    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, December 2

The Lakers get set to take on the Pacers on Tuesday, while bettors look ahead to college conference championships. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The gridiron calendar is dark on Tuesday, but college football conference title games get underway later this week. Friday night has the MAC Championship Game at Ford Field, with Ball State opening as a 13-point favorite versus Buffalo.

Saturday then has four more title contests, starting with the Conference USA Championship Game between East Carolina and Tulsa at Chapman Stadium; the Golden Hurricane opened as 13-point favorites. Boston College opened as a 1-point favorite to beat Virginia Tech at Raymond James Stadium in the ACC Championship Game, while surging Florida opened as 10.5-point favorites to beat top-ranked Alabama in the SEC Championship Game at the Georgia Dome.

Finally, Missouri and Oklahoma will meet in the Big 12 Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium; the Sooners are listed as 14-point faves on the opening line.

    Other Notable Events

Kobe Bryant and his Los Angeles Lakers return to action on Tuesday night with a road game against the Indiana Pacers. The Lakers got out to an early lead and cruised past the Toronto Raptors for a 112-99 home win on Sunday night. Bryant picked up 23 points in that matchup, while Pau Gasol had a team-high 24 points.

There are seven other games on the NBA's schedule for Tuesday, including the Raptors in Denver to play the Nuggets in a continuation of their road trip. Rounding out the slate: Washington at New Jersey, Portland at New York, Philadelphia at Chicago, the Clippers at Dallas, Detroit at San Antonio, and Utah at Sacramento. The injury-ravaged Jazz are coming off a 105-88 loss to the Nets.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The NHL offers up six games on Tuesday, including the Dallas Stars on the road up in Calgary. Dallas topped the Edmonton Oilers by a final score of 4-3 on Sunday, thanks to a game-winning goal from Mike Modano late in the third period. Beleaguered goalie Marty Turco made 25 saves for the Stars in the win.

Also on tap in the NHL on Tuesday: Tampa Bay at Philadelphia, Florida at Washington, Atlanta at Montreal, Los Angeles at Phoenix, and Toronto at San Jose. The Sharks beat the Coyotes 3-2 on Saturday for their 20th win of the year.

Finally, notable college basketball games on Tuesday include Ohio State at Miami, Florida A&M at Florida, South Dakota at Notre Dame, Villanova at Pennsylvania, Central Michigan at Marquette, and Marist at Memphis. However, the biggest matchup of the night is probably Duke vs. Purdue at Mackey Arena.

    News from the Wire

First the Cleveland Browns lost Brady Quinn for the season, and now they'll have to make due without Derek Anderson as well; the QB suffered a knee injury on Sunday, pushing third-string pivot Ken Dorsey into action . . . Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony left Sunday's game against the Rockets with a bruised elbow . . . Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward left Sunday's game with a lower-body injury.

    A Peek at the Future

Wednesday's busy NBA lineup includes the Lakers at Philadelphia, New York at Cleveland, Indiana at Boston, and Phoenix at New Orleans . . . the Chargers opened as 10.5-point home favorites to beat the Raiders in NFL action on Thursday night . . . Southern Cal opened as a 30.5-point road favorite to get past UCLA on Saturday afternoon and secure themselves a berth in the Rose Bowl.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Texas Tech QB Harrell had nine fractures in two fingers on his left hand Saturday; he played the second half against Baylor, after doctors had told him he was done for the day. Gutty kid.

-- Likewise, Oklahoma QB Bradford has an injury on his left hand that requires surgery next week. Both Bradford, Harrell are going to play in their bowl games. Bradford will play vs Missouri Saturday.

-- Western Kentucky 68, Louisville 54-- Big upset; Hilltoppers are not supposed to be so good this season.

-- Dabo Swinney is the fifth Clemson head coach who is a graduate of Alabama, kind of a weird fact.

-- 12 Hall of Famers played in the famous Colts-Giants OT playoff game in 1958 that is credited with boosting popularity of the NFL. NFL has colorized a telecast of that game to commemorate the 50th anniversary this season.

-- I'm sold now on fact that Thanksgiving weekend is best sports weekend of the whole year-- good weekend to be in Las Vegas, no?

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday.........

