    Trends and Indexes
    Thursday, November 20

Good Luck on day #325 of 2008!

For College Football and the NFL, look for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Week 13 Trends and Indexes 11/18 through 11/23”
    • “NFL Week 12 Trends and Indexes 11/20 through 11/24”

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, the NHL, and the Canadian Football League until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, November 20

The Steelers will be looking to win - and secure the payday - on Thursday night when they play host to the division-rival Bengals. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Pittsburgh picked up an 11-10 victory in their Week 11 matchup against the Chargers, although a referee's error on a Steelers scoring play at the end of the game prevented them from covering the posted spread. That puts Pittsburgh at 7-3 straight-up but just 4-6 against-the spread through 10 games. Ben Roethlisberger went 31-of-41 for 308 yards passing with no touchdowns, while Willie Parker ran for 115 yards on 25 carries.

Not be outdone the Bengals also turned in a strange result last week, as they ended up in a 13-13 tie with the Eagles. Ryan Fitzpatrick completed 29-of-44 pass attempts for 261 yards in the game for Cincinnati, with one touchdown strike, while Cedric Benson ran for just 42 yards on 23 carries. T.J. Houshmandzadeh had 12 catches for 149 yards and a score. The Bengals are now at an ugly 1-8-1 SU on the year, and they're 4-6 ATS.

Pittsburgh and Cincinnati met back on October 19, with the Steelers rolling to a 38-10 win as a 9-point road favorite. The combined score of that contest went OVER the posted total of 36.5 points; Pittsburgh is 5-5 on the OVER/UNDER this season, while Cincinnati is 3-6-1. Last season the Steelers were 2-0 SU and ATS against the Bengals.

    Other Notable Events

There are only two games on the NBA schedule for Thursday night, but they're both marquee matchups - Detroit at Boston, and the Lakers at Phoenix. The Suns had their modest two-game winning streak snapped on Monday night as they fell 109-97 on the road versus the Jazz. Amare Stoudemire scored 30 points in that loss, and Steve Nash picked up 14 points and eight assists. The Suns are now 8-4 SU and 6-6 ATS this year.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are eight games on the ice on Thursday, including Patrick Kane and the Chicago Blackhawks playing on the road in Dallas. Rounding out the NHL's slate for Thursday: Florida at New Jersey, Pittsburgh at Atlanta, Montreal at Ottawa, Vancouver at Minnesota, Detroit at Edmonton, Calgary at Colorado, and Washington at Los Angeles.

Thursday's college football action sees No. 23 Miami taking on Georgia Tech. The Hurricanes have won five straight games, slipping past Virginia Tech 16-14 in their last outing; that put Miami at 7-3 SU and 5-4 ATS on the season. The Yellow Jackets fell 28-7 to North Carolina in their last game, and they're now at 7-3 SU and 6-2 ATS. The oddsmakers have Georgia Tech listed as a 3.5-point home favorite, with a total of 40.5.

Finally, the top college basketball action on Thursday will take place at Madison Square Garden, where they'll stage the semi-final round of the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament. The 7:00pm ET contest sees Duke taking on Southern Illinois, while UCLA and Michigan will meet up in the 9:00pm ET game. The championship is set for Friday night.

    News from the Wire

The Bills are going to stick with Trent Edwards as their starting QB this week despite his poor play of late . . . Rangers forward Scott Gomez is expected to be out a few more days with his ankle injury, while Avalanche forward Joe Sakic is day-to-day with a sore back . . . Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was named the American League MVP this week; Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols was voted as his NL counterpart.

    A Peek at the Future

There are three college football games on the schedule for Friday, with Miami-Ohio at Toledo (-3), Buffalo at Bowling Green (-3.5), and Fresno State (-2.5) at San Jose State . . . the NBA has 13 games on the schedule for Friday, including Utah at San Antonio and Denver at the Lakers . . . the Cowboys and the Broncos are the big NFL favorites for Sunday; the openers were San Francisco at Dallas (-11) and Oakland at Denver (-10).

