    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, December 1

Monday Night Football offers up a potential dud between the Jags and Texans this week, as the teams have eight total wins. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Jacksonville and Houston have identical 4-7 records heading into their AFC South divisional battle on Monday night, effectively putting both teams out of postseason contention this year. The Jags, who are the bigger disappointment, have dropped four of their past five games, including a 30-12 loss at home to Minnesota last week. David Garrard was picked off twice for the Jags that game.

The Texans are actually coming off a win - they knocked off the Browns 16-6 last weekend, thanks to one Sage Rosenfels touchdown strike (he was also picked off twice) and three Kris Brown field goals. Houston, though, lost each of their previous three contests, and they also fell 30-27 to the Jaguars back in Week 4.

Garrard is on Jacksonville's injury report with a sore back this week, but he went through a full practice on Friday and is listed as PROBABLE to get the start on Monday night. Rosenfels is expected to start for the Texans on Monday, but Matt Schaub (knee) is close to returning and could take over QB duties next weekend.

The oddsmakers have the Texans listed as 3-point home favorites for Monday's game, with the total at 48 points. Houston is 5-6 ATS on the season, and 2-3 ATS at home, while Jacksonville is 3-8 ATS overall and 3-2 ATS on the road. As well, the Texans are 9-2 on the OVER/UNDER, while the Jaguars are 5-5-1. Back in Week 4 the Texans covered the listed 7-point spread in an OVER result.

    Other Notable Events

The NBA begins December with just three games on the schedule: Minnesota at Charlotte, Miami at Golden State, and Orlando at Boston. The Atlantic-leading Celtics ran their conference-best record to 16-2 (9-9 ATS) on the season with an 89-84 win over the Bobcats on Saturday, while the Southeast-leading Magic moved to 13-4 (9-7-1 ATS) by thumping the Pacers 110-96 in their last contest.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The NHL has five games on the schedule for Monday, including Nashville at Buffalo, Vancouver at Columbus, Colorado at Minnesota, and Toronto at Los Angeles. As well, the Red Wings will get a visit from the Ducks, with Detroit coming off a 4-1 matinee loss to the Bruins on Saturday to fall to 15-4-4 this year.

Finally, college basketball tournament action subsides this week, but a few teams of note are still playing on Monday. Kansas will take on Kent State, while Wisconsin will do battle with Virginia Tech, and Connecticut will meet Delaware State. Don't expect betting odds to be available for the Huskies/Hornets matchup.

    News from the Wire

Schaub is the only player listed as QUESTIONABLE on the Texans' official injury report for the Monday nighter. Each of DT Travis Johnson, WR Jacoby Jones, DT Amobi Okoye, and RB Steve Slaton are PROBABLE . . . both LB Brian Iwuh and WR Troy Williamson have QUESTIONABLE status on the Jags' injury report, while Garrard, CB Rashean Mathis, and WR Dennis Northcutt sit as PROBABLE.

    A Peek at the Future

The NBA will offer up eight games on Tuesday night, including the Lakers at Indiana, Portland at New York, and Detroit at San Antonio . . . college football has a light schedule leading up to Saturday this week, with Middle Tennessee vs. Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday, Louisville vs. Rutgers on Thursday, and Ball State vs. Buffalo on Friday . . . the Chargers will host the Raiders Thursday night.

Six facts about Michael Vick's finances (from espn.com)

-- Since July 2006, Vick has donated $327,900 to his mom's church.

-- Amount Vick was sentenced to pay for the care of 47 of his pit bulls who are still alive: $928,073

-- Average hourly pay for the pit bulls' caregivers, who are in Utah somewhere: $14 an hour.

-- What Vick makes at Leavenworth these days for working in the kitchen: 12 cents an hour.

-- Sticker price of the '07 Infiniti Vick bought for his fiancé to keep in Leavenworth so she has something to drive while visiting him in prison: $65,000.

The man has suffered enough; time to let him out. Hopefully, now that he has been taken for everything he has, he'll find better friends to hang out with. Ones with their own money and no pets.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday.........

        13) Road teams won 10 of 12 games Sunday, with Bucs/Vikings only home teams to win; visitors are 9-6 vs spread this week, making them a ridiculous 58-22-1 vs pointspread in the last five weeks.

        12) Someone please tell the Raiders they're not playing in the freakin' California Penal League; the aborted fake field goal they tried, which wound up as a Kansas City TD, was right out of The Longest Yard. Same thing happened to Nebraska Saturday; just kick the ball.

        11) Carolina had a 17-yard advantage in average field position, still needed a great throw/catch to Steve Smith to set up the winning TD as Panthers improved to 9-3, beating the Packersw 35-31. Green Bay has now lost four games by four or less points.

        10) Rumor mill has Lane Kiffin bringing his 68-year old dad Monte in from the Buccaneers to run Tennessee's defense; Vols had 6th-rated defense in America this season-- one thing they didn't need was new coordinator on that side of the ball.

        9) Cincinnati went 3/out on 10 of their 14 drives as Baltimore riddled them 34-3-- teams like the Rams, Bengals have no home field edge.

        8) Speaking of my Rams, they're OK when Steven Jackson plays but he doesn't play often enough- they couldn't dent the end zone, losing 16-12 to a Miami team that does little things right. Dolphins should be an inspiration to the Rams-- they were 1-15 last season, and now are a contender-- see what happens with competent leadership?

