Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Oilers at Detroit Red Wings (-210, 5.5)

The Oilers have yet to clearly identify who they are as a team. Coach Craig MacTavish is carrying three goalies and giving starts to each netminder. There is no real consistent scorer behind Ales Hemsky and the penalty killing unit – usually a team strength – is second to last in the league.

Edmonton surrendered three power-play goals to Toronto on Thursday and then one more to the Avalanche Saturday night.

“Good penalty killing is all about work ethic,” center Shawn Horcoff told the Edmonton Sun after Thursday’s 5-2 loss to the Leafs. “We’ve always had a team that’s prided itself in working hard, blocking shots and giving up their bodies to do that.”

The Oilers better turn around their special teams play quickly if they hope to beat the Wings. Detroit boasts the league’s top power-play unit with a bevy of skilled offensive players.

            Pick: Red Wings

Vancouver Canucks at New York Islanders (+125, 5)

All the pieces are falling into place for the Canucks. Canada’s West Coast team already possessed arguably the best goaltender in the world (Roberto Luongo) and a formidable defense when healthy.

The offense still goes through its dry spells but if Kyle Wellwood continues to improve and Pavol Demitra stays healthy (both big ifs) the Northwest Division should be Vancouver’s to lose.

Meanwhile, the Islanders have to be excited about the way Joey MacDonald has played in place of the injured Rick DiPietro. MacDonald keeps his team in most games despite a pylon-like defense in front of him.

            Pick: Under

Phoenix Suns at Utah Jazz [9 PM ET]

Suns: Phoenix visits Utah following a big 104-86 home win over Detroit on Sunday in which Shaquille O'Neal was ejected before halftime following a flagrant foul on Rodney Stuckey. “I’ve never been the type of player to take anybody out, so I obviously went to the ball,” O’Neal said. “The little guy ran into a brick wall.” Despite the ejection, O'Neal has been a force for the Suns lately, averaging 19.4 points and 8.8 rebounds as they have won four of their last five games. Phoenix will get Matt Barnes back from a two-game suspension tonight.

Suns are 2-7 ATS in the last 9 meetings.

Jazz (-1.5, O/U 197): Utah returns home following a 1-4 road trip that ended with three straight losses. Point guard Deron Williams sat out the last two games of the trip after his ankle injury started bothering him again, resulting in losses at Charlotte and Cleveland. The Jazz hope to have Andrei Kirilenko and Mehmet Okur back and should be rejuvenated at home, where they are 4-0 this season. “We can’t worry about this guy being hurt and that guy being hurt,” Utah head coach Jerry Sloan said. “I feel bad for them, but we still have to compete. You have to learn how to play in those tough games.”

Jazz are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 Monday games.
The OVER is 24-10 in Utah's last 34 games vs. Pacific Division.
