Daily Sports Roundup

Ball State will be looking for win No. 12 on Tuesday, while the Knicks will be looking to dress 12 players versus the Cavs. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

The Gridiron Spotlight

It's Navy vs. Northern Illinois and Western Michigan vs. Ball State in college football action on Tuesday night. The Huskies (6-5 SU, 6-4 ATS) opened as 4-point favorites in their game against the Midshipmen, and they snapped a two-game losing streak last time out by beating Kent State 42-14. Navy (6-4 SU, 4-5 ATS) fell 27-21 to Notre Dame in their last game, ending a two-game win streak.

However, the bigger matchup sees 11-0 (8-2 ATS) Ball State looking to run the table by taking care of Western Michigan (9-2 SU, 5-5 ATS). The Cardinals won their 11th consecutive contest last week, getting past Central Michigan by a final score of 31-24, and they sit at No. 15 in both the AP Poll and the BCS rankings. The Broncos are on a three-game win streak; they beat Toledo 27-17 last game. The oddsmakers like Ball State in this one, as they opened as 10-point favorites.

Other Notable Events

The Knicks could have each of Al Harrington, Tim Thomas, and Cuttino Mobley in their lineup on Tuesday night when they play host to the Cavaliers. New York shed Zach Randolph and Jamal Crawford in trades last week, and the trio they picked up in return weren't cleared to play for the team over the weekend. The short bench didn't cost them Saturday, though, as they beat the Wizards 122-117.

Four other matchups populate the NBA's schedule for Tuesday, including Golden State at Washington, Phoenix at Oklahoma City, and Indiana at Dallas. As well, the Lakers will look to continue their winning ways at home when the Nets come to town. New Jersey beat the Clippers 112-95 on their own floor Saturday night.

The Rest of the Schedule

There are just three games on the NHL's schedule for Tuesday: Atlanta at Toronto, Los Angeles at Calgary, and St. Louis at Nashville. The Predators beat the Canes 5-2 on Sunday afternoon to improve to 10-9-1 on the season. Defenseman Shea Weber led the way with two goals and an assist in the victory.

Finally, college basketball's Maui Invitational and CBE Classic tournaments continue on Tuesday, with matchups not yet set at press time (check the books for the latest lines). Along with the participants in those events, other notable teams playing Tuesday include Pittsburgh, Villanova, Davidson, and Marquette.

News from the Wire

Giants running back Brandon Jacobs (knee) sat out the team's win over the Cardinals on Sunday despite being listed as PROBABLE on the posted injury report . . . Browns quarterback Brady Quinn was benched in the team's loss to the Texans on Sunday, but will get the start again in Week 13 . . . Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme came out of the week with soreness in his elbow.

A Peek at the Future

The Celtics return to the court on Wednesday, as they'll play host to Golden State. As well, LeBron James and his Cavs will be at home to take on Oklahoma City . . . No. 4 Texas will try to strengthen their BCS outlook on Thursday night when they get a visit from Texas A&M; the Longhorns opened as 34.5-point favorites in the expected mismatch . . . the winless Lions will take on freshly-beaten Tennessee at home on Thursday. The Titans opened as 11-point faves.

Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Wizards fired Eddie Jordan because Gilbert Arenas has bad knee. No you say? Would Washington be 1-10 with Arenas? Hell, no, so it makes sense that Arenas' injury is why Jordan got fired.

-- Is this the first time the three finalists for college football QB of the year all came from the same conference (Big 12)?

-- Florida had won six games in row vs Big East teams before they lost to Syracuse in Kansas City Monday night.

-- Saints have had three punters and three kickers this season.

-- Carson Palmer is going to throw in two weeks, then a decision is going to be made, whether he needs elbow surgery or not. If he does need surgery, it has to jeopardize him for the 2009 season, no?

-- If GM ended it endorsement deal with Eldrick Woods, it doesn't bode well for the rest of the PGA Tour.

13) Vikings-- I'm thinking the big money running backs are a thing of the past-- more and more teams are going to multiple backs, since it takes away the risk of one injury (Stephen Jackson) cripping a team.

12) Redskins-- Must have been an emotional day Sunday for coach Zorn, who was the Seahawks' first star player, along with WR Steve Largent. Zorn has done a fine job making Campbell a steady player.

11) Panthers-- Delhomme was an undrafted free agent in 1997-- none of the 11 QBs drafted that year are still playing, including one Mike Cherry, who lasted four years with the Giants, throwing one pass, and never resurfaced on any other team, not even the Arena League.

10) Cowboys-- How could a guy like Jerry Jones not have signed a decent backup QB? Which reminds me, Michael Vick gets out of jail next June-- which team is going to give him a chance at redemption?

