Pick 'n' Roll: Friday's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at Charlotte Bobcats (+6.5, 180)

The Utah Jazz have struggled on their season high-tying five-game road trip. Visiting the Charlotte Bobcats may help them break out of their slump.

The Jazz began the season with five consecutive victories before opening this trip with a 107-99 loss to the New York Knicks on Sunday. They rebounded to beat the Philadelphia 76ers 93-80 Tuesday, but played poorly Wednesday against Washington in a 95-87 defeat to the previously winless Wizards.

Utah was already playing without starting center Mehmet Okur, who has missed the last two games after returning home to Turkey because of a family illness, and became further short-handed when reserve Andrei Kirilenko sprained his right index finger.

Kirilenko - tops on the Jazz with 1.4 blocks per game, second with 6.8 rebounds and third in scoring with 14.0 points - is listed as day to day.

The Bobcats are last in the NBA with 87.3 points and 31.1 field goals made per game, are shooting 42.7 percent from the field and grabbing 37.0 rebounds a contest - second-fewest in the league.

To make matters worse for Charlotte, leading scorer Jason Richardson is out for about a week after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on Wednesday.

"I have never been with a team where you're trying to figure out whether we drive the ball, whether we post the ball, whether we run pick and roll," first-year Charlotte coach Larry Brown said. "It's a real puzzle right now."

            Pick: Jazz

Phoenix Suns at Sacramento Kings (+7, 211)

Under former coach Mike D'Antoni, the Suns were third in the NBA in scoring with 110.1 points per game last season after leading the league in each of the previous three. They also topped the NBA in field-goal shooting each of the last three seasons.

The offense was expected to slow down under the more defensive-minded Porter, not to mention Phoenix (6-3) has one of the NBA's oldest rosters with Steve Nash and Shaquille O'Neal leading the way. However, the Suns are back among the league leaders in scoring (100.9 ppg), thanks mainly to their 55.4 percent shooting during a 4-1 start.

Their shots haven't been falling as much recently, hitting 42.6 percent while averaging 94.0 points to go 2-2.

Since a 49-point outing Nov. 5, Amare Stoudemire has seen his point total decrease in four consecutive games while shooting 43.2 percent, compared to 69.6 during his first five contests.

The Suns are 0-3 when failing to score 100 points, compared to 6-0 when they do.

Visiting the Kings could help. The Suns averaged 117.8 points in sweeping last season's four-game series and they've won nine of the last 10 meetings.

Sacramento is giving up 105.2 points per game this season to rank near the bottom of the league and allowing opponents to shoot 41.4 percent from 3-point range.

They've split two games since losing leading scorer Kevin Martin, who won't return until next week due to a sprained ankle. The Kings also have been missing Francisco Garcia, sidelined all season by a strained calf after averaging 12.3 points in 2007-08.

            Pick: Suns

Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Devils at Washington Capitals (-190, 5.5)

The Devils never had this problem when Martin Brodeur was healthy. The all-world goalie is out indefinitely and his replacement is struggling. Kevin Weekes was pulled in the second period of Wednesday’s loss after the Rangers lit the lamp four times.

Coach Ron Sutter is holding his cards close to his chest after Thursday’s practice but Weeks informed press members Scott Clemmensen would be playing Saturday against the Caps.

“Clemmer is playing tomorrow as far as I know,” Weekes told the Bergen Record.

Putting the puck in the net has been the Devils main problem. The club has just four goals in its last three games. Goals won’t come easy as long as left winger Zach Parise is bothered by a sore left heel.

The Devils’ leading scorer (11 goals and six assists) didn’t practice on Thursday after he was hit in the foot by a puck during Wednesday’s game. He’s still expected to suit up on Saturday.

The Caps have yet to lose on home ice in regulation this season. Expect the trend to continue tonight.

              Pick: Capitals

Columbus Blue Jackets at Buffalo Sabres (-170, 5.5)

Ken Hitchcock’s club is getting a couple key contributors back in the lineup this weekend. Defenseman Rostislav Klesla missed four games (wrist) before returning Wednesday night against the Coyotes.

No. 1 netminder Pascal Leclaire was also activated from the injured reserve and is expected to start in one of the Jackets next two games.

The Sabres have hit a rut since their impressive 6-0-1 start to the campaign. Buffalo has lost five of their last eight.

              Pick: Blue Jackets

                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                            Second Round Previews and Picks
                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Eskimos (10-8) at Montreal Alouettes (11-7) (Montreal -6)

The Montreal Alouettes enter this game knowing they have a unique opportunity to host the Grey Cup next week if they can win against the Eskimos.

These two teams met twice this season. The Als won convincingly 40-4 in September before falling apart and later lost to Edmonton 37-14 without many of their usual starters in the final game of the season.

These two games are meaningless now. Tomorrow's game will oppose two of the best QBs in the league, Ricky Ray, for the Eskimos and Anthony Calvillo for the Alouettes. Both of them can tear apart any secondary and most likely one or both of them will.

The key to this game will be clock control and both teams knows it. Expect the ball carriers - A.J. Harris for Edmonton and Avon Cobourne for Montreal - to be busy. Since both Ray and Calvillo are such threats, you can also expect that the opposing defenses will try to apply lots of pressure on them.

Keep in mind Montreal's offensive line has allowed the fewest sacks (22) in the league this year CFL. The Alouettes also set club records for yardage and points scored.

There’s a lot of playoff history between these two rivals and many dramatic games including a double overtime 38-35 Grey Cup win by the Eskimos against the Als in 2005. This game has all the ingredients to be another piece of anthology and the team that will control the ball for more than 35 minutes should prevail. Expect it to be Montreal.

                            Pick: Montreal (-6)

                            B.C. Lions (11-7) vs Calgary Stampeders (13-5) (Calgary -6)

Henry Burris finished second behind Montreal's Anthony Calvillo on the 2008 CFL All-Star team which many in Alberta believe was grand theft. And they have a point.

Burris had a fabulous season with 5000-plus yards and 39 touchdowns. He also led the Stampeders to the best record in Canadian football this season.

Can he bring this team to the next level? The question deserves to be asked seriously since Burris hasn't won a playoff game in three years with the Stamps.

The Calgary fans still remember the two interceptions he threw against the Eskimos in 2005, the four picks and the fumble he gave at home against Saskatchewan the year after and last November, this time in Regina, his two fumbles and an interception that cost the Stampeders a third playoff loss in a row.

But Burris, now 33 years old, has been a more mature quarterback this season, better at reading defenses and selecting the right target. He has the second best QB rating in the CFL, after Calvillo, and threw 39 touchdown passes with just 14 picks. But he will be pressured Saturday by the most terrifying defensive end in this league, Cameron Wake, who dominated this season with 23 sacks.

Burris and his OL must also keep in mind that Wake's teammates, Aaron Hunt (11) and Brent Johnson (10), finished second and third for sacks in the CFL. The Stampeders will also need to control the clock and running back Joffrey Reynolds should be in for a busy afternoon.

If Burris manages to escape the Lions’ blitzes and avoid mistakes, the Stampeders should win their ticket to the Grey Cup.

                            Pick: Calgary (-6)

                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
