    Trends and Indexes
    Wednesday, November 26

Good Luck on day #331 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Week 14 Trends and Indexes 11/25 through 11/29”
    • “NFL Week 13 Trends and Indexes 11/27 through 12/1”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, and the NHL until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.
Any opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the posting member or BettorsChat.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, November 26

Patrick Marleau and his Sharks will take on the Blackhawks on Wednesday on a hectic evening in both the NHL and the NBA. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Giants just keep winning - and that has them as the 2/1 favorite to win the Super Bowl once again this season on the Vegas futures odds. The Titans, who tasted defeat for the first time on the weekend, are second at 9/2, with the Steelers at 5/1, Brett Favre and his Jets at 6/1, and both the Cowboys and Colts at 8/1. The Patriots and Cardinals then sit at 12/1 odds to claim the championship this season, with the Panthers and Buccaneers just back at 15/1.

    Other Notable Events

The San Jose Sharks will put their 11-0-1 home record on the line on Wednesday night when they play host to the Chicago Blackhawks. The Sharks began their current home stand on Saturday with a 7-2 pounding of the Washington Capitals, as Ryane Clowe scored twice. Brian Boucher was between the pipes for San Jose in that game, but Evgeni Nabokov is now back from injury.

The Blackhawks are coming off a 5-4 comeback win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night, and they'll be trying to improve on their 4-3-1 road record. Also on the NHL schedule on a busy Wednesday: Boston at Buffalo, Phoenix at Columbus, Philadelphia at Carolina, Pittsburgh at the Islanders, Atlanta at Washington, Montreal at Detroit, New Jersey at Florida, the Rangers at Tampa Bay, Dallas at Minnesota, St. Louis at Colorado, and L.A. at Edmonton.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are plenty of NBA games on tap for Wednesday as well, with 13 games on the schedule. The biggest mismatch on the day's calendar should take place in Cleveland, where LeBron James and his Cavaliers will get a visit from the lowly Oklahoma City Thunder. Interim Thunder coach Scott Brooks will guide the team.

Rounding out the NBA's Wednesday slate: Milwaukee at Atlanta, Charlotte at Toronto, Orlando at Philadelphia, Golden State at Boston, New York at Detroit, Phoenix at Minnesota, Indiana at Houston, Chicago at San Antonio, Memphis at Utah, New Jersey at Sacramento, Miami at Portland, and Denver at the Clippers.

Finally, the Maui Invitational and Great Alaska Shootout will continue to provide college basketball action on Wednesday, while the Preseason NIT will stage its two semi-final matchups: Boston College vs. Purdue, and Oklahoma vs. UAB. Those two games will be at Madison Square Garden, with the title game Friday.

    News from the Wire

Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo could miss over a month of action with the groin injury he suffered last week . . the Maple Leafs dealt forward Alexander Steen and defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo to the Blues for forward Lee Stempniak on Monday . . . Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom is still out of action with a sore back . . . Spurs forward Manu Ginobili returned to action on Monday night.

    A Peek at the Future

Thursday's NFL tripleheader has Tennessee at Detroit, Seattle at Dallas, and Arizona at Philadelphia. The Titans are listed as 11-point road favorites against the Lions, while the Cowboys are favored by 13 points at home against the Seahawks, and the Cardinals are 3-point underdogs in Philadelphia . . . there's one college football game on Thursday, with Texas favored by 35 vs. Texas A&M.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Liberty 86, Virginia 82; score a big upset for the Big South.

-- Mercer has already played Alabama, Auburn, Ga Tech, Dayton this season-- their accountants are definitely having a good month.

-- Top four teams in Big East are ranked in top eight in the country.

-- Joe Paterno is out of the hospital, two days after having surgery to get an artificial hip. Got to admire the guy- he's 82 and hurt the hip demonstrating an onside kick to his team.

-- Cheapest ticket for the Bronx Bombers' games next spring is $17; that's spring training in Tampa, not the regular season games.

-- Texas-Notre Dame game in Maui felt more like March than it did November; two really good teams.

Wednesday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13........

        13) Buffalo-- Now 7-4 with several close wins, the Bulls are headed to the MAC title game, and then a bowl game; is Turner Gill headed out of town? Would seem logical that bigger schools will come calling

        12) Georgia Tech-- Had 472 rushing yards against Miami; I wonder what Warren Sapp and Michael Irvin think about that? Paul Johnson is a bigtime coach-- is his offense the wave of the future?

        11) Northwestern-- I know the Big 11 ain't so hot, but 9-3 is 9-3, so tip of the hat to Pat Fitzgerald on an excellent season. Think about their INT for TD that beat Minnesota November 1; it sent both teams going in very different directions very quickly.

        10) Teams that had a touchdown on defense or special teams had a 12-2 record last week (discounting games where both teams had one).

        9) Kansas State-- Three years ago, 66-year old Bill Snyder "retired"; they brought in a young coach, now can the guy three years later, so the 69-year old Snyder can return. Unless Snyder was sick back when he "retired" this move makes zero sense. You hope coach Prince can get another chance to be a head coach; his first job went unfinished.

        8) Washington State-- Flight to Hawai'i will be a little more fun after they held Huskies scoreless in the second half and won Apple Cup. Will be interesting to see how good the kids they are redshirting this season turn out to be- coach Wulff has won at lower level, so you'd think he has a pretty good plan to become competitive again.

        7) Penn State-- Ever heard of a doctor doing an operation on Sunday? How much pull you think Joe Paterno has in central Pennsylvania? He's expected at practice Monday, eight days after his operation.