        13) Cardinals-- They're taking grief after losing to Giants, Eagles-- it looks like Redbirds will be battling the NFC North winner for the #3 seed in NFC playoffs, and will finally host a playoff game in desert.

        12) Redskins-- Seem to be fading little bit, but have games left with 49ers, Bengals so they can still finish strong. Tough division, when you figure that 6-5-1 Eagles are in last place.

        11) Panthers-- Huge game with Bucs Monday night; looks like NFC South winner will also get first round bye, which is important thing. I love Jake Delhomme as a QB-- not a numbers guy, but a great leader.

        10) Patriots-- Was wondering if Matt Cassel had ever played in the rain before Sunday; he didn't play in college, and he is from California so there is chance he had never played with a wet football before. He better consider this when choosing a new team this winter.

        9) Buccaneers-- Monte Kiffin earns $1.5M with the Bucs; he would earn $500,000 as defensive coordinator at Tennessee. I'm guessing it is Mrs Kiffin who had to sign off on this job change.

        8) Jets-- At the end of his Monday Morning Quarterback today on SI.com, Peter King basically said that Jaguars-Texans was a lousy game and you shouldn't watch it. Um, Peter, people who read your articles look forward to the games, whether fantasy football, gambling or loving football is the reason. Know your audience.

        7) Cowboys-- Fast forward to 2009; Cowboys at Giants; starting at wide receiver for Dallas, number 17, Plaxico Burress!!!! Now that he has rapsheet, he's eligible to be traded to Jerry Jones' halfway house.

        6) Colts-- Indy has one win this season by more than six points; this is Tony Dungy's best coaching job, to get this team to 8-4. It is odd to note that the last two times the Colts didn't score an offensive TD but won the game, both games were in Cleveland.

        5) Falcons-- Red flag alert- they have no takeaways last three games, they fumbled a punt Sunday, gave up another TD on 86-yard fumble return and they still won on the road. This is a very good team, but they were sloppy against the Chargers Sunday.

        4) Steelers-- Haven't heard Big Ben mentioned as MVP candidate, and why not? They're winning games with Mewelde Moore at RB. As of right now, they're #2 seed in the AFC, and #7 is major reason why.

        3) Ravens-- Four rookie head coaches in the NFL this season; three of the four were not coordinators LY, but all four have winning records this season, with two of them using rookie QBs. Highly unusual.

        2) Titans-- Have two-game lead for top seed in AFC, so their goals for last four weeks of season are to clinch top seed and stay healthy. Decent chance they could play Ravens or Colts in first playoff tilt.

        1) Giants-- How things change in 12 months; this time last year, no living human thought they would win Super Bowl. Right now, there are few people who think they won't win it this year, but distractions are mounting, and the target is squarely on their back. We'll see.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Pistons at San Antonio Spurs [8:30 PM ET]

Pistons: Despite picking up Allen Iverson, Detroit has only managed to split 12 games since he joined the team. Iverson has averaged less than 31 minutes and 13.4 points over the last five games. Those numbers are more than 10 minutes and 14 points below his career averages. The Pistons have won four of six meetings with the Spurs, including both last season.

Pistons are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games.
The UNDER is 14-3 in Detroit's last 17 games vs. Southwest Division.

              Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 88 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Spurs (-4, O/U 184): Tim Duncan has been a bit off lately, averaging 15.5 points and 9.7 rebounds in the last six games while shooting 42.5 percent from the field. Manu Ginobili is averaging 13.0 points but has played less than 22 minutes per game since returning last Monday from ankle surgery. Saturday’s loss to Houston ended the Spurs four-game winning streak and marked the first time in 12 games they have given up 100 points.

Spurs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
The UNDER is 10-3 in San Antonio's last 13 road games.

Key Injuries - C Ian Mahinmi (ankle) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 92

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Best NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Portland Trail Blazers at New York Knicks (+7, 212)

Teams need to start taking the Trail Blazers seriously. Portland kicked off its five game road trip Sunday with a victory over the veteran-heavy Pistons and has won eight of its last 10 contests.

New York, despite an 8-8 record, is one of the worst defensive clubs in the league. The Knicks rank last in opponent field goal percentage (48.6) and second last in opponent scoring (108.8 points per game).

