    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, November 24

Ryan Grant will be looking to carry his Green Bay Packers past the New Orleans Saints when the teams meet on Monday night. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Packers put an end to a two-game winning streak last weekend by cruising to an easy 37-3 win over the division-rival Chicago Bears. Grant was the offensive star for Green Bay in that contest, with 145 yards on the ground and a touchdown. The Packers easily covered the 3.5-point spread in that UNDER matchup, which put them at 6-3-1 against-the-spread (5-5 SU) so far this season.

New Orleans is finally back at the Superdome this weekend after an extended road trip that included a stop in England, and they'll be looking to build on last week's 30-20 win against the Chiefs. That UNDER result put the Saints at 5-5 SU and 6-4 ATS. Inconsistent New Orleans has yet to win two in a row this season.

Vegas oddsmakers have the Saints pegged as 2.5-point favorites at home on Monday night, with the total listed at 51.5 points. Reggie Bush (knee) is unlikely to play for the Saints, while Marques Colston (knee) is probable to take the field.

    Other Notable Events

The Houston Rockets will continue their Florida swing on Monday night with a game in Miami against the Heat. Houston knocked off Orlando 100-95 last time out, with Yao Ming (22 points), Tracy McGrady (17), and Ron Artest (11) all in the lineup. The Heat got past Indiana 109-100 last game, with 38 points from Dwyane Wade. Miami is 7-6 SU and 6-6-1 ATS, Houston is 9-5 SU and 7-7 ATS.

There are six other NBA games on the Monday schedule, including Milwaukee at Orlando, Philadelphia at Charlotte, San Antonio at Memphis, Sacramento at Portland, and New Orleans at the Clippers. Also, Utah will play host to Chicago.

    The Rest of the Schedule

Seven games hit the ice around the NHL on Monday, including Detroit at Vancouver. The Canucks lost star goaltender Roberto Luongo to a suspected groin injury on Saturday, so they'll have to make due with the tandem of Curtis Sanford and Cory Schneider. Rounding out the slate: Phoenix at the Rangers, Dallas at Philadelphia, the Islanders at Montreal, Carolina at Florida, and Washington at Minnesota, while Colorado is at Anaheim to finish up the evening.

Finally, college basketball's early-season tournaments continue on Monday, with the Paradise Jam, Maui Invitational, and CBE Classic staging games. Check the tournament brackets and odds pages for the latest matchups, lines, and totals.

    News from the Wire

Stars forward Brenden Morrow suffered a torn ACL, and he's expected to miss the rest of the season . . . the Knicks should have new acquisitions Al Harrington, Tim Thomas, and Cuttino Mobley in their lineup on Tuesday, assuming they all pass their physicals . . . Rockets guard Tracy McGrady has been playing through his injuries so far this season, but hasn't ruled out taking some time off to rest.

    A Peek at the Future

There are a pair of games on the college football schedule on Tuesday, with Navy at Northern Illinois, and Western Michigan at No. 14 Ball State; the Cardinals ran their record to 11-0 last week . . . the new-look Knicks will get a visit from LeBron's Cavs on Tuesday night, while the Nets will play out in Los Angeles versus the Lakers . . . the Preseason NIT semi-finals are on Wednesday.

      Six-pack for Monday

-- Its a really good week to be Matt Cassel. Or his agent.

-- Not such a good week to be Donovan McNabb.

-- Red Sox traded Coco Crisp, are said to be very interested in bringing in Rocco Baldelli as his replacement. Good luck there.

-- Xavier upset Memphis in the Virgin Islands Sunday as terrible foul shooting once again crippled the Tigers. Good win for Xavier.

-- 6-5 Notre Dame is headed to LA to play USC and get loss #6. Rumor has the Sun Bowl interested in the Irish, no matter what.

-- Kansas State is bringing 69-year old Bill Snyder out of retirement to coach the Wildcats again. Snyder left K-State three years ago; he had transformed the Wildcats from a doormat into a contender. Ron Prince went 15-17 and now Snyder is back. How this makes any sense is a mystery to me.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday.......

