    Trends and Indexes
    Friday, November 21

Good Luck on day #326 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Week 13 Trends and Indexes 11/18 through 11/23”
    • “NFL Week 12 Trends and Indexes 11/20 through 11/24”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, the NHL, and the Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, November 21

It's Greg Oden and college football on Friday night as the sports world gears up for a very busy weekend on all fronts. Here's a look at the slate in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

There are three games on the college football schedule for Friday, including Fresno State at San Jose State. The Spartans have fallen on hard times lately, picking up losses in three of their past four games (including a 41-17 drubbing versus Nevada last time out). The Bulldogs are coming off a 24-17 win over New Mexico State that put them at 6-5 (5-5 ATS) on the season; the Spartans are at 6-4 straight-up, but they're 1-9 against the line. The oddsmakers have Fresno State pegged as the 3.5-point favorite.
Elsewhere on the gridiron it'll be Buffalo (6-4 SU, 7-3 ATS) vs. Bowling Green (5-5 SU, 7-3 ATS), and Miami-Ohio (2-8 SU, 4-5 ATS) vs. Toledo (2-8 SU, 5-5 ATS). The Falcons are listed as 3.5-point favorites in their game against the Bulls on Friday night, while the oddsmakers have the Rockets pegged as 3-point faves versus the RedHawks.

    Other Notable Events

Greg Oden and his Portland Trail Blazers return to the NBA hardwood on Friday night for a road game against the Sacramento Kings. Oden scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Portland's 116-74 blowout of the Chicago Bulls at home on Wednesday night, which moved them to 7-5 both SU and ATS through a dozen games this season.

There are 12 more games around the NBA on Friday, including Boston playing on the road in Minnesota and the Lakers getting a visit from Denver. Also on tap: New Jersey at Toronto, Houston at Washington, the Clippers at Philadelphia, Orlando at Indiana, Charlotte at Atlanta, New York at Milwaukee, Utah at San Antonio, Memphis at Dallas, New Orleans at Oklahoma City, and shell-shocked Chicago on the road in Golden State.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The Boston Bruins will get a visit from the Florida Panthers in NHL action on Friday night. The Bruins improved to 12-3-4 on the season with a 7-4 comeback win over the division-rival Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night. Rounding out the games on ice: Phoenix at Carolina, the Islanders at New Jersey, Nashville at Tampa Bay, and Anaheim at St. Louis, with the Sabres looking to bounce back at home versus the Flyers.

Finally, the early-season tournaments continue in college basketball on Friday, with the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, the Paradise Jam, and the Coaches vs. Cancer events all staging contests. Check the tourney sites and the sportsbooks for the latest matchups and lines.

    News from the Wire

The Rockets were supposed to have Yao Ming in their lineup on Wednesday night, with Tracy McGrady sitting out the contest. Instead, Ming missed the game with a sore foot, McGrady played through his knee injury, and the Rockets lost 96-86 to the Mavericks . . . Jazz forward Carlos Boozer strained his quad against the Bucks on Wednesday night . . . Giants running back Brandon Jacobs (knee) is still a question mark for the weekend.

    A Peek at the Future

There are four matchups between ranked teams on the college football schedule for Saturday, with No. 17 Michigan State at No. 7 Penn State (-14.5), No. 16 BYU at No. 8 Utah (-7.5), No. 20 Pittsburgh at No. 19 Cincinnati (-5), and No. 2 Texas Tech at No. 5 Oklahoma (-7) . . . the NBA's top matchup on Saturday has Oden and the Blazers in Phoenix, while Houston will be on the road in Orlando, and Atlanta will visit Cleveland.

Friday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13........

        13) Michigan-- How happy will Rich Rodriguez be when Saturday is over, 2008 is behind him and he can go out recruiting? Wolverines are in nothing-to-lose position in Columbus Saturday.

        12) Syracuse-- Where do they turn for a new coach, new players? If you draw a circle around Syracuse, and go 200 miles in any direction, there aren't a whole lot of D-I players, other than in Pennsylvania, and Penn State/Pitt/West Virginia/Virginia Tech have that covered.

        11) New Mexico-- Were first D-I team to finish its season, then their coach unexpectedly quit. Just when it looks like they finally have the basketball program straightened out, the football program is a mess.

        10) Baylor-- Gained 510 yards in 41-21 rout of Texas A&M; Briles was a high school coach in Texas, did terrific job at Houston, now it appears he is doing same thing in Waco, but is in nasty division, with Texas-Oklahoma-Oklahoma State-Texas Tech and the Aggies. .

        9) Oregon State-- Always play better in second half of season. ABC is praying they lose one of last two games, otherwise Rose Bowl will be boring rematch of horrible September game, when Beavers quit in second half and just got killed in Happy Valley.

        8) Arizona-- Have good senior QB (Tuitama), scored 104 points in last two games, but they lost 55-45 at Oregon last week. At least it appears Stoops has saved job by getting Wildcats bowl eligible, at a time when school will be hiring new hoop coach next spring.

        7) Washington-- Should open their wallets and hire Mike Leach; last week, in horrendous home loss to UCLA, they were 7-24/39 passing the ball, just painful to watch. There is lot of young talent here.

        6) Houston-- Gave up 501 yards to 8-2 Tulsa last week, still beat the Hurricane by 40; won five of last six games. Lot of wild games out in C-USA this season. Tulsa scored 77 in one, gave up 70 in another. '

        5) Rutgers- Shocking 49-16 win at South Florida last week, now the Knights have shot to return to bowl, albeit a minor one, and might be re-fueling Schiano-to-Penn State rumors.