David Lee and Al Harrington each netted over 30 points in the Knicks’ 135-128 victory over the Golden State Warriors Saturday, but Portland’s shot-blocking duo of LaMarcus Aldridge and Greg Oden should make things more difficult for Lee and Harrington.

Knicks reserve Nate Robinson (15.7 PPG) and newcomer Cuttino Mobley (13.7 PPG) are also questionable Tuesday.

                Pick: Portland

Toronto Raptors at Denver Nuggets (N/A)

Raptors forward Chris Bosh thinks he can be the MVP and with the numbers he’s putting up, it’s hard to dispute.

“I came into this season saying I'm going to give it a shot,” Bosh told reporters. “I think I can get it and we need more wins, of course, but when I think of MVPs in the past, I think of consistency and you know, every night they put it out there on the floor and, when need be, they put their teams on their backs.”

Bosh has certainly had the Raptors on his back this campaign. The Dallas native is keeping his team afloat despite injuries to point guard Jose Calderon and center Jermaine O’Neal.

The former Yellow Jacket is averaging 26.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game and his presence only should keep this game close.

                Pick: Toronto

                (Ed. note: TOR-C-O’Neal-Questionable, DEN-F-Anthony-Questionable)

                        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ohio State at #22 Miami (Florida) [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Ohio State: The story in Columbus early on this season has been defense. The Buckeyes are allowing just 40 PPG and are coming off a stifling defensive performance against Samford where they gave up only 22 points. Ohio State will take the road for the first time this season when they travel to battle 4-1 Miami. The Bucks will lean on G Evan Turner, who leads the team in scoring, rebounding and steals.

Ohio State is 8-0 SU in its last 8 games overall.
Ohio State is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 lined games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Miami (-8): The 'Canes come into this game having scored at least 70 points in four of their first five games but they will have a tough test tonight against a stingy Ohio State defense. After losing to UConn, Miami has bounced back to rip San Diego and Stetson. Not surprisingly, all-everything G Jack McClinton paves the way for the 'Canes, averaging 15.8 points and 2.8 assists per game.

Miami is 3-1 ATS in its last 4 lined games.
The UNDER is 9-3 in Miami's last 12 non-conference games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

#4 Duke at #10 Purdue [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Duke: The fourth-ranked Blue Devils come into this matchup having played only one close game all season. While a number of Duke’s wins came on a neutral court, this will be its first true road game of the season. The Devils have been a scoring machine so far this season, reaching 80 points in five of their seven games. Kyle Singler has been the star so far, leading the Dukies in scoring, rebounding and assists.

Duke is 7-0 SU in its last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 10-3 in Duke's last 13 games overall.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Purdue (-2.5): The Boilermakers look to bounce back tonight after a tough, hard-fought loss at the hands of No. 11 Oklahoma. Led by Robbie Hummel and E’Twaun Moore, Purdue has a balanced offensive attack that can cause headaches for its opponents. The Boilers have topped 75 points in four of their first six games so far this season.

Dallas Stars at Calgary Flames (-160, 5.5)

Mike Modano finally gave the Stars’ fans something to cheer about on Saturday night when he became one of only 31 players in the league to collect 1,300 career points. Modano reached this milestone by scoring the game-winning goal against the Edmonton Oilers.

But this may be the only bright spot for a Dallas squad that is plagued with injuries. Modano is suffering from back spasms and could join an injured list that already includes Sergei Zubov, Brenden Morrow, Jere Lehtinen, Steve Ott and Joel Lundqvist.

The struggling Stars will have trouble matching up with the Flames who have been playing well lately winning five of their last six games and sweeping the home-and-home series with the Vancouver Canucks.

                              Pick: Calgary

Toronto Maple Leafs at San Jose Sharks (-270, 5.5)

The Sharks have been unstoppable this season and at 20-3-1 hold the best record in the NHL. They have won their last seven games and have scored a league best 92 goals. To say that this team is on a hot streak would be an understatement.

When asked about his team’s success, Sharks captain Joe Thornton said: “We’re a team. We don’t have three or four guys who are going out and getting a million points on the power play. It’s everybody.”

The Leafs on the other hand have had trouble playing consistently as a unit and this three-game trip on the West Coast will be a test for this team. In order for them to win this game, Vesa Toskala will need to have a stellar performance in the nets against his former team and his teammates will need to elevate their play as well.

                              Pick: San Jose