        7) Cleveland held Manning's offense without a TD and still lost 10-6; not only that, they lost Derek Anderson for season (knee), leaving it to Ken Dorsey to QB the ballclub the rest of the season. Time to say goodbye, Romeo Crennel. Not all his fault, but what a disaster. The backup QB for Cleveland appears to be Richard Bartel, who is on the practice squad- he played at that football factory, Tarleton State.

        6) Falcons whupped the Chargers 22-16; San Diego's two TDs were on an 86-yard fumble return, and on a short drive after fumbled punt. Norv Turner is another guy who needs to update his resume-- their schedule hasn't helped and neither did Merriman's injury, but still, the talent they have isn't that of a 4-8 team.

        5) Steelers either scored a TD or tried a FG on their last seven drives in Foxboro Sunday, pulling away for an easy 33-10 win. Great day for Miami, as Bills-Jets-Patriots all got beat.

        4) Heard Rich Gannon broadcast a full game for first time-- he is very good, better than just about anyone on the NFL airwaves.

        3) How are the Bucs 9-3 with Jeff Garcia at QB? He was 9-23 in the 23-20 win Sunday, and Bucs converted just 2-15 on third down, but they still won, and remain undefeated at home.

        2) I am constantly amazed by the obscure colleges that some guys in NFL went to; take Jared Allen of Minnesota, a totally dominant end; he didn't even play D-I football-- he played at freakin' Idaho State. If I am a coach at one of the Oregon/Washington Pac-10 schools, I'm asking my recruiting coordinator-- Why we didn't recruit this guy?

        1) At the end of the day in any sport, players win games, and that is the absolute truth; check what the NFL playoffs would look like if they started Monday morning:

        AFC: Jets-Ravens-Titans-Broncos-Steelers-Colts
        NFC: Giants-Vikings-Panthers-Cardinals-Buccaneers-Falcons.

Anyone see Tom Brady's team on that list? Me either. "Geniuses" in coaching don't exist-- they're reserved for science and medicine. Guys who coach and get called geniuses have really, really good players

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Best NBA bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Timberwolves at Charlotte Bobcats (-3.5, 184)

The Bobcats (5-11) came close to winning their second in a row in what would have been stunning fashion Saturday, falling 89-84 to Boston. Charlotte shot 47.8 percent against a team that's allowing an NBA-low 40.8 percent shooting on the season and bested the Celtics 36-33 on the boards.

"They're one of the best teams in the league," said forward Gerald Wallace, who led Charlotte with 23 points, including a layup that tied it at 77 with 3:33 left. "We had a chance to win and we put ourselves in a position to win, there are just some little things that we've got to clean up."

One of those things is ballhandling. Point guard Raymond Felton had six assists and seven rebounds, but went 2-of-15 from the floor and committed six of Charlotte's season-high 22 turnovers.

Jason Richardson chipped in 22 points for Charlotte on Saturday in his second game back after missing seven due to arthroscopic knee surgery. Richardson has been dominant in his last three matchups with the Wolves, averaging 31.0 points, 8.3 rebounds and 56.5 percent shooting from 3-point range (13-for-23) in that span.

Rookie guard D.J. Augustin averaged 19.0 points while starting the last four games of Richardson's absence. He returned to a reserve role for the last two contests and scored 15.0 points per game.

Minnesota also received a solid effort from its top rookie Saturday as Kevin Love posted his first career double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds against Denver. That wasn't enough to give the Wolves their first back-to-back wins of the season, as they came up short 106-97.

Minnesota allowed an average of 99.0 points and permitted only three opponents reach 100 points in its first 12 games, but has given up more than 100 in the last three.

The Timberwolves, scoring 102.5 points per game over the last four contests, faces a Charlotte team that's among the league leaders in scoring defense at 92.4 ppg.

                  Pick: Over

Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics (-8.5, 189.5)

The Boston Celtics have enjoyed one of the NBA's best home-court advantages over the past 13 months. The Orlando Magic have spent the same period becoming one of the league's top road teams.

Boston (16-2) went an Eastern Conference-best 35-6 at home last season en route to a league-best 66-16 record. The Celtics then went 13-1 in the playoffs at TD Banknorth Garden on the way to their 17th NBA championship.

While Boston was establishing its home-court dominance last season, Orlando was turning into one of the league's toughest road teams. The Magic (13-4) went 27-14 away from Amway Arena in 2007-08 and have continued that outstanding play this season, winning six straight on the road after dropping their first contest away from Orlando.

After winning at Philadelphia and Washington on Wednesday and Thursday, Orlando returned home Saturday to face Indiana. With starting guards Jameer Nelson and Mickael Pietrus sidelined, Dwight Howard took the pressure off the Magic's makeshift backcourt, scoring 32 points and grabbing 21 rebounds in a 110-96 victory.

"I have the word dominating written all over my house and I talk about it a lot before every game," said Howard, who's averaging 25.8 points, 15.5 rebounds and 3.8 blocks in his last four contests. "I think about dominating the whole game. I've got to have that type of mentality every night for our team to be successful."

Orlando's been without Nelson (strained hip flexor) for three games, and he's expected to miss at least another week. Pietrus is out three to five weeks with a torn thumb ligament, and backup guard Keith Bogans (fractured thumb) is sidelined for at least a month.

That leaves J.J. Redick and veteran Anthony Johnson as the starters, and the 34-year-old Johnson has done a solid job thus far. He's averaging 10.3 points in his three starts and has a 5-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

                  Pick: Magic
