Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Flyers at Montreal Canadiens (-165, 5.5)

Saturday’s matchup of two Eastern Conference contenders has added pressure for both sides. Philadelphia appeared to be righting its ship after a disastrous start to the season but four losses in the last five games dispelled the positive feelings in the City of Brotherly Love.

There are rumours suggesting the Flyers may sign winger Brendan Shanahan over the weekend. Philly waived defenseman Lass Kukkonen Thursday to apparently clear cap room for the 39-year-old winger with 650 career goals.

The Habs, meanwhile, have dropped three of their last four after jumping out to an 8-1-1 start to the campaign. Thursday’s loss to the Boston Bruins was particularly concerning. Montreal was thoroughly beaten physically and on the scoreboard.

“We had turnovers on the first two goals and the third one was a power play,” Habs coach Guy Carbonneau told the Montreal Gazette after losing 6-1 to the Bruins. “I don’t have any answers right now, but we’ll address it (Friday).”

    Don’t count on it.

    Pick: Flyers +155

Boston Bruins at New York Rangers (-125, 5.5)

The Baby Bears play their third game in four nights Saturday against the East-leading Rangers. Thursday’s win over Montreal was Boston’s fifth consecutive and eighth in nine contests.

“Probably one of the better games I’ve seen since I’ve been with this organization,” forward Marco Sturm told reporters after Thursday’s win over Montreal. “It’s great to see we are heading in the right direction, but there is still a long way to go.”

New York’s solid start has been credited to the play of former Blue Jacket Nikolai Zherdev. The sniper leads the team with 16 points in 19 games. The Blue Shirts boast a balanced attack with scoring coming from their top three lines.

Look for the Rangers to stop the Bruins hot streak with a win in front of the MSG fans.

    Pick: Rangers

Utah Jazz at Cleveland Cavaliers [8:30 PM ET]

Jazz: Utah is 0-4 in Cleveland since Carlos Boozer left the Cavs to sign with the Jazz, and he won't have too much help as he continues to look for his first victory there. Boozer's 26 points and 15 rebounds weren't enough in a 104-96 loss at Charlotte on Friday night, and the team has now failed to score 100 points in four straight games. Most of the problem can be attributed to point guard Deron Williams, center Mehmet Okur and forward Andrei Kirilenko missing action. “For some reason we just can’t beat the teams we’re supposed to beat,” Boozer said. “Even if we’re short-handed, I feel like the guys in the locker room can play with anybody.”

Jazz are 1-10 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
The UNDER is 6-3 in Utah's last 9 games overall.

Key injuries - PG Deron Williams (ankle) is doubtful.
F Andrei Kirilenko (finger) is doubtful.
C Mehmet Okur (personal) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 91

Cavs (-9, O/U 191): Cleveland is riding a six-game winning streak with star LeBron James averaging 33.5 points during that stretch. The Cavs got their best game from point guard Mo Williams in a 110-99 win over Denver on Thursday night, as he totaled a team-high 24 points and dished out six assists. “We still have a long way to go, but I like the progress of our guys at this point,” Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. “I think, offensively, we’re further along now than we have been in the last three years.”

Cavs are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Cleveland's last 9 games vs. Northwest Division.

Key Injuries - C/F Ben Wallace (knee) is questionable

                PROJECTED SCORE: 100

                        Saturday's College Basketball

Not a lot to go on with these early college hoop games, but we'll give out a little information, such as it is- please proceed with caution.

Denver runs Princeton offense; they have two starters back from 11-19 team that went 7-11 in Sun Belt; they're picked last in their half of the league. Northern Iowa lost three starters from an 18-14 team; they are picked to finish second in Missouri Valley.
