    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, November 16

There is a full slate of National Football League games on Sunday plus the Sprint Cup Series' season-ending race at Homestead-Miami. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

Tony Romo is slated to return to action on Sunday night as the Dallas Cowboys play on the road against the division-rival Washington Redskins. The 'Boys haven't exactly fared well since Romo went on the shelf, but they're still at 5-4 on the season. Of course, they haven't been a lucrative betting option at just 3-6 ATS through nine games. The 'Skins are just one game up on Dallas at 6-3 on the season, with a 5-4 ATS record.

Dallas is pegged as a 1.5-point road favorite for Sunday, thanks mostly to Clinton Portis' injured knee. The other two NFC East contenders are also in action on Sunday, with Philadelphia at Cincinnati, and the first-place Giants hosting Baltimore. The Eagles are big 9-point favorites versus the lowly Bengals, and New York is a 7-point home favorite.

Also on tap around the NFL on Sunday: Denver at Atlanta (-6.5), Chicago at Green Bay (-3.5), Houston at Indianapolis (-8), New Orleans (-5.5) at Kansas City, Oakland at Miami (-10), Minnesota at Tampa Bay (-4), Detroit at Carolina (-14), St. Louis at San Francisco (-6.5), San Diego at Pittsburgh (-5.5), and Arizona (-3) at Seattle. As well, the 9-0 Titans (-3) will be looking for their 10th win when they play down in Jacksonville.

    Other Notable Events

The NASCAR season comes to a close on Sunday, as the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series hit Homestead-Miami Speedway for the Ford 400. Standings leader Jimmie Johnson only needs to avoid a disaster on Sunday to claim his third straight Cup championship; he enters this race with a 141-point lead on Carl Edwards for first place.

Edwards, though, is the 7/2 Vegas favorite to win the Ford 400, with Johnson, Kyle Busch, and Greg Biffle all at 7/1 odds. Matt Kenseth sits just behind that top group at 8/1 odds, with Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin both at 12/1 odds to pick up the victory.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The struggling Dallas Mavericks return to the court Sunday, as they'll play in New York against the Knicks in a 6:00pm ET contest. There are two other matinees on the NBA's Sunday slate, with Miami at Toronto at 1:00pm, and Orlando at Chicago at 5:30pm. As well, it's Minnesota at Denver, Detroit at Phoenix, and then San Antonio at Sacramento.

There are just five games on the NHL's schedule for Sunday, including Los Angeles at Anaheim in the battle of Southern California. The other four contests: Tampa Bay at Carolina, Montreal at St. Louis, San Jose at Chicago, and also Atlanta at Philadelphia.

As well, there are a few ranked college hoops teams in action on Sunday, with No. 19 Florida taking on Bradley, No. 25 Wisconsin going up against Long Beach State, No. 8 Duke playing Rhode Island, No. 6 Michigan State meeting Idaho, No. 9 Notre Dame tipping off against South Carolina Upstate, and No. 24 Kansas playing Mo. Kansas City.

    A Peek at the Future

Monday Night Football is a matchup between the Browns and Bills in Buffalo this week, with the home team pegged as 5-point favorites (and the total at 42 points) . . . a light Monday night around the NBA sees only three contests on the hardwood - Houston at Oklahoma City, Phoenix at Utah, and San Antonio at the Clippers . . . undefeated (10-0) Ball State will be gunning for another win Wednesday when they play Central Michigan.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

        13) With 2:00 left in third quarter, LSU trailed Troy State 31-3 on a night where they wore their purple jerseys at home (to the best of my knowledge, they almost never do that). Tigers outscored Trojans 37-0 over the last 17:00 to improve their record to 7-3 and save the message boards from a lot of Les Miles-bashing.

        12) Before Saturday, had a team ever scored 70 in a game and allowed 70 in a game in same season? Tulsa's done it this year, losing 70-30 at Houston, a few weeks after they pounded UTEP 77-28.

        11) Kentucky QB Cobb has to be the only starting QB in country who is also his team's punt returner; he is also the team's #1 receiver statwise still, since he was only moved to QB a few games ago. Not bad for a true freshman, a kid who was in high school last year.

        10) I'm 48 years old and I've never seen a 3-8 Michigan team, at least not in football. After next week, they'll be 3-9.

        9) South Carolina-Florida game was 0-0, then this happened-- Florida picked off a pass for a TD (7-0), then picked off another pass at the Carolina 20 or 25, scored on the first play (14-0), then recovered a botched Gamecock lateral on the kickoff at the Carolina 1-yard line, so they were up 21-0 when three TDs netted roughly 25-28 yards of total offense. Gators are real good, they don't need a lot of help. The whole nightmare took 2:15 of elapsed gametime.

        8) Nebraska gave up a punt return TD and a defensive TD, and still pounded Kansas State 56-28. Wildcats are back down at the bottom of the Big 12 standings, where they were for decades before Snyder came to Manhattan and performed a magical transformation. Facing the K-State AD is finding another Snyder- it won't be easy.