9) Cardinals-- If you put different uniforms on these Redbirds, media types would give them a lot more love; or if their QB dated bimbos instead of being a Christian, you'd be hearing Arizona/Super Bowl in the same sentence a lot. Deep down, Arizona has very few believers.

8) Colts-- How great is Peyton Manning? The guy had two surgeries this summer on his knee, and is single-handedly carrying these Colts to a playoff spot. Mentally tough, they're winning lot of close games.

7) Falcons-- They can line up on 3rd and 1, put in four tight ends and dare you to stop them, and they still get the first down. Tremendous hire by Arthur Blank, getting coach Smith from Jacksonville. 2008 is a hell of a lot better than last year's trainwreck was.

6) Ravens-- Flacco/Ryan are going to accelerate the playing time for future rookie QBs, the way they've produced this season. Odd thing is, they're both playing for rookie head coaches-- coincidence?

5) Patriots-- Best story line of offseason, at least until Vick gets out of jail, will be who hires Josh McDaniels as head coach and does his team sign Matt Cassel to play QB? Cassel is going to be a rich kid.

4) Steelers-- Think about the choice the Giants had when they traded for Eli Manning-- if they hadn't traded, they would have picked Big Ben, who is at least as good as Eli. There were no wrong choices.

3) Jets-- What will they do this winter, when Favre is in Mississippi, blowing off all the team's offseason activities, pretending like he is considering retirement? You know damn well he's playing next year, you also know there's no way in he'll see New Jersey until summer.

2) Titans-- Ask Florida/Oklahoma coaches if a loss helped them- you can teach better after a loss, players are more humble and willing to listen. Now they can concentrate on getting ready for the playoffs.

1) Giants-- At this time last year, did any humans at all think that the Giants would be champs? Um, no. Now, they're anointed to repeat. Not so fast..........in an unrelated topic, a friend brought up Sunday that the popularity of fantasy football makes it more important for teams to come clean on injuries. Can the NFL legislate this? Hmmm

Cavs (-7, O/U 213): New York will need to downplay the much-anticipated return of Cleveland star LeBron James to Madison Square Garden after the fans chanted "MVP" for him the last time he was in town. There is growing speculation that the Knicks will be making a serious bid for James in 2010 when he becomes a free agent, and he is even wearing a special edition of his sneakers to honor the Big Apple, featuring a red color scheme. “It’s always kind of a circus when he comes to town, whether they’re thinking he’s going to play for us in 2010 or not,” said New York F David Lee.

Cleveland Cavaliers at New York Knicks (+7, 213)

It’s no secret that the Knicks want to sign LeBron James in 2010, but on Tuesday night they will be reminded why so many other clubs will be vying to sign King James. In his last visit to MSG, James scored 50 points and led the Cavs to a lopsided 119-105 victory over the Knicks.

James is leading the NBA in scoring averaging more than 29 points per game. He should have no problem surpassing his season average against the Knicks, who rank last in most defensive categories.

The Knicks should struggle to score against the defensive-minded Cavs after trading leading scorers Zach Randolph (20.5 PPG) and Jamal Crawford (19.6 PPG) in a salary-dump move last week.

The Cavs took two of three against the Knicks last year with James averaging 42 points per contest.

Indiana Pacers at Dallas Mavericks (NA)

Dallas has quietly rattled off four-straight wins and is just one victory shy of reaching the .500 mark for the first time since it started the year at 1-1.

The Mavs face a shorthanded Pacers club on Tuesday. Indiana could be without Mike Dunleavy and leading scorer Danny Granger (23.9 PPG). Granger sprained his knee in Saturday’s setback to the Miami Heat.

Indiana is not the same offensive team without Granger and Dunleavy shooting touch from the perimeter. Points could be tough to come by unless shooting guard Marquis Daniels goes off on a shooting tear.

Mavericks forward Josh Howard has been troubled by a sore left ankle, but his workload would be lighten if he doesn’t have to chase Granger around at the defensive end. Expect a big game from the former Demon Deacon.

Notes on the top games on today's card

Mississippi State has pasted four patsies so far, now makes ridiculous road trip from Starkville for Olean for this non-leaguer-- SEC road teams are 1-6 vs spread this season. St Bonaventure is 3-1 after winning in OT at Rutgers Sunday. A-14 underdogs are 9-6 vs spread, 2-1 at home.

Penn State is 4-0 vs variety of cupcakes; they have four starters back from LY, are expected to move up into middle of Big 11 pack. Penn lost at North Carolina by 15 (no HanXXXough). Big 11 favorites are 9-7 vs spread, 3-1 on road, Ivy League dogs are 8-7 vs spread, 2-1 at home.