        6) Michigan State-- Ever heard of a 9-3 team losing games by 45-7 and 49-18 scores? Its probably happened, but not a whole lot.

        5) Boise State- Not only are they unbeaten, they're doing it with a freshman QB-- who will want to play them in a bowl?

        4) Ball State-- Unbeaten with a bigtime QB-- they really deserve to go to a better bowl than freakin' Notre Dame, I'll tell you that much, but money talks........how about Ball St vs the Irish in the Sun Bowl?

        3) Wisconsin-- Snuck past I-AA Cal Poly because Mustangs missed two PATs, one in OT. New rule suggestion-- if you lose to a I-AA team, you're ineligible for a bowl that year-- isn't that a fair rule?

        2) Florida-- Have Florida State, then SEC title game vs Alabama, then they'll play the Big 12 champ (probably) for the national title. Tebow deserves consideration for the Heisman, too.

        1) Oklahoma-- Are scary good right now, but when January comes around, they'll be facing Stoops' bowl game demons. The long layoff won't do anything to help America's hottest team.

Orlando Magic at Philadelphia 76ers [ESPN | 7:30 PM ET]

Magic: Orlando will be without Philly native Jameer Nelson, who will miss 7-10 days with a groin injury. Nelson had averaged 21.7 points and 6.7 assists before leaving in the third quarter of a 108-101 win over Milwaukee on Monday. Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu each scored 22 points to lead the Magic over the Bucks and will need to continue helping out Dwight Howard, who scored a team-high 24 points. Lewis is averaging 20.8 points and 2.8 steals in the last six games.

Underdog is 22-10 ATS in the last 32 meetings.
The UNDER is 13-4 in Orlando's last 17 road games.

Key Injuries - PG Jameer Nelson (groin) is OUT.
G Keith Bogans (thumb) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 92 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

76ers (-2.5, O/U 190.5): Philly seems to be struggling offensively, scoring less than 90 points in three straight games. But despite that scoring slump, the 76ers have won twice during that stretch and five of seven overall as they continue to figure out how to best utilize power forward Elton Brand. “We expected to better than that,” Brand said. “We will be better than that. It’s a work in progress. I’m not worried about it because everyone on this team plays hard. It’s just going to take some time.”

76ers are 1-3 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
The UNDER is 20-7 in Philly's last 27 home games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 94

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Detroit Pistons

The Pistons were embarrassed by the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday and will undoubtedly be look to let off some heat against the Knicks.

Tayshaun Prince was the only Pistons starter to reach double figures on Monday, notching 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field. The other Pistons starters managed just 25 points on 9-for-35 shooting.

“My top three guards were 5-for-27, but they’ve played enough basketball that they know they can’t get frustrated,” Detroit coach Michael Curry told reporters. “Add in Rasheed Wallace, and it is 8-for-37. You aren’t going to win many games like that.”

Detroit should find its scoring touch against the defensively inept Knicks, who are conceding a league-high 106 points per night. New York is also allowing its opponents to shoot a league-high 48 percent from the field.

                Pick: Detroit -11.5

Miami Heat at Portland Trail Blazers

In the last meeting between Miami and Portland it was rookie Rudy Fernandez who led the Blazers to a huge road victory over the Heat. Rookie Greg Oden stole most of the media attention in that one when he made his season debut, scoring three points and blocking two shots in 16 minutes off the bench.

Portland is looking for a repeat performance from Fernandez and another strong defensive outing from Oden, who is averaging nine points, nearly seven rebounds and nearly two blocks a night, to topple the vastly improved Heat.

But it is Portland’s frontcourt trio of rookie Oden, forward LaMarcus Aldridge (15.4 PPG, 6.6 RPG) and reserve Joel Przybilla (6.2 PPG, 8.9 RPG) that has helped the club climb the conference standings. These three seven-footers cause major matchup problems, especially for undersized clubs like the Heat, who start 6-foot-8 forward Udonis Haslem at center.

To make matters worse for Miami, Shawn Marion will be out Wednesday in order to attend a funeral.

                Pick: Portland -7.5

Montreal Canadiens (+168) at Detroit Red Wings (-178)

With an overtime loss Monday, the Detroit Red Wings experienced a slight chill in their current hot streak. Over the past 14 years, they haven't played cold against their next opponent Wednesday - the Montreal Canadiens - at Joe Louis Arena.

Detroit (14-2-4) has taken seven of its last home eight contests with the Montreal Canadiens (11-5-4). Despite splitting the last four meetings, the Red Wings also are 13-4-0 against Montreal since 1994.

The credit for Detroit's current 7-0-2 run goes to an offense that registers 3.65 goals per game. The Red Wings also boast the NHL's top power-play unit with a 32.9 percent conversion rate (28-for-85).

                            Pick: Detroit -178

Chicago Blackhawks (+165) at San Jose Sharks (-175)

When a lower body injury sidelined San Jose's Evgeni Nabokov, Brian Boucher started seven straight games, going 5-1-1 and climbing among the league leaders with a 1.89 GAA.

Nabokov (10-2-0, 2.72) will return for Wednesday's game and start against a team he has beaten nine straight times.

"He's got to get back into the groove, and we're going to give him the opportunity to do that," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said.

With 23 goals during its four-game win streak, the San Jose hasn't needed great goaltending of late.

Setoguchi, who leads the Sharks with 12 goals and is tied with Patrick Marleau with a team-best 24 points, has scored in three straight games. He has five goals and five assists during a five-game point streak, while Marleau and Joe Thornton have also recorded points in five straight.

San Jose's Dan Boyle, who scored twice Nov. 16, has four goals and five assists in his last six games.

                            Pick: San Jose -175
