    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, November 17

The Buffalo Bills will be looking to get back into the win column on Monday night when they play host to the Cleveland Browns. Here's a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Bills were looking like serious contenders to win the AFC East early in the season, but a three-game losing streak has knocked them down the standings. Buffalo is coming off consecutive defeats versus division opponents Miami, New York, and New England, falling 20-10 to the Pats last time out. Trent Edwards threw for 120 yards, one TD, and two INTs in that contest, while Marshawn Lynch ran for only 46 yards on his 14 carries.

The Browns haven't been able to get any traction this season, winning consecutive games just once through the first 10 weeks of the season. Cleveland managed to beat Jacksonville on the road three weeks ago, but since then they've fallen to both Baltimore and Denver. Brady Quinn threw for 239 yards and two touchdowns in the Browns' 34-30 home loss to the Broncos last time out, posting a passer rating of 104.3.

Cleveland now sits at 3-6 straight-up on the season, while they're a bit better at 5-4 against-the-spread. Buffalo is 5-4 SU and 4-5 ATS. The oddsmakers have the Bills pegged as 5-point home favorites for Monday night, with the game's total at 42 points; the Browns are 4-5 on the OVER/UNDER so far this season, while the Bills are at 4-4-1.

    Other Notable Events

College basketball begins its Preseason NIT event on Monday, with all eight first-round matchups on tap: Boston College vs. Loyola-Maryland, St. John's vs. Cornell, Purdue vs. Eastern Michigan, Georgia vs. Loyola-Illinois, Oklahoma vs. Mississippi Valley, Davidson vs. James Madison, Arizona vs. Florida Atlantic, and UAB vs. Santa Clara.

Ranked teams in the field include Purdue at No. 11, Oklahoma at No. 12, and Davidson at No. 20. The eight winners of Monday's contests will move on to their respective regional championships on Tuesday, while the eight losers will close out their tournament with consolation contests. The tournament semi-final round will be played on November 26 at Madison Square Garden, with the championship on November 28.

    The Rest of the Schedule

There are three NBA games on the schedule, including Phoenix at Utah. The Jazz will be happy to get back home, as they went 1-4 on last week's road trip through New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Charlotte, and Cleveland; Utah fell 105-93 to the Cavs last time out. As well, Oklahoma City will be looking for their second win of the year when they play host to Houston, and San Antonio will be in L.A. to take on the Clippers.

The NHL has five games on its Monday schedule, including the Oilers at the Red Wings. Detroit won back-to-back games down in Florida last Thursday and Friday, getting past the Lightning 4-3 and the Panthers 3-2. Rounding out the slate: Vancouver at the Islanders, Ottawa at the Rangers, Boston at Toronto, and San Jose at Nashville.

    News from the Wire

RB Lawrence Vickers is listed as DOUBTFUL for the Browns for Monday night, while each of TE Darnell Dinkins, TE Steve Heiden, DT Shaun Rogers, G Eric Steinbach, and DE Corey Williams have been listed as QUESTIONABLE on the injury report . . . Bills DE Aaron Schobel is OUT for Monday night, while WR Josh Reed is DOUBTFUL. WR James Hardy, TE Robert Royal, and S Donte Whitner were all included on the injury report as QUESTIONABLE, while G Brad Butler is PROBABLE to play in the matchup.

    A Peek at the Future

The NBA is busier on Tuesday night, with 10 games on the schedule including New York at Boston, Chicago at the Lakers, and Portland at Golden State . . . Tuesday night's college football matchup sees Northern Illinois playing at Kent, while Ball State will meet Central Michigan on Wednesday . . . the NFL's Thursday night game this week is an AFC North matchup, with the lowly Bengals hitting the road to battle the Steelers.

      Six-pack for Monday

Some college basketball knowledge, with the season upon us.....all of this stuff comes from College Basketball Prospectus, which is available in fine bookstores everywhere........

-- Since 2000, the conference with best home court advantage is the Mountain West, where 67.4% of games have been won by the host.

-- Least home court edge has been the WCC, Gonzaga's league, in which only 55.6% of games since '00 have been won by the host.

-- For you Siena fans, the MAAC ranks 25th (59.1%) on this list; for UAlbany fans, America East 26th (58.9%).

-- If you like fast paced basketball, turn the Big 11 Network off; from 2004-08, the Big 11 had slowest paced games in America.

-- From 2004-08, Southern Conference teams had made 36.2% of its 3's, the best in the country; will be interesting to see how they do this year, with the arc moved back a foot.

-- 35 of 96 ACC games last season were decided by three or less points or in OT, the highest %age of games in a league this decade.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

        13) Ravens hadn't allowed more than 76 rushing yards in a game this season-- the Giants reamed them for 207 yards on the ground, in a really easy 30-10 win. Next up for the Giants are the Cardinals and two-time MVP Kurt Warner-- should be a good game.

        12) Colts had three TDs, four FGs on their nine drives vs Houston., converting 10-15 third down plays. Houston averaged 9.0 yards per pass attempt with Bob Sanders out hurt, but it wasn't enough.

        11) Eagle-Bengal tie was NFL's first since a Falcon-Steeler deadlock six years ago. Philly was -3 in turnovers as Bengals had 10-yd edge in average starting field position. Eagles punted with 1:07 left, so a tie couldn't have bad that bad an option for them. Donovan McNabb did not know the NFL had tie games-- where has he been?