        7) My unofficial count was 33 TDs by defense/special teams in 50 lined games this week- thats an awful lot for one weekend.

        6) Biggest upset winners this week were Rutgers, Central Florida, as both sides won as 7.5-point underdogs. November is usually quiet in terms of big upsets, since attrition has taken care of the lesser teams.

        5) Ten teams had 4+ turnovers this week; Notre Dame (5) was the only one of the ten that either won or covered its game.

        4) With 1:45 left, Notre Dame led Navy 27-7; with 0:34 left, Navy had ball on Notre Dame's 34-yard line, down 27-21, as Irish almost had one of the biggest collapses in college football history. Irish will beat Syracuse, lose to USC, then NBC will jump for joy because the Notre Dame will go to a bowl at 7-5. Big deal.

        3) Wonder if NBC knows that 89 of the other 119 D-I football teams have won a bowl since the last time Notre Dame did. That goes up to 90 if Vanderbilt wins their bowl game this year.

        2) Kudos to Vanderbilt for getting bowl eligible for first time since the 1982 season; they had lost 19 consecutive games when they had shot at becoming bowl eligible. That kid #17 caught two TD passes, had two INTs and even found time to fumble a punt. Quite a player, that DJ Moore is. Played both ways, and didn't even seem egotistical.

        1) With Vandy going bowling, looks as if Baylor (last bowl in 1994) will inherit the longest bowl drought. Check out the state of Baylor's drubbing of Texas A&M, and maybe Bears will go bowling in '09.

            Weekend NBA
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About 2-1/2 weeks into the 2008-09 NBA season, things aren’t looking a whole lot different from where we left off in June. Once again it is the Celtics and Lakers stealing all the headlines, heading into this weekend’s action atop their respective conferences. That’s not to say there hasn’t been any other noteworthy stories to break thus far, but, at this point it seems we could be spending the next seven months simply preparing for a finals’ series rematch. As part of the action over the next three days, Boston will play twice and Los Angeles once. Here’s a closer look at those games as well as the rest of the key weekend action, plus the Top Power Trends for you to consider in your wagering.

On Sunday, six games grace the betting board, starting in conjunction with the early kickoffs in the NFL. At 1:05 PM ET, the Raptors tip-off the NBA festivities against Miami. A bit later on in the day, the Knicks will host Dallas and Detroit continues its west coast trip at Phoenix. Finally, the Spurs and Kings wrap up the day with a 9:05 PM ET start.

It should be another great weekend of NBA action, with plenty of money-making opportunities to choose from. Speaking of money making, take a look at some of these top profitable trends that are in play for the weekend games:

Pick 'n' Roll: Sunday's best NBA bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Toronto Raptors (-5, 187.5)

Winners of four of their last six, the Heat return to the scene of their worst performance of a terrible 2007-08 when they visit the Raptors on Sunday afternoon.

During an injury-riddled 15-win 2007-2008 season, Miami lost all four of its meetings with the Raptors, scoring 83 points or fewer in each of those games. The lowlight was a horrific 96-54 loss at Toronto on March 19, when the Heat shot a franchise-worst 25.6 percent (20-for-78) from the field while producing the third-lowest scoring output in the NBA since the advent of the shot clock in 1954.

The Miami team that took the floor in that game was a shell of its optimal self, as starters Dwyane Wade, Shawn Marion and Udonis Haslem were all sidelined with injuries. All three are now healthy.

Marion had missed two games due to a strained groin, but returned Friday night and had 12 points and 12 rebounds as the Heat (5-4) cruised to a 97-77 home victory over Washington. Haslem also had a double-double with 13 points and 13 boards for Miami, which outrebounded the Wizards 52-33 and held them scoreless for a 9-minute stretch during the second half.

Defensively, the century mark has been key for the Heat. Miami is 5-0 when holding opponents below 100 points and has lost all four of its games when allowing 100 or more.

That could be a good sign against a Toronto club which has failed to reach 100 points in regulation this season. The Raptors (4-4) beat Golden State 112-108 on Oct. 31, but scored their final 16 points of that game in overtime.

Toronto has dropped two straight and four of five since opening the season 3-0. Chris Bosh had 30 points and 12 rebounds Wednesday night as the Raptors lost 106-96 at home to Philadelphia.

Toronto's task could be made tougher if point guard Jose Calderon can't play Sunday. Calderon is questionable for this contest after he strained his right hamstring in Wednesday's loss.

                    Pick: Miami

Detroit Pistons at Phoenix Suns (2.5, 199)

Allen Iverson and the Pistons, coming off a win over what had been the league's last unbeaten team, can complete a perfect four-game road trip Sunday if they knock off a Phoenix Suns squad getting Steve Nash back in its lineup.