        13) Detroit led the Bucs 17-0, seemed headed to their first win, but then reality set in-- they were losing by halftime, and got drilled by the Bucs 38-20. 0-16 seems like a very real possibility.

        12) How in the name of Lou Saban did the Bills score 54 points? It would be fun to know the average score of the games where teams have a -5 turnover ratio, like Kansas City did Sunday.

        11) Brady Quinn and his broken finger got benched, Derek Anderson was worse than Quinn, and the Browns lost to a Houston team that hadn't won a road game this season until Sunday.

        10) Jets had 193 rushing yards, 217 passing and handed Tennessee its first loss of season, 34-13. Blessing in disguise for Titans, who won't get hounded by the bandwagon media like the Patriots were last year.

        9) Apparently the Patriots studied the Wildcat Offense; Miami had 62 rushing yards on 19 carries, and got crushed 48-28 by Patriots. Matt Cassel is going to be very rich this spring.

        8) Can't wait for FOX to smother us with Cowboys news when the Pokes host Seattle Thursday; Terrell Owens had over 200 receiving yards against the 49ers Sunday. I guess Mike Singletary isn't such a hot coach unless his team is playing the hideous Rams.

        7) Interesting move by Andy Reid, benching McNabb at halftime of a game Eagles trailed 10-7. It didn't turn out well, with Philly hosting the Cardinals Thanksgiving Night, who do the Eagles start at QB?

        6) Anytime the Jaguars throw 45 passes and run ball 14 times, you can safely assume they lost. Vikings returned a fumble for TD on the first play of game, then recovered fumble on ensuing kickoff and led 14-0 before the game was 5:00 old.

        5) The punt return Harry Douglas ran back for a Falcon TD was the fastest in terms of actual elapsed time I've ever seen. Douglas had a tremendous game Sunday, earning Atlanta a split with the Panthers.

        4) JaMarcus Russell's first incomplete pass came with 1:05 to go in the third freakin' quarter, as the Raiders looked really good in a 31-10 pasting of the Broncos. Denver didn't look like a playoff team.

        3) Washington outgained the Seahawks 386-228, handing Seattle its ninth loss in 11 games. Tough way for Mike Holmgren to go out.

        2) Its funny, no one is mentioning Peyton Manning for MVP, but who means more to their team right now than Manning does?

        1) Giants won in Arizona without Burress or Jacobs playing- right now, they're clearly the best team in the league.

Texas has four starters back from LY's 31-7 team, but they lost their PG to the NBA, so that is big hole to fill. San Diego lost by 15 to Wisconsin yesterday, after beating Valparaiso by 7 in first round; Toreros also lost 65-60 at UNLV earlier this month. Syracuse left New York in November? Wow, they must be pretty good. Orange feasted on their usual assortment of cupcakes so far this month, while Florida beat Bradley by 23, Toledo by 22, Southern Utah by 14. SEC teams are 1-5 vs spread away from home (this is in Kansas City).

Washington got upset at home by Portland, then beat Cleveland State by 15, FIU by 18; we'll see how they do stepping up in class vs a Kansas squad that will have major crowd support. Young Jayhawks were tied at half with UMKC in opener, won by 15. Big 12 favorites are 11-6.

Detroit Red Wings (-140) at Vancouver Canucks (+130)

The Canucks are back home after a frantic East-Coast road swing. They managed to go an impressive 3-0-0-1 during that span but lost star goaltender Roberto Luongo to injury versus Pittsburgh Saturday night.

Luongo had an MRI Sunday to get a better look at the damage. The Canucks are calling it a groin injury and aren't sure of his status heading into Monday's tilt with Detroit.

If Luongo is out, Vancouver fans can breath a bit easier after watching backup goaltender Chris Sanford carried the team to back-to-back wins last week. He's allowed three goals on 48 shots during the last two starts.

However, they face the smoking-hot Red Wings, who have won five in a row including victories over Edmonton and Calgary during their Western-Canada road trip. There is a ton of value with the home team, if you've got the guts to pick them.

