  • Phil Steele/Northcoast

I find it amusing that although Northcoast is having a great NFL season as opposed to dismal college season, Phil once again is really overplaying yesterday.
Today on comp. line he not only told all of us that he went 3-0 but that all games beat the spread by huge margins.
What he didn't mention and stress is that you book doesn't pay you more if you beat the spread by 50 points as opposed to only 1.
He also curiously did not mention that some of his AWFUL picks on Saturday(1-5) like Duke DIDN'T cover spread by huge margins. HMM, and as they used to say on the LaughIn Show years ago, VERY INTERSESTING!!!

He is really an expert at using the statistics to his advantage... 66% winners over 6 years, 65% winners over 2 years, etc.

I get so sick of him saying, "We tell you about the winning days, but we get right on the phone and tell you about the losing days, too"! Hopefully, he will have a college winning day to tell us about. The problem now is that everyone has lost confidence in him so even if he has a winning day, most of us have either quit following him or have pared back so far that we wouldn't come close to winning the money back that we have lost on his picks!

I can't believe people are still paying his inflated prices.

Wonder if he will have a pay-after-you-win Saturday again this week. I doubt it!

At least he never says he went 3-1 when he actually went 1-3.

He does use earlier than closing odds as the standard by which he judges - earlier odds he himself could get. Since his picks often move the lines, this could leave some bettors losing when his picks won acording to him.

Outside of such rare discrepancies the man is honest, and he does let you know when his picks tied or lost, with a late line change, though a winner at the odds he used in making the pick.

I'm still loading up on his next 5 star college pick (GOM or GOY), as well as his next 4 Star NFL play.

Anybody knows what a marquee pick is? I'm confused and thought his marquee picks were his $9 calls. It seems like he's always bragging on how well his marquee picks are doing. The free $9 calls were 0-7 on button # 9 and 1-3 on button #3. That's a money draining 1-10 ATS. This is not the first tme this has happened this year. I recall early in the season when he was also 0-7 on button #9 (can't remember what he did on button #3 but I do know it was no better thatn 2-2).

His marquee picks are his best $9 pick for Thurs, Fri, Sun night and then his Monday night Totals play.

                In Phil's defense

I love cigar games. What someone like me takes from what he said is that while his college picks are sucking eggs, his NFL is absolutely on FIRE!!! It's nice when you can put the "W" down at the half.

Now, of course he'll never say that his college selections are terrible, but he's separating the two so people that bet NFL can jump on his PRO bandwagon and win big.

His Sunday Late Phones this year are now 15-5-1.....HARD TO BEAT THAT. And since his push was on the SF/STL game in week 2 with a line of STL-3, that's 16-5 for you, since you most likely bought the half. Even if you couldn't for some reason, that's money.

Now if only his college picks would only go above .500....

it might be sematics but he is emphasizing that his NFL is winning by huge margins not out of the goodness of his heart so that you think you can relax but so that folks will forget his college plays and sign up and PAY him for his NFL;nevere forget, no matter how much Phil tries to be a gentleman, be honest, etc., he is at first a businessman and will do whatever and say whatever it takes(no-he doesn't lie like Price, Feiner, Fixer, Gasto, etc. and I respect him for that) to get you to sign up.

Look, I know his college picks suck. But even when they were good (1999-2001), he would ALWAYS emphasize his easy wins.

"...a game that was over by halftime and covered by TWENTY THREE POINTS!!!!"

How many times did we hear that over the years on his comp tapes?

So one thing doesn't have anything to do with the other. Case closed.

You are correct-bottom line is that he wants to make money and that is ok. As any sharp businessman would, he capitalizes on his own business acumen to sell his service as well as pointing out the flaws of the other services.
My point is that he is honest, yes, and that is great, and I do believe it or not have respect for him and have called many many times for picks before they became available for nothing.
A lot of what I say should be taken in jest and in a good natured way.

That's a good way of putting it. Hopefully he can win a damn college game of the week, eventually.