Thursday's List of 13: College hoop knowledge, from SI.com

The fine folks at Sports Illustrated put out a survey to all 341 hoop programs in Division I basketball; they got responses from 301 of the 341 schools-- here is some information we learned from their survey

        13) Over 200 schools are starting three guards this season, as college game has gotten away from big guys-- just about all the skilled big guys jump to the NBA early, so college ball is guard-dominated......

        12) Only 10% of teams admit to zones being their primary defense. Its almost unmanly to admit to not being a man-man defense team-- thats too bad. Switching defenses is an effective tool, I think.

        11) Davidson has players from Canada, England, Nigeria and Turkey, in addition to the terrific Stephon Curry.

        10) Lot of foreigners in college ball., but they gravitate.towards the coastal areas; landlocked Missouri Valley Conference has total of just eight foriegners on their ten teams this season.

        9) Georgia State of the CAA welcomed six transfers this year, from the ACC-Big East-SEC. Coach Rod Barnes used to be coach at Ole Miss-- he has the Panthers on the right track.

        8) Florida State and Miami are only ACC teams with junior college players on their roster, and they only have one each.

        7) Junior college kids are all over the western conferences-- Big Sky teams average 6.2 junior college players per team.

        6) Of the teams surveyed, 72.1% wear Nikes, 26.2% wear Adidas.

        5) Marquette is only school in country they surveyed that are still wearing Converse shoes, since Dwayne Wade has a deal with them.

Here is a breakdown of how all 341 D-I coaches got their jobs.......
        4) 142 (41.6%) were head coaches at another D-I school, before they took their current job.

        3) 128 (37.5%) were assistant coaches for a different D-I team.

        2) Only 58 (17%) were an assistant at the place where they got hired.

        1) The other 13 were out of college basketball when they got hired.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Best NBA bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Pistons at Boston Celtics (-7, 190)

It was just 11 days ago that Detroit was embarrassed at home by the defending champion Boston Celtics but don’t expect another letdown from the Bad Boys.

The Pistons have won three of their last four road games, including Friday’s win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Detroit is now 5-2 straight up against the spread on the road.

The win over L.A. also marked the return of sixth man Rodney Stuckey, who missed the Pistons previous three games with an allergic reaction to allergy medication. Stuckey is averaging nine points and three assists in 20 minutes a night and is an excellent change of pace at point guard.

Stuckey did not play in last Sunday’s loss to the Celtics but averaged more than nine points and one steal per night against the C’s in the Eastern Conference Finals last season.

              Pick: Pistons -2.5

Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns (+4, 206.5)

The Suns will have center Shaquille O’Neal (15.1 PPG, 7.8 RPG) in their line-up on Thursday but it will probably not be enough to stop the Lakers’ Twin Towers.

Lakers starters Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum are averaging more than 24 points and 19 boards combined. The tandem is also anchoring a Lakers defense that is ranked second in the league. Los Angeles is holding opponents to under 90 points per night on 41 percent field goal shooting.

Let’s not forget about the Lakers' top performer. Kobe Bryant is having another exceptional season, averaging more than 24 points and five rebounds. Last season, Bryant averaged 28.5 points per game and led L.A. to a notable 3-1 SU and ATS record against Phoenix.

The Lakers are 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS outside of the STAPLES Center this year.

              Pick: Lakers -4

                  Thursday, November 20

Not a lot to go on with these early college hoop games, but we'll give out a little information, such as it is- please proceed with caution.

Vanderbilt won its opener 74-48 over Morehead State; they have two of their starters back from LY's 26-8 team- they're picked third in division. Illinois has three starters back from 16-19 team that went 5-13 in Big 11. Illini won first two games, 66-50 vs Eastern Washington, 72-53 against Trxas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Arkansas needed OT to beat SE Louisiana in its opener; they're picked to finish 5th in SEC West, with seven newcomers joining two returning starters from LY's team that lost in first round of NCAA. Cal-Davis is picked 5th in Big West, with four starters back from LY- they started season 1-2, beating LMU, losing to Iowa St (61-58), Milwaukee (81-75).

