Poly, Pepperdine and beating Creighton (71-69) at home. Sun Belt road underdogs are 13-13 vs spread. Missouri State is 2-2, 1-1 at home, beating Arkansas, losing to Utah by 12. MVC home favorites are 9-5 against the pointspread.

Xavier (-9) won 80-57 at Auburn LY, leading 42-25 at the half; Xavier is 6-0, allowing 57.7 ppg in last three games, beating Missouri, Memphis, Virginia Tech and Miami OH in last four. Auburn lost in OT to Dayton team that was 0-24 from arc- their other losses are by 4,6 points.

West Virginia drilled Iowa by 18 in Vegas Friday, then led Kentucky by 10 at half Saturday, before imploding in second half, losing by 11; lot of travel for Mountaineers, going from Vegas to Oxford to play Ole Miss squad that is 5-1, losing by 11 on neutral court to Utah. Big East clubs are 5-2 vs spread in non-conference road games.

Northern Iowa (-1.5) won 61-48 at Iowa State LY, Panthers are 4-2, 3-0 at home against bunch of stiffs- they're 0-2 when allowing 70+ points. Cyclones are 4-1, losing by point at Hawai'i. Big 12 road underdogs are 2-0 vs spread. MVC squads are 9-5 against spread as home favorites.

North Carolina is 7-0, winning only true road game at Santa Barbara by 17; Hansbrough's leg is still an issue, soi he may not play here. Spartans lost to Maryland at Disney, then won last two games, beating Wichita State, Oklahoma State. ACC road favorites are 2-4 against spread-- this game is at Ford Field in Detroit, not East Lansing.

Northwestern is 4-1, losing by 4 at Butler after they led by 9 at half; the Wildcats' four wins are vs stiffs. Florida State is 7-0 after beating UNLV, Cal in Vegas over weekend; the Seminoles also have wins at Jacksonville (by 2), LaSalle (by 4). Big 11 home teams are 14-8 against the spread.

California is 5-1, losing to Florida State in Vegas Saturday; Golden Bears have home wins over Pacific (by 12), San Francisco (13). Pac-10 home favorites are 9-17 against spread. DePaul is 4-0, winning only road game 67-63 at Illinois-Chicago, which is a crosstown game, not real road game.

Loyola, MD won four of last five games vs Siena, winning last two here by 1-29 points, but they lost to Saints at MAAC tourney in Albany LY after beating Siena twice during season. Loyola is 2-5, scoring 64 points or less in four of last five games. Siena went 0-3 at Disney over weekend this is their first true road game of season.

Appalachian State beat Furman twice LY, 84-66 here, 90-77 at home; so far this season, ASU is 0-2 on road, losing 108-101 at UNC-Wilmington in OT, then 95-80 at Niagara. Paladins are 0-3 on road, losing by 11-20- 32 points at Charleston Southern, Duquesne, Notre Dame.

Indiana: It’s been a tough start to the season for the Hoosiers, who were blasted by both Notre Dame and St. Joseph's and beat tiny Chaminade by only two points. Indiana did rebound with a 15-point triumph over Cornell in its last game. Freshman power forward Tom Pritchard has led the way in the early going. Pritchard’s 23-point effort against Cornell marked the fourth time in the first six games that he led the Hoosiers in scoring. He also paced IU in rebounding four times in the opening six games.

The Demon Deacons are shooting better than 50% from the field by pounding the ball inside to the likes of 7-foot junior Chas McFarland, 6-9 James Johnson, and 6-9 freshman Al-Farouq Aminu. However, except for sophomore Jeff Teague, the Deacons struggle from three-point range.

#1 North Carolina vs. #12 Michigan State at Ford Field [ESPN | 9:15 PM ET]

North Carolina (-9.5): After demolishing Notre Dame on a neutral court, the Tar Heels travel to Detroit for another big test against Michigan State. With Marcus Ginyard injured, Danny Green moved into the starting lineup and caught fire on the Heels’ trip to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational. Green scored 58 points in the Heels’ victories over Chaminade, Oregon and Notre Dame in the Maui Classic. Tyler HanXXXough missed the first couple of games with a stress condition in his right leg but will likely start tonight against the Spartans.

Goran Suton, the Big Ten’s No. 1 returning rebounder, has missed three games with a knee injury and probably won’t be on the floor tonight. That could be a big problem against the Tar Heels big front line. The Spartans will rely heavily on Raymar Morgan, who leads Michigan State in scoring at 17 points per game.