Iverson's season-high 30 points lifted the Pistons to a win at Sacramento on Tuesday in the opener of this road trip, and they followed with victories on back-to-back nights. After beating Golden State, Detroit handed the Los Angeles Lakers their first loss of the season on Friday, 106-95.

This game could see Iverson guarded by former Philadelphia 76ers backcourt mate Raja Bell, part of the NBA's All-Defensive second team last season, but there may be times he could take advantage of the defensively limited Nash.

The two-time MVP had to serve a one-game suspension Friday for his role in an altercation two nights earlier against Houston, but Phoenix (7-3) overcame his absence and that of two other key players to beat Sacramento 97-95 in overtime.

Amare Stoudemire hit the game-winning basket with 4.5 seconds left, and Shaquille O'Neal had one of his best games in a Suns uniform with 29 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.

Phoenix also was missing two other double-figure scorers, Matt Barnes and Leandro Barbosa. Barnes will sit out again Sunday to complete his two-game suspension for inciting the fracas with Houston's Rafer Alston, and Barbosa remains in his native Brazil following the death of his mother.

The Suns have lost three straight and eight of 10 versus the Pistons. Detroit has won three in a row in Phoenix - by an average of 19.7 points - and is 7-1 there this decade.

                    Pick: Pistons

Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets
                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Hurricanes (-145, 5.5)

Five months ago, the Tampa Bay Lightning believed Barry Melrose would be the coach to help them rejoin the NHL's elite.

For now, it will be up to Rick Tocchet to return them to respectability.

After Melrose's stunning dismissal, Tocchet will make his debut as the Lightning's interim coach on Sunday against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Melrose was fired on Friday by Tampa Bay (5-7-4) following an unimpressive 16-game stint that came after he left the television booth to coach the team that finished with the league's worst record in 2007-08.

Tocchet has been in the NHL for 25 years as a player and coach. He played 18 seasons, most notably with Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, and was an assistant with three clubs.

However, Tocchet has some baggage. He was sentenced to two years' probation in August 2007 after pleading guilty in an investigation into a sports betting ring. Tocchet said he never bet on NHL games, and rejoined Phoenix's staff in February after a two-year absence that included a league suspension.

Tocchet inherits a team that's last in the league with 33 goals scored, and has been shut out three times this season despite having high-scoring All-Stars Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis, and top overall draft pick Steven Stamkos.

Lecavalier - the franchise's all-time leading scorer - has just six goals and five assists in 2008-09. St. Louis, meanwhile, has 12 points after averaging 92.5 over the last two seasons.

Stamkos could be overmatched as a rookie. The 18-year-old center had one assist in his first eight games before scoring his first two NHL goals as part of a three-point night on Oct. 30. He's since failed to get a point in seven games.

After conducting his first practice on Saturday, Tocchet said Lightning players will be driven harder.

"We have to increase the energy level in some players," he said. "We've got to start getting these guys cranking on the ice, playing a high-tempo game."

Carolina (8-7-2) also has had trouble finding the back of the net recently. Including a 3-2 loss to Atlanta on Friday, the Hurricanes have tallied five goals during a three-game losing streak.

                      Pick: Lightning

San Jose Sharks at Chicago Blackhawks (+105, 5.5)

Few teams have gotten past the San Jose Sharks this season. It's been more than three years since the Chicago Blackhawks have done it.

The league-leading Sharks look to continue their impressive start Sunday night and beat the Blackhawks for the 12th consecutive time.

San Jose (14-3-1) bounced back from its first consecutive losses of the season and improved its NHL-best record Thursday with a 6-1 home rout of Calgary. Joe Pavelski and Milan Michalek each scored twice for the Sharks, who held a 46-24 advantage in shots on goal.

San Jose scored a season-high four power-play goals in nine opportunities versus the Flames, improving to 7-for-21 with the man advantage in its last three games.

Wins have been virtually automatic for the Sharks against Chicago (7-3-5) in recent years. Since losing 6-3 at the United Center on Oct. 7, 2005, San Jose has won 11 straight in the series - outscoring the Blackhawks 38-19 in that span - with five of those victories coming on the road.

Center Patrick Marleau has five goals and six assists in those 11 victories. He has 13 goals and 16 assists in 40 career games versus the Blackhawks.

Chicago has yet to lose in regulation at home this season, but fell to 2-0-2 on its five-game homestand after a 4-3 overtime loss to St. Louis on Friday night. Dave Bolland scored two goals and assisted on another for the Blackhawks, but his hooking penalty in overtime allowed the Blues' Andy McDonald to score the game-winner on the power play.

"We've got to let this one really sink in and get ticked off about it," captain Jonathan Toews told the Blackhawks' official Web site. "We have to come back and do better on Sunday."

The Sharks will likely start Brian Boucher, who played 15 games for Chicago in 2006-07, in net for the injured Evgeni Nabokov (leg). Boucher is 4-2-0 with two ties and a 1.84 goals-against average in eight career games against the Blackhawks.

                      Pick: Blawkhawks