        10) Green Bay just riddled the Chicago defense in an easy 37-3 win that was only their second win in last seven series games. Standings in the NFC North show Packers, Vikings and Bears now all 5-5.

        9) Detroit led 10-0 early, as they tried for their first win, but it was not to be, as Carolina ran ball for 264 yards, won going away, 31-22. Still concerned about Delhomme, who was 10-19 passing after awful 7-27 day at Oakland last week.

        8) Steelers had 13 penalties for 115 yards; Chargers had two for five in the first 11-10 game in NFL history (over 12,000 games).

        7) When we saw that Vanderbilt won at Kentucky Saturday, and are now bowl eligible, it figured that Jay Cutler would be having a good day on Sunday, and the Vandy alum did just that.....

        6) Oddest stat ever: Redskins are now 0-10 in franchise history when they play on November the 16th.

        5) Two-time MVP Kurt Warner was 32-44/382 passing, as Cardinals made Seattle's defense look like a Pop Warner outfit in a 26-20 win. Turnovers kept Seahawks in the game; all three of their TD drives came on marches of less than 20 yards.

        4) Tampa Bay trailed 13-6 at half, but shut Minnesota out in second half of 19-13 win; Garcia was 23-30/255 passing (8.2 yds/attempt). Bucs won despite just one TD (four FGs) in five red zone trips.

        3) Johnnie Lee Higgins had a 93-yard punt return with less than 5:00 to play, giving Oakland a 15-14 lead, but Miami drove field and got a winning FG to move to 6-4 after its 17-15 win. 1-15 last season, the Fish are now a playoff contender, which is why we like the NFL.

        2) OK, I've sat thru the last two Ram games, when they trailed at the half by 40-0/35-3 scores, and I've come to this conclusion; they need to take the American flags off the back of their helmets and replace them with white flags, since they've clearly quit on this season.

        1) All the Tennessee Titans do is win games; wonder if there are few former Miami Dolphins getting nervous down in south Florida?

Houston Rockets at Oklahoma City Thunder (+8.5, 183.5)

Considered one of the top contenders in the Western Conference following the offseason acquisition of Ron Artest, Houston (6-4) appears to be still adjusting to its new look. Though the Rockets opened with three straight wins, they've since dropped four of seven.

They were particularly disappointed with their performance Friday night in a 77-75 loss to San Antonio in which they gave up the game's final 12 points, but they bounced back with a 91-82 victory over New Orleans on Saturday.

"I felt that in the first couple minutes, the guys had a bad taste in their mouths and we needed to come out and get this one," said Tracy McGrady, who had 18 points, nine rebounds and four assists. "This was a great win for us collectively."

McGrady is scoring 16.7 points per game - his lowest average since 1999-2000 - and shooting a career-low 38.7 percent from the field. After a 2-for-12 performance against the Spurs, he was 5-for-12 against the Hornets.

Lately, everyone has been dominating the Thunder, who have dropped seven in a row overall. Oklahoma City, which is giving up 104.4 points per game during the skid, suffered its largest margin of defeat of the season in a 110-85 loss to Philadelphia on Saturday night.

"There's been too many of those nights this year, about nine of them," said Thunder forward Nick Collison, who was held to two points and missed all seven of his field-goal attempts.

                              Pick: Houston

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers (-1.5, 177)

Going into the weekend, it looked like the short-handed San Antonio Spurs were going to have trouble staying afloat as their two star guards recover from ankle injuries.

Instead, they've won back-to-back games for the first time this season, and they'll have a good chance to make it three straight on Monday when they visit the lowly Los Angeles Clippers.

With their offense ailing along with banged-up veterans Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker, the Spurs were scuffling at 2-5 - despite a relatively soft schedule - entering Friday night's game against Houston.

But San Antonio turned in a strong defensive effort in a 77-75 win over the Rockets, then followed that up with a 90-88 road victory over Sacramento on Sunday, when they allowed just 16 points in the final period.

"We did a real good defensive job in the fourth quarter, and for us that's necessary," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We're not exactly a juggernaut on offense. We gave up 88 points, that's about as much as we can allow and still win."

Ginobili and Parker combined to average 38.3 points last season, but Ginobili hasn't played this season and Parker hasn't played since Nov. 7. Without either in the last four games, the Spurs have scored only 84.3 points per game, but have still won three of four, allowing an average of 81.3 points over that span.

The Spurs (4-5) should have an ideal opportunity to reach .500 for the first time this season with the Clippers next on their schedule. They've won eight straight and 16 of 17 against Los Angeles, holding the Clippers to an average of 83.0 points in seven meetings the last two seasons.

The Clippers (1-8) aren't looking any better this fall, having dropped eight of nine to start the season despite playing eight of those nine games at Staples Center. After earning their lone victory last Sunday against Dallas, they've lost back-to-back home games to Sacramento and Golden State.

"We have a good team. We're just not as good as we need to be right now," center Chris Kaman said. "You want to start pointing fingers, but there is no one to point fingers at but yourself. Everybody needs to dig down and work harder. With this team, it's far from over."