                        Pick: Red Wings -140

Colorado Avalanche (+155) at Anaheim Ducks (-165)

The Ducks are enjoying life on the road, going 6-2-1-1 away from home. Too bad they're back in the Honda Center versus the Avs Monday night.

Anaheim won in a shootout against Los Angeles Saturday night giving it just its second win in the last seven games. Four of those losses came at home where it is 5-6-1-1 this season.

The Ducks have allowed an NHL-worst 42 goals at home compared to just 25 goals against on the road. Colorado has been victorious in three of its last four road games including a 4-3 come-from-behind shootout win over Los Angeles Saturday.

                        Pick: Avalanche +155

Houston Rockets at Miami Heat (+3, 187)

Coming off his two best offensive performances of the season, Dwyane Wade will face a stiffer challenge Monday when his Miami Heat host the Rockets, the Western Conference's stingiest defensive team.

Miami (7-6) has been inconsistent during the early going, as it's yet to win three in a row and hasn't lost consecutive games. The one constant for the Heat has been Wade, who's averaging 28.9 points - second in the NBA behind Cleveland's LeBron James - and has turned in his best two efforts of the season in the last two games.

Wade had a season-high 40 points and 11 assists Wednesday in a 101-95 loss to Toronto. Then, despite experiencing flu-like symptoms Saturday morning, he helped Miami bounce back that night with 38 points as the Heat rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit for a 109-100 win over Indiana.

His best three-game total is 117 points from March 8-12, 2006, but the Rockets (9-5) would figure to make it difficult for Wade to break that mark. Houston allows 90.0 points per game - right behind league-best Boston at 89.9 - and has given up 87.4 ppg while going 5-2 in its last seven contests.

The Rockets kicked off a three-game road trip Friday with a 103-91 victory over Washington, overcoming a seven-point deficit after three quarters by outscoring the Wizards 33-14 in the final period. A night later in Orlando, the Magic scored 53 points in the first half, but Houston clamped down after halftime and Yao Ming finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds in a 100-95 win.

While Houston will have its hands full with Wade, who averaged 32.0 points against the Rockets last season, the Heat will have quite a challenge in dealing with Yao. He's averaging 24.8 points on 61.9 percent shooting in his last four games against Miami.

The Rockets hope Tracy McGrady is starting to pick it up offensively. McGrady failed to score in double figures in four of six games earlier this month - something that happened only six times last season - but he's averaging 17.7 points in his last three contests.

                          Pick: Under

New Orleans Hornets at Los Angeles Clippers (+6, 187)

The Clippers hope Zach Randolph can provide a spark in his debut on Monday night in Los Angeles, something Chris Paul has been doing all season for the Hornets.

Off to a slow start and already in last place in the Pacific Division, the Clippers (2-11) acquired Randolph and Mardy Collins on Friday from the New York Knicks in exchange for Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas. The pair were inactive Saturday in Los Angeles' 112-95 loss to New Jersey, but the arrival of Randolph - third in the NBA at 12.5 rebounds per game - should give the Clippers a much-needed boost on the boards, where they have been outrebounded by 5.2 per game.

Baron Davis will try to follow up his 30-point, 10-assist game against New Jersey with another big outing against the Hornets. Davis is averaging 24.5 points and 8.5 assists in his last six games versus New Orleans.

The Hornets (7-5) begin a three-game road trip buoyed by another stellar effort from Paul, who posted his first triple-double of the season and fifth of his career with 29 points, 16 assists and 10 rebounds as New Orleans completed a home-and-home sweep of the Oklahoma City Thunder with 109-97 win on Saturday.

"It was his best game of the year," Hornets coach Byron Scott said of Paul, who leads the NBA in assists (11.8) and steals (3.1).

New Orleans, which is shooting 46.5 percent from the field - fifth in the NBA - made a season-best 54.1 percent on Saturday and has hit 51.7 percent of its shots the past three games. That accuracy could continue against the Clippers, who have allowed three opponents to shoot better than 50 percent during their current 1-5 stretch.

                          Pick: New Orleans