VCU is picked to win CAA, with three starters back from a 24-8 team. CAA favorites are 3-8 vs spread, 1-6 away from home. Nine of 11 East Carolina players are freshmen/sophs; they lost by 6 to George Mason Saturday, in first game vs decent club. C-USA underdogs are 6-8 vs spread, 2-2 at home.

Saint Louis lost at home at Kent, then beat Boston College; now they're on road at Nebraska squad that has five of its top six scorers back, but they could have been lot better, had they not butchered paperwork and lost out on a top recruit. Big 12 home favorites are 8-6 against spread.

Ark-Little Rock is 3-0 with wins by 27-1-9 points, two of which were on road- they lost 80-61 at Creighton LY (were down 18 at half). Dogs from Sun Belt are 8-9 vs spread, 1-1 at home. Bluejays are 3-0, beating New Mexico, Oral Roberts at home. Favorite is 7-2 vs spread in games involving an MVC team playing on the road.

Texas has four starters back from LY's 31-7 team, but they lost their PG to the NBA, that is big hole to fill. Longhorns easily beat St Joe's in first round. Notre Dame is top 10 team- they crushed undermanned Indiana Monday. Big 12 teams are 6-0 vs spread away from home, Big East teams have covered nine of 13 out of conference.

North Carolina didn't play HanXXXough Monday, coasted past the host Chaminade; they're facing Oregon team that pulled away from Bama in first round, winning 92-69, after falling behind early 8-0. Pac-10 is 2-1 vs spread as non-conference underdog. ACC favorites are 15-11, 4-2 on a neutral court. Not sure if HanXXXough will play in this game.

Its not a consolation game in November; still important score that will count as much on Selection Sunday as any other game this year. Florida played lot of zone last night, lost to Syracuse by 6. Washington lost to Kansas by 19, after losing at home to Portland before that-- not good.

Syracuse won as 3-point dog vs Florida last night; I figured if they left central NY in November, they must be pretty good. Home crowd will be for Kansas here-- Jayhawks routed disappointing Washington last night. Big East underdogs are 6-2 against the spread, Big 12 favorites are 13-6.

Niagara (-6) beat Buffalo 80-63 LY; Eagles lost their only road game by 15 at Villanova but won pair at home. MAAC road teams are 9-6 vs the spread, 4-4 as road dogs. Buffalo is playing first home game after taking two of three on road, losing at Evansville (beat Youngstown, Canisius). MAC home teams are 6-3 against the spread.

Arkansas State lost by 13 at Ole Miss, after leading by 3 at half; they beat pretty good Murray State team 55-47 at home after that. Dogs on road from Sun Belt are 6-8. Tennessee-Martin is picked to win OVC- they got killed at Tennessee, they lost 71-69 at Arkansas State last year. Sun Belt home favorites are 2-3 against the spread.

Utah State (-3.5) lost 78-71 at Weber State LY; Aggies already have win at UCSB this year- they've got three starters back from 24-11 team that lost in WAC semis LY. Weber State is 0-3 after losing in OT at Long Beach Saturday. Big Sky road dogs are 10-7 vs spread. WAC favorites are 3-5 at home this season.

Long Beach has whole team back from LY, when Monson basically built a new team; their first win LY was in OT over Idaho State. 49ers won in OT Saturday, after losing but covering its first two contests. Bengals are 1-2 after losing last two games in OT, at Hawai'i, then in double OT in their last game, at Boise State Saturday night.

Atlanta Thrashers at Toronto Maple Leafs (-125, 6)

If there’s a team more in search of an identity than the Leafs, it would have to be the Thrashers. Sitting near the bottom of the standings in the Eastern Conference with the fewest road wins in the conference, things are looking grim for the Thrashers and new head coach John Anderson.

But Toronto isn’t doing much better. Mats Sundin’s first skate and talks of a possible return to the game have been more captivating than anything the Buds have done so far this season. On Saturday night against the Blackhawks, they couldn’t hold on to a 3-0 lead and ended up falling 5-4 in overtime on the same night the franchise retired Leaf great Wendel Clark’s number.

Things may be looking up for the Leafs with a rumoured deal to sign former Anaheim GM Brian Burke expected to be announced sometime this week.

The Flames have stepped up their defensive game after giving up 32 goals in eight games including 10 short-handed. The club managed two-consecutive wins against the Avalanche before losing to Detroit Saturday night.

Calgary has goalie Miikka Kiprusof to thank for the recent hot streak. He stopped 40-41 shots on net in his two games against Colorado and earned a shutout on Thursday night. Kiprusof can thank his teammates making his job easier by staying out of the penalty box.

Coach Mike Keenan would love to get his offence rolling some that his team wouldn’t have to rely so heavily on Kiprusof. The Flames should be able to muster enough goals against a struggling Kings squad.