Oklahoma State has new coach, four starters back from LY, are picked to finish 5th in Big 12-- they won opener by 19, then beat North Texas by 100-88 in second game Monday. Tulsa has three starters back from last year's 25-14 team- they beat crosstown rival Oral Roberts 50-43 Sat.

Washington beat Cleveland State 78-63 Tuesday, after getting upset by Portland in its opener; Huskies have three starters back from LY- Blue Ribbon picks them 25th nationally. Florida International has 4 starters back from LY- they beat Monmouth by 19 Monday, after an opening 57-54 win over Eastern Kentucky in its opener.

Rice lost by four at home to Portland State in its opener for new coach Braun; Owls have seven new players, which is good since they lost 27 of 30 games last year. Cal Poly lost 67-40 to Ark-Little Rock in opener. Mustangs are picked to finish last in the Big West.

Iowa won its first two games against cupcakes, by 20-6 pts; they have six new guys, are picked 9th in Big 11. Citadel lost 82-59 at VCU after beating up a real cupcake (you have to be terrible to be considered bad enough to play Citadel). Bulldogs have all five starters back from LY, but are still very young and are picked 5th in six-team division.

Virginia Tech has four starters back from 21-14 team; they're picked 6th in ACC, won its first two games, 65-62 vs Gardner-Webb, 62-57 against Mt St Mary's. Fairfield lost 90-63 at Memphis in its opener, then beat Sacred Heart 70-54 Tuesday. Stags are picked to finish 2nd in MAAC.

Xavier is picked to win A-14 despite losing three starters from the 30-7 team from LY; Musketeers beat IPFW by 24 in opener (IPFW gave fits to Michigan State Wednesday), then beat Toledo 81-65. Missouri beat UTC 103-75 Monday after beating Prairie View in opener by 21- they have four starters back from LY's 16-16 team.

Chattanooga not only got drilled by Missouri Monday, they lost by 39 to Tennessee in its opener- playing young Memphis team won't be any easier, even on neutral court. Tigers crushed Fairfield, UMass in its first two games, now they hit road for first time. Tough night for the Mocs.

Seton Hall won its first two games, over St Francis (88-61), Columbia (71-50); Pirates have three starters back from LY's 17-15 team- they're picked 14th in tough Big East. USC is picked 23rd nationally; they won first two games, 78-55 over Cal-Irvine, 73-60 over New Mexico State.

                              Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators

Hockey bettors saw something from Montreal Tuesday night they don’t normally see – they quit.

Guy Carbonneau was fuming after his team’s 2-1 loss.

“Every loss is frustrating but, if we lose five games in a row and we work, I won’t say anything. I won’t be happy, but I won’t be as mad as I am now” he told the Montreal Gazette.

After leading 1-0 going into the third period, they were outshot 20-9. Carey Price kept them in the game, but in the end he just couldn’t win this one alone.

Carbonneau’s locker room speech was harsh and intended to get his players fired up. Expect the Habs to bounce back and have a strong game against the Sens, putting an end to this recent string of losses.

                              Pick: Canadiens

                              Pittsburgh Penguins at Atlanta Thrashers

The Pens have been on a hot streak recently winning six straight before losing in a shootout to Minnesota on Tuesday night. After a slow start, their offense is connecting and is reminding us that this team is capable of great things.

Jordan Staal is looking like his old self and his hat trick against the Red Wings was nothing short of unbelievable. Now, if he could only stop making behind the back passes to non-existent players…

Marc-André Fleury may once again have to sit this one out due to an undisclosed injury suffered late in the game against Buffalo on Saturday night, but Dany Sabourin has been playing great so far this season. Against a struggling Thrashers team, the Pens could probably put rookie goaltender John Curry in nets and come out victorious.

                              Pick: Penguins -1.5

                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