        4) Troy-- Hope someone took picture of scoreboard when they led 31-3 at LSU with 2:00 left in third quarter, as disaster later struck, with LSU scoring last 37 points of game in a wild 40-31 win.

        3) Vanderbilt-- Only private school in SEC, no traditional athletic department, a coach who is dead ringer for Steve Martin, but now at least, Commodores are bowl eligible for first time since '82; congrats

        2) Alabama-Florida-- As long as they survive rivalry games against Auburn/Florida State next week, winner of SEC title game will play for national title January 8. Hard to see the Gators losing again.

        1) Texas Tech-Oklahoma-- Mike Leach has never beaten his friend Stoops in Norman; this is his best chance. Survivor of Big 12 South will be prohibitive favorite in Big 12 title game, could be team that is going to face SEC champ for the national title.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                        Ice Picks: NHL Bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Flyers (+140) at Buffalo Sabres (-150)

The Flyers may be the best team in the NHL with just seven wins. They've been on the wrong end of plenty of one-goal games but have turned that luck around in their last two contests. Philadelphia picked up its second straight win 4-3 over Atlanta Sunday.

The Flyers' work on special teams is keeping them in those close games. Their powerplay ranks fifth overall and they've scored a league-high eight shorthanded goals this season.

The grimy twosome of Simon Gagne and Mike Richards lead the charge on the penalty kill. Gagne has four of those shorthanded scores while Richards is one of the best defensive forwards in the league.

For the most part, Philly has stayed out of the box. It averages just under 18 penalty minutes per game while inducing the man-advantage 38 times this season.

                        Pick: Flyers +140

Nashville Predators (+115) at Tampa Bay Lightning (-125)

Interim head coach Rick Tocchet wasted little time shaking things up in Tampa Bay. Since taking the reigns following the firing of Barry Melrose last week, Tocchet juggled the lineups and sparked the Lightning's dormant offense.

Tampa Bay nearly snapped its losing skid in its last two games. It dropped both contests in a shootout, most recently a 4-3 loss to Florida Tuesday. The Lightning peppered their opponents with 52 shots in that game and scored three goals for just the third time in their last eight games.

Nashville is giving up over three goals per game, including a 4-1 loss to San Jose Monday. The Predators are struggling on the road with a 4-6-0-1 record away from Nashville Arena. They've allowed home teams to score 40 goals on them this season which is the second most in the NHL.

                        Pick: Lightning -125

                          Friday, November 21

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Friday's best NBA bets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Orlando Magic at Indiana Pacers (+2, 205)

Orlando's starters average a league-best 83.7 points, a pace that would make them the NBA's third-highest scoring starting unit since 1991-92. All five Magic starters average at least 13.7 points, and each has scored 20 points at least twice this season.

The starting group had been the same for the team's first 10 games prior to Tuesday against Toronto, when Pietrus was held out because of bruised ribs suffered in a 90-85 win at Charlotte two days earlier. Pietrus, who signed with Orlando (8-3) over the summer after spending his first five seasons with Golden State, has been the team's most pleasant surprise.

Pietrus is expected to play against the Pacers (5-5), but the Magic could use more from All-Star center Dwight Howard. After averaging 23.9 points and 15.0 rebounds in his first eight games, Howard has scored just 13.3 points and grabbed 9.7 boards in his last three.

Howard will have his work cut out for him against an Indiana team that surrenders just 33.8 points in the paint - fifth-best in the league. After dropping back-to-back games against Philadelphia and Chicago last Friday and Saturday, the Pacers got back in the win column on Tuesday by dominating the paint.

Danny Granger is the Pacers' leading scorer, and he's also been one of the league's best players through the first three weeks. Granger is averaging 24.3 points - among the top 10 scorers in the NBA - and he had a season-high 34 against Atlanta.

                          Pick: Over

Portland Trail Blazers at Sacramento Kings (+4.5, 202)

Coming off their most lopsided win in 11 years, the Trail Blazers will kick off a brief two-game road trip on Friday against the Sacramento Kings, who are coming off their most impressive victory of the season.

After having a limited impact in his first game back, Greg Oden has started to show signs of being a dominant presence in the paint for the Trail Blazers (7-5). He's had three double-doubles in his last four games, during which he's averaged 14.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 3.0 blocks.

His latest double-double came Wednesday against Chicago, but Oden (11 points, 10 rebounds) was hardly the only Blazer to have a positive impact. Portland built a 16-point lead midway through the first quarter when Oden came into the game and didn't slow down, routing the Bulls 116-74 for its largest margin of victory since beating Dallas 120-75 on Nov. 17, 1997.

The Blazers are easing Oden back into action by bringing him off the bench, plus Joel Przybilla is doing an outstanding job as a starter. He went 6-for-6 and scored a season-high 14 points against Chicago, also grabbing nine rebounds and blocking three shots.

The Kings (5-8) had dropped three in a row heading to New Orleans on Wednesday - including a 109-94 loss at Memphis the night before - and looked like they might be on the verge of their second four-game skid of the season. But Sacramento rallied to beat the Hornets 105-96 behind 29 points from John Salmons.

Salmons has stepped up in the absence of leading scorer Kevin Martin (22.4 points per game), averaging 18.8 points while shooting 50.8 percent from the field. Salmons has scored 26.0 points in his last three contests.

He may have to shoulder the load for a few more games as it appears Martin, who initially targeted Friday to return from his sprained right ankle, won't be back until next week.

                          Pick: Trail Blazers
